It seems Jake Gyllenhaal went straight back to NYC after Friday's baseball game, and the riches continue, which I appreciate as I work through the 'coming back down to earth after TIFF' thing. Jake was seen walking in Soho beside Noah Baumbach, a director and writer, who was Oscar nominated for his screenplay of The Squid and the Whale. Noah's most recent film is Margot at the Wedding, which stars, amongst others, Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Jason Leigh, Noah's wife.
I know we've seen pictures of Jake before with directors, writers and actors, and speculated over whether it's a manuscript or screenplay that we can spy rolled into Jake's back pocket. So yet again, let us hope that this is a sign that Jake's putting his working hat back on, especially as one would think Noah is the type of director who may be on Jake's list. It doesn't hurt to keep your fingers crossed. But, whatever, the reason, it's always good to see Jake - and is that the Favourite White T-shirt I can glimpse there? I think it is.
Update
Since, I originally posted this, it is now confirmed that this was no accidental encounter. Jake dined with Noah at the Italian restaurant Bar Pitti on Sixth Avenue in the Village. Just gets better! Thanks Pia for the update.
More pictures at IHJ.

Wooo! Am I glad I responded to the impulse to drop in,while the lunch cooks,to see who's here, the answer being you,WDW,and Jake with Noah Baumbach!
I haven't seen any of his films, as a writer or a director, but know about his Oscar nom for "Squid",and the fact that he's well regarded in the business. A glimpse at the precis of his latest venture suggests it's just the sort of thoughtful,complex,relationship-driven story that Jake would love to get his teeth into, should Mr. Baumbach have another one on the back burner, waiting to be cast with the right male lead!
I know we've been disappointed before when sightings of Jake with scripts, writers, directors etc have come to nothing, but maybe this time it will lead to a great new project sooner rather than later! (Nadine crosses everything!).
Whatever,it's just great to see Jake striding through New York again, looking purposeful, fit and fabulous.
The white T-shirt? Every man should have at least one - but how could it look better than on the Gyllen-pecs?! Thanks so much for the heads up,WDW, and the lovely photos!
Hi Nadine! Keep everything crossed ;) And Jake does look so good.
I apologise for not making much sense today, I'm sick and my brain is not computing (not even a hangover, sigh) :( I need someone to make me soup.... So thanks Jake for turning up again when I need you!
I did see The Squid and the Whale and, yes, it is right up Jake's alley. Excellent film. I do have everything crossed.
With Jake's Jewish roots I'm sure he'll whip you up a fantastic, therapeutic chicken soup in no time! Delicious already! The soup would taste great too ;-)
Sorry that you're not feeling so well,chucky-egg ;-( I hope you'll soon be feeling better.
Big hugs and lots of Jake love,
Nadine xxx
Thanks Nadine - please don't talk about Jake and whips in the same sentence :P I imagine, he'd be great looking after a sickie. Just send him over.
Hi Beckela - I definitely agree about the Squid. I always like to see directors such as Noah talking to Jake - I doubt they nomally just bump into each other in the street.
^^^I agree, it seems a bit unlikely this was a coincidental meeting. Oh, Jake, why can't you commit to a new project? Hurry up, already. Rendition is almost here, and it will take at least a year for a new movie to go from start to finish. We can't wait that long in between!
'Twas a pleasure to see you and Ruby yesterday, WDW - glad you got home safe!
I tend to think Jake will hold off announcing a new project until after the premiere of Rendition.
More superficially, he's wearing the jeans and looking fine :)
Just taking a break from doing the ironing and what do I find? Jake wearing a shirt that hasn't been near an iron in its life!!How, erm, ironic ;)
He's looking good though, even without any visible chest hair;D
Fingers crossed we'll hear about a new project soon. At this point I really don't care what it is as long as he's got SOMETHING for us to look forward to!
WDW, sorry to hear you're not well:( Thanks for bringing us these pics, and hope you're feeling better soon:)
O WDW, sorry you are a sickie, I wish you chickensoup a la Jake - remmember when he found just the right food for his pregnant sister Maggie? as we all know he is a care-taker personality.
(you sure it isnt from the booze?)
anyway glad to know there is indeed a tracking device implanted in our guy's sneakers. I always love seeing him in the West Village where I lived for many years. And Im not as eager as some of you to see him working again - Jake at play is fine by me. I need recovery time from all of the excitement.
(thought George Clooney in TFF interview looked jumpy and haggard. Please Jake take care a your gorgeous self. . . )
you, too, WDW. . .
Thanks everyone *) I'm having to work too, which isn't helping... I'll try not to breathe on anyone.
Hi Cherita - I know this is a taste in patience and I'm not known for it!
Hey Anouska - thanks for yesterday - and the red drinks *) I think you might be right that Jake wouldn't announce anything til after Rendition. I love the jeans and the shoes - loving the Nike.
Hi Twisted Logic - I'm glad Jake's brightening your ironing - he needs you! That shirt looks more crumpled than the dark blue one - but I just wish I could see more of that white shirt underneath :)
Hi Positively Pia - no, it's not the booze on this occasion - I'd be feeling much worse if I'd NOT had any cosmos yesterday ;) Good for the immune system...
I'm greedy - I want to see Jake in a play and in a film and then in another film :D
I think George was definitely burning the candle at both ends at TIFF, maybe that explains some of the haggardness. Mind you - we didn't see Jake the morning after either!
I'm watching Zodiac as I work for its therapeutic powers.
Oh, and . ahem. . . not to be a fussbudget, but Bar Pitti, where Jake and Noah dined, is north of Houston Street, on Sixth Ave., Soho being South of Houston, and Noho, another made-up name, an area north of Houston, does not extend to Sixth Avenue, so correct designation would be "the Village"
Just sayin' - - -
Noho is even more of a made-up place than Soho. North of Houston on 6th Ave. is "the Village" -
forgive repeat after "just sayin'. . . "
Thanks Pia - when I did the post, this information wasn't available. I'll update it but possibly can't amend the title :) I love all the details - so this shows they definitely didn't bump into each other - hmmm, an actor has dinner with a director... Like it!
ummmm. . . lunch, I think, not dinner. "to dine" can mean lunch, in the colonies haha!
sorry to be such a pest, love!
Hi Pesty pia - to dine can also means to have lunch in the old country - I wasn't inferring a time of day ;)
oh, okay.
I think Jake really likes Italian cuisine.
Hey pia liks pasta - it's my favourite too, although I imagine Jake eats his pasta with more decorum than I do - nothing like trying to impress a director when the spagghetti flies up to hit you in the eye :)
'How, erm, ironic ;)'
groan! :D
I don't know much about Noah Baumbach, but I like JJL, she was great as Dorothy Parker. I expect actors and Directors often have lunch and it comes to nothing in the end, but it does seem intriguing! I'm staying hopeful. :)
WDW and Anouska - thanks for a fun evening. *) I remember being doubled-up with laughter outside Waterloo station last night, but I can't remember what I found so funny! :/
Hey Ruby - I just approve totally of the whole concept of doing lunch. I'm sure they were mulling over something though... I wonder who sets up these luncheons - I'm intrigued by how the whole thing works - possibly because it involves Jake AND food.
I seem to recall that we actually managed to lose Waterloo Station...
You can tell I'm sick, I've only just got the Iron joke - blargh :(
^No, it was a really bad joke even by my standards. Sorry. I'll try to remember to use the preview function before inflicting my posts in future :)
No, no Twisted Logic! It's my diseased brain :)
G'night *)
WDW, I hope you are feeling better today. I think you gave it to me yesterday -- yukky day for sure! Except for the great Jake pics, of course.
Poor WDW! I hate that you aren't feeling well. You need proper rest and lots of healthy veggies and TONS of Jake!
I'm always happy to see Jake visiting, meeting, whatev, with directors, writers, etc. It take a very long time most of the time, for a film project to reach a point where the actual shoot begins. I don't recall ever seeing Jake lunching with Fincher or Gavin Hood before we learned he'd be collaborating with them. OTOH, the fact that he is friendly with people like Sam Mendes, Noah Baumbach, Burt Freundlich, etc. is reassuring to me. Jake knows a ton of people. He seems like a very social guy. Actors audition, and read, and meet endlessly.Sometimes a project is fast tracked and things start popping, but that's very rare. It seems like a hurry up and wait business. Frustrating. One thing is significant to me. It appears, and may only "appear" that Jake has cleared his schedule. Maybe something really important to him is bubbling along just below the surface and he wants to be ready to go when it's time. I hope.
Hi everyone :) Hope Monday is going as well as a Monday can. Still sick and working through it :(
Ooh Beckela - I'm sorry if I've given you the lurgy via my post - I must apologise to anyone who caught something from this infectious post - there'll be a new one up later today which hopefully shouldn't be so dangerous.
Thanks Bobbyanna - I'm looking forward to settling down with tons of Jake later on this evening.
That's an interesting comment - it sounds very frustrating. I've often wondered at what stage a leading actor is brought onboard. I've always had the feeling - which is probably way off mark - that once the actor is hired (after all the months of auditioning and waiting - re Jarhead), things move quite quickly.
I cannot believe that now Rendition is about to come out, Jake's not thinking of the next project. So let's hope you're right ;)
I get the feeling, from all I've read, that relationships are critical in the film business. Projects start in so many different ways, there's no set form for when anyone really comes on board. Sometimes an actor and a director, or a writer are friends and collaborate together on getting something started. Other times, it's a studio and/or producers. Gavin Hood was recently announced to direct Wolverine, the X-Men spin off. Clearly he was hired by a studio and producers with $$$$. So now he will pick his cast, which starts with Hugh Jackman and maybe a couple of others already in place. OTOH, maybe the whole notion of doing Rendition came out of political discussions on the state of the world and Kelli Sane just developed a story and persuaded Gavin to take a look. Then they had to find producers and deal with casting. At some point Jake got involved and, it's often the case, maybe he recommended they look at Peter. Or vice versa. Who can say. Maybe a producer Meryl Streep trusted talked her into doing it. Maybe Jake convinced Gavin to use Reese. We will never know. I remember reading that Wes Bentley was working on Four Feathers with Heath and was then scheduled to do Monster's Ball. Wes had to back out of Monster's Ball, but he talked to Heath about it and helped set up an audition for him. Ang Lee saw Heath in Monster's Ball. Sometimes a director will have someone in mind. I think Fincher said, or Mendes said, he had Jake in mind all along. Don't know. Sometimes I love to read those articles people write about who was considered for certain roles before a movie got made.
