Jake interviews Selma Blair for Interview Magazine in 2002

In 2002, Jake Gyllenhaal starred in Highway along with Jared Leto and Selma Blair. I did some searching around and found that, just as David Fincher interviewed Jake for Interview magazine in October, Jake interviewed Selma for the same magazine at the end of 2002.

The interview shows a real warmth, demonstrated from the very beginning as Selma sets the scene by saying that Jake is talking to her (presumably by phone) while she is 'lying on the ground, talking to you with my dog licking my ear. My windows are open, it's sunny and I'm happy. I just wish I saw you more.'

Amongst Selma's answers to Jake's questions about her new projects, there are glimpses of Jake, just as we had peeps into David Fincher when he interveiwed Jake. For instance, Jake's excitement at seeing the band that opened for Selma's boyfriend at a gig in LA: 'JG: Seeing as you're in Los Angeles, did you check out your boyfriend Jason's [Schwartzman] band, Phantom Planet, at the Troubadour when they played? SB: Yeah. They've gotten so good. Actually, you have to see the band that opened up for them. They're called the Like-- JG: --I know! The Like is fabulous. SB: You know them? Wow! I was trying to get into the Troubadour last night to see them again but I couldn't. JG: I was there last night. It was sold out.'

One thing Jake said really made me think. You'll be well aware that in so many interviews Jake says something completely off the wall. It makes us laugh and love Jake more but sometimes I wonder where these thoughts come from. In this interview, Jake owned up to dreaming up words which he would then try and get into interviews (I've done a very similar thing but with Brokeback or Jake quotes in meetings): 'JG: Here's a good story for you: Yesterday I was doing a press junket, and at the beginning of the day I told the publicist who was guiding me around, "I'm going to get two words into my interviews by the end of the day--angora and mauve." Sure enough, by the end of the day, angora and mauve had been used in at least two interviews. SB: How did angora come up? JG: They asked me what the movie I was plugging felt like, and I said, "Angora."'

And the interview ends. 'JG: You know, the nice thing about you is you aim to please--which is why I'm so endeared by you. SB: Aww. JG: And because you tell me you want to have sex with me all the time. [both laugh] JG: Not like that. No, no. You say it in a much more loving way. SB: I don't really say it like that!' Jake describes Selma as: "this beautiful, random, crazy woman. We met making a movie together and we spent most of our time fake humping each other. From there, our friendship formed."

I've paid for this article and it won't let me link to it at the moment, so please bear with me.

Includes pictures from IHJ.

Edited to add: There are new pap pictures of Jake and Reese eating out at Madeos on Friday night. The pictures were taken of the pair inside the restaurant and so I won't be posting them - they're far too intrusive and I believe everyone should be allowed to eat in peace. If you want to look at them, it's your choice and they're here. Talking of which, isn't it time for that Bloody Mary you promised me?

WDW, thank you for finding this gem. I haven't read the whole interview yet, but what you gave us was wonderful enough! I know this interview was about Selma Blair, but I just loved it when Jake told the story about getting two random words into an interview!!! That was funny and seems like a very Jake thing to do.

Doesn't it make you want to go and find that interview where he says angora and mauve? LOL

Was Selma Blair's boyfriend in DD with Jake? I seem to recall the DD commentary where Richard Kelly talks about the scene in the bathroom when the not very nice guy (who's name escapes me) gets Donnie in a headlock with a knife, and says that they are actually good friends in RL.

I absolutely adore Jake in "Highway", I think Pilot is such a loveable character and Jake plays him perfectly.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Christie - I'm glad you liked it. I've paid for a whole bunch of stuff which means it's hard to post links but I hope that doesn't matter as long as I put all the Jake things in. I've spent the whole day researching Jake - what a hardship :D

To be honest it's some time since I saw Highway - we need Ruby, she's the expert! I don't think she was. Wasn't her boyfriend Jason in Bubble Boy?

I think it's abut time I got reacquainted with Pilot :D

Hello WDW, yes I can see that being a hardship. You deserve a drink for bringing us such a wonder. What will it be? Stella, bloody mary, aqua velva?

I am sure you are right about Selma's b/f, I obviously don't know what I'm talking about! LOL

Getting reaquainted with Pilot sounds like a good plan to me. There's something about the way Jake talks and smiles in this film, it does something to me. Plus the elements of sexual confusion are rather interesting too.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Christie - I have no idea what I'm taking about with Selma's boyfriend either! I've looked around and I'm totally confusing him with the wrong person in Bubble Boy! The guy you're thinking of is Alex Greenwald I think.

Pilot's character is so muddled but still sympathetic. I reckon I might watch that again tomorrow.

I'd have the blue stuff but I'm out of blue so I'll go for the red :D

I'll skip the pap pix and join you in a drink, WDW.

Tickled me alot to realize that Jake is an intentional joker in interviews, not an off the cuff joker. Ah our clever boy. So Im figuring the "my house is a house of icebergs" from GQ initerview was
a part of this game. "Okay, Im gonna get in the words: "icebergs" and "pig slaughter"."

Pretty effing funny, kiddo! Caused consternation all around the globe.

I swore I would not get "into" BBJake, but BB is next on my Netflix list. thanks guys (I guess) for your encouragement.

In the meantime, I'm appreciating Brit trained actors: Alex Guiness (in the Tinker Tailor Spy series) and a really lengthy interview with Daniel Day Lewis this weekend in the NYT - he is Brit theatre trained! - one of my faves.

Also listening to bluegrass this sat. night: LOVE Bill Monroe! Goes good with pink gin and cleaning the fridge. OMG you should see the stuff that Im finding? Some has turned to liquid! what WAS it?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Positibely Pia! It is funny thinking Jake plans some of his games - loved that! And I'm glad you're going to give BB Jake a go, he deserves it.

I adore Daniel Day lewis, I saw him in theatre many years ago.

The thing with fridges is I find it's best not to disturb them after a while :/

chillinwitgyllen said...

Stretchhhhhh...that nap felt good, now I'm ready to play, maybe a bloody but that red wine they were drinking at the restaurant looked good. I'm surprised they sat across from each other, my husband and I never did that, we always sat next to each other so it looks funny to me.

Highway is another one of early Jake films I haven't seen, I've got to get busy.

Thanks for the great posts.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks CWG - glad you feel better :) Highway is WELL worth a look. I love road movies, especially when Jake's in them.

Anonymous said...

Let the fridge BE - don't disturb it? but then things turn to iiquid and become noxious! Okay, pia, open another yogher carton.

Ive often seen Jake as Laertes, Maggie as Ophelia, of course, and I continue with this vision, DDL playing Hamlet

Hamlet, Hamlet, acting balmy,
Hamlet, Hamlet, loves his mommy,

(Words by : Adam McNaughton
Tune of : The Mason's Apron)

Jake and DDL in tights in a sword fight! OMG OMG OMG!

Iggy said...

Oh my god. What a find that interview was WDW. Thank you! The image of Jake and Selma spending most of their time dry humping each other is ..well...mind blowing. CWG get Highway! That was another film I wasn't too sure about but loved. I adore Pilot, I know he's a naughty boy but he's so endearing with it.

And positively pia, I think you are 100% right about that pig slaughter LOL. But do get into BB. I resisted it for ages, thinking I didn't want to see Jake too young or too goofy, but I loved it completely! The behind the scenes part is wonderful.

And I agree with Christie, I'd love to read that 'Angora and Mauve' interview..I'd like to read how he slipped the Mauve in! This certainly gives us something to look for in new interveiws, see if he's still playing the game.

Iggy said...

Jake in tights and a sword fight....Oh God, I wish you were a Hollywood producer, positively pia...

chillinwitgyllen said...

Rosiet, makes me wonder why someone hasn't banked on Jakes nakedness yet, seeing Jake naked in most of a film would surely draw a crowd.

Anonymous said...

WDW yes I resisted Jake young and goofy but finally saw Highway - well frankly when you love somebody you wanna see their baby pictures! right?

one of the things that STUNS me is how Ang Lee had the genius to use Jake as Jack in BBMt - Jack Twist is so diff'rnt from every other role he has played. And done with such integrity! OMY!

OMG Im ready to open the third yoghert carton.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

You're right Pia - I s'pose I leave the fridge long enough for someone else to deal with it ;) I saw Daniel Day Lewis play Hamlet, such a long time ago, twenty years pretty much. Maggie would be a great Ophelia.

Thanks Rosie :) I felt exactly the same as you about Highway and Bubble Boy - Highway in particular. But I'm so glad I aw it. Crazy but a lot more to it and Jake was adorable. As he was in Bubble Boy of course. I cry with laughter when I watch that.

Maybe we should see if it's possible to track down the mauve and angory interviews! It reminds me of Jake's decription of his suit on Conan this spring.

Hey CWG I think we're still recovering from Swoff's santa dance!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - I'm intrigued to know what's in these yoghurt cartons! I'm ready to move onto the Bloodys now :) I think that's why I saw Highway - to see where Jake had come from. I love the way you put it. And Ang had genius in his soul when he cast Jake as Jack - perfection.

Iggy said...

CWG!!! I want you to be a Hollywood producer too, you got the right idea girl!! Jake and Nekkid...oh yeah. LOL..

PP, I agree Ang was inspired to cast Jake as Jack. I don't think there is an actor on the planet that could have brought that character to life so perfectly as Jake. I can't help it, that will always be my absolute favourite Jake role. Some of our friends over on ej have just spent an evening in the company of Ang Lee and James Schamus, and I can't wait to hear their reports of it!

Christie said...

Thanks for giving us the option to watch or not watch the restaurant vid, WDW. I really appreciated that. I have no real desire to see them trying to eat a meal in peace.

I agree with you that Pilot in Highway is a muddled boy, but he's played with such cutability and sympathy by Jake that you just root for him all the way. I have Rosie to thank for getting me to see that film, and I was so glad she did.

I wonder how hard it would be to find the "angora/mauve" interview. We just need the year and the film, right? (she says, as if she does this all the time!).

CWG, good to see you around and that you have recovered from last night's shenanigans.

Have a good night everyone, and thanks again WDW, for such a great site.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Oh Rosie I'm looking forward to hearing about that as well :)

chillinwitgyllen said...

Christie, I take no responsibility for what I say here tonite as I'm still hungover, I apologize for the rude comment about the 'banking on Jake' part but I don't apologize for the naked part :)

Anonymous said...

Can't you just google "muave" - ? -
dyin' to see Jake say mooo-aaave. Its kind like "smooootch".

giggle giggle

and WDW you do not want to know what I packed away in the em[ty yoghert cartons many moons ago - we will never know what it WAS -

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I've now found a link to the article :D It's added to the post.

Hi Christie - it was Ruby who got me to see Highway and I'm glad she did :D

Pia - I feel quite faint at the thought. To revivie myself I'm going to concoct a Bloody Mary (while listening to the Zodiac soundtrack) :D

Anonymous said...

WDW the thot of Jake saying MAUVE
or what's in my yoghert containers?
:) :) :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

A little bit of both, I reckon Pia! (I'm not missing the celery...) There are a whole load of words I'd like to hear Jake say :)

chillinwitgyllen said...

I'm headed out right now to rent Highway, hope they have it.

One word of advise, limit your bloodies to 3, that fourth is a killer.

WDW, agree with you on the celery. It's purpose is purely aesthetic.

Anonymous said...

Jake, say "mauve" - OMG - oh Jake talk dirty! - oh Jake, say "celery" - whut? (oh gosh Sat. night on WDW)

Anonymous said...

Thanks for darlin' interview, WDW! Jake is a real sweetie. I want ALL of his baby pictures!

Fridge cleaned! Yay! Let the day after tomorrow come!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - good job! You deserve a Jakebreak. I'm trying to decide between watching Zodiac and Bubble Boy, but I reckon it'll have to be my all time fave Zodiac. Glad you liked the interview :D There should be plenty more to keep us warm through these long winter nights...

chillinwitgyllen said...

Boohoo, they didn't have Highway :(
I'll have to settle for Zodiac again since I own it, thanks for the tip WDW.

DDLewis interview very interesting - ! the actors life - ! http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/11/magazine/11daylewis-t2.html?pagewanted=1

thinking of course of Jake, now working with Jim Sheridan, as well as the challenges of an actor's life.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Enjoy Zodiac CWG - you just can't go wrong with that one.

Thanks for the link Pia - it's a good thought thinking of Jake working with Jim Sheridan :)

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Thanks for this interview, ii's so cute and funny - typical Jake! I just wish there was an audio clip like the Fincher one but never mind, this is great,. THank you:)
I liked Highway too although I've only watched it once. There's something really sweet and endearing about Pilot and the fiulm itself is really entertaining and funny. And Jake says my name in it;)

Oh, and I'm sorry but those trainers Jake has on in the pics below this post are horrible. I'm sorry but all that yellow is too much for me. I'm very disappointed with Jake cos I expressly said the other day I didn't like yellow in the other trainers he was wearing, so what does he do? He wears even yellower ones!!! Jake!!! What happened to the sweet, good, obedient Jake who used to do everything I told him, like stand properly on escalators, appear on Jonathan Ross, show us his chest hair and have a shave??!! Normal service better be resumed soon or I'm switching my affection to Tobey Maguire!!;)

chillinwitgyllen said...

I'm sipping on a really good red wine called Seghesio Zindfandel but make sure you get the old vine.

Does anyone here think I'm a lush?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Twisted Logic - that is so funny :D I hope you're having a good weekend, I know it's a busy one for you.

Bad Jake, wearing ultra yellow trainers expressly against your orders. But he did shave for you (although he seems to have got bored of that now) and I'm sure, if we could see him, he'd be behaving on the escalators. Next time we see him, we'll just have to lay down some ground rules. But pleeeeese Tobey Maguire??

Hey CWG I'm a bit partial to a Zinfandel myself - and you're no more a lush than many of the rest of us :D And it is Saturday night...

twistedlogic said...

Hi WDW! Having a great weekend thanks, but might have over done it a bit on the old Chardonnay (hence all the typos in my previous comment- sorry about that!)

Tbh I'm not sure where Tobey Maguire came from, it was a bit random. I suppose cos people call him the poor mans's Jake Gyllenhaal? But the real Jake has some serious making up to do. Next time I see him he better be standing nicely on an escalator on the tube here in London, cleanshaven, with his shirt open to his waist, blue jeans, nice non-yellow trainers, on his way to perform in a six month stint in the West End.Not bothered what the play is, but shirtless and/or singing would be a bonus. Yeah, I've definitely had a drink or two too many!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - what a bunch of boozers we are tonight - I don't expect any of us will be up early in the morning. I agree with your plans for Jake, sounds good to me, although I'm not so bothered by the trainers - you should see some of the Nike I have. When I flew to Toronto one pair was rigorously inspected by security, possibly for being rather odd but probably more because they were so incredibly cool ;)

twistedlogic said...

Lol! That's funny about your trainers WDW! Maybe the security person just had a Nike fetish;) I have two pairs of Nikes, one white with a red tick swoosh thing and the other blue with a white tick- I must be getting boring in my old age;)
In fairness to Jake though I just read through the other post and it seems a lot of people like the yellow trainers, so ok, I understand he has to please all his fans not just me. So I'll let him off (again!);)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I can see we're going to have to go Nike shopping TL... Well, that's it for me tonight - I've just been watching Ellen (the dreadfully abridged version - sigh) and Jon Stewart so I'm heading off chuckling. Have a good night everyone and I'm looking forward to catching up with everyone tomorrow - I realise that across the pond there are some hours to go yet so have a good evening :)

chillinwitgyllen said...

WDW, thanks for the reassurance, good nite.

twistedlogic said...

Night WDW! I think I'm going to follow your lead and hit the hay- after I've watched a bit of BBM. I was going to watch some Highway after reading that interview but I'm going through a BBM phase at the moment and my hand seems to pick it off the shelf instinctively.
Hope evryone has / is having a good weekend:) Btw WDW, I know you like to think of this place as a pub (and we do!) but I'm thinking tomorrow morning we could do with a caff! I'm going to need beans on toast, chips, diet coke and strong tea with plenty of sugar! Oh, and about a dozen paracetamol:( Cheers! Speak to you tomorrow!

Thanks for the link to the Interview. What a sweetie he is. LOL at Selma asking him to have sex all the time.

You can tell from the picture where she is touching his shaved head that she likes him a lot. ( Jarhead era).

You work so hard to find us good stuff Kate. Many thanks.

Random observations from the Interview interview:

Re: Alex Greenwald (Phantom Planet) used to date Kirsten Dunst. Jake Gyllenhaal used to date Kirsten Dunst. Selma Blair used to date Jason Schwartzman (Phantom Planet). Jason Schwartzman and Kirsten Dunst starred in Marie Antoinette. Jason Schwartzman now (or recently) dates Claire Oswalt. Claire Oswalt used to date Jake's bud Austin Nichols.

Okay, everyone sing 'It's A Small World After All'.

I LOVE Selma Blair!!! This was a sweet interview. Thanks WDW! And Thanks so much for not posting the restaurant pictures.A poster on another site said that the pictures were actually taken by someone inside the restaurant with a camera phone and they didn't realize they were being photographed. I think that is despicable. Jake and Reese were on the lower level and someone took the picture from the upper level.
I know this. These restaurants benefit from famous people coming there. If a restaurant gains a reputation for being popular with celebrities, it becomes popular with a much wider audience and it gains free publicity. I know the paps are unavoidable outside popular restaurants, but the management of the restaurant should post something or at least put a card on the tables about a no photo policy. Everyone has the right to eat dinner in peace. If celebrities find that they cannot be inside a restaurant unmolested, they will stop going there. With all the b-listers who frequent the trendy nightclubs in H'wood, there are no photos of anyone inside. Whoever did this was WAY out of line.

agent_krycek said...

Thank you for the interview, and thank you for not posting the restaurant photos, waaaay to intrusive. I love Highway, beautifully off the wall, and Jake is fantastic as Pilot, never seen anyone look that cute in a golf visor before or since.

Iggy said...

TL, look, if this is how you are going to be seeing Jake in London in the future, you better get used to me being glued to your side...coz a better description of heaven I ain't heard. Well. That's not QUITE true....but lets keep it clean huh?

////Next time I see him he better be standing nicely on an escalator on the tube here in London, cleanshaven, with his shirt open to his waist, blue jeans, nice non-yellow trainers, on his way to perform in a six month stint in the West End.Not bothered what the play is, but shirtless and/or singing would be a bonus.Yeah, I've definitely had a drink or two too many!
///

I LOVE the way you think girl! And as it's Sunday Morning I haven't even had a drink as an excuse....

bobbyanna, I completely agree with what you said about that restaurant too. It's bad enough the paps, but other diners?...phew.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone :D Thanks for the fabulous comments overnight and this morning - I'm running a bit late due to discovering what Bloodies on top of Shiraz can do to you. TL - I burst out laughing at WDW transforming into a greasy spoon caff this moning!! I'd love to cook you all a fry up English brekkie (Well, obviously Mr WDW would do the actual cooking), so just pop over.

Hey LG - good to see you! I remember that Jarhead picture, I'll have to dig it out. I love how cosy Jake is with so many of his friends, Selma included. And I really can't blame her for asking him all the time. She's obviously very polite ;)

Hey Felicia - I had no idea that Kirsten used to date Alex and that Jason was in Marie Antoinette. I love that film but I don't know the names.

Hi Bobbyanna - I generally have no problem posting pap pics because I tend to think of them as an inconvenience that accompanies being a movie star and all the wonderful benefits that come with that, and I believe that many of us have far worse things to put up with in our daily lives, many of which compromise our own privacy. But there are pap pics and then there are these other types of picture which are totally out of line in my opinion. For me, it just boils down to leaving someone to eat in peace. Walking down a public street in LA is one thing, having dinner is an entirely different matter.

Morning Agent Krycek - Jake is so cute as Pilot - even with a spider drawn across his face and wearing goggles!

Morning Rosie - that is some image TL painted for us. We'll have to give her more booze so she can do it again :)

Have a great Sunday everyone - take it easy :D

I totally agree, WDW. When people are out in public it's pretty much "fair game" so maybe a person might not like being "shot" at a tennis match or a ball game, but it happens. Ironically, I'm sure there are ppl with camera phones inside all the trendy LA nightclubs. But seldom, IF EVER, are there any pictures of celebs (Paris Hilton excluded. She has her own camera!!!LOL!!!.)We very rarely see what is going on inside the confines of a nightclub. Thank goddess!
Unfortunately, ever since the Rome FF spread in PEOPLE magazine, I think a lot more people are aware of J&R and want to get in on being "stalkerazzi." Some agencies even offer bounties to 'non-professionals.'
I had no idea of all these semi-obscure connections, felicia! Alex Greenwald and Claire Oswalt aren't names I'm at all familiar with, but Jason Schwartzman I've heard of. Isn't he Sophia Coppola's cousin? I think I once saw a picture of him sometime ago with Jake and the SNL guy, Andy Samberg joking around. And both Andy Samberg and Adam Levine are rumored to have dated Kirsten. I know. I need a life. LOL!

Anonymous said...

... and Claire Oswalt (who is an artist not an actress so no-one will have heard of her outside the context of being Austin's ex) was at Cannes with Kirsten and Jason during Marie Antoinette promotion. Jason is not dating her at the moment, if he ever was.

I think Jake and Reese are trying to be seen, and X-17 seem to be on some kind of retainer arrangement.

WDW, thanks for posting the Highway stuff and the lovely interview I read many moons ago :) It's a nice little movie and there was great chemistry among all three stars.

twistedlogic said...

Hey Rosie! You're more than welcome to be glued to my side if or when Jake appears in London like I described- I'll need someone to hold up me up if that happens!! And WDW, these images come to my head with or without alcohol so I don't need more booze to think them up (which is just as well as I'm never going to drink again!). Thanks for volunteering Mr WDW to cook us a hangover cure breakfast! It's too late for that now but after beans on toast and lots of tea and diet coke to wash down the painkillers I'm feeling vaguely human again now;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bobbyanna - wow, more strange and weird connections :D

And more from you too Anouska! It definitely looks like X17 has Jake and Reese on retainer at the moment :)

Glad yu're feeling more human TL - never drinking again, eh?

Anonymous said...

I have to laugh at any notion x17 is on retainer, especially when Jake and Reese's behavior indicates the exact opposite. This isn't a reality TV show.Jake looked so upset, and Reese looked so startled when they were shot in the car at his parents(?) house. Then there is the picture of her ducking down in his car when leaving that restaurant. Jake and Reese appear to me to be blocking the paps in their own way. Can't collect big fees for pictures when they can't see faces. And they can't get as much money for pictures when there are no PDAs. There have been some articles in the past about these "agencies" that retain paparazzi. X17 in particular was examined. They are notorious for trading with a bad type of person. These aren't professional photographers as they used to be 20 years ago and sometimes still are. Many of these people have criminal backgrounds, prison records. They are druggies. One day they are doing valet parking, the next, they have a camera. The standards are very low, and when they are in a pack, they can be pretty dangerous and often fight with each other. It gets very rough. They also shout obscenities at celebs and their kids, trying to provoke them, and they often attempt to stage accidents....so they can sue and settle. They're a nasty lot of people.x17 trades with people many of the more professional agencies won't use. Ironically, the couple who own x17 now live in the same neighborhood many of their victims live. (He started out as a "photojournalist" many years ago and then set up his own "agency" with his wife.) I feel sorry for the young couple in a way. I'm remembering the look on Reese's mother's face when she gave her a huge, enveloping hug at LAX, when Reese was heading out for Rome.Welcome to the "new normal."
