Jake: 'You look like a nice mint chocolate chip cookie'

Buona mattina! I'm shortly off to the Eternal City which, even if it weren't for Jake and Rendition, would be an amazing thing for me and will take me back to my years as a Roman archaeologist. I'll do all I can to fight the urge, but the odd picture of a ruin may turn up. If Jake should need a guide to the forum...

I couldn't leave without sharing my delight in this new article about Jake in which the interviewer Lisa is subjected to the full onslaught of Gyllencharm, rendering her, no doubt, a Gyllenhaalic for life.

It begins endearingly: “For me, being far away from home is a learning experience,” he explains. “This was shot in North Africa, in a different country with a lot of different rules, and I felt very isolated. It was a very good thing for me. You need to ostracize yourself to learn.”

But then the attack begins...
'“You look like a nice mint chocolate chip cookie,” he suggests in reaction to the mint green blouse and a dark brown skirt I am wearing. “I do?” I ask, blushing and feeling like a 14-year-old. At my advanced age, it really does take a great actor to make me feel that way. “That’s my favorite flavor, so I’ll take that as a compliment,” I offer. ““You should – that’s my favorite flavor too,” he replies.

Now I’m totally flustered. As a mature professional, I like to think I can handle any curve ball that’s thrown my way, but Gyllenhaal is looking at me with his adorable blue eyes and incredibly long eyelashes. “Okay, where do we go from here?” I say, stalling for time while I try to recollect my next question. “Let’s just talk about ice cream,” he offers, oozing boyish charm.

Oh yes, Jake Gyllenhaal has arrived. The man has definitely arrived.'

Israeli actor Yigal Naor has received much praise for Rendition, notably from Jonathan Ross in Film 2007. It is interesting to hear Yigal speak about Jake: “It was beautiful to work with Jake... I’m double his age – I have a son his age - and what really amazed me is his kind of silence, his way of letting things go through him without pushing anything. He goes so deep into himself and has this way of searching for his truth. He’s fighting for every feeling, even the slightest glimpse of the eye. He is a great cinema actor.”

Gavin Hood talks about Rendition and Wolverine

To find out more about the film and what it was like to direct it, you may want to watch this video interview, Secrets Out, with Gavin Hood. In it, he discusses the sheer scale of filming Rendition in locations across the world and with cast and crew from every corner of the planet. He also compares Rendition with his newest and radically different project, the much anticipated Wolverine.

Zodiac Director's Cut

With all the excitement about Rendition, one shouldn't forget that the next Jake offering we'll be getting will be the Director's Cut of Zodiac, due in the American stores on January 8. Variety has pointed out that Paramount is showing its support for David Fincher by delivering the Director's Cut version to 'the Producers Guild of America, the Writers Guild of America and the Screen Actors Guild, instead of the official release version.' This is the first time Paramount has sent out a Director's Cut. The Oscar panellists have been sent the theatrical release as that is the only one permitted.

Work must be almost complete on this new version, because David Fincher is to present it at 'a November 19 event hosted by the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Fincher will be on hand for a discussion at the Walter Reade Theater.'

Hey WDW, Sadly no time to read this latest post now, have to rustle up some "Starburst and Strawberry Stir-fry Surprise" for hubby's lunch when he gets home from work ;-)

However,I just wanted to pop in and say "Fare buon viaggio!" Enjoy Roma, we're all with you in spirit (((WDW)))

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Nadine - I should have internet access - when I can fit it in! Let me know what hubby thinks of the 'Starburst and Strawberry Stir-fry surprise' - if he likes it, I may make it for Mr WDW on my return. I'll stock up on ingredients.

I live the these little gem findings you five us WDW...he's so articulate, and I think he can take the heat in an interview because he gives it right back, takes one to know one.

I was thinking about the GMTV interview and I think he gave it away about he and Reese being an item when he said that he wanted to 'answer questions thruthfully' which implies that if his answer was 'no' that means he would be lying. Just my interpretation.

BTW, I love my new nickname 'CWG' :D

Bon jour and please keep us posted on your travels.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey CWG (glad you like the nickname ;) ) Thanks for the good wishes. I'll be around whenever I can. I expect no sleep Sunday night!

As for Jake's answers, I just think he's so sick of this question, he has 101 ways of dealing with it. I'm not reading anymore into this answer than into any of the others - I think I like the Ellen and moon answers best :)

Have a good Saturday! It's Rendition Weekend!

Hi WDW,

No, we don't mind the occasional pic of ruins - have a great time in Rome!

Mint chocolate chip cookies? My favorite too, and mint chocolate chip ice cream. Cute interview - very few are immune to the Gyllencharm! I liked reading Yigal Naor's comments about working with Jake - Mr. Naor was great in it - there's a scene where he's just staring off, thinking, that really got me. So much conviction. I liked the interview on the previous thread too - he speaks about the subject very well.

Well, I'm off to see Rendition again today with some friends - what a great movie! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Marina - I'm staying very close to the Colisseum so I'm Jakin on Sunday and on Monday immersing myself in culture and wine :D

I think I need to try one of these cookies. I'm not normally a fan of mint and chocolate together, but I can adapt ;) I love how Jake flirts and talks about food at the same time - very sensual.

Yigal Naor was absolutely superb. Enjoy the movie with your friends. Next weekend I'll be doing the same thing!

WDW, the tiredness and sleeplessness I relate to when I was delivering babies for 13 years. Up all hours of the nite, it was a good time. Now I see and treat STD's for a living, those nasty critters, Jack Nasty ;)

Sounds like all the people on this blog are married with kids...love that!!! I love it when I get on the computer and my 4 year old daughter says "Are you looking at Jake Gyllenhaal again". My husband just laughs too, actually I'm lucky because he likes Jake's talent.

twistedlogic said...

Ciao WDw! Thanks for finding the time to post when you're so busy, some great stuuff here (as always).

If a bloke told me I looked like a mint choc chip cookie, I would be like "WTF?!", but the mere thought of Jake saying it would have me falling at his feet...And ice cream! Please don't even mention Jake and ice cream in the same sentence without a warning...*faints*

Great little video with The Wonderful Gavin Hood. The international feel of the film was one of the things I loved about it, the different locations and cultures, even small things like the mentions of London, Spain, Egypt. It made the film seem so "real" and reminds me of what we were saying here recently, about how we're all from different parts of the world and how good it is that we can all connect with each other. And that scene with Alan Arkin and Peter Sarsgaard was one that stood out for me in the film, especially the Amnesty International line.

CWG, I thought the answer Jake truthfully wanted to give the GMTV woman was to f*** off and mind her her own business, but he's far too polite to say that;) But that's just my opinion;) It's incredibly frustrating for me, as a fan, that Jake keeps being asked about his love life instead of the film so I can't imagine how frustrating it must be for Jake. Don't get me wrong, I'm only human and I'm as curious as anyone and I would love to know what's really going on, but my main interest in Jake is his career. He comes all this way to talk about a brilliant clever thought provoking film and we all know that if he was asked about it in depth he would have some really interesting things to say, but these so-called journalists waste the opportunity. Not that I expect any better from the likes of GMTV, but still...I have to say though, I loved how when the woman said that was a brilliant answer, Jake sort of shrugged and looked at her as if to say "Well, I'm a brilliant guy..." Yes, he is, and we love him for it!!

Hope you have a fantastic time in Rome, WDW! I can't wait to hear all about it. And IF you get the chance, please tell Jake how much we love Rendition, I'd love for him to know what an excellent film I think it is.

Hi all,
Not all married anymore, but I can't deny the kiddo. My son is going to lock me away before this is all over.
I'm exhausted. Jaking takes enormous energy. I had to put off Rendition until today. Who knew I would work myself into a Jake frenzy and not be able to sleep or move a muscle for hours. So much new information...so little time. I eagerly await your premiere news, your Jake news and your Rome news.
have fun

Hi TL, your right, it's human nature to want to know these things. I guess I'm curious myself because I wonder who he might wind up with, when your in love you tend to wonder about such things.

Sass, it's called Gyllenfest!! :D

Well, hope WDW is on her way, can't wait to hear about it. I'm also on my way to a party myself. That's the other thing I forgot to mention about myself, other than my family and work I'm a huge fan of parties. I love them all. I might have to navigate to the nearest movie theatre to see Rendition again im my journeys. I think this is becoming a race, who will see Rendition the most...count me in!!!

twistedlogic said...

I have it on good authority that WDW is indeed on her way to Italy and all being well, will report back to us later tonight:)

And Sass, TL Jr would know exactly how your son feels! The other day I was on a train gushing about Jake to WDW on the phone and TL Jr passed me a note asking me to stop cos I was embarrassing her! I always swore I would never be one of those mums that shows their kids up and embarrasses them, but I didn't know about Jake back then!
Speaking of which, have to go and pick TL Jr up now, but I'll be back later;)

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Buona sera,WDW,wherever you are right now,and to all my Gyllen-mates too :-)

That was such a great article,WDW! It's heart-warming to note the obvious affection and respect that their collaboration engendered between Jake and Yigal Naor. Yigal's performance in the film was masterly, skilfully walking the tightrope of playing such a dichotomous character,a ruthless, cruel interrogator while also a family man, capable of great love for his wife and children. The fact that he is such a fine actor makes his glowing assessment of Jake's abilities, almost a fatherly pride in him implicit in his words, all the more thrilling.

I also find it endearing that Jake is willing to embrace living for a time in a very different culture, accepting an unnerving and isolating experience,in order to bring his best to a part and to grow as an individual in the process.

CWG, just to add my status to the blog stats, I'm married,no kids, two cats. I like other people's kids (because they go away ;-) ),but prefer my own "babies" with four legs and fur!

Oh TL,though I sympathise with the poor little soul,I had to laugh about TL Junior passing you that "Stop it Mom!" note on the train. What are we like?! I try to keep the lid on my Jake-addiction with my friends at workmates, but sometimes it just has to bubble to the surface and I get some affectionate stick about it-but,boy is it worth it!

Anyway, that's me for now, folks, see you all later. WDW,ciao bella!

Excellent interview, I thot, anon. Thanks. Felt like Jake was comfortable with the interviewer and responded with honesty. I think he always likes to be in the UK.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Nadine, 4 legs and fur, nothin' wrong with that!!!

twistedlogic said...

Great interview, thanks for the link, Anon:) Jake came across really well. He rarely disappoints anyway but when you take into acccount how tired and jet-lagged he must have been, I'm even more impressed. Of course, he wouldn't have been jetlagged if he just moved to London - come on Jake, you know you want to!;D
It's always nice to hear him talking about past roles like BBM and Jarhead, an he talks very eloquently about Rendition. I loved how he was so self-deprecating about not being able to say "disparity" and for boring the interviewer...well, I don't know about that, but as a reader he never bores ME! And he confirmed that he does indeed have a grey patch on his beard, which for some reason I find extremely sexy;)
And as for saying he doesn't think he's good-looking...Well, he doesn't often say things I don't agree with, but we're never going to agree on that!

sass said...

Hi WDW:)
I saw Rendition earlier this evening, and enjoyed it immensely, if I can use that word. The acting and directing blew me away. I can't understand why so many critics are so negative about this movie; politics maybe, I don't know
I'm OK with negative reviews; I've always trusted my instincts, never the critics. Blade Runner blew me away 25 year ago when most critics hated it, same experience with The Wild Bunch; many critics and people hated it, I didn't.
This movie works for me on all levels; no anvils ruined my experience, thank goodness.
I'll probably see it again, because emotionally, I couldn't take it all in tonight.
I bought a People Magazine, October 29th issue, to read on the train. I opened it up to a large pic of Jake on page 10, outside the Letterman show wearing an Isaia suit--you know I had to Google it--captioned scruffy, shady and chic.
have fun tomorrow,
xoxoxo

I don't mind mixed reviews - you mention Blade Runner, Sass. Saw it again last week, because I heard a terrific director's cut was coming out in December - thought Id check out the theatre version in preparation and was not disappointed. It's a keeper.

That film Blade Runner has had real lasting power and they're coming out with a super enhanced director's cut in December.

^Isn't this like the 27th rerelease of Blade Runner? Great film and great soundtrack, though. I cry every time.

Does anyone get the Telegraph ona Sunday? I'm wondering if there might be pictures to go with it...

Hi WDW,
I know you're having fun! TY for The wonderful news gr77. Maybe Rendition is getting Dixie Chicked by our critics; the movie is superlative in every way.
Below is elementary"gisted" translation via free translation.com

Italian Associated Press Agency) - ROME, 21 OCT - Applauses this morning to the projection for the printing of 'Rendition' presented in the section Premiere to the Party of the Cinema of Rome. The film of Gavin Hood with Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep, talks about the abuses committed across it 'extraordinary rendition' (extraordinary delivery), created during the presidency of Clinton, based on the stopping of alleged terrorists and their deportation in Countries friends where would have been run back also to the torture to obtain information.

WDW, once again, thanks for all the goodies. Don't know where you find all the time, but its much appreciated.

Like some of you have said, of course were all a bit curious regarding Jake's personal life at times.....but, my hope is that interviewers will cut down or stop asking the personal questions to Jake when he's promoting his movies because it seems to be happening more and more today with actors/actresses, that their personal lives or who their dating outshines their career (ex. Brangelina!). I wouldn't want to see that happen to Jake, and I know he wouldn't want that either.

WDW, hope your enjoying Rome and having great amounts of pasta and wine, LOL. Good luck with your Jaking....I expect you will be successful once again!

The Telegraph interview was great, I really enjoyed it....and we even got a mention in it, LOL (*wink*)!

Safe trip back home WDW!

Kidnapping is a big activities of American Turist too. In Guatemala more than 5,000 children are been kidnaped every year and the children are selling for American Turist. The government of Guatemala and USA suport this crime. In Germany and lot of countries is forbidden the adoctions of children from countries like Guatemala!!! Jake Gyllenhaal stop please with your bluffs. Ok! You said in a magazine interview that a paparazzis can run over a child when they are trying to take a photo. It is the control...Your friends of shantytown Hollywood has been run over the paparazzis. The actor Keanu Reeves, Bridney Spears etc... has been run over the paparazzis and Reese Withespoon had been a argument with a paparazzi in a Disney Park and the police find this paparazzi death in a Motel after that...
Lot of actors and actresses must go to the prison because the police by trafic control had been found their blood full with drogs and alcohol or both of those elements.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for the translation, SASS, provided a giggle and also a gladness that the film was well received

Jake always makes the point, correctly (Im sure the cast and all involved with the film really knows their p's and q's when it comes to facts in this matter) that this was begun in the Clinton BUT as the translated article didnt point out, abused in the present administration. not that Clinton admin. wasnt going beyond the pale, and against Geneva Convention, as Jake has said, somewhere -

Poor Jake - because of his charm and presence, he's taken on alot of burden of EXPLAIN THE PHONECALLS I mean the politics.

I think he's done beautifully, but I respect his growing impatience (cf Ellen's show as he says testily, "Ellen, Im wearing an apron. . .") as the Great Explainer.

I always miss him, when he's away. Miss WDW also. (pia howls like a forsaken beagle - I usta have a beagle that howled nonstop when left "alone")

Anonymous said...

p.s. explanation. I didnt mean that Jake stated the Clinton admin. went beyond the pale, but that the Bush administration has.

I assume Jake has to be careful in many respects, since the G's know the Clintons from M.V., and I would guess are supporters, although we havent heard, have we? Tricky!

Anonymous said...

Okay. So someone has sunk to an all-time low. "Gyllenhall"?

http://www.insidebayarea.com/movies/ci_7244071

While I can expect the casual observer to misspell Jake's surname, I find it very, very astonishing that a reporter, no less one that is covering Jake AS THE MAIN FOCUS could possibly produce an article that screams NOT RESEARCHED in the way this one does.

It is not only the main headline misspelled: "Gyllenhall: film shows torture is wrong". I could understand if this was a typo or something...but the error is glaring to any Gyllenhaalic and is REPEATED THROUGHOUT THE ARTICLE...FOUR ENTIRE TIMES (counting the title).

Marta Falconi, AP writer, I highly suggest that you research your material thoroughly before attempting to write another article, lest you be attacked by hordes of fans demanding why you decided to dismiss Jake as someone insignificant enough not to warrant any investigation whatsoever.

Last I heard from WDW she was seeing the sights, but a bit worried about a strike by airport staff :( Hopefully it won't affect her flight. It's obviously a devious plan by the Italian Gyllenhaalics to keep Jake with them a bit longer - who can blame them? ;)

I wouldn't be too concerned about box office numbers. Rendition isn't really a "weekend" type of film, it's not the sort of thing you'd go and see on a date or for a couple of hours of escapism. And I doubt Jake, Gavin Hood, or anyone else involved were thinking of big box office success when they decided to do it.

Anouska, I thought your J.K. Rowling/Jake confusion was funny - and totally understandable:D

Hi everyone! I saw “Rendition” twice this weekend, and throughout the film I was reminded of your posts, WDW, from the TIFF when you talked about a “new Jake.” Oh, how true! We’ve known of his talent for years now, and I’ve watched what I consider to be perfect performances, yet he seems to keep improving. And to borrow Jon Stewart‘s words he brings the hotness. Truly, this is the sexiest man on any screen.

I like what Yigal Naor said about him:
“…and what really amazed me is his kind of silence, his way of letting things go through him without pushing anything. He goes so deep into himself and has this way of searching for his truth. He’s fighting for every feeling, even the slightest glimpse of the eye.”

From the moment he walks into that place, it felt like he was walking into some kind of nightmare. In those scenes with Mr. Naor, I felt Douglas’ disgust and frustration with what he was observing, but then also his shock as he discovers how easily he can fall into that behavior. When he tries to reason with Corinne, tries to make her see the futility of all this and is berated by her, I felt his sense of being completely alone, and that he would have to find his own way out.

I was impressed with the entire cast. It was a great ensemble piece. But I have one small beef - that in one of my favorite scenes, Gavin used a camera shot that is different from the one I saw in a TV spot. (the ad was aired during the Ellen show, so at least I have that particular shot on tape.) What can I say - that scene makes me tingle all over.

Jumping back to the Ellen show for a bit, I realized that after 30 years of cooking, I learned something new from Jake, Mr. “I’m in an apron…let’s do this”.
1. Flip instead of stir - it solves the problem of the spoon falling into the pot.
2. You don’t really ever need Cheez Whiz.
3. When all else fails, grab the wine. But pour it into a glass, not the dish you’re cooking.
4. Starburst is the magic ingredient.

...I never talk about - Him - so anything that sounds like - Him - gives me a start.

anouska, I know what you mean. Skeet Ulrich plays "Jake Green" in one of my favorite shows, "Jericho". And I get a little excited when anyone on the show calls out "Jake!" :)

Cherita said...

I've got one for you. On Saturday I was out shopping for clothes, and this one rack of jeans came in different shades of blue. I felt my face flush as I noticed the tag on the pair in my hands.

"Color: Jake"

No, I didn't buy them. But I was tempted. And in case you're wondering, "Jake" was a light, washed-out denim blue. :)

Anonymous said...

So you were holding "Jake" in your own 2 hands. ;) Mmmm... it sounds like "Jake" would be a good color for Jake. :)

Anonymous said...

thanks for impressions of Rendition, Neely. Unlike some people that like to go into films "cold" I like to enter "prepared" because we miss so much, first viewing. LOL at your comments about Ellen show. Would I love to cook (and drink!) with Jake!

Cherita, if I saw washed out jeans called "Jake" I would buy them even if I dont wear jeans, anymore.

Anonymous said...

Me too, pia. I don't mind spoilers at all. And it is easy to miss a lot the first time on this movie. There's a lot happening.

And I volunteer to unwrap each piece of Starburst if he'll pour the wine. :)

Oh, I wish I could see Rendition again, like, NOW!! I know there's so much I missed that I can't wait to discover and so much that I do remember that I want so much to see again (and no, I don't just mean THAT scene, although I know for a fact I'm going to wear it out on the DVD when it comes out;).
Ths is definitely a new improved (if you can actually improve on perfection) Jake and the fact that we're seeing him in a film that is so good on so many levels just makes it even better.

Totally random thought:I wonder what Jake's favourite flavour Starburst is?

Welcome home (((WDW))) Afraid I've got to hit the hay - see you tomorrow for tales of your very own "Roman Holiday". Sweet dreams all...

TL, I so agree - I love Douglas. I at some point may see it again, and no question about it, I'm getting the DVD. I thought this was a beautiful film, and he is a total knock-out in it, as well as everyone else, his acting as well as "those" scenes. That waking up scene is a work of art, all of the detail and the color, as well as him. I was captivated by the young couple's story too. :)

Can't wait to hear about Rome, WDW!

Hi WDW,
So you are having fun eh? Sounds good to me:)Jake's latest great read I meant to read this book years ago; NYPL here I come:)
I went to see Rendition again Sunday, and was more impressed with it than when I went Saturday. Jake blew my mind...he has grown into a bonafied man up since BBM made... well he was only 23 years old. Good lord..this DOW could hardly stand it:lol:lol. How nice for him to have navigated the teen years and turned into such a gorgeous man in all ways.fans; I'm so proud of him.

Thank you so much friends for not only all your fabulous comments here over the last day or two but also for being with me in spirit on my Roman Holiday. Today was spent trying to be reflective while perusing the colisseum and forum, but I'd forgotten how flippin busy these places are! But the Palatine Hill was quiet and I spent some time up there thinking about it all.

Thanks for the links too - I can't believe that the Telegraph has good things to say about Jake but I'm so glad it has. I've not had chance to read anything yet. I have a huge amount of catching up to do. With no internet access, I felt completely cut off from what was going on but with one crucial wonderful salvo - I knew where Jake was as I could see him.

Good to hear that more of you have been able to see Rendition. I think I persuaded a few people on the plane to see it - I was feeling a little evangelistic, possibly because the flight was so choppy I had to hold on with two hands and Jake was a pleasant distraction!

Sarcastic comments directed against Anouska or anyone else are not something I'll put up with here, particularly anonymous ones.

Thanks to TL and Anouska for keeping you updated with my often quite emotional texts. There's nothing like seeing Jake while in a foreign city, far from home, to put a girl in a hoopla.

So what have I missed?
