The puzzle of Zodiac's missing minutes - and the stuff of dreams

The one bright spot on the horizon for the beginning of the new working week on Monday is that the shelves of DVD stores and supermarkets across the UK will be filling up (and hopefully emptying) with copies of the Zodiac DVD. This coincides with more discussion about the January release of the Director's Cut edition. There is a debate going on about how many extra minutes we will be getting for our money. One site has it that we will be getting another full 25 minutes while another puts it down to just 5 or 6.

At Hollywood Elsewhere, reporter Jeffrey Wells tried to find out the facts about the length in a manner all too reminiscent of Robert Graysmith's obsession, enacting his own tribute to an exceptional film, which is all about the detail. 'The whole point of Zodiac is obsession. The fun is in the obsessive wading through detail after detail, clue after clue, hint after hint. It follows, therefore, that the Director's Cut DVD should give free rein to the film's investigative intrigues (Jake Gyllenhaal's, Mark Ruffalo's, Robert Downey's...everyone's). This naturally means more details, hints and clues and more running time to explore each one. In this light, five or six extra minutes isn't nearly enough. I was looking for at least an extra 20 or 25 minutes. This is very disappointing.' How I chuckled at this comment to the site: 'From the begining to the end, the film was 157 minutes. I've walked it.'

Slashfilm is going for the optimistic approach and is predicting a full 25 minutes of extra detail. However, the fact that the source is the very Jeffrey Wells who is lamenting the lack of extra minutes is a little perplexing.

Movie City News has compiled a list of its top ten films for the year - up to September. Despite declaring with sadness that 2007 has, to date, been a poor year for film, the feature suggests that this is of no matter when set against the quality of the top film - Zodiac.

'This is several films in one while also being a complete movie on its own. There are several main characters, several suspects, several motives, several subplots and they all fit together somehow. The hero of the film changes, with the focus on Gyllenhaal, then Robert Downey Jr., then Ruffalo, then Gyllenhaal again and yet it works. That is ultimately the most brilliant part of Zodiac: it takes so many risks, isn't afraid of being unconventional and it all works. There is no fat to be trimmed off of the long running time and there is no better way to tell this story. The last half an hour of the film will stay with me for the rest of my life. In fact, the entire film will and that is the sign of a true masterpiece.'

A couple of months ago, I posted a link to a video which showed how special effects had played a surprisingly dominant - albeit subtle - role in Zodiac, including scenes where they would never be suspected. Now that the time is here when many of us, although not all, have had a chance to see the film for ourselves, I thought it was timely to repeat the link. The video itself is of very high quality.

Jake makes dreams come true at TIFF

No doubt many of you will have heard that some lucky members of the Brokeback community were able to get Jake to sign one of his original Brokeback shirts at the Rendition Gala in Toronto - two weeks ago tonight. I'm thrilled to see that the video of their moment can now seen here. It captures so much of the atmosphere that I'm remembering tonight.

And finally...

Jake has (probably) been spotted in LA again - this time chatting with a friend in the lobby of the Four Seasons Beverly Hills Hotel in LA. And he was wearing That Cap again... the one with the Big Red B. This picture was posted at DC last night (by Ania, I believe) and I have to repeat it here.

Includes pictures from IHJ and Jakeg.fan-sites.org.

I hope there will be at least a couple of commentaries on the Zodiac Directors Cut! I guess they have to deal with Higher Powers, but it interested me tht Richard Kelley said the programmers were very cool and he could work with them to get in some stuff that he wanted in. sorta working below the radar. Id like to hear alot about digital stuff. so much backgrounmd info can be woven into the commentaries.

Ive not been tempted by the bare bones DVD since Im drooling in anticipation of lots of background info. hope Im not diappointed!

wonder how Jake got past the paps at LAX. more power to him!

sorry for second post - just thot maybe the paps werent checking flights coming in from Austin Texas haha.

Wow, WDW, so many wonderful things in this post -

What a dream come true, just having Jake's Brokeback shirt alone, and then having him sign it!It was exciting hearing everyone calling his name - and he's so professional and nice, and handsome, he made someone very happy, whoever it was whose hand he shook! Almost like being there - I can't imagine how exciting it must have been to actually be there. :)

And he's still wearing the Red Sox cap, that makes me happy. :)

Looking forward to the Director's Cut of Zodiac, and 25 extra minutes! I'm glad it's getting the credit it so deserves. It is a masterpiece, and that's my favorite still pic of him from the movie, the "pensive profile shot" and the scene in the movie where he's doing the pen-and-ink drawing of the description of the hooded killer (or is it from when he's figuring out the code?), all deep in thought.

Cheers, WDW!

Hi Positively Pia - I think there will be two commentaries - and one will have Jake on it. I was listening to the DDarko commentary last night and Jake just knows how to add to a film. But his commentaries are from a few years ago now - I'm ready to hear grown up Jake discuss his films.

Jake sure knows how to slip through airports... (most of the time)

For your second comment ;)

Hi Marina - thanks so much for your comment. Almost like being there - I can't imagine how exciting it must have been to actually be there. :)

This video's so good as that is what it's like, everyone calling out and hoping Jake will notice. And, thank heavens, each of my times, he has. It's so exciting and even though it's just seconds or a minute or two, it makes everything worthwhile. It was such an exciting time. I wonder if Jake realises how he makes dreams come true for some of us - I hope so, as it's such a sweet thing to be able to do for people and fans.

I thought you'd like the cap sighting!

^^I could feel it, a little bit of what it must have been like to see him at TIFF. He's got a seriousness, or an intensity about him that is quite something. How lucky you are to have been there!

So many great movies too coming out right now, I'm planning to see Eastern Promises this weekend - that one looks interesting, and of course, counting the days until Rendition! :)

*Shakes Fist* Damn you, Jake Gyllenhaal, and That Cap with the big red B. Save for the day after the night before, the Red Sox have not won a game. AND I BLAME THAT GYLLENHAAL!

Take the damn cap OFF!

And somewhere out in the scrubby hills of Southern California a man removes his Baseball Cap with the big red B and the baby jesus weeps tears of joy for all is right with the world once again.

Boston Red Sox - 8
Tampa Bay Devil Rays - 1

Toronto Blue Jays - 5
New York Yankees - 4

^^LOL :)

We did lose dramatically the night he was there . . . but I really liked him in the cap . . .

I can't choose between the Red Sox and The Gyllenhaal! ;)

Gosh but Baseball gets the blood pumping over the Atlantic!

I'm hopeful that the DVD sales of "Zodiac" will be very brisk, and not just with JG adherents such as us. Fincher's film seems to have been a slow-burner.
Given the time to analyse it, many of the critics seem to have realised what a brilliant film it is and are singing its praises just in time to persuade many film lovers that this is a masterpiece they must have in their collection.

Let's hope that the "Slashfilm" take on the Director's Cut is the accurate one and we get a full 25 minutes more of the story itself,as well as all the other extras. Never enough Jake, never enough...even with a hysterical Afro. Jake was obviously amused by it too.

As for the video clip of the fans lucky enough (and persistent enough)to attract Jake's attention amid all the mayhem going on,good for them!! What an exquisite possession,Jake's Brokeback shirt, signed by the man himself,in front of your very eyes! I loved the way he leaned in to let the guy in the hat take their picture together and make another fan's year by squeezing in one more handshake before he was forced to hurry away. Jake seems to really appreciate the love and support of his fans and knows how much just a word,a smile or a touch will mean to people who have gone to a lot of trouble and waited for hours to see him for a few precious minutes/seconds. What a sweetheart!

OMG!

I'm thrilled that the pic I found at Jakeg.fan-sites.org is here :DDDDD
This is AMAZING!
Thank you soooo much!

PS. I wish I could watch that performance Jake gave in Sundance...

Morning everyone and a happy Saturday :D

Hey Marina - I think you're right about Jake's intensity. When you're in a line hoping to see him, it really is intense and a heart-pounding experience. I think Jake does take his red carpet duties very seriously.

Felicia! What a rollercoaster of emotion - I'm glad Jake took his cap off for you and all is well with the world again. Looks like they could be feeling pretty gloomy in Tampa Bay though ;)

Hey Nadine! I think sales of the Zodiac DVD should be pretty good in the UK. I hope anyway.

I find the video clip hard to watch because it feels too close at the moment. It'll take a while before I can enjoy seeing pictures/videos of the Gala. It was like that with Cannes too. For a while it feels too personal. I suppose I'm still processing. When you suddenly see Jake getting out of a car, turning a corner, coming out of a door and then walking towards you or waving at you, it really is a dream come true. I think he realises that. His time on the carpet is always short. At the Gala Bafta lady kept going back for him to drag him along. I suppose the film had to start on time and it almost did!

Ania Welcome! I'm so glad you found that photo - how it made me laugh! So not a good look on Jake... :D I'd love to see footage of that show too.

Hey Felicia, as a New Yorker there can be no gloating about Yankees losing. ;)

WDW, love that video of Jake and the fans at TIFF. Really special to see that. And I can't wait for the "Zodiac" special edition with commentary. I hope Jake and RDJ did theirs together. Would love to hear their interaction. Had a cute Jake moment yesterday. I had to get my Mac looked at and the tech guy saw that I has a Jake video from IHJ on my desktop. He started to say he likes Jake and that his mom is a big Jake fan, lol. I always like when moments like that happen, lol. :D

And LMAO at 'afro!Jake! Thanks for the pic, Ania.

Morning WDW -

I can see that Jake appreciates his fans from that video clip, and it's very sweet, and that he takes it seriously. :)

Also, I love that he doesn't take himself so seriously that he doesn't mind being photographed in amusing pictures, like the one with the 'fro and the Michael Stipe glasses, in which he's adorable, and nothing can hide that.

He's the best! :)

I had a Jake moment yesterday in wime and cheese store! :) :) Scruffy old guy I think a dedicated imbiber, wearing a Red Sox cap, grumgy white tee and sweater, said to me "You're beautiful!" (Jake's line to Ellen Pompeo) A Jake manifestation? You bet! (I call 'em as I see 'em) :) :)

^^Pia, love it! :)

LOLOLOL, Pia! :D

Well, the Mac tech guy was pretty cute and young so that helped, lol. ;D

Hi Get Real - that would be so cool if RDJ and Jake did their commentaries together - I love the way Jake sparks off people and I can imagine it being a riot with the two of them! Fingers crossed on that one.

I like your cute Jake moment with the Mac guy! Sometimes you never can tell - I reckon there are more of us out there than we think and it's great when these moments happen.

Hi Marina Jake is definitely the best. I'd love to see Jake's choice of fancy dress for a party :) I bet he can be really elaborate.

Hey Positively Pia the Beautiful - a little Jake moment for you too - can I say though that I like the sound of Get Real's guy better? :D

You have given me a laugh this afternoon - now I really should go out and buy some chocolate...

Hey there!

Wow you're good!! I'm the one that took the video you mention here! lol. Just the other day I was trying to figure out how to put it in a downloadable format and decided to upload it to youtube. I haven't been back to youtube since! lol. Now the link is here. Very very cool. I just put up a thread on IHJ under Jake Encounters and of course there's a very detailed thread about it on EnnisJack.com, under Member Connection. I've just put up some screencaps as well.

It's amazing isn't it, how such a short period of time can change your life? I keep reliving those seconds over and over again in my mind, it was so intense! People keep asking me, why didn't you reach out and touch him? Why didn't you push through and try to smell him? And I'm like, because I had to capture the moment. I wanted the sounds and the pictures and the excitement captured because then it would feel as if I did touch him.

Anyways, just discovered your blog last week and I love it. - Em

Hey Em! Thanks so much for commenting here and CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I'm not a member of Bettermost so I've not seen your account there but I'd certainly heard of it (are you Smilesalot?) and was so impressed and happy to hear of this wonderful encounter and thn be able to see it!

I am so in awe of you that you managed to do the video. I've seen Jake several times now and I've only managed to get two decent pictures because I'm so overawed by the situation and there is so much to take in - I just want to look at him! So hats off to you that you were able to do that and what a record for you. At the gala, a good friend made a short video of Jake and I treasure that.

I understand completely what you say. When I first 'encountered' Jake - at the Baftas in February - and he was so close and signed my magazine, my life was altered and I'm not the person I was before. Not least because of the closeness it's given me to the people that I shared that with. I wonder if Jake can ever realise waht a power of good he is in our lives after we come face to face with him - and it is all good.

It would never occur to me to reach out and grab him because, as you say, it's the moment you're trying to take in and I can never forget that Jake's another human being, although a marvellous one. In Toronto I was pushed towards him by a pap behind me and I was really worried about treading on Jake's foot!

I'm so glad you like the site - if ever you feel like a chat, please email me :)

Thanks! You hear that little whoop at the end? We were totally freaking out! Then we had to run across the street so we could get in to watch Rendition.

I forgot this was posted on Bettermost. My main forum community is EnnisJack.com. Yes, I'm smilesalot. Well I've signed up here so I can join in the discussions.

Oh yes, thanks for what you said about not reaching out and touching him. It just never ocurred to me, I just respect him so much and it must be so overwhelming to have people pushing through and shoving to get at him. I know he sees probably a sea of faces and I didn't want to stand out as someone who invaded his space. He lets us into his space enough, what with the pieces of him he gives us in his movies.

More from me later, I'm sure. - Em

Hi Em - hey, I guessed right. I'm usually not that good at putting two and two together. I did hear the whoop at the end! At that minute I was waiting by the rop inside to see Jake walk past to go into the elevator to go on stage. You must have torn your way round! We were running to get to seats!

I'm afraid I've not been to EnnisJack either dspite being an avid reader of fanfic.

I think Jake must find it completely overwhelming at times but I think he realises why we're there but I certainly wouldn't want to disrespect him by grabbing him! (I'll save that for the second date - ooh, did I say that out loud ;) ) But at Cannes he showed that he loved people to call his name and I really think he enjoys it. It has to be bizarre though and whenever I see Jake in one of these situations I feel that the day has been as special for him as it has been for me, just in a different way! But so memorable. It's great to be there for him and with him on these special days and I'm proud I was there at the premieres of Zodiac and Rendition. To watch Rendition knowing Jake's in the theatre (at least for some of it), that's special. We're so lucky.

Thanks for coming back - do keep coming back - and thanks for sharing that wonderful video :D
