Peter speaks out on Rendition, and Jake's all smiles

When I was in Toronto I picked up the local free newspaper, the Metro, and was delighted to see an interview with Peter Sarsgaard. Rendition seemed to receive little coverage in the press, other than the occasional picture from the gala, I suppose not surprisingly considering George, Brad and Angelina were all in town at the time en force, to put it mildly. So any attention was good and, as Peter has one of the loveliest voices I've ever heard, I could imagine it as I read his discussion of the practice of rendition. It's no surprise to read that Peter's views are conflicted, just like our own, and just as Jake's have seemed to be. It's that kind of subject, it's that kind of film.

This is what Peter said. 'I feel that anything my government does in secrecy that compromises my personal liberty is not why I elected them and it makes me furious... I do also feel that in extraordinary times you have to do extraordinary things and it is a balancing act between personal freedoms and public safety that the government needs to deal with.' Peter is well aware that his film will have no impact on government policy concerning rendition but 'he believes it may help boost public awareness of the issue.' 'I think that public sentiment is changed or people are made aware in tides of things... It's not one film or one thing they read in the newspaper or one person they know that's had something happen to them... so I think we've reached a point where the public's mind is fertile, people are in a place where they can think about it because we haven't had another terrorist attack in the United States on (a September 11, 2001) scale.'

While we're on the subject, I thought I'd have a look at my Entertainment Weekly from the other week and see what Reese Witherspoon said about the film and what it portrays. 'It doesn't smash people over the head with a message - you're not even sure if the husband is innocent or guilty - which is one of the reasons I wanted to do it.' And that is all she says on the subject. The reporter comments 'But as for her own ideological opinions, even on the subject of extraordinary rendition, not even the most brutal celebrity-interview interrogation techniques can make her talk'.

I can see Reese's point of view, when considering the treatment Jake received in places on the internet after the publication of his own comments. However, it also makes me want to stand up and applaud Jake and Peter for daring to speak up with an opinion, not just on this but on many matters making it very worthwhile to listen to them.

Gyllenbits

It turns out that it wasn't only renowned journalist Diane Sawyer who was dazzled by Jake's outstanding and truly memorable performance on Saturday Night Live. SNL's Musical Director Katreese Barnes is featured in the Dream Job section of the New York Post. It's no surprise to hear that Jake's appearance on SNL is one of the very reasons why it is a dream job - I need no convincing. 'Saturday night, when the sketches come together, can be really magical. Like when Jake Gyllenhaal performed his version of the “Dreamgirls” song - that was a really rewarding moment for me. It was a Thursday night when he had the idea to sing the song, and they called me down to rehearse with him. On Friday, we brought in some backup singers, and he started gaining more confidence, and then by Saturday night he blew me away.' It's also good to hear it was all Jake's idea and his confidence grew and he probably exceeded even his own expectations. Amazing.

It seems that when Jake was in the Monster seats at Fenway Park on Friday night, he was seen wearing a Red Sox cap. Hmmmmm. He was also spotted chatting to Tom Werner, chairman of the Red Sox. I do wish we had some more photos of this event - thank heavens tennis spectators have better phone cameras.

And finally...

...there are new pictures of Jake out in wonderfully windy NYC with Noah Baumach on Saturday. I love the expressions in these photos as Jake clearly had a good time, listening and talking in an extremely animated way about what wouldn't we love to know. I particularly enjoy this first photo - Jake's supreme confidence side-by-side with Noah's shock. Call it a foible, or the consumer in me, but I can't help feeling interested in Jake's make of phone in the final shot.

Wow, WDW, I didn't know Peter had been interviewed at all. Thanks for that! I love to hear from him almost as much as Jake--he's so intelligent and articulate.

I also got a kick out of the Katreese Barnes comments this morning. But then, it should surprise none of us that Jake is a big bright spot in the work day of anyone he works with. Except maybe Brian Geraghty, and Lucas Black, and David Fincher, and Roland Emmerich. *ducks incoming tomatoes*

Thanks Cherita - I was picking up everything I could in Toronto but so many films were on show Rendition didn't get much of a look in but I was thrilled to see this interview with Peter.

Chuckle at your working with Jake comment :) I think when he behaves himself he's fine but I suspect he gets bored on occasion!

Great post, WDW! I enjoyed reading Peter's and Reese's thoughts on the subject of extraordinary rendition, as well as Jake's, and applaud them for standing up and saying what they think. I really am on pins and needles waiting to see this film, especially since I saw the trailer over the weekend.

Jake's wonderful SNL performance - I kinda wondered if the skit was Jake's idea and am not surprised that it was. It really was great, we know he's very talented, and now also know that he has a great voice, and a warm sense of humor. Looks like he may have another project in the works too from the looks of these pictures in NYC with Noah Baumbach.

Thanks! :)

Hi Marina! I can't tell you how hard it is to keep my mouth shut about Rendition as I just want to shout out how wonderful it is in a completely spoilery way but I won't do that. I will do a non-spoilery review later this week.

I think Jake and Peter should definitely be applauded for speaking out. The 'No comment' approach is evry easy and safe and not what we're used to being Gyllenhaalics.

So true, we Gyllenhaalics have so much to admire. Speaking of which, how could I have forgotten to comment on this? Jake wearing a Red Sox cap at the game Friday night made my week! I just knew he couldn't possibly be a Yankees fan! I wish there were more pictures too. ;)

I know Marina! I heard a while ago that Jake's a Yankee fan but he supports the Dodgers when in LA, so I don't quite know how the Red Sox fit into the equation! Maybe someone gave him the cap when he went into the Monster seats or maybe he doesn't really have one team, being a basketball fan above all.

Hi Monica! - the link doesn't work... thanks though

WDW, HERE is the link to the pics, Monica posted. :)

Another fantastic post, girl! I love all these great pics of Jake, at TIFF, at the Open, at the Red Sox (although I am a proud NYer and Yankees fan) and especially love the pics of him and Noah Baumbach. Would LOVE if they did a movie together. Loved "Squid and the Whale".

Also, I totally agree that I really appreciate and applaud Jake and Peter for giving their opinions. It has been frustrating to see the snap judgements and nastiness of people around the internet to Jake's comments. And I love that Jake was the one to come up with the "Dreamgirls" routine. He is so cool! ;D

Hi Get Real - thanks for such a kind comment! I appreciate that. I think you're in good company with the Yankees - I've always heard Jake was a big fan of their's.

It has been frustrating to see the snap judgements and nastiness of people around the internet to Jake's comments. - I couldn't agree more. People are so quick to judge and so slow to think sometimes. I admire Jake for voicing an opinion when it is so easy for an A-lister not to trouble themselves. And thanks for the link :)

WDW, I am SO loving these posts from TIFF!!!! Yes, I was there and you and I spent quality (!) time together, but reading about it through your eyes is like being there all over again. Thanks. And I know what you mean I want to talk about RENDITION in a spoiler-ish way, too!!! I can hardly contain myself. I was very impressed with the comments Peter made. In another Red Carpet interview, Reese said that it was important to see the human story, ther personal story behind these government policies. To see how these things affect families in a personal way. I thought that was a pretty brave thing for her to say.

thats a great picture of Jake apparently amused and Noah with a WTF! look, like a deer caught in the headlights. Im so glad Jake is at ease with photogs and just goes about his business - may it always be so! - what an incredible treat for us.

So glad to hear Katreese Barnes was "blown away" as were many of us - still remember worrying my head as to how Jake was going to follow Jason Timberlake's "D in a B" the previous week: hah! that's when I stopped worrying about Jake's career.

looking forward to your Rendition review, WDW - !

hope you're feeling better: guess didnt stay home in bed, but went to work. take care!

Hi Bobbyanna - I know, it's amazing! I wish we could have that time back again now. It is fun re-exploring it now, though. Thanks for that piece from Reese. I did her a disservice then as, previously, I'd not heard her voice much about it at all. But I'm glad to hear that. Oh yes, and I think our time together with Jake in the gala clearly counts as quality time :D - not to mention the other times when he was with us in spirit.

Come on, you guys; SPOIL US!

Hi positivelypia - you snuck in there! I love that picture with Noah - I love Jake's confidence and his sense of fun. Good to know he can find humour in the pap situation. A shock for poor Noah though!

Thanks for the get well wishes *) I'm all right so long as I don't speak - so a blessing for most :D

It's sooo tempting as Jake was incredibly sexy! But the restraint... ;) I'm going to work on my review when I have some time to think mid week.

I'd LOVE to "spoil" you!!! Honestly? In Rendition, I saw a very different Jake. I mean it was definitely Jake, but totally, another side of him. And I could discuss it for hours. Days even.
Look at it this way. October 12th isn't far off. And frankly, there have been a lot of screen caps already showing you how absolutely gorgeous he is. All I can say is, Gavin Hood "saw" something in Jake and he really played it. From the very first nano second. And I hope they make another movie together. Like Right Now. I think I already said that on another thread. OK. Sorry WDW. I will zip it. So.

OK. Funny story. I live in Michigan. Apparently, Russell Crowe is friends with the University of Michigan football coach and came in from Washington, DC where he is shooting a movie, to give a pep talk to the U of M team.He follows U of M football. He owns a rugby team in Australia. A journalist asked Russell which of U of M's top two players he might want for his team, and he laughed and said, "I want Jake!" My immediate reaction was, "Well of course! How could you not! I mean. Who doesn't!"
Then I realized it wasn't OUR Jake, but he was talking about some 6'7" 300+ football player. LOL. OK. I was just trying to not talk about Rendition.

From Variety:

"Gyllenhaal, Maguire eye 'Brothers'
Duo in talks for Sheridan remake
By TATIANA SIEGEL

Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal are in negotiations to star in Jim Sheridan's "Brothers" for Relativity Media.
The film, a remake of Susanne Bier's Danish-language war drama, centers on a man (Maguire) who is sent to fight in Afghanistan while his black-sheep brother (Gyllenhaal) cares for his wife and child.

Bier's film, which was released in 2004, stars Connie Nielsen, Ulrich Thomsen and Nikolaj Lie Kaas.

In the remake, which David Benioff is writing, Gyllenhaal would play the younger brother and Maguire the older one.

"Brothers" is scheduled to begin shooting in early November.

Relativity's Ryan Kavanaugh is producing alongside Michael De Luca and Joni Sighvatsson.

Relativity most recently produced the Russell Crowe-Christian Bale starrer "3:10 to Yuma," which recently opened at No. 1.

Gyllenhaal, whose credits include "Zodiac" and "Brokeback Mountain," most recently starred in "Rendition," which unspooled last week at the Toronto Film Festival.

Maguire is hot on the heels of Sony's "Spider-Man 3" and also recently appeared in "The Good German.""

Chapeau to Peter and Jake for taking sides about some hot subject as extraordinary renditions, they're intelligent and brave and we knew that...:)

And Jake's performance on SNL, well...another example of Jake being brave...and AMAZING.;)

I am with Pia on encouraging the photogs for our pleasure - naughty Pia :)

Thanks again, WDW * How smart is Peter - love him.

And Jake's new project sounds great. I was wrong about him waiting for Rendition's premiere.

Hi everyone! Off work sick so plenty of time to natter today - so long as you don't get too close.

Great comment Bobbyanna - I love that Russell Crowe story. You mean there are other Jakes out there? I suppose there must be...

I definitely agree with your interpretation of Gavin's use of Jake - it's about time a director made full use of Jake's physicality and sexiness ;)

Thanks Anon for the Variety article. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw the press this morning. I've been so keen to hear something and it was a great start to my day.

Hi Xenia - time and time again Jake demonstrates why he's our guy, and it's good to learn more about Peter too.

Anouska - the project sounds great and for once I'm glad you were wrong *)

You're right,WDW,Peter does have a lovely, mellifluous voice with which to speak out and he has the bottle to do just that, even when the subject's controversial, along with his wife and his brother-in-law! Go Gyllen-gaards!

My eyes widened when you used "Gyllenbits" as a heading! I wondered just how candid a photograph you were going to show us! Obviously I'd got the wrong end of the..er..stick! ;-D

I did read somewhere that the "Dreamgirls" skit was Jake's idea, but I hadn't realised he'd come up with it as late as the Thursday before transmission, giving him only 48hours to hone it to perfection. Not surprised Katreese Barnes was "blown away!" Even in a dress, the man has balls!

Also in the "didn't I read something...?" department,I have an inkling that Chris is a big "Redsox" fan,so maybe,as he wasn't there in person(I don't think),Jake was wearing Chris's cap so he could support his team by proxy.

Did you mean "make of phone" in the final paragraph? "Fun" a Freudian slip, perhaps? ;-) It seems he'd have to be surgically removed from his phone,I'm always intrigued as to who he's calling when it's welded to his ear or he's feverishly texting. I'm secretly hoping he's a Nokia guy,cos I'm a Nokia girl ;-)
