I'm not surprised that Jake's looking a little sleepy in a new picture taken of him leaving the August restaurant in NYC after brunch with a young lady on Sunday - he's not stopped in the last couple of weeks: festivals, tennis finals, baseball games, meeting directors for lunch, oh and hopefully signing up for new movies (see post below). It shows that talk of Jake Gyllenhaal in a Red Sox cap was genuine - he took the goodies home with him.
Another thing Jake's been doing is posing for Michael Stipe's Futurepicenter photographic website. Everyday Michael Stipe takes a photograph of a well known figure wearing his glasses. Yesterday was the turn of the Jake Frames. So, at long last, all those people (including myself) who wanted to see what Jake looks like in 'proper' glasses, as opposed to expensive sunglasses which hide his eyes or that poor excuse for a pair of spectacles in Proof, can have a good look and will not be disappointed. Sunday's model, by the way, was friend Mario Batali.
Zodiac DVD releases
January 8 2008 has now been announced as the release date for the all singing and all dancing director's cut edition of Zodiac. And here is the good news: 'this two-disc set will be loaded with special features. Extras include two feature commentaries. One is a solo act with David Fincher. The other is a track with Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., producer Brad Fischer, screenwriter James Vanderbilt and author James Ellroy. There's also the "Zodiac Deciphered" documentary, a bevy of featurettes on the visual effects, on the digital workflow, and sequence breakdowns (Blue Rock Springs, Lake Berryessa, and San Francisco). More featurettes go beyond the film as there is a Zodiac Speaking feature, a featurette on Linguistic Analysis, a "His Name Was Arthur Leigh Allen" featurette, and video and text-based extras on geographical and behavioral profiling. Also included are the trailers and TV spots.'
Today, I had a very pleasant reminder that September 24, the release date for the UK edition of Zodiac, is almost upon us. While buying some comfort food for my bug (chocolate and cupcakes), I stumbled across this:
Now I know I already have this on DVD, and I know that I have seen this film more times than David Fincher, but how can anyone resist this vastly improved cover image? Not to mention, it also comes with a half-hour feature. Always good to see Jake in my supermarket - it doesn't happen enough.
Includes pictures from IHJ. Please make sure you keep on reading and enjoy the good news of Brothers from today's earlier post.

Hi WDW! Can't stay to post properly now,but must say I too was delighted to see the Zodiac stand in my local Sainbury's today too! Felt ridiculously proud and grinned like a Cheshire cat. Can't wait to get my sticky little mitts on a copy of this edition AND the Director's cut!
Hope the choccy and cupcakes help! If your throat is still sore and you can take aspirin, gargling with a dose of Soluble aspirin 300mg and then swallowing it is great for easing the soreness and achey limbs, plus it gets your temperature down.
Have to say the photo in the "Redsox" cap makes me melt, he looks so wistful!
Hope to "see" you all later! Keep warm and cosy,WDW!
Hi Nadine - isn't it great they're giving the film such a push like this. I wasn't expecting it and it took me ages to notice it. But a big thrill :D
At the moment I'm gargling with corona, it seems to be doing the trick ;) See you later!
I'm so happy for the UK Gyllenhaalics that this is finally (almost) here. And now that we have a date for our Director's Cut, I'm even more excited. But I don't for a moment regret having bought the bare-bones release...considering that I've watched it at least 10 times already.
Take care of yourself, WDW! Hope you feel better in a jiff. :)
Hi Cherita - I don't regret buying my barebones DVD either - I've played it so many times. I can't wait for the January release though - I can never get enough of Jake commentaries in particular.
WDW, again you give us great Jake gifts!! Am so excited about the movie news with Jake/Tobey. Love the dorky/totally cute pic of Jake in Michael Stipes glasses. And just love all the news of Jake out and about!
Btw, thanks so much for the "Zodiac" special edition DVD news. Can't wait to see it!
Hi Get Real - good to see you :) It's been such a good day - great, great news about Brothers (I've never wanted to give Tobey Maguire a hug before but I do now), new pics and Jake in glasses. And bumping into his movie stand in my supermarket. I did get a couple of off looks taking the picture but who cares?! It's such good news to have a January date confirmed for the special release of Zodiac - I was sure it would be around then but it's good to have confirmation.
Do we know where Jake stays when he is going about in the Village - do his parents have a house there?
Hey Positively pia - I wouldn't be surprised if Jake has an apartment there himself. It would make sense, considering how much he loves the place and I'm sure he wouldn't want to rely on Maggie and Peter.
how is it that the paps dont discover where he stays/lives? is there some kind of agreement about this - ?
just wondering. . .
Hey WDW! Thanks for all this great stuff today! I totally forgive you for spreading your cold/flu to me ;)
I'm a big REM fan, and I had a big crush on Michael Stipe back in the day so to find out about him and Jake collaborating on something is wonderful:) It's not the best picture of Jake I've ever seen, but it's just so cool that Michael Stipe took it.
Love the pic of the Zodiac stand! I've got half a mind, if my local supermarket have one, to ask if I can have it when they've finished to put my Jake DVDs on. Then again, it might be a bit too weird... It's probably just the Lemsip talking!
Anyway, hope you're getting better WDW,and thanks for all the Jake treats today:)
Hi Twisted Logic - hope you're feeling a bit better. I've moved onto the heavy stuff now - red wine and dairy milk. It seems to help, that and some Jake.
I did think about asking for the stand myself - I can just imagine Mr WDW's face when I turn up with that outside the flat! I love the picture of Bespectacled Jake - wallpaper and all - but I have to own up to disliking REM rather intensely. I actually have a bit of a REM phobia. I like a couple of songs but, generally, they're too depressing for me (strange, as I'm a Smiths fan). They're on a par with Radiohead whom I used to see before they were famous and I didn't like them then. I seem to have meandered off....
Is that the end of The Spooky Twins then?! It had to happen sometime I suppose. I love The Smiths though-- never thought they were depressing, quite the opposite in fact. The people who call them depressing just don't get it imo :)
Anyway, the Lemsip's wearing off now, so I'm off to bed. Goodnight, and thanks again for today's posts WDW. Glad you're on the mend :)
I'm baa-aack! (a la "Poltergeist").
Having now had time to read the impressive list of features (especially the Jake and RDJ commentary!),it looks like the Director's Cut of "Zodiac" is going to be great value for money, but I can't wait until January,I'll have to buy the standard copy to keep me going until then!
I've got two editions of Donnie Darko on DVD,but I'd still like to track down the edition I first borrowed from the library which had a great commentary from Jake and the director(Richard Kelly?) on it. Great fun!
Great fun too the Stipe-snap of Jake looking delightfully dorky in Michael's glasses (I think someone very myopic was in charge of the decor where the pic was taken - better call Colin and Justin!). Have to say,I loved the Hal-specs Jake wore in "Proof"! Grrrrrrrrrrr!
And that REM masterpiece,"Everybody Hurts" takes me back to that photo of Jake in his Redsox cap. Yes he looks tired, ever likely to,but he also looks a bit sad to me, which sends my "Rescuer Complex"into over-drive! Do you remember "Brimful of Asha" by Corner-shop, with the line "Everybody needs a bosom for a pillow"? Well Jake looks like he needs one in that shot. I wish the pillow that is my bosom had a bit more stuffing in it,but Jake's welcome to snuggle up for some comfort on it any time! (Nadine dreams of stroking thick dark hair, making "there, there" noises,..."It's ok..it's ok" Oh crikey, now I'm into SNIT territory...thud!).
Anyway,goodnight folks,time to get back in the strait-jacket ;-)
Can't go without saying I forgive you,WDW,for dissing the mighty "Radiohead"! (magnanimous of me,huh?). As with Twisted Logic an The Smiths,I don't find Radiohead depressing either, all the angst was/is cathartic/uplifting for me :-)
Now I really must be off to my padded cell. Cheery bye all ;-)
G'night Twisted Logic - hope you feel better in the morning *)
Oh Nadine - thanks for that comment! I've had so many laughs this evening and this one about did me in - all this talk of bosoms.
That DDarko is well worth having - I think I got it very cheaply from dvd.co.uk. I love Jake's commentaries. And yes that decor was strangely disturbing and not a little hectic. I like Everybody Hurts when it's sung by anyone but REM, such as the Corrs or Alex Parks.
I reckon you're going to have good dreams tonight ;) Chuckle :D
Thanks for forgiving me :D I know most people rave over REM and I have tried - I've bought a couple of their albums (liked Shiny Happy People) but I think I'm more of a Razorlight kinda girl :D
At the moment I'm gargling with corona, it seems to be doing the trick ;)
Do you remember "Brimful of Asha" by Corner-shop . . .
You guys are making my laugh out loud - must be all the good Jake news today. Love him in the Red Sox cap, but also with Michael Stipe's glasses slightly askew with hint of a lopsided grin, he's adorable. So many great R.E.M. songs *sigh* one of my favorite bands.
Hi Marina - even if you have the flu, there is no cure like Jake and I've laughed out loud so many times today I've lost count :D A great Jake day. I'll say no more on REM - I can see whn I'm outnumbered - but yes Jake is adorable in that photo.
I'm watching Marie Antoinette now. That film always puts a smile on my face (except, of course, when I know they're going to have their heads cut off :\).
^^LOL Did I hear you were dissing Radiohead too? :)
I've made the Jake glasses pic my new screensaver because it's so cute - everytime I look at that grin. :)
Er... as if I would do such a thing Marina....
I've just been relooking at Glasses Jake myself - so adorable. And can I say - I'm really loving the beard :D
^^I know, I'm entranced by this picture, because we've got dozens of pics of his spectacularly gorgeous physical self, but this one, besides being cute, shows his personality, humor and warmth, to me. :)
I'm glad I'm alone at the moment. Bosox Baseball cap!Jake had me groaning outloud. He is just so delicious it makes my heart ache!!!
I am totally looking forward to the Zodiac special edition in January. It will be my birthday present to me. WDW, you have some really unique rememdies for dealing with your ailments LOL!!! BTW: I went to the website for Brothers (Danish film) and watched the trailer to refresh my memory. If Sheridan directs Jake and Toby in this, it will be very good for Jake. He is perfect for this role. Not to diss Toby, but anyone could have played him. The thing to remember is that role calls for someone who is believable as a solid, stable, responsible guy. I wonder who they'll get to play the wife. Personally, I would get Naomi Watts. But that's just me.The female lead's role is important. But not unique.
Sorry for the double. But I hope whoever they get for the female lead is believeable as someone a gorgeous "black sheep" brother would "be supportive" of. LOL! For example, as much as I love Samantha Morton, I don't want her to get it. I would want someone who is attractively, beautifully 'plain.'Can Kate Winslet be got up to look plain? Or Rachel Weisz? How about Julianne Moore? Or Jennifer Connolly? Maybe Jennifer Garner?
Naomi Watts is TOO old for Jake and Tobey.
Kate Winslet would be wonderful.
Julianne Moore, (whom I love) is way too old. She's in her mid-40s. (But gorgeous imho).
Jennifer Connolly was the first actress that came to my mind, but I fear she might be too old to realistically pass as Tobey's wife.
I just hope it isn't the ubiquitous Scarlett J.!
Hi everyone!
Interesting idea thinking who the lucky leading lady would be Bobbyanna and anons. Hmmm. I do like Kate Winslett very much but I tend to think they may go with a newcomer - if you have two big male stars, maybe that's enough? And I'm not just thinking of the salaries.
I'll say no more on REM - I can see when I'm outnumbered
I won't say anything either then, but consider yourself severely frowned at! :)
What a dilemma - do I buy the UK Zodiac or wait for the US special edition? I'll probably wait.
Nadine - that Donnie Darko DVD is pretty easy to get hold of I think. I bought one in my local Fopp (recently closed, boo) for £3 a couple of months ago. :)
I can definitely feel the weight of that frown Clare - and I think you should buy both DVDs as punishment ;)
What on earth is a Fopp? :D
Fopp is (or was) a very cool CD/DVD store. They seem to closing their branches. Or they are being bought out by HMV, which is worse. :)
What kind of a punishment is buying two Jake DVD's? :D
Ahh - no Fopps in these parts. You're right about the DVDs, so on second thoughts, you buy both DVDs and then give them to me. Excellent idea ;)
Looking forward to watching the Danish "Brothers" this week, and also thinking that this story might have attracted Jake for seaveral reasons: his own life of privilage vis a vis the life of those in military servce; his "wet dark wild" side that he has always relished; and, it seems to me, a rather evident care-taking tendency in his personal life.
Also it's a pressing contemporary story and concern - often heartbreaking. It could be a pwoerful script.
Thanks for the heads up on the DDarko DVD chaps.
Mmmmmmmm, the female lead in "Brothers",that will be an interesting piece of casting.
I can think of several actresses I'd rather it wasn't,but I'll be diplomatic for a change and not name names.
The one I'd love to see in the role is,alas, again too old I fear,i.e.Gillian Anderson. Definitely talented enough, decidedly gorgeous enough, but born too soon I'm afraid.
Hope you're feeling better today,WDW,laughter being the best medicine, along with Jaking, and you got plenty of both yesterday.
Work has been traumatically chaotic lately (dispensary being destroyed and refitted around us while we TRY to work!)and I'm plagued with back pain at the mo,so it's glorious to be here for a while, hot water bottle between me and the chair-back,to revel in the therapeutic J.Gyllenhaal Esquire. Just what the Doctor ordered!
Hi Positively pia - now you've given me a thought - that Jake may have been attracted to the role because of something left over in him from Jarhead, possibly. The fear of what's going on at home.
Hey Nadine - sorry to hear about your back and work dramas :( I'm feeling quite a bit better now - although I have completely lost my voice - and have just finished work. So I'm ready for some therapeutic Jake too ;D
It's strange but true that most of the actresses I favour may also be considered too old for the part. There must be some young talented actresses out there! I love Kirsten Dunst but somehow I think that would be a little too strange for this film :D I saw Marie Antoinette again last night - fabulous film.
