Rendition - a tremendous piece of drama - complicated, compelling and stylish

Jonathan Ross, arguably Britain's most influential film critic, tonight delivered his opinion of Rendition in the UK's premiere film review programme, Film 2007, and it was superlative. Thanks once again to the wonderful Twisted Logic - here is the review and interview with Jake.

There are several films being released this Autumn and Winter on the War on Terror and the war in Iraq and Jonathan Ross would love them to have 'half of [Rendition's] urgency and quality'.

'It sets out to do a difficult job and does it spectacularly well'.

'Complicated issues are dealt with in a way that doesn't duck their complexity.'

A 'gripping drama'.

'The subtle, effective work of Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon suggests they're both maturing into major figures in modern American film.'

'Meryl Streep is predictably brilliant.'

Of Yigal Naor - 'I found myself knocked sideways.' This was 'one of many sources of satisfaction.'

'It's just a very complicated, compelling and stylish film - a tremendous piece of drama, which takes exciting risks with its structure and never loses sight of the big question it's raising.'

Film 2007 included a brief interview with Jake

Jake: 'It's more important that a discussion is started than that there's an opinion.'

Jake: 'Politics don't really move my heart. Movies are the opportunity to sit in the dark and explore things that you wouldn't normally explore.'

Jake: 'This has a message that I believe needs to be out there along with a human story.'

So great and so important to have this review from Film 2007 - this undoubtedly will put bums on seats. Three days to go and I for one can hardly wait.

Pictures from IHJ. This is the second post tonight - please don't forget to look at the last post for a very entertaining radio interview broadcast today in the UK.

Thanks as always for your tireless coverage, WDW. I know that Roger Ebert has already praised the film, too, and he's probably our most influential popular movie critic. My thoughts on how this film will do at the box office may need revision, as it seems there's quite a mixture of opinion now.

Here's hoping Conan O'Brien does his job properly tonight!

NYT and New Yorker applauded Zodiac altho it did not do well in theatres. I am so glad to hear of JR's review - I go to sleep dreaming of sugarplums....hahaha!
right. (giggle giggle Im no better than that slut Meredith whatshername.)

Thanks for staying up for loverly second post, WDW!

Just to let you know, I'm working on uploading the video. Unfortunately my computer and YouTube are struggling to cope with all the Jakeness, but we're working on it!

Hi Cherita - this film review really counts and will have a lot of influence here - be printed on adverts in newspapers etc, as well as on the DVD later on, so it will counteract a million useless News of the World so called reviews. It's interesting that our principle critics are praising the film so strongly and that may be what counts for much of the potential audience.

I hope Conan's good tonight :)

Hi Purring Pia - it was well worth staying up for this! This is a very important step in Rendition's release, at least in the UK.

Twisted Logic - thanks so, so much for your valiant efforts. I know you're having a lot of techno troubles this evening - it can all be sorted tomorrow *) I'll add the link then. I appreciate it (great blogger pic - sigh)

Glad you like the pic btw, I've got about 6 different versions and don't know which to choose!

Thanks Pia!! Sorry about your speakers- the side effects of Gyllenhaalism can be intense!

Just noticed Pia posted at the same time too- Spooky Triplets!

Just watched the video for the first time, sorry about the dodgy editing, I didn't have a chance to play it back before uploading:(
Never mind, great review (good to see JR really wasn't lying ;). Can't wait to see it on Friday!
Night everyone xx

ooh, Twisted Logic is looking good! Thanks TL and WDW for the video. Another late night for you guys?!

Saw it last night with a real people audience at one of those sneak previews locally. The audience was very absorbed. When it was over, most people still sat, watching the credits role. There was a smattering of spontaneous applause. As we left I heard a man say he was glad someone finally had the guts to show what was going on. I live in a very conservative community. Theater was about 80% full.I think it will do OK at the box office. It will proabaly be in theaters for about two weeks. (Three weekends.) It will probably do better in Europe. This film is leagues ahead of Tsotsi. Clearly had a bigger budget to work with, better production values.

Wow, I'm getting a real appreciation for Jonathan Ross! :)

Beautiful, beautiful interview on The Today Show with Jake this morning, I thought (well, except for Meredith's little misstep) - Jake was in top form. I liked that he was outside, talking and being his warm, natural self with fans. He seemed really bright and fresh, looked incredible, was intelligent and articulate when discussing the film. This is the Jake I admire so much - natural and real. Not to mention being a Sox fan; and a supersitious one at that, which is the mark of a true fan. ;)

I haven't watched Regis & Kelly yet, but I will next, and on to Conan! :)

More clips! Thanks so much WDW and TL for the Film 2007 and the Heart Breakfast clips! I'm still giggling at Harriet ("have you got money? That's fantastic! I've never had a boyfriend with money before!") and Jamie and Jake.

You're off to Rome next? Your Frequent Jake Miles are really adding up. :D I'm so jealous, but happy for you, too. Safe travels. Get a sniff of Mr. Oscar Fever if you can. ;)

Anonymous said...

I forgot to add, how wonderful that you are going to Rome, WDW! Yes, I'm envious! ;)

Gah, that Today Show interview was like a breath of fresh air, very refreshing, and he handled Meredith's misstep the questions unrelated to the film with aplomb! And did I mention his beautiful voice? :)

The JR review was spectacular, WDW! I'm so anxious to see Conan that I had to catch Jon Stewart interviewing Meryl Streep and then Jay Leno with Reese. Both ladies looked really good. Jon said he liked Meryl, not only bcz she's a great actor, but bcz of the "hotness!" She loved that. They had fun. Reese looked very good. She couldn't stay long, spent her time talking about her kids and Halloween. She also mentioned spending time "back east" at a county fair where the kids saw a pig race this past summer...she expressed fondness for pigs and said she wanted one.LOL!!! They talked about Rendition and showed her clip with Meryl Streep. Jay said he'd seen it and it was very good. Then she left. She was very bubbly and vivacious and bouncy. Seemed to like the music, too. Now I wait for Conan....don't have any gadgets or know enuf about techno stuff to record and upload anything. According to Reese's website she is also scheduled for the film festival in Rome. I think Gavin, etc. are pulling out all the stops to really promote this film, and I am glad for that.

I'll be interested in the Kermode interview on Friday. He's usually on the money. Though, to be honest, it could be trashed by every single paper and I'd still want to see it.

I do hope they are paying him more to be handling 95% of the promotion for this film. Streep did the Daily Show, lil Miss Pointy Chin did a show, and Jake is touring the world!

sass said...

Hi WDW,
So Jonathan Ross is your Ebert; that's exciting news, because he and Ebert gave Rendition rave reviews. I pay attention to Ebert's thumbs up recommendations, because I usually leave the theater, having had a a positive experience. Movies cost way too much money, and I can't afford to waste my time or my money on a bad flick.
Conan was fun and rushed for some reason, but Jake was relaxed and congenial. He was not as animated tonight, as he was when he was promoting Zodiac. He did tell a really funny tale about his favorite baseball team, The Boston Red Sox and his usually imperturbable friend's excitement, when he thought he might catch a baseball, which he desperately wanted to do, since he had bought his personal mitt to the game.
Hey Jake, you and your family visit and live in Yankee country!
Bah humbug:)
Again thanks, you've made this a wonderful Jaking week:)

Morning everyone! The sun's out over London, there's a big footie match on this afternoon, it's my last day at work before a week off and it's Jake Week!

Thanks for some great comments last night. I am so excited about JR's superb review of Rendition. Twisted Logic - thank you for your huge effort last night *)

Hey Ruby Good to see you and hope you're having a good time :)

Anon - thanks for your account of seeing the film. I'm glad the audience appreciated it. I'm seeing it tomorrow so I'll be intrested to see how it fares.

Hi Marina - I got to see The Today Show interview this morning and I really enjoyed it - Jake's looking good with the trimmed beard (and hair?). And yes he declared his Sox status so no doubt now. I wonder if we'll see the Yankees cap again.

Thanks Neely :)

Bobbyanna - I appreciate your account of Meryl and Reese's appearances. I'd have been interested in seeing them.

Hi bmg - Jake is definitely the big attraction for this whole promotion :D

Sass - I got your message this time, thanks :)

Thanks Marina - looking forward to seeing that as soon as I get home!

Just heard from TL that Jake is on GMTV on Friday morning too :)

twistedlogic said...

Thanks for the tip off, Anon! Hopefully WDWTL productions will be able to bring it to you quicker than Film 2007 last night!
Btw, JR also reviewed a film called Stardust last night which his wife wrote the screenplay for, and while he gave it a good review, it wasn't as good as the review he gave Rendition, he even said Stardust's script was too long, so he's nothing if not honest.

Sorry you're all finding my avatar so distracting- maybe this new one will be better;)

Forgot to ask, is anyone else having problems with the downloadable version of the Heart interview? I can only get it to play at high speed, but I don't know if it's my computer freaking out with Jake overload!

chillinwitgyllen said...

Hi WDW, what is GMTV? Channel? TL, I was able to download the first link to the Heart interview but the others didn't work.

Conan was awesome. Jake was his usual Gyllenfunnyguy, and that singing!!

I feel like I could have made more of an effort to actually see Jake live somewhere since we are both eastcoasters for now but I didn't, kinda bummed about it. Maybe next time. I might have to make a trip or two to Boston ;)

Iggy said...

Thanks to TL and WDW!! I loved Jonathans review of Rendition and the Heart interview....*DED*!!

twistedlogic said...

Hey Chillinwitgyllen (love your name, btw!) GMTV is the morning programme on ITV here in the UK.

That's strange about the Heart link, you're in the US aren't you? I thought the first link didn't work outside the UK *confused* Oh well, at least I got to hear it last night which is more than I would have done if it hadn't been for WDW. I can't thank you enough for that, it was brilliant!

Anonymous said...

WDW, I have no idea which thread I'm on 'cos of the embarrassment of riches you keep posting :) BUT did you mention GMT? O. M. G. is he being interviewed by Lorraine Kelly (PLEEEEESE!) What a busy boy he must have been on Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks for the Heart interview, it was very funny (it read funnily anyway, I'm still too tech-poor to hear it).

*WAVES WILDLY AT RUBY*

chillinwitgyllen said...

TL, thanks for the reply. That first link was the only one that worked for me, guess I was lucky. My name stems from the feeling I get when I'm either thinking about or watching Jake...chillin ;) Sort of the same feeling when I'm with my kids(boy 6 yrs old and girl 4). Lucky you over there in the UK...going Jake shopping are you? Yes, I am in the US, upstate NY. I tried to leave a profile about me but it didn't work.

Anonymous said...

^ that was "poxy internet cafes" by the way :)

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW, I didn't realize on that Heart interview until I heard it that one of the interviewers was a guy, it's deceiving when i was reading it, sounded like two girls instead, makes a big difference when you hear it.

Anonymous said...

Gosh you lot have been busy! As I said before I crashed out last night, Jonathan Ross has redeemed himself completely with that glowing review of "Rendition"(it's nearly Friday - hurrah!)I'm sure you're right,WDW,JR's seal of approval will boost the Box Office yet more, won't it?!!

I came here all excited (well that's my normal state when I come here for the latest Jake-gems from WDW,but even more so...)'cos I'd just had daytime TV on to anaesthetise me while I ran round doing some token house-work and I heard a trailer saying that Jake is on "This Morning" tomorrow. Couldn't wait to get here to tell you all and I've been beaten to the punch!

No matter, the important thing is there'll be even more of His Gorgeousness than expected, plus I also learn here that he'll be on GMTV too.(Excuse me while I do a virtual back-flip of delight!).

I'm relying on you,WDW,because I've got appointments in the morning and can't be sure of being back for Jake on Phil and Fern and I'll be at work by the time he's on GMTV on Friday. I know you won't let us down!! :-)

The "This Morning" interview could either be very funny, extremely cringeworthy or both, because Alison Hammond, the interviewer,is a very loud, larger than life, brash, broad Brummie (from Birmingham, for our overseas mates) who often flirts outrageously with her male film star guests and has been known to lunge at them for a kiss, nearly suffocating them with her ample air-bags(I'm only jealous!). Could be a hoot!

All this Jake-ness has me high as a kite! WDW, have I ever told you that I love you??!!

Anonymous said...

Hey Anouska! Sorry to disappoint, but I don't think it'll be Lorraine Kelly, it's part of a segment called Entertainment Today with Jenni Falconer and Ben Shephard (whoever they might be!). It'll probably be a pre-recorded thing like the Sky and Film 2007 interviews. I'll try to upload it as soon as I can, but I have a date at the cinema on Friday morning;)

Chillinwitgyllen, yes Jamie Theakston is a bloke - and a pretty hot one too! Not in Jake's obviously, but the thought of the two of them in a studio together is...nice;) Lucky Harriet!

twistedlogic said...

^ Oops! that should say "not in Jake's LEAGUE" Stupid blogger wouldn't let me sign in so I had to re-type in a hurry!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone! I'm back from work and now I have one full week of nothing but intense Jaking ahaed of me - yaahooo! With a little trip to Rome squeezed in the middle, and a quick whisk round the Colisseum. Plus a whole stack of Renditioning begining with the Preview tomorrow night.

I was thrilled to hear there are more Jake appearances on UK TV as well as the US TV shows. There is so much going on each day - makes Zodiac feel like a stroll on a moonlit beach by comparison. I listened to the Heart interview on the way home today and just laughed and laughed at it and with Jake, Jamie and Harriet. I love it. I'm downloading Conan as I speak so I can watch that at last.

Thanks everyone for your comments and for all the excitment :D

Twisted Logic - I don't think that avatar's any better, just as distracting.... Sorry about your troubles with the Heart file, I just don't get it as it's working fine for me. I've given the file to IHJ and I think they're going to add it to the site soon.

Hi Chillinwitgyllen sory about the name thing - Jamie Theakston is so well known over here I just forgot that many people wouldn't have a clue who he is. Was it Joely Richardson he used to date?

Hey Nadine - glad you've got your ears open for any TV announcement! Fortuitous indeed that I have tomorrow off. I'm hoping Alison Hammond isn't the Alison Hammond I think she may be - tell me you don't mean the Brummie Big Brother girl.... If she is, OMG, Jake, I'm thinking of you (well actually I'm always thinking of you but maybe crossing some fingers for your safety).

Nadine thanks for the lovin *)Hey

Hey TL - My cinema has put its schedule up now and there are no shows in the morning, all well into the afternoon and later. I was all set to be there at 10 or 11 on Friday morning!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hey WDW,you must be so de-mob happy! A great feeling at any time, but with the week you've got planned you must be just totally yampy with excitement (yampy = a Midland expression for off your head!).

Yes,it was Joely Richardson who was once Jamie Theakston's significant other. Even more worrying is yes,I do mean Alison Hammond the Brummie ex-Big Brother housemate, whose heart seems to be in the right place but God she's OTT and in your face (with those babies, from about six feet away she's STILL in your face!).

As the interview was obviously pre-recorded during Jake's recent lightning visit to London he evidently survived the experience, but I shall be looking for signs of delayed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in his forthcoming TV appearances. I shall make myself available should he need counselling. I must tell him about this new Hugging therapy which is apparently all the rage for PTSD ;-) I'm something of an expert...

chillinwitgyllen said...

I know how Jake feels because when I was between jobs and didn't work for 3 months I went 'crazy'. This was before kids, now that I have kids it's a different story.

Anonymous said...

"...but I shall be looking for signs of delayed Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in his forthcoming TV appearances".

Hi Nadine, funny you should mention this. I was just going to post that I noticed Jake's beard has a small white patch on the right side, just down from his mouth. Am I seeing things? I never noticed this before, but I saw it first on Letterman's show, then on Conan's.

That hugging therapy sounds like a great idea! In fact, we should all take rotating shifts, so his entire beard doesn't turn white. ;)

twistedlogic said...

Twisted Logic - I don't think that avatar's any better, just as distracting....

Oh FGS!! Ok, you can't even see Jake's face now, so I'm sure this won't distract anyone;D

I'll try IHJ later for that link:) Although I'm having the same problem with the download from the Heart site and the link you posted, so it must be my computer, but all my other files are fine *confused* At least I can still read the transcript and it brings it all back, so thank you for doing that:)

Glad you got home ok, enjoy your Jake Week!

Nadine, I remember Alison Hammond launching herself at Orlando Bloom when she interviwed him, so I dread to think what she'll try to do to our Jake!! I'm sure he'll handle it in his usual charming way though!

Off to watch Conan now, and see if I can spot the white patch Neely mentioned. I have to say I do like a bit of grey hair on a man (i never fancied Clooney until he started going grey) so if I see any on Jake I might faint!

I would like to say that the CIA only isn't kidnaping in USA but all over the world. The situation of CIA wasn't good when they kidnaped a German Citzen whose belongs a immigrat family in Germany. You can see in youtube: CIA tortured a german citizen-the story of Khaled El-Masri or Aclu client Khaled El-Masri-victim of C.I.A. Rendition.
They kidnaped this men when he take a plane for Pakistan, then CIA sent him to Alfganistan. When the the sadistic men of CIA notice that El-Masri isn't a terrorist and they sent him to Albania...There is a modern agent 007 only in films!!! For USA realize the "Barbarrosa Operation" is very late to invide Russia through Iran! The president of Russia had a meting with president of Iran and will help more in atomic program of this country. The president of France will help in atomic program from Libia and the dictator Kadafi!!!

Hey Nadine! Yep, I'm yampy all right. I'm late on here tonight - I got way too distracted with Conan and playing it down the phone to Anouska!

That's bad news indeed about Alison hammond - it's a good job jake responds so well to the Gyllenhug Therapy.

Hi Chillinwitgyllen - I'm no good not working either, however much I might moan about it. I can see that six months is about all Jake could tolerate. Let's hope he makes up for it with a succession of films :D What a great singing voice!

Twisted Logic - I dont think reminding us of SNIT will be less of a distraction - it also reminds me of that mole on Jake's back which I couldn't see during Jarhead - hmmm. So no, that one's no good either ;)

I'll save the Heart interview onto a disc for you :)

I've been aware of the grey patch for quite some time. When you see Jake there's quite a few flecks of grey in his beard and I think it looks so good.

Thans Anon for the lovely big pics of Jake. I loved his trimmed beard on the latest shows and his hair looks so good too. Sigh!

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! I can see I'm going to have to go through every single Jake pic on my computer until I find one that's suitable! There's no moles here, so will this do? I've always wondered about that mark on his back in SNIT. I think it's more like a bruise or a carpet burn, which would explain why you can't see it in Jarhead.

That would be great if you could put that on a disc for me, thank you so much!:D

Conan was fantastic, WDW. Thanks for that.

As well as the Colosseum, don't forget the Pantheon and the Forum.
