Jake's lost Romeo and Atticus gets a treat

In Rendition we get to hear Jake quote a line from Shakespeare rather beautifully, Portia's words in the Merchant of Venice to be precise: 'but I fear you speak upon the rack, Where men enforced do speak anything.' Last night a friend asked me if I knew anything about Jake's proposed plans to star as Romeo in, of course, Romeo and Juliet, in the West End of London in 2004, and who his Juliet would have been. This was, of course, in the wake of Jake's award winning success in This Is Our Youth.

I found an article from Variety (28 June 2004) which says: 'Those who track such goings-on may remember Jake Gyllenhaal was supposed to be starting rehearsals about now for his Shakespearean debut, playing Romeo to Lynn Collins' Juliet on the West End. No longer. "Jake is now so hot that he has movies back-to-back for the next two years," says Laurence Boswell, "and by then he'll be too old." Boswell helmed the 23-year-old's award-winning West End turn two years ago in "This Is Our Youth." The fact is, says Boswell, "Romeo" discussions took place when Gyllenhaal "was king of the indies. That was when he was going to be the next big thing; now, he's become the next big thing."' My heart goes out to Lynn Collins, that's for sure. [I'm unable to provide a link as this is subscription only, but this is the full article.]

A book about Jake

A 'Pop Culture' guide to Jake was published in September. Aimed, I think, at teenagers, and with a strange reference to paparazzi in the title ('A View From the Paparazzi), this is an odd one, but it spreads the word of Jake to youngsters on both sides of the planet - not a bad thing, I think - and it seems to be more of an intoduction to Jake's films than anything to do with paps. Thanks to Rosie for the info!

Atticus' day out

Jake has been 'caught in the act' by People magazine giving Atticus a treat: 'Jake Gyllenhaal, dropping his German Sheppard, Atticus, off for a spa day at LA Dogworks in Hollywood. And it's not cheap! Treatments there start at $200.' This Hollywood Dog Spa looks better than most hotels I've stayed at.

Maggie hosts a charity event in NYC

Maggie, along with Peter Gabriel, hosted a charity event in New York this week, in aid of the human rights charity Witness. Among the guests were Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins, Meg Ryan and Goldie Hawn.

oh WDW... you just reminded me of what I've missed... Jake was in London doing "This is our Youth" (at Garrick, i believe) the first year I moved to London! I still remember i walked past outside the theatre and looked at the poster, said to my friend,"oh, it's the Donnie Darko kid"... but I never went to see it. Imagine - I would have watched him every night! :P

hopefully he'll be back to West End some time in the future.

Hi Winterbird - you and me both! I was in London then too. But let's hope we have a second chance.

I kick myself too thinking that I could have seen Jake live back then, but I didn't even know who he was at the time! In fact I might have walked past him in the street or stood behind him in the queue for the cashpoint and I'll never know...*sigh*
He did sound pretty definite about being back in London soon in the Virgin interview but with the three films he's got lined up I doubt he'll have the time to do theatre any time soon:( Maybe part of the Moon Film is being filmed here?

Thanks so much WDW for all the Jake treats tonight. I look forward to reading your evenings posts, they are so entertaining and interesting. I didn't realise that Jake was considered for Romeo, but I could very much imagine him play the doomed lover. As for This Is Our Youth, I remember reading a review in one of the Sunday papers about Jake's performance in the play and there was nothing but praise for him. And this was before I knew anything about him. Imagine being in the audience to see him play? *swoon* Like you winterbird, I would have watched him every night.

I bought the play and if anyone has not read it, I would highly recommend it. It's an excellent and funny play anyway, but reading it with Jake in mind just adds something so special to it - you can see and hear Jake utter every word his character speaks. And there are some fantastic lines, I just wish there was some video footage of him so we could see for ourselves why he won an award for it.

Thanks to for the link about Maggie's charity event. I couldn't open it unfortunately, but I love the pic you posted of her and I applaud her social conscience. Oh and I share my birthday with her too, so I'm super pleased to be sharing it with such a wonderful and intelligent woman! (She's a lot younger than me though!).

Oh and that pic of Jake and Susan Sarandon....love it.

Hi Twisted Logic - we'll get our chance I'm sure. It does sound like one of these films may do some shooting in London, a lot do after all. Ryan Phillippe's film is making a right mess of the street by my office, they broke some windows down there last night. I wonder if it's a big fight scene. It is very possible.

Hi Christie - the reviews for TIOY were wonderful. It sounds like the play is well worth reading - thanks for that. I'm sorry you couldn't opn that link, it works for me so I don't know why :( And you sahre Maggie's birthday?! How cool is that. Jake's is just a few days from mine and I do like that :D

Hi Christie - thanks for telling us about the play, I'll definitely see if I can get a copy of it even though it will probably make me even more upset to think of what I missed:(

Hey WDW! Wouldn't that just totally brighten up your days if Jake was filming outside your office? You'd be redlining it every day to get to work!;D

Hey WDW, as usual thanks for the great posts. Glad to hear your feeling better. It's surprising to me that Jake didn't attend Maggie's event.

Hey TL - that would be funny - I'd be redlining it to work but I wouldn't actually go to work!

Thanks CWG - back to normal now. I suppose Jake couldn't get up to NYC. Have a good night!

I saw a production of TIOY directed by Woody Harrelson in Toronto (with some great Canadian actors) a couple of years back. Great play and I would have so loved to see Jake in it. I was not a Jake fan at the time. But when I became one and found out Jake did the play I new he was perfect for it. Love reading all the great reviews.

CWG, from all the pap pics Jake has been in LA. Maggie's event was in NYC and Peter didn't seem to be attending either.

Alright I confess, I still haven't seen may early Jake movies like them one mentioned on this new post.

WDW, so funny, lol when you wrote that doggy dayspa was nicer than some you've stayed at, ditto :)

I would give a lot to see Jake in a play!!! (A year's worth of potato chips for starters!)He might be too old for Romeo, but he'd be perfect for Hamlet...IMHO...I nominate Emmy Rossum to be his Ophelia! Now. Have your people to call my people WDW and lets get this thing produced!!!LOLOL!!!!!
I like Maggie. I think she will develop into one the great character actresses of her generation. And I love how outspoken and committed and smart she is.And she's hanging out with two of my favorite people when she is with Tim Robbins and "my" Susan.
Meryl Streep and Susan Sarandon, along with Jessica Lange, are three actors of a certain age,I have much affection for.

Off topic, but not:I saw American Gangster.Interesting. I enjoyed it.Denzel and Russell did a fine job, etc.Ruby Dee might actually get an Oscar nomination for supporting. An exciting, compelling true story. But something was a bit off.The kind of tension that builds from a cat & mouse pursuit was lacking. It wasn't very demanding. And there was a particular scene, right near the end, that should have filled me with revulsion and outrage.Instead, I was mildly disgusted. The "big scene" btwn Denzel and Ruby?I just couldn't emotionally engage. Then the "big scene" outside curch btwn Russell and Denzel. I can't explain or describe it, but there was something missing. It had everything it needed to be a great story. It was also 2 hours and 40 minutes long. And it was the top in Box Office for its opening weekend. And I still haven't figured out why. OK. It was about a big time gangster in Harlem. Lots of blood and mayhem. It starred Denzel and Russell. And yet. (Thinking about Jake, and Zodiac and Rendition. Shouldn't compare, I know.)

Morning everyone :) Friday - phew...

Hi Pia - I was born in the last few minutes of the year :)

Morning Get Real - that is interesting that you saw a different version of the play (and in one of my favourite places too).

Hey CWG - looks like you've got some serious movie watching to catch up on!! I'm sure people will give you some tips but why not start with October Sky - I fell in love with that film this year myself.

Morning Bobbyanna - Emmy would be a perfect Ophelia for Jake's Hamlet. I love these two together. But I can also see Jake in any one of Shakespeare's comedies, such as my favourite Twelfth Night. You're right - let's sort it!

Thanks for that about American Gangster - although, speaking for myself, that is entirely the sort of film I don't go to see. I think I've probably said this before here, but I cannot abide gangster movies - possibly (well, probably) my least favourite genre. I'm definitely more of a Moon Project or romantic weepie type of gal :D

It would be fabulous if Jake filmed in London, sadly I don't think any of my local leafy, North London Suburb could really double for the Moon :-(

I've a horrible feeling I turned down tickets for This is Our Youth - round about then I did get offered a free ticket for a play in London, 'with some good young American actors in it' - normally I'd have said yes, but a stinking cold made me turn them down without investigating further....

P.S.. Finally got round to getting myself a blogger ID - failed Fabric hunter and ranter against T4 presenters here!

Good to see you Agent Krycek! I'm so glad you got a name and I like this one, it reminds me of warm sunny days (or freezing cold wet days) watching the tennis at Wimbledon. Ooh, not so good about the play - maybe it was an entirely different one ;)

Can I just call you "failed Fabric hunter and ranter against T4 presenters"! lol I think it has a certain ring to it. lol

It sounds like you did indeed pass up on seeing TIOY....although would it help if you missed the performance that Jake wasn't in? Remember they changed the actors a few times, I know Matt Damon did it once, with Casey Affleck. So convince yourself it was that one, so you don't have to beat yourself up over it.

Hope everyone is ok this Friday. It's very wet and windy here up North. Leaves blowing everywhere.

Hi Christie! A beautiful day here in the south, but crispy cold, brrr. Snuggly weather.

Is there ANY Londoner on here who saw This Is Our Youth? :(

[Chillinwitgyllen]

Jake stayed on the other side of the continent for the sake of balance. Having Maggie's fans and Jake's fans in New York would tip North America and raise California in the air. ;-)

I was wondering about Atticus, if he was still around. WE don't see Jake hanging out with his doggie friend anymore. Haven't seen him in months.

Nice that he's having a spa treatment
