Rendition - 'bring plenty of tissues and don't wear mascara'

On This Morning Alison and Jake warned all of us about to see Rendition 'bring plenty of tissues and don't wear mascara.' It may have been said in jest but, believe me, it's good advice. This isn't a review as such, and there are no spoilers, but I had to tell you that I have just returned home from a packed screening of Rendition and I've learned something.

What I've learned is, if you see a film for the first time - say, Rendition - at a Film Festival - Toronto, for example - and you're well aware that its leading man and heartthrob - oh, I don't know, let's throw the name Jake Gyllenhaal in the air - is in the audience with you... the film doesn't really go in. How is a girl to concentrate in such testing circumstances, eh? I know I was deeply affected by it and mesmerised by it and by Jake's performance - I was close to sobbing on a friend's shoulder at one point, simply because I was overcome by how grown up and sexy Gavin Hood was allowing Jake to be. I really appreciated that this was a Jake I hadn't seen before and I was proud of him and his performance shredded me.

BUT, that was not an ordinary experience, it was the culmination of a day of Bountiful Jake, on foreign shores, with dear friends, and in the company (albeit at a distance) of Jake Gyllenhaal, Gavin Hood, Reese Witherspoon, Omar Metwally, Kelly Sane, Peter Sarsgaard and others whom we have to thank for Rendition.

Tonight was altogether different - a provincial cinema on the outskirts of a town - but it was hugely special, because tonight was about the film Rendition. I know so many of you will be joining me on both sides of the pond tomorrow in seeing Rendition, and I would say nothing to spoil it, my intention here is to tell you that you are in for a treat of the highest cinematic order.

The first time I saw Rendition, my eyes and my heart were completely overwhelmed by Jake and, for that reason, I would urge you all to plan a second viewing because it will be different. I saw so much that was new this second time: the colours of Morocco were more vibrant, the music more beguiling, and I could almost smell the Hookah pipes. I appreciated the work of other fine actors: Meryl Streep was absolutely superb - every line was considered, tried for size and then expressed with perfect intention. Omar Metwally, Yigal Naor, Zineb Oukach were mesmerising and oh so complicated. Every character has two sides; nothing could be what they think. The characters played by Reese Witherspoon and Peter Sarsgaard might be existing in the cold, crisp, light blue space of Washington DC but they're lost in their own maze, having to make choices, face truths and balance huge concepts.

And then there's Jake. I have to say that I'm proud of myself for allowing the power and emotion of the storyline to distract from Jake (although there are a couple of scenes where that's simply not possible!). Even so, without doubt, however exceptional the whole cast is in Rendition, this is Jake's film and I have never seen a performance from him like it. Douglas Freeman is an observer but this isn't through choice. This is a terrible thing he's being forced to watch - he doesn't like it, it's unpleasant and it's not giving results. So what should he do about it? The struggle within Douglas is so realistically enacted by Jake, I was moved beyond words by his maturity as an actor and at the depth of feeling conveyed.

I did take Alison and Jake's advice - I took tissues and I wore no mascara. I'm glad for that because I was in tears long before the end. And I'm glad to report that the cinema was packed and appreciative. People quietly applauded and, among the comments, I heard very impressed and moved individuals praise the film. One guy reminded his friend of Jonathan Ross' review and said that JR had been impressed by the risks that Gavin had taken with the structure. The risks, the guy said, went beyond that.

These were serious moviegoers in the audience with me tonight and it was a huge success. As I left, the attendant asked me if I'd liked it. I said (and the red, puffy eyes may have been a give away) it was a great film and he should tell his friends to see it. You should, too. For all those fortunate enough to be able to see Rendition tomorrow, I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to hearing what you think.

I'm proud of you, Jake.

I've been sitting here anticipating your review, not obsessively, although it seems that way to me, and, for the reasons you so brilliantly stated, I will see Rendition again because I felt the movie viewing experience was out of context for sure.

WDW, please watch Ellen, the chemistry was amazing, now these two should hook up for sure. It was by far the best interview, save the best for last I guess.

WDW, you almost have me in tears just reading your post. Definitely no mascara and plenty of tissues for me tomorrow. The next fourteen hours are going to be the longest of my life!!(and this from a woman who spent 36 hours in labour without an epidural!) I'm alreday planning a second viewing but I don't think I'll be able to do that until the week after next (why does half term always have to coincide with a Jake film being released?!) so I really hope it will still be on then.
What a week it's been - my head feels like it's going to explode! But it's been great, not just all the Jake treats we've had, but sharing it all with my fellow Gyllenhaalics:) Thanks so much all of you xx

Oh, and thank you Chillinwitgyllen - in all the excitement I'd forgotten I still have to watch Ellen!! That's how bad it is!

hey CTG (hope you don't mind me calling you that!) - you were at TIFF and so you should see what I mean. Our experience was extraordinary and I find it hard to believe now that I took so little in of the film. I loved it and that hasn't changed but I missed so much. How could we not be distracted knowing Jake is so close - and it'll be the same for me in Rome on Sunday night for sure.

But away from all that, you have to see it again, to appreciate a truly remarkable film. I loved all the performances and yet when Jake was on the screen he took over. The UK reviews have been talkig about the smell of Oscars and I really can't disagree. I thought Jake was incredible in this when I saw it at Toronto but now I know he's way better than that! (I deleted your duplicate post :) )

Oh Twisted Logic - thank you *) I hope your second viewing may be with me and my Bafta sisters...

I've just watched Ellena nd it was magical but for me tonight is about Rendition - tomorrow is about Ellen and all the other bits and pieces from another day in Gyllenweek. I just want to urge everyone to see this incredible film and then to tell me what they think.

What a beautiful tribute to Rendition, WDW. I will be seeing it at least twice. I can hardly wait. Ellen and Jake do have fantastic chemistry, don't they? Thanks for bringing it all to us, guys! :)

I feel a little melancholy because Gyllenweek is coming to a close, but, Rendition will keep the excitement in us all for a little while anyway. Thank you all for being my Gyllenbuddies. It means more that I was able to share it and express it with you all. We not always agreed but we respected each other because we share this one incredible commonality...the beautiful, clever, and brilliantly talented young actor...Jake Gyllenhaal. Chow.

What a beautiful,heart-felt post,WDW!

You know,it's reassuring to me ,TL, that other people are so keyed up about getting to see this film. It has been a long, tantalising wait and I won't be happy now until I'm safely in that cinema tomorrow afternoon and the film has begun to roll. I'm going on my own tomorrow and with a friend next Wednesday, might be tempted to squeeze in at least one more ;-)

At the risk of repeating myself from the previous thread,I also just want to reiterate what a joy and a privelege it has been to share this wonderful Jake-week with all you lovely people here. WDW and TL,you've brought us so many gems, and I'm sure we all adore Jake even more now than we did before. What a bright, funny, sweet, mesmerising and brilliant young man he is!

Thanks Marina - I was going to do a different post tonight but in the end I thought it should be about what it's all been about and that's Rendition.

I've just watched Ellen - OMG. IAt the moment I feel like I need another lifetime to process all these wonders.

Hey Gyllenbuddy CWT - don't be melancholic - it'e been an incredible week and it's brought us all together. And now we can enjoy everyone watching the film together - we've had to wait for this for over a month! Thank you for your wonderful comment :)

Hi Nadine - thank you. This wasn't the post I expected to do tonight but I just didn't want to talk about anything but Rendition.

This week has bought us loser together with Jake and with each other :) What a week!

((((Gyllenhug)))) to everyone here! What an amazing week and WDW your comments on Rendition are wonderfully heartfelt. I too saw it in Toronto but will be seeing it again tomorrow with a real focus on the excellence of the movie. Not with the wonder of Jake et al being in the room.

Anyway, Gyllenweek is not over! We have the movie coming out tomorrow (US & UK) and then the Rome film fest and the interview on The Culture Show on the 27th. Still good stuff ahead! :D

And OMG how adorable and sexy was Jake on Ellen! Cooking away in the apron and being so cute and fun with Ellen, who I also love. So freaking great!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Get Real Thanks for the Gyllenhug - I have a feelingwe're all going to need it after seeing this film. You're another one who was there in Toronto and so I wish you every joy with your viewing tomorrow - it will be different.

And yes, we have so much to look forward too, and Jake was sensational on Ellen! Wow! I'm a useless cook, I need you, Jake :)

II've just watched Ellen (finally!) and all I can say is, if there is a God, why oh why did he or she have to create the perfect man but make it so he'll never be mine?! It's so unfair!!! The cooking bit is one of the sexiest things I've ever seen! Jake knocking back the wine! And he's so masterful(in every sense of the word;) in the kitchen *swoon* And Jake and strawberries...*faints* How much more can a girl take?!
How am I going to survive Rendition tomorrow? Actually, it's officially Friday here now, so...Happy Rendition Day, evryone!

11 and a half hours to go for me, so I'm off now! Speak to you all tomorrow, and thanks again for everything this week, it's been fab and it's not even over yet!

I've been away because I wanted to see these shows before I read any comments about them. I can't thank you enough, WDW and TL, for bringing us all the treats you have over the past week. That Alison Hammond was hilarious, and Jake obviously had a ball with her. I would not have been able to see this wonderful interview if not for you! Your WDWTL Productions have provided an enormous public service. Again, thank you!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Cherita - thank you! And tomorrow morning we have Jake on GMTV before so many of us head out to see the film. And WDWTL Productions thanks you :D

What a beautiful post, WDW. Now I am even more excited about tomorrow. My only plans for the day are to see Rendition as many times as I can. And maybe again on Sunday. Obsessed? Me? Naw!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Beckela well you and me both then :) I have tickets to see Rendition again tomorrow but there is a high probability I'll stay afterwards and see the next showing as well. For me, this just shows, yet again, that it is Jake's films more than anything else that draw me to him. The only thing keeping me from seeing it on Saturday as well is a flight to Rome. I would definitely say see it as much as you can, it deserves it.

I'm so glad you liked the post - I was unsure about it but I was deeply affected by the film.

WDW, as i said earlier, you and I have had similar experience on this third viewing of Rendition. Everything you say is spot on! I just wanted to add something. As I reflected on what was so moving about this film, and so important about it, I realized. As much as Jake has said it was simply to start a discussion about a very complicated, difficult issue, there is very little ambiguity in Rendition. IMHO, Meryl, with all her stature, was perfectly cast in this role. We needed the gravitas of someone with enormous credibility to be able to convincingly convey the rationale for why and how we've come to this point. We needed Peter, too. For me, Peter was Everyman. Peter represented us, or at least many of us.Lots of different agendas. Lots of "masters" to please. Reese and Omar Metwally were important, bcz they put a human face and a very personal human experience on the situation. Their Arab and Israeli counterparts served a similar function. "Mr. Fawal" was the point of intersection for me. He was Reese and Omar, he was Meryl and Peter, and finally he was Douglas, all wrapped in one person. That nexus where public policy meets the personal. A year ago or more, I saw Tsotsi. One thing that struck me about Gavin Hood's characters is that finally, ultimately, their humanity struggles forth. It is imperfect. It is often in tatters. But eventually it emerges and people, often thru impulse more than design, eventually do the right thing. So yes. Jake's character struggles. He's someone who's very disconnected. Someone who's sort of phoning his life in. He is disgusted, I think, before the prisoner is even delivered for questioning. The scene in the car, when he is riding with his new station chief, I got a feeling that he was somehow disgusted with the inefficiency, the chaos, the confusion.Jake's analyst feels most comfortable with his "peers," the high government ministers, well educated, in fine homes, that he can discuss theory, concepts, "pie charts," Shakespeare, if you will.
The nitty gritty of dealing with the Mr. Fawals of this world are terribly distastful to him. Because they are inefficient. They don't work. They are mundane and not "bigger picture" enough for Douglas Freeman. And I thought that day after day, as he stood there, we saw the process happening, right there in his eyes, his face, his body language.
I think he realized at some point that this was him. This was who he is. I think he felt filthy. So, while yes, it was about whether something worked or it didn't, I think it was also about, "Is this who I am?" I couldn't help my tears. It is really a remarkable film and WDW, you're right. People will have to see it more than once.
Because, in a way, "Donnie Darko" has left the building.

Bobbyanna - I'm so glad I caugt your post before I turned in and it's extremely late here so please forgive tired typos. It's an important point that Meryl is Washington.

I'll be back in the morning when my body is functioning again!

Wow. I really, really loved your post WDW. I just can't wait to get to the cinema today. I'm just killing time, clock watching until I get there. Just reading that report and seeing Jake say, don't wear mascara...well, I'll be crying all the way to the cinema! And that's without a clue what's going to happen in the film! I have managed to get this close and not know. These last few hours before I see it are the worst!

I just can't wait to see Jake's performance either. Being as biased as it is possible to be, I ALWAYS think Jake should win an Oscar for his roles. But I'd love to think he may really do so with this.

It's clear how much you loved the film, and you wrote a very powerful and emotional report and I thank you for it!

And thank you so much to TL, without her I wouldn't have seen This Morning in real time...she is an angel! Mind you, I can't count the times I've seen it since, thanks again to you and TL!!!

Ellen was superb, that man in the kitchen does things to me...well who am I kidding?...That man does things to me FULL STOP.

I'm on emotional overload..from this week, and I haven't even got to the cinema yet!!

Anyway, I don't know what I'm talking about here..I'm just too excited to think, so I'll just say Thank you again!

Good Morning everyone!! Today's the day we've all been waiting for!
I can't believe I'm going to be seeing Rendition in less than 3 hours!!! Well, I'll probably be sitting there silently screaming for them to finish showing the trailers and get on with it!!! At least I hope I'm screaming silently!
I'm SO excited!!

Good morning and Happy Rendition Day! I actually have a Rendition hangover this morning so I'm having to write quietly.

Rosie - I'm so pleased yo liked the post; it was very emotional for me seeing Rendition again and I was so overjoyed that it was even better than I remembered it. And how much did I love the Ellen show....

Morning Twisted Logic! Not long now. I'm seeing it again this afternoon. Can't wait. I can even take back my popcorn from last night, I was so caught up in the film I forgot to eat it.

A great review WDW, I can't wait to watch this movie with you and, gees a I can't believe it, in Jake presence...

twistedlogic said...

Ok, I'm off now to redline it all the way to the cinema!! got my tissues (no mascara!) and I probably should chuck in smelling salts, an oxygen mask and a defibriwotsit just in case! I'll be back later to talk Rendition:) well, hopefully...If you hear any news reports about a woman being forcibly removed from a South London cinema and taken to a secure unit whilst sobbing and rambling incoherently about someone called Jake, that'll be me!
Hope you all enjoy Rendition whenever and wherever you are!xx

Thanks Xenia I hear that Jake is flying into Rome tomorrow :D

Twisted Logic - I know you're just going into the cinema right now - thinking of you and let us know what you think.
