Jake: 'I'm a bit of a sarong boy'

While Jake and Reese enjoy themselves sampling the food and drink of California's beautiful Napa Valley, one of WDW's favourite places, we get the chance to take a breather and hark back to Jake of days gone old. In the days before Jake made Brokeback Mountain, when many regarded him as the Indie It Boy and were fascinated by his ability to be both cute and 'weird' at the same time, Jake displayed his continuing knack to say things that intrigued and amused interviewer and reader alike. So here are a few glimpses of Jake from the past.

In the summer of 2004, Minneapolis' Star Tribune stirred up their readers with the promise of a visit by Jake: 'Be on the lookout for a possible Jake Gyllenhaal sighting. In an interview Monday on FOX9, "The Day After Tomorrow" star said a trip to visit relatives may bring him here. If he brings along Spider-Man's girlfriend, Kirsten Dunst, who is dating Gyllenhaal in real life, and his sister, actor Maggie Gyllenhaal, we could end up being Hollywood-Midwest for a few days. "I'm hopefully going to come out and see my uncle [Anders Gyllenhaal, Star Tribune editor] and his family," Gyllenhaal told Buzz Boy Jason Matheson.

'It would be Gyllenhaal's first trip to the Twin Cities. Dunst knows her way around, having filmed "Drop Dead Gorgeous" here. Buzz encouraged Gyllenhaal to call the local gossip columnist when he comes here. "I'll make sure to do that," Gyllenhaal said, unconvincingly. When there were audio difficulties at the start of the satellite interview, Gyllenhaal pantomimed, "Good morning, Minneapolis!" and displayed some of that self-effacing charm that has made him the darling of indies. Instead of Buzz, Gyllenhaal was hearing sound from a talk show. "What is this, Maury Povich?" he asked. This Gyllenhaal has a well-defined personality. For example, when responding to questions about his Oprah-size noggin, he said there's been a lot of misunderstanding on this matter. "It's not that it's a big head. It's just that it's an abnormally sized head. Hard to fit a hat around. If you asked my uncle, I'm sure it runs in the family. We should get some disability for it."'

In May 2004, Jake elaborated to the Scottish Daily Record on the famous anecdote of being taught to drive by Paul Newman: 'well, yes. I went to the track with him and he took me out in a race car. He taught me the things that could go wrong. When I eventually got my licence, he was at our house cooking steaks and had a knife in his hand. When I came in, he made me go down on one knee, knighted me and gave me my licence.'

Let's finish with a happy thought - in 2004 Jake was quoted in the UK's Sunday Mail as saying: 'I'm a bit of a sarong boy. I wear them at home all through the summer and I go commando shocking, isn't it?'

Oh God. I wanted to write a long quote...but I can't. The last Jake comment has rendered me speechless...

Shocked!!!!!!!!! Jesus!! Just call me an ambulance....that image has done me in.

Hey WDW! I love this post, it's hilarious! It's really given me some much needed laughs:D Thank you:)

Jake saying he should get disability allowance for his big head!! Personally I don't think it's that big, it looks fine to me, but what do I know? Actualy I should know something about it, given the amount of time I spend looking at pics of Jake's head (and other body parts) but anyway, that made me lol!
And the image of Paul Newman knighting Jake with a steak knife is hysterical!!
Not sure what to make of the thought of Jake doing a Beckham with the sarong - it wouldn't be my first choice if I could dress him up for the day;) No problem with him going commando though!:O

Hi Rosie - It's quite an image, isn't it (particularly in a draft ;))

Hey TL Thanks! I'm glad Jake's given yu a laugh tonight :D I agree that Jake's head looks perfectly proportioned to me and it couldn't be oo small, there are a lot of brains to cram in. Reminds me of that interview where he went on about the embarrassment of the 'special' Jack Twist hats that were made for him because his head was too big.

I love the idea of a 'Dress Jake for the Day' game!! We should have a go - I reckon I'd be very boring and say jeans, white t-shirt, clean shaven (or a day or two's scruff), boots and a wide stride.

A sarong wouldn't be my first choice either for going out, but if we'e just knocking around the house then it sounds fine :D And yes, commando's OK!

O my! Jake seems to have grown into perfect preportions - perhaps all his worry about eyes, nose, ears and big head have helped to keep him from getting a really big head hahaha!

Why is he so much fun and so gorgeous at the same time? He deserves a bio and WDW you deseve to be his biographer, for sure!

Jake in a sarong is frankly my idea of heaven. (I hope he does not "mature" out of his wickeness)

O by the way I listened to yesterday's video with earphones and indeed the b.g. is Mister/Officer Gay or Gaye. Sorry to have misled anyone on this.

It's a game? I'll take him barefoot and commando in a sarong and in the kitchen.

First of all,WDW,I must say thank you to you and to everyone else who has made me feel so welcome back here...and with lovely,up-beat posts like this one it's an absolute treat to BE back.

I loved Jake's clarification of the Paul-Newman-as-driving-instructor legend, giggled at his "Big-head Benefit" suggestion, and the picture at the basketball game is a scream, it looks like a very animated Kirsten is at a different game to Jake and all the blokes in the picture, who all look somewhat torpid and trance-like ;-)

Then there's the sarong quote! Jake has many cool assets and it would seem that he wants to keep them that way. And as TL mentioned,if it's good enough for David Beckham...(look out for some underwear adds featuring DB looking well fit!). Have to admit,I'd prefer Jake in jeans and a white vest/t-shirt too,but to quote that old song,Jake "If loving you is sarong,I don't want to be right..." (Ow,ooch, stop throwing things.....

"Dress Jake For The Day" sounds like a brilliant game! I can't argue with your choice WDW, although I would swap the t-shirt for the blue shirt he wears sometimes (top few buttons undone of course;). But he can wear more than one outfit per day, can't he? So he's start the day off naked, wear the sarong while cooking breakfast, change into the jeans and blue shirt for a quick round of shopping and lunch before changing into an Arsenal shirt to go and watch the match (love the pic of Jake with Celebrity Gooner Michael Moore btw!). Then back home to change into a dark suit with a light blue or grey shirt (no tie!) to go out and celebrate Arsenal's victory before finally heading home for the night and changing into either Jack Twist's outfit from the opening scene in BBM or a fireman's uniform (I can't decide on that one)Er...excuse me, I need to lie down!

OMG TL, may I join you in your fantsy life?

Nadine, always LOVE to hear from you! You're a hot ticket!

Great post, WDW... so much fun to read :)

Didn't Jake mention in Letterman that his father was going commando when they escaped the fire last xmas?

maybe it runs in the family... :P

twistedlogic said...

Hey Pia! I think our fantasy lives with Jake already cross over as you posted about him "barefoot and commando in a sarong and in the kitchen" as I was typing my comment:D

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Awww (((Pia))), you too. Big kiss... Mwwwaaaahhh!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Positively Pia! And there was Jake saying he didn't feel like he was good looking, that he feels he looks like a tube of toothpaste with bad eyesight - and yet he's breathtaking. Definitely no big head on our Jake.

Great to see you Nadine That's actually one of my favourite pictures of Jake and Kirsten. I love to see them animated like that. It doesn't look like things are going too well with the game :) OMG - and awards for some of the worst Jake jokes I've ever heard :D

Oh TL - what a comment! I love how you have Jake's wardrobe mapped out - have you been thinking about this perchance? Loving the blue shirt idea too. Interesting how Jake is such an ARsenal fan - I never knew that about him (does he know, by the way?)

Hi Winterbird - the Gyllenhaals are clearly expressive and confident :D

Loving the comments :D

I do worry a bit though... this "sarong" thing has been tinted by David Beckham-does-that-too!

too metrosexual male? LOL....

but then, who's gonna complain when jake wants to go commando?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Dare I say that I quite liked Becks in the sarong.... * runs from comments *

chillinwitgyllen said...

Hey WDW, thanks for that lovely imagine of Jake going commando in a sarong, made my nite.

He must have been reading your posts about loving California wines and decided to go their in honor of you. I've decided to drink some wine myself to help celebrate our boy in wine country.
That link of the place looks amazing, might have to go visit there someday.

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! I doubt Jake has even heard of Arsenal, let alone being a fan, but he is in my dreams! Don't take that one away from me, please!!

As for Becks in a sarong, I've never understood the appeal of David Beckham- and Lord knows TL Jr's spent enough time trying to convince me! (even if she has moved on to Steven Gerrard now) But if you rephrase your comment to "Jake drinking Becks beer in a sarong" then I can happily live with that;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey CWG - I've had a glass from that region tonight too :)

TL - that's a much better idea, Jake drinking Becks in Sarong. Yep, I'll go with that!

twistedlogic said...

Glad we've sorted that out, WDW! I wasn't too keen on the sarong idea at first but I'm warming to it now;)

Anonymous said...

Jake barefoot in the kitchen in a sarong drinking Becks. thinkin of those beautiful feet.

Anonymous said...

Jake's a sarong boy too - I just knew it!!

A former professor of mine and now long-time friend brought me a sarong from the Philippines.

I wear it all the time, and remember his words: "Just put on your sarong and let your cares float away!"

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm not usually a foot person (prefer them encased in loveable Nike) but I can make an exception for Jake Pia :D

Hi Montaigne - sounds like sensible advice to me. It takes me back to a wonderful time I had on Zanzibar too many years ago now where sarongs were all you needed and had a multiude of purposes. When the biggest worry was hoping a coconut wouldn't fall out of a palm tree onto your head. Happy memories :D But now I'd be missing Jake's films something rotten :D

Anonymous said...

I wonder if the sarong comment was in the context of discussing kilts.

Anonymous said...

p.s. makes it sseem like a less provocative comment. although not alot less.

Anonymous said...

O Im mixing up newspapers. sorry. this is not the Scottish paper. :( an interesting theory blown.

Cherita said...

What a lovely set of tidbits for this evening, WDW. I had never heard the scandalous sarong quote before, and I find the fact that he'd say such a thing far more stimulating than the image itself. What a tease!

Anonymous said...

cherita! Isn't he just!!! LOL!!
Love him to pieces. Thank you WDW. This was delish!

Good morning chaps!

Not moved by Becks,TL? I'm surprised. He may have too many tattoos for my liking and doesn't have the sexiest voice I've ever heard (we know who wins that accolade)but he can smoulder for England. Grrrrrrrrrrr!

And Jake drinking Becks(!)in a sarong! Thanks for that image, upon which I'm putting my own interpretation ;-) How on earth am I going to concentrate on work now??!

Hi WDW,
This is the most fun I've had online @3 AM in long time, readng and laughing about Sarong Jake going commando. Good lord, he's a kick.
TY so much:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone (except night for Sass!) I'm glad to hear that the night was full of happy thoughts of Jake in a sarong! And I bet he'd look fine in a kilt, Pia - what a lovely thought.... Everyone have a great day :D

agent_krycek said...

Well, my last attempt at a comment got eaten so lets try again.

Jake - sarong - commando - no words needed really, and no chance of any work being done by me today (although trying to banish thoughts of Beckham, about as sexy as cold baked beans to me)

If we're all playing 'let dress Jake' I'm voting for blue jeans, and as he looks lovely in white, a gorgeous Spurs top *hides from twistedlogic*

BTW, there are some photos of Jake & Reese at that hotel this weekend over on IHJ - they are a bit intrusive, but at least they were out in the open and not with the kids or attempting to eat a meal in peace, they look very smiley and very cuddled up :)

agent_krycek said...

Sorry, for the double post, forgot to add I too have a huge head (at only 5'2!), when I worked for the police it was a constant source of amusement for some of the officers that a helmet that fitted a 6'4 officer sat like pimple on top of my head.

Anonymous said...

Nadine, sending you big love as well ** and a little bit of envy - I'm still in cafes for a bit longer. Fabulous and killer entente, ma cherie.

Also love to Twisted whose comment to the gas people made me howl - and I couldn't even jump in and thank her :)

And to WDW the blogstress for her extraordinary blogging and for our regular lunch dates featuring the mutually applied phrase "If You'd Just Button It For A Bit And Listen" - House of Commons, please copy).

And Ruby, Pia, montagne, Winterbird and anyone I've forgotten.

And finally Jake, for the sarong and commando image :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Agent Krycke - blogger keeps eating my comments too... :\ Thanks for persevering - Jake in a spurs top - hmmmm, whaddya say Twisted? But definitely with you on the jeans. And I have a slightly large noggin too (I have to wear a man's motorbike helmet...) :D

Absent Anouska - Gotta thank you for our rowdy Jakin lunches - noone should be without them :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

^^^ sorry for the misspelling AK :)

"If You'd Just Button It For A Bit And Listen"

LOL at that one ladies. ;)

Nadine - watch your slashy ideas girlie, there's a very strict (and short), approved list! :D

Jake-sarong-commando...
that's me occupied for the rest of the day.

twistedlogic said...

Good afternoon! You guys are cracking me up here!
Especially Nadine! You naughty girl you!! I specifically said Becks BEER so as to avoid any double entendres (cos the thought of Jake and David Beckham in the same room together, never mind anything else, makes me feel ill) but obviously my plan failed:( If there was a beer called Heath, then that would be an entirely different matter;D

Agent Krycek - I couldn't agree more with your description of Beckham:) And don't worry, no need to hide from me:) Maybe we can agree to timeshare Jake between Arsenal and your lot. I mean, he probably knows nothing about football so he can be a glory hunter and support whoever's higher in the league at any given time. Looks like Jake's a Gooner for life then;)

Pia, I love the thought of Jake in a kilt, being from Scottish stock myself:) He better be wearing my family tartan though;)

twistedlogic said...

Oops! Forgot to say Hi to Anouska- glad to hear I made you laugh:) I know it ain't easy sometimes;)

Anonymous said...

Sarong/commando!Jake is a delightful sight but could it be that he promised his publicist to get the words 'sarong' and commando'into that interview?

agent_krycek said...

////Pia, I love the thought of Jake in a kilt, being from Scottish stock myself:) He better be wearing my family tartan though;)//

After Strictly the other week with Kenny in a sequined kilt I've some very strange Jake kilt based images in my head right now (nice, but strange) - Bet Jake could do a great Paso :D

*Apologies to those who have no idea what I'm talking about

Hi everyone, it's such a beautiful day in Upstate NY, nearly 70 degrees and sunny. I missed a very interesting conversation here last nite it seems. Have an awesome day everyone, I'll touch base later.

agemt K I dont get your references, but Im from Scots stock, too, and wouldnt mind seeing The Precious wielding a broad ax. Commando style beneath his kilt - :)

Men in India wear loincloths, as the Scots wear kilts, esp. for formal occasions.

chillinwitgyllen said...

Lioncloths? Kilts? Sarongs? Not here in the US they don't, but I can dream can't I Jake?

Mea culpa my lovelies. Much as I love dry wit (and can't resist the odd bit of sarcasm) my sense of humour often veers towards the risque...although I have that in common with Jake, which means I don't feel quite so guilty.

(((Anouska)))hello hon - likewise! Keeping my fingers crossed that you'll be on line again at home in double quick time. We need some of your lunchtime effervescence, with which you regale WDW,here on the Blog on a regular basis!

Sorry Ruby :-( My slash tastes are usually very limited too (are you sure they don't make a Heath beer,TL?! They do make a Chris-tal champagne ;-) ),but a wee bit of Becks sparked a flight of fancy just for a moment...that and Jake in a Man United shirt. SLuuurrrp! Why should the London teams supporters have it all their own way?! ;-)

As I type this twaddle, poor WDW will still be slogging her way home. Thinking of you chuck, hope it's one of the better journeys. Ttfn,Nxxx

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW, you have a few hour commute everyday? I'll never complain about my 15 minute drive ever again ;)

Anonymous said...

Hi everyone!

Kilt - yes. Loincloth - yes. Sarong - well OK. But I draw the line at lederhosen. :D

Going off topic here, but this youtube made me giggle. The whistling picture at :24 made me think of Ms. Gooberballs at Jake's hotel, and all of the tippling ladies here (myself included).

Oh so agree neely, I had to research though because I didn't know what Bavarian lederhosen was so here's a description:

brown corduroy knickers, red suspenders, white alpine shirt, knee socks, feathered green hat.

I'm becoming quite worldly since joining this blog.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone :D Damn blogger, keeps eating my comments... Back after 4hours plus commute (with 4 wheel drives to contend with instead of coyotes). I love how the talk of sarongs turned to kilts, lederhosen (remember Rufus Ruby?!) and loin cloths :D

Off to do post if Blogger will let me :\
