It's true, Jake Gyllenhaal can make us laugh - plus Robert and Jake's friendship

Hot on the heels of Jake Gyllenhaal's cameo in the SNL musical serenade of the hairy (in more ways than one) Iranian president, comes an article expressing admiration - and surprise - at Jake's sense of humour and comic timing. The admiration part I understand but the surprise? I thought Jake's comic timing in Bubble Boy and even The Good Girl was legendary. Didn't Jake even manage to get a laugh out of Zodiac ('Do people ever call me names?')? And, as I recall, there are two lines in particular that raise a laugh in what David Fincher describes as Jake's Torture Movie, and Jake's responsible for both. I've included this picture because I can't help smiling when I think of Jake up a tree.

So before we get down to celebrating Jake's sense of fun, which has brought many a laugh to filmsets over the last few years (just ask David Fincher, Gavin Hood, Anne Hathaway, Susan Sarandon, Austin Nichols and - if she'd been in a scene with him - Reese Witherspoon), let's look at what has been said. At the Rendition press conference 'Director Gavin Hood was ranting about the potential of film, Hollywood's hunger for money and why we need more movies like All the President's Men. It was well intentioned, and Hood should totally be a guest lecturer on college campuses. But he went on a wee bit too long about his idealistic visions of a Hollywood in which studios forget about their coffers.'

'That's when Gyllenhaal put an arm around him—the arm was key—and made a crack about Hood's next project...Wolverine. It was seriously hysterical. Jake made his director blush like a freshman boy in speech class. So, why won't Jake put that swift wit to use on camera? "His family is just very serious," says one Beverly Hills-agent type. "They want to see their kids in smart films with a political angle. And their family is obviously close."'

I did enjoy the part about Jake making Gavin blush like a schoolboy and that Jake's comment (how I wish I knew what he said) was 'seriously hysterical'. But I think it's a strange argument to say that Jake hasn't made a comic film because his family are so very serious - after all, Jake's first role was in the comedy City Slickers and later on Jake was a joy to behold in Bubble Boy. Just think of that scene when Jimmy tries to buy a bus ticket or - my personal favourite - when he attempts to steal the beer. Not much 'political angle' in that film, just plenty of bad taste, insults directed at everyone and the kind of humour that makes your sides ache. I know The Good Girl isn't a laugh a minute, but there are scenes in that which show Jake's comic timing to perfection and with great subtlety. In that film, Jake makes us, and Jennifer, both laugh and cry. As for the matter of whether it's the lack of a good comic script preventing Jake from sharing his humour with audiences - I find it hard to believe that Jake will never act in a comedy again - the script will come and the time will come and it will be amazing.

Regarding whether Jake is funny or not, just watch him on Conan and watch him on Jonathan Ross next week (although I can tell you what isn't funny about Jonathan Ross - trying to get tickets, that's what...). And take a look at him here.

Robert Downey Jr and Jake exchange words

The mutual admiration between Jake and his Zodiac co-star Robert Downey Jr is well known and possibly partly due to them pulling together during the onslaught of take after take by their merciless and obsessive, albeit loved, director. A friend reminded me of their assessment of one another, made when Robert presented Jake with the Young Artist Award for Artistic Excellence at the close of 2006 at the Americans for the Arts’ National Arts Awards. This event was also attended by Lance Armstrong.

Robert said of Jake “He’s just the real deal... What I respect about him is his process. The people that I hang out with, the people that I hang with that I’m close with, the people I respect—sometimes it’s an external thing, but largely it’s his character. Are you living by a set of principles that you really adhere to? And I see him doin’ it, and that’s why I got his back forever.”

And Jake had nothing but affection for Robert in return. “I love Robert.. We worked together on a movie and we became really close after that. It’s very rare that you have an experience like that and you keep a real friendship. When you keep that connection and it means something and it’s deep to you, that’s awesome — and that’s what Robert and I have.” I will even forgive Jake the use of the 'awesome' word because it's in such a wonderful context.

Jake's take on the paps

When The Day After Tomorrow was released, Jake was asked if he was worried about all the attention that this film, and those that followed it, would bring. This is what he said with that wise head of his on young shoulders: "If it were to happen I would have a better perspective on it then, but I know what this is about. I knew what I was getting myself into and if I didn’t, well, I shouldn’t be doing it. And if I’m going to complain about it I shouldn’t be doing it either. I know what it’s about, there’s a part of me, a part of that masochistic side that likes it and then there’s also part of me that doesn’t like it either at times. And there have been a few times recently where it’s gotten into places where if I leave—we talk all day, and then I leave and go home and I need to take my dog for a walk and then there’s these guys taking pictures of me taking my dog for a walk, it was for a little while a time when I could just unwind and now it’s not that same time anymore. But I know what it’s about."

Whoo! That man has both humor and charm. Truly a deadly combination, which drives me (and probably a lot of other people) up the wall. Those pics with Ang Lee always make me crack up. It's like he has this duality going on, where you can always depend on him for a laugh, but you can depend on him for a shoulder to cry on too. He just seems like a really down-to-earth kind of guy. I really want to see that Rendition press conference now.

The picture with Jake up the tree--the first thing that drew my attention (I mean, besides the fact he's up a tree) was the scarf action. I don't think there is anyone who can pull of the scarf look sexier, but then again, there are precious few people who compete with Jake at all in my eyes.

Now, I find it hard to believe that he doesn't do more humor because his family doesn't let him. SNL is probably some kind of outlet for him, I'm guessing.

Oh dear, this part made me frown. Plus it gave me the creeps. I mean, the more I wonder about someone taking pictures of me when I take my dog for a walk, the more disturbed I get. What won't the paps do to get a shot?

Good luck getting tickets to JR, WDW!

Hi Fourplay - I love the pics with Ang Lee! So funny - It's good to see Jake relax to that extent, knowing he's safe with Ang. And I bet Ang had a chuckle when he saw the pictures. I also suspect Jake had quite a headache the next day...

Ahh, Jake and scarves. He is so sexy in a scarf - that scarf that Jake wore in New York in the late winter when doing the interviews for Zodiac. Or when he's all wrapped up to the cold, with a hoody, scarf and hat and ipod.

I think there is more chance of me marrying Jake than there is of getting a ticket for JR - hmmm, I suppose I could live with that... ;D

Handsome, sexy, smart, wisdom-beyond-his-years, down-to-earth, funny, and he can cook too. What more could you ask for? Oh, yes, he's musical too. I adore his humor that we've been so lucky to enjoy lately, a man with a great sense of humor is even more sexy, if that's possible. Rendition will be here soon. :)

I finally picked up a copy of Interview today, and the pictures are as beautiful as I knew they would be. Love the cover.

WDW you can fish up wonderful pictures, and so swiftly. You could probably even marry Jake if you set your mind to it, but I suspect he'd be a handful. Dont

Cant bloggers get press passes to get into things? if not, why not?

Jake's comedic skills: he's got great timing, and instincts: also wit. his interviews once you figure out what he's doing are very funny. he's also extremely perceptive, I imagine a good mimic.
as folks notice from his gaze; he gives good attention. bet he soaks up everything.

I dont think Jake's as bothered by paps as some of us would be. Just sayin'

Hey Postively Pia!

You could probably even marry Jake if you set your mind to it, but I suspect he'd be a handful - I'd put up with him :D

Cant bloggers get press passes to get into things? - I have tried - my new job is as a journalist - maybe I shouldn't have told them that!

Y'know - I reckon Jake is a very good mimic. I think he likes to copy accents etc. He has an ear for humour. I agree with you about Jake's attitude to the paps - they're an unpleasant side-effect of a job he seems to love - we all have them.

Before I comment on tonight's great post,I have to admit to similar demented squealing to Twisted Logic, except I saw most of the "Rendition" trailer earlier this evening on ITV2. I say "most" because I was just coming back from fetching my husband some ice-cream from the freezer and realised what he had on screen! I told him it was his fault I'd missed some of it and he'd sent me for ice-cream on purpose because he resents my Jake-addiction ;-) I did see most of it though and it was fabulous. I felt ridiculously proud that the wider British public have now had a taster of what Jake has to offer in his new film and that should whet their appetites for it and no mistake! Must watch more ITV for the next couple of weeks!

I'm sure Jake himself will seek out another comic role at some stage, partially for light relief from some of the serious, heavy and downright tragic themes in many of his recent films, but also because he obviously loves to make people laugh, which I can certainly relate to. Other people's laughter is a heady drug and Jake certainly seems to amuse, intoxicate and charm the pants off pretty much everyone he works with, from what we've read.
I can't really see his family pressurising him to involve himself only in totally po-faced projects which they see as worthy. They might have serious political and ethical leanings, but to have nurtured a son/brother with such a ready wit and sense of fun, they have to be up for a giggle themselves too and I would think they'd be happy for Jake to express that endearing side of his personality.

I wonder if Jake cringes if he happens to see those photos of him looning around behind Ang at the "Brokeback" dinner. I always react to them with an indulgent smile,it was so funny to see him really let his hair down and lose the plot for once, proves he's human.

I remember Jake saying that, for him, RDJ pees lemonade and the full RDJ "Wet Dark and Wild" assessment of Jake is the stuff of legend. The quotes you have hear, each about the other, are so heart-warming,WDW,and obviously genuinely heart-felt. Such friendships may be rare, forged in the furnace of an intense filming experience, but I hope that Jake has at least one other special friendship, cemented in such circumstances, which has and will pass the test of time ;-)!

I would agree that Jake has acknowledged that he knew what he was getting into with regard to Press attention and Papping etc.,but sometimes the level of intrusion and the aggression inherent in it has to get too much, even for someone brought up in the business. Someone drew my attention to some more Pap video footage earlier today, taken in 2006 in NYC,the cameraman,or should I say assailant, persistently following Jake and his female companion around the streets, waiting for them to come out of buildings, doggedly tailing them for a sustained period and continuing to do so even after Jake had complained that this behaviour really wasn't funny and was driven to grabbing the camera and trying to stop the guy from filming. Undeterred, the creature continued to follow, camera still rolling.

I can't claim that I've never enjoyed looking at Pap shots of Jake in mundane situations if he has looked unperturbed by the presence of the cameras and they are not ostensibly making him uncomfortable or spoiling his enjoyment of whatever he's doing. However, there are always those protagonists who will take things too far,as with the intrusion on Jake and Peter in the restaurant a couple of nights ago, and they really have to be stopped somehow.

Okay,I'll clamber down off my hobby-horse now!

Aagghhh Nadine - I knew I shouldn't have spent part of my evening watching Stephen Fry on BBC2 - I should have been on ITV. So they've shown the advert on ITV2 and 4 now? Just makes me realise - this film is coming - are you ready?! I think this film will be very successful in the UK.

I agree that Jake does like to make people laugh. Jake is a performer and enterainer he's said as much - and part of that is knowing how to make your audience respond to you with laughter. As you say, Jake has a ready wit and I don't think his parents are po-faced enough to want him to ignore this gift.

As for those drunken pics - I'm sorry, but I just love them and (what's worse) I can relate to them!

The pap pic question is a difficult one and I'll admit to being torn - as a fan, and being honest, I will always enjoy seeing pictures of Jake out and about doing things I can relate to. The vast majority of these pictures are a few moments out of a day and I personally have little trouble with them. A few go beyond this - as with these recent pictures of Jake in a restaraunt. I've never liked the idea of Jake being troubled when he's indoors, spending time with a friend - at such times it's not our busines. I have less of a problem when Jake's walking to his car for example.

Great comment - thanks

Wonderful heartwarming feelgood post WDW!!Thank you - I certainly needed it. And thanks for all your comments everyone, what can I say? I agree with you all. I love Jake's sense of humour, I love that he's politically aware but without being preachy, love that he's intelligent and mature and grounded enough to realise that he can't have his cake and eat it where media attention is concerned, love that he's so dignified when the media DO cross the line, love that he can get pissed and make a prat of himself like we all do sometimes, love the way he looks in a cowboy hat (actually, love the way he looks, end of), love his voice, love his eyes...Don't love having to watch him on JR from the comfort of my sofa instead of a TV studio, but I can't blame him for that!
I love that he's led to me meeting so many lovely and like minded people, here and elsewhere :) Sorry to ramble on, I don't know where that came from, but thanks for listening:)

Hi Twisted Logic - if you found tonight's post heartwarming and feelgood then my work is done - I'm so glad :) What a great comment of your's - Jake walks that line so well - aware but not preachy and intelligent but not smug. And I do like it that now and again he can let that fabulous hair down and just get tipsy like the rest of us and have a good night with his friends. I love those photos!

I love that he's led to me meeting so many lovely and like minded people, here and elsewhere - I think above all else we have Jake to thank for this.

That's a perfect note on which to end the day - g'night friends :)

I AGREE TO DISAGREE. HE'S HAD A SAFE CAREER BECAUSE THE CHOICES OTHER PEOPLE HAVE MADE FOR HIM. WHAT'S WRONG WITH EXPRESSING YOURSELF ARTISTICALLY IN WHATEVER ROLE YOUR IN? THOSE ARE THE ROLES THAT PEOPLE REMEMBER. TO PUT YOURSELF OUT THERE NO MATTER THE CONSEQUENCES. TAKE A RISK. HIS LAST 3 MOVIES TANKED: 'ZODIAC', 'PROOF', AND 'RENDITION' (SAW IT AT TIFF).
HE NEEDS TO DO MORE 'JARHEAD' AND BROKEBACK' STUFF, THINGS HE'S REALLY TALENTED AT, NOT SOME MOVIE BECAUSE IT'S POLITICALLY CORRECT, NOT THE SAFE STUFF, THAT'S BORING. IF HE KEEPS GOING AT THIS RATE WE'LL NEVER SEE HIS TRUE TALENT.

Hey Pia! So glad you got a happy ending to your mag saga :)

Night everyone, and thanks again WDW for tonight's post, and all of you for your comments. You've helped stop me from going totally insane tonight!

That article from that woman about Jake being funny was great! We all knew that already but I love hearing more people catch on. ;D I just wish we could get video and/or photos from the press conference! Jake in a comedy would be pure gold. He does need great writers like Woody Allen, The Coen Brothers, people who can do smart comedies.

The mutual admiration comments from RDJ and Jake are always wonderful to read. I hope when the special Zodiac DVD comes out that they did their commentary together. That would be priceless. The only thing missing from Cannes was Jake/RDJ interactions. Maybe they will do a comedy together in the future?!?!

Also, just read on IHJ that Jake will be on Letterman Show on Monday the 15th!! Let the Jake week(s) begin!! :D

I think there are a definite lack of decent comedies about at the moment. The ideal vehicle for JG would be something in the 'High Fidelity' mold; funny, but smart too. In fact, why can't he just have a word with his Godmother's husband, Christopher Guest. He could be potentially fabulous in a 'Best in Show/Mighty Wind/Waiting for Guffmann/Spinal Tap' thingy.

Anonymous said...

Great post, WDW! And wonderful comments, too. BMG, I've thought the same thing about Christopher Guest's casting Jake -- I love Guest's films and I'm certain Jake does, too. I so relate to Waiting for Guffman. Guest makes brilliant fun of human foibles, but in such a loving way -- right up Jake's alley, n'est-ce pas?

I love the description of Jake with David Fincher -- and I could almost see that light bulb lighting up over the writer's head as I read it! I'm thinking she doesn't know much about Jake but will pay more attention from now on.

Hi everyone :) - Wednesday, phew. Thanks for the great comments.

Pia - sounds like you have a fan there :D

Hi Anon - thanks for commenting. I'm always happy to hear another opinion. Like you, I would never want Jake's choices to be dictated to by what is easy or politically correct. However, I would never agree that Zodiac and Rendition 'tanked'. Zodiac may not have been a huge blockbuster in the theatres but there is more to a film than that. I found extraordinary layers of richness in it - and not just in Jake's performance. I could defend that film for hours - unfortunately at work so I can't. I can't wait to see Rendition again as again I thought Jake's performance was extraordinary and different to anything we've seen from him before. I hope you enjoyed TIFF.

Hey Twisted Logic - hope you're feeling a little better today :)

Hi Get Real - it would be an absolute treat of Jake and RDJ recorded their commentary together. Great news about Letterman! Even though he makes Jake nervous.

Hey bmg - I definitely agree that we're overdue a good comedy and how great would it be to see Jake in the comic role of the year.

Thanks Beckela! It certainly seems that Jake's won himself another fan - he just can't help himself :)

Anonymous said...

Hey WDW! Don't worry about me, my inner Ennis has spoken and I've resigned myself to standing what I can't fix ;)

Thanks for letting us know about Letterman, Get Real :) *sending up prayer of hope that someone can put it online*

Sounds like it'll just be a flying visit to the UK then, if Jake's back in the States on the Monday :(
Oh, Jake, won't you staaaaaay, just a little bit longer? ;D

Jake on a tree, hilarious!!:D

And Gavin Hood blushing like a schoolboy at Jake's remark (very much to the point I have to say)...ah priceless!!

I think the blogger lady has a point on Jake ready to do a comedy (can you hear us, Woody?), but we Gillenhaalics know that a lot of Jake's character, even the tracic ones had sense of humour, and that's because of Jake and his ability to make them tridimensional...

RENDITION TAUGHT US NOTHING, BASICALLY IF YOU FIT A CERTAIN PROFILE YOUR FUCKED! WE ALREADY KNOW ABOUT PROFILING AND TORTURES. YOU WANT A MOVIE OF THIS GENRE GO SEE 'THE KINGDOM'. NOW THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT.

Anon 16:17, I am sure there are a lot of people who don't know or know very little about Renditions. Movies like Renditiona are important and make you see what does go on and that is important. It is not an "easy" movie but not every movie should be "easy". Movies, imo, should also make us think and learn and challenge what is happening. JMO.

Hi Anon - I welcome your opinion - but you don't need to shout!

Hi Twisted Logic and Xenia - catch up with you later :)

Hi Get Real - posting at the same time... I definitely agree that not all of us were as familiar with the practice of rendition as we should have been - the film certainly made me find out more. Off commutin' now - at least homeward bound this time...

I have no quarrel with Jake's film choices, although I have with some of the films, themselves. He's moved swiftly, as RDJr commented in GQ interview, and worked with fine directors and experienced actors. He seems to be interested in writng and directing, too. I dont know much about how H'wood careers work but he sure seems to be showcasing himself and what he can do, and, more importantly WANTS a solid career. Hundred percent, sez he.

Ome thing I found esp. interesting in his talk with David Finch was his comment that "some people never grow up." Whom did he have in mind, d'you think?

I'd take 'Rendition' over 'Norbit' any day of the week.

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hello ANON 16.17. It's interesting that you should recommend the Jamie Foxx film in preference to Jake's forthcoming release. I have seen neither "Rendition" or "The Kingdom" yet ( although the former I am to rectify soon!),however I have read various critiques of both films.

While "Rendition" has had the odd less than effusive review, most I've read have been very positive.

However, one of our main film critics here in Britain felt that "The Kingdom" made very little in the way of political statements and proffered little to open our eyes/broaden our minds. He described it as mainly an action movie or "Die Hard in the Desert"

Another British journalist,a hard- nosed war reporter of many years' standing, said she thought "The Kingdom" taught us practically nothing about the current volatile situation in the Middle East, but was just a buddy movie with extra sand.

I'll reserve my judgement until I've seen them both personally, but critical acclaim at least seems to be coming down firmly on the side of "Rendition" as the better film, capable of opening up important debate. We'll see...

One thing I am sure of before I see "Rendition"...Jake will be phenomenal. He has given us so much priceless work already and there is so much more to come.

SORRY ABOUT THE SHOUTING, MY KEYBOARD'S STUCK, WORKING ON IT.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone - thanks for some more great comments and an interesting discusion.

First off - Anon - sorry to hear of your technical troubles, so please shout away :)

Twisted Logic - thanks for this - Oh, Jake, won't you staaaaaay, just a little bit longer? NOT!! I've been humming this bloody song all the way home.... ;)

Hi Positively Pia - I don't know much about how a Hollywood career should proceed either - this being the first and only one I've followed - but it's hard to find fault with it so far. As I've said before, Proof is the only film I generally can't tolerate and even that's started to grow on me a very little bit. I'm not sure where Jake sees his future, and I'm sure he can't yet either at his young age, but I wouldn't be surprised if it involves writing. So long as he doesn't give up the acting, of course....

Heybmg - I've no idea what a Norbit is but I know I'd prefer Rendition ;)

Hey Nadine - I know very little about The Kingdom although I have seen some very mixed reviews and I've not been tempted so far. But I do admire Jamie Foxx. I found Rendition well-rounded and with an interesting, clever twist, giving nothing away. And I liked watching Jake's character work through issues that are never black and white to him.

I have no doubt there is much more to come, a happy thought :D

Hi,

I saw The Kingdom over the weekend, and while there were certain aspects of it I did like, I didn't love it. I think it was a bit too "action movie" for me, although I loved Jamie Foxx in it, and I was very impressed by the performance of the Arab Israeli actor Ashraf Barhoum, who plays Colonel Faris Al Ghazi. I have been wanting to see the film The Syrian Bride which he is in. I liked that they gave the Saudi characters some dimension, and tried to show the effects of the conflict from both sides. I just prefer a story that is more character-driven than action driven.

I'm very much looking forward to all of the upcoming films about the Middle East conflicts. I adore Middle Eastern culture (great food!); my dad is English and Lebanese. Marina is his sister's and my aunt's middle name. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Marina - thanks very much for your review of the Kingdom. Although I like Jamie Foxx very much, I don't feel much temptation to see this film. I'll probably wait for the DVD. I'm interested in the Middle East myself, having spent some time working in Israel and Egypt.

I love the Middle Eastern colours of Rendition.

Anonymous said...

I can hardly wait for Rendtion, I'm with Twisted, if I don't avoid reading pretty much anything too much beyond a brief account or two (except when it's about Jake of course), then I won't be able to stand the wait! I can't wait to see the colors and cinematography. Re The Syrian Bride, I like that it's a collaborative effort between Israeli and Palestinian filmakers!

I also am interested in seeing Jake in an intelligent comedy; I think he'd be great, from what we've seen. I love the Coen Brothers, and Woody Allen. :)
