When Jake Gyllenhaal was a guest on the David Letterman Show a month ago he walked in wearing his smart suit and came out as casual as the Jake we know and love. This before and after was captured on a fun video which you can watch here (click 'Watch flash preview'). I've highlighted two scenes here, bcause they made me feel good for some reason. In the first picture we see Jake exchanging a smile with his bodyguard while in the second we see the BG putting himself between Jake and the traffic. I like this man, who also earned a hug from the lucky lady that we have often seen accompanying Jake to such events as the BAFTAs, Cannes and Toronto.
Rendition 'makes you feel what they feel'
It turns out that Lions for Lambs has not done so well at the box office either, taking under $7 million on its opening weekend. One would have thought that if a single film about the war in Iraq and the war on terror would have put bums on seats, it would have been this, with the heavy muscle of Robert Redford and Tom Cruise behind it. But no. This supports the opinion, expressed by Jake, that people would prefer not to know what is going on and films such as Rendition hold no interest for them. Nevertheless, good reviews of Rendition are out there and many journalists and commentators have urged audiences to see this film.
The San Antonio Express has this powerful statement about Rendition: 'Some movies are irrelevant, a collection of images as fleeting as the box of popcorn on your lap. Others grab you by the scruff of the neck, forcing you to see, think and feel. They stay with you long past the closing credits... "Rendition, " which stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon, is one of the latter. It is hard to watch, harder to digest. Like all great movies, it transports you to the screen where the characters live and breathe; it makes you feel what they feel... As the blurbs say, the movie comes straight from the headlines, but the headlines are not as gut-wrenching as this film. The stories give you the details, many of them horrific, but they do not make you sweat or cry or scream. "Rendition" does, if only psychologically, if only internally.'
The San Francisco Chronicle (just the name of this paper puts a Zodiac smile on my face) had this to say: 'An after-burn remains in "Rendition," too - in the images of torture the viewer can't forget, the imploded guilt in Gyllenhaal's face and the volcanic conflicts of a North African police chief (Igal Naor) torn by duty, culture and family. The wheels of this movie grind at times, as they do, albeit in different ways, in "The Kingdom." But "Rendition" is finally a more truthful, open-eyed work.'
So what's Maggie been up to?
It's been a while since we've seen Maggie here, but she continues to do work for charities, including the Clothes off Our Back charity, to which she donated her dress from the Oscars. Here you can read the account of the person fortunate enough to buy this beautiful dress. On Thursday night, a beautiful Maggie was attending a dinner at the Longchamp boutique in Soho, NYC, to celebrate Longchamp's collboration with the bag designer Michel Gaubert.

Amazing video, WDW! Gosh poor celebs! However it seems we have a name for the body guard. I think he was greeted as "Mister K"!
Doncha think?
more later. Im delighted to have a name for the b.g. He's taking care of our Precious!
Hey Positively Pia! I love that - and so he shallst be known as Mr K. And look at how he cares for Jake and is rewarded by hugs from his friends. Excellent!
A couple of new spots to add to your Gyllenhaal Culinary travels. According to this blogger, Jake (and Reese) were seen at Ad Hoc and Bouchon Bakery, two Thomas Keller establishments.
Jake is such a foody fanboy!
Thanks for that UltraViolet! - it's been a while since one of my Eating with the Gyllenhaals features - it's about time for a new one :) Food and Jake, the perfect combo (especially when it involves cake).
WDW love that video, some guy asked about his mom and that other guy called him 'loverboy'. It's true Mister K takes care of precious cargo.
Thanks Ultraviolet, I'll add it to list.
Here's some more:
Bar Pitti
Bombay Talkie
Bonsignour Cafe
I've been reserching. Chrisite, wish we were there at the same time, would love to finally meet another Gyllenhaalic :)
Hi CWG - it is a wonderful video :D Jake is so loved in it and it reminds me of some absolutely amazing red carpet experiences. Good old Mr K.
Oh, no Chillin, you'd have to fly cross country to go to those two places. They are in Yountville, which is in Calfornia wine country. I meant that Kate should add them to her Gyllenhaal food series.
Sorry for the confusion! And h ave a great time in NYC.
Ultraviolet, how funny, there's a Bouchon bakery in NYC too, Columbus circle, heehee.
...and there's very little I like more than California Wine Country, let's be honest ;)
Ha - how considerate of Jake to pick a place that visitors to both coasts can try on their Gyllenventures :)
All this bakery and wine talk is not making this day go by any faster!
Just as well that I've just had a huge Pasta dinner a la Jake (I decided to forego the Starbursts, they wouldn't have added much) and I have a bottle of California Zinfandel. If only I had Jake's chocolate mint icecream for dessert...
Another bounty of Gyllenhaal goodness, WDW. I didn't watch the vid but I was a little concerned by Jake's get up in the pic below the San Antonio Express Rendition review (which I absolutely loved by the way - just wish more people felt the same way as that critic) -do you think he got ready in a rush or what? His top is all lopsided, and his trousers - is it me, or do they look way too long for him? Was he rushing so much that he put on someone else's trousers?!! (Imagine realising you are wearing Jake Gyllenhaal's trousers by mistake).
I do worry about the oddest things.
Nice pic of Maggie, as always. Wonder what she'll be doing to celebrate her 30th on Friday?
Thanks for all the great pics and reviews.
CWG, I'm impressed by your research skills. I will be making notes of these places and hope to drag my friend along to as many as possible, whether she likes it or not.
It is a shame that we won't be in NYC at the same time, that would have been wonderful to have met. You'll have to go to a Jake hangout, have your pic taken and when I go the following week, I'll do the same and we can then stick the two pics together, making it look like we were actually there at the same time. LOL
Hi Christie - Jake definitely looks like he got dressed in a hurry. I love him looking all tousled ;) I've been wondering if Jake will head to NYC for Maggie's Big 30. I like the idea about sticking the pics together - just the kind of artiness I'd expect from a couple of Gyllenhaalics :D
Christie what a great idea, consider it done.
WDW, I couldn't agree with you more, California wines are supreme.
Sounds like Jake a la mode is the perfect dinner (no, being with Jake would have made it perfect :)
Oh WDW,
I loved these reviews in the San Antonio Express and the San Francisco Chronicle of Rendition. It's so true, this movie affects you even more than the headlines - because it gives them life and humanity. I wish that more people had had the chance to experience it, and think about it.
Hi Marina - thanks so much for that. I am so proud of Jake making Rendition and reading reviews like this, which are out there, makes my day. This film really does breath life into the headlines and I hope that more people will give the DVD a go.
WDW,
The video of Jake and Mr. K is precious. He's doing a great job of protecting Jake and he can share the odd smile with him; but who wouldn't share a smile with Jake.
I lived in San Antonio for more than 9 years. One of the great things about living there, is their newspaper, The SA Express.
I'm happy to see other reviewers, reflect my opinion about Rendition. Jake and everyone involved should be really proud of their accomplishment.
Reese will never eat better; Jake cooks and he's a gourmand...lucky girl:)
Reese better watch her cute little figure :)
Hi Sass - isn't it great? And Mr K is doing such a good job. i was worried when I saw Jake signing with his back to moving traffic but the BG stepped in straight away. It's good to see these good reviews from some worthy papers. Reese is a lucky cupcake :D
Hey WDW! Love the video! The person shouting "you'll always be Bubble Boy to me" made me giggle! I have to say I prefer the "after" look - Jake looks good enough to eat whether he's going smart or scruffy but the beard goes better with the scruffy look imo:)
Great reviews of Rendition. I especially liked what the first one said about it staying with you long after it's finished. That was definitely the case for me. It's a shame more people weren't prepared to give it a chance when it was out but in the current climate it's not really surprising. I think in time though, it will get the recognition it deserves. In the meantime, now it's not in the cinemas anymore, can we have the DVD now please New Line?:)
Hey TL - love that Bubble boy line! I'm sure Jake can always get a laugh from his fans :D I like the after look too - such a sexy look.
I'm missing Rendition already too - definitely ready for the DVD.
Fascinated by the video! Bodyguard is being called also "officer K" - plain clothes co?, he seems to have some "status" - "here comes officer K" before they come out after the show - and the p.a. is really fast on her feet - and look at those big guys outside the studio door! my heart beats hard just thinking about what this must be like. gosh. think I'll have a glass of wine!
It is good Pia to think of these big sturdy men, ex officers perhaps looking after Jake for us :)
Right, I'm turning in now with a bit of BBM and a dollop of Irish whiskey - definitely ready to spend a bit of time up on the mountain.
Have a good evening/night everyone and I'll catch up with you tomorrow :D
How funny, I thought the guy said 'lover boy' but your right TL it's 'Bubble Boy' :)
Looking forward to the Rendition DVD too, can't wait to see the outtakes and such. Anything new with Jake is always a treat.
Wow. Thank you for that video, WDW! I feel overwhelmingly, absurdly proud of Jake. He handles everything with such perfect grace. *big siiiiiiiigh*
And I loved the videographer's comment at the end...something about all those people having shouted "dumbass questions." LOL! At least he wasn't one of them.
It occurs to me that Mr. K may just be the moniker for a guy who always follows Mr. J(ake). Who knows? ;)
I don't know if it's been brought up, but I think that a more serious subject matter in a film causes people to forgo the theatre and view the Dvd instead, a la "in the privacy of your own home." I know that I prefer not to have my raw emotions splayed out in front of 200 strangers, so I avoid large theatre presentations of films that will trigger my crying reflex. And I'm sure I'm not the only one who feels this way.
I like watching a film on Dvd because I have the ability to go back if I misunderstand a line or didn't quite catch a visual. You can't do that in the theatre. Plus I don't have to be bothered by other people talking and cell phones ringing, etc.
Don't count Rendition out just yet, as it will most likely take off like fire when it's released on Dvd. And it has a good chance at the Golden Globes and the Oscars (Zodiac, even more so). ;)
Thanks for the video WDW, you're like a real bloodhound when it comes to Jake...;)
That made me rethink about what we missed in Rome though...:(
I hope that Rendition, and most of all Jake, will get some rewards for all the wonderful job done...
And I think he should be rewarded for his acting in Zodiac too...
You hearing me, Academy? ;)
Hi, I love this blog but would take issue with the idea that people who haven't seen 'Lions for Lambs' would prefer 'not to know'. Some of the sharpest criticism of these sorts of films have come from papers with the greatest interest in world affairs and geo-politics. Often reviewers seem disappointed that the politics is dumbed down or else dealt with such false balance that it robs the film of critical weight. I think the Guardian called LfL " even-handed to the point of tedium"
Although I like Rendition, I think it's the case that we don't have the directors, actors and studios with the vision and drive to bring us the same sorts of fantastic films that came out of Vietnam. Maybe it will take time for a visual language to develop that can deal with such complexity.
I would say, though, that films may have a role to play in the dissemination of ideas, but if an individual chooses not to watch something, it should not pressuppose a desire for ignorance.
That's just my 2p's worth.
Morning everyone - thank you for the comments overninght, and some interesting comments about Rendition and Lion for the Lambs, thanks for those - I'm looking forward to being able to respond later on. Glad you all liked the video and that we now have a name for BG :D Have a good Tuesday :D
gho, you forgot one very important fact about DVD, it gives us the opportunity to view a very special Jake scene over and over again, sometimes 10 or more times if need be, in the privacy of your home, under your own control. I also have the ability on my DVD to slow-mo and still and most importantly magnify. Gotta love technology.
I don't know if it's been brought up, but I think that a more serious subject matter in a film causes people to forgo the theatre and view the Dvd instead, a la "in the privacy of your own home."
An interesting thought, gho, but I would say I have never purposely not seen a film in the cinema for this reason. I adore going to the cinema, and it bothers me not a jot to have my raw emotions on show in front of other people when I'm affected by a film - BBM being a case in point for me. Going to the cinema is a wonderful experience, regardless of what kind of film you go to see.
Although I do have to go with CWG's thoughts on watching a film at home....the ability to slo-mo and pause are major advancements in the interests of enjoying a film in more finer detail.
It's a very miserable day here in the North of England. A perfect day to snuggle up at home and watch Jake films all day. Sadly I'm in work.
Lovely video, and the Bubbleboy yeller really made me laugh, and Mr K is taking good care of our lovely.
Have to say, I think I may have discovered something Jake's a bit rubbish at, I mean seriously, look at the autograph signing, he's just scrawling circles on the pages :)
Yeah but Christie soon you'll be jetting the globe :) I haven't had one of those rainy Jake days in a long time and it sounded so good.
Hi WDW.
Hello people,it is SO good to be here with you again from the comfort of my back bedroom on MY OWN PC! It's been a very long couple of weeks without Net access at home and has cost more than I anticipated on my mobile phone bill reading your great posts,WDW, and downloading everyone's comments each night. This blog is an expensive addiction when accessed via a cellphone =:-0
Just to hark back to a previous post,I have to agree that Jake and Heath were both robbed in terms of an Oscar for "Brokeback" as was the film as a whole and ecstatic as I was that BAFTA had the good taste, judgement and intelligence to award Jake the "Best Supporting Actor" mask,it would have made me happier still if they had given Heath the "Best Actor in a Leading Role". That would have given a delicious symmetry to that very special evening and I think it would have been an even happier occasion for Jake if Heath had got the nod from BAFTA too. Great actor as Philip Seymour Hoffman might be,Heath should have won by a mile for breathing life into Ennis and conspiring with Jake to have us ever spellbound and heartsick.
I can't wait for the "Rendition" DVD either and I'm sure sales of the DVD will more than make up for any shortcomings the film may have had with regard to Box Office figures. Despite some less than charitable reviews, there are many critics who have applauded it, as proved by the links you've posted for us here, WDW. With the passage of time and more careful consideration,I'm sure "Rendition" will get the recognition it deserves in the end.
I haven't read many critiques of "Lions For Lambs",but one particular comment stuck in my mind, from Christopher Tookey, an acclaimed British cinema critic who writes for the "Daily Mail". Rating it a "Turkey" he described "Lions for Lambs" as being "made for sheep,by donkeys"! Ouch!!
I loved the video of Jake arriving/leaving "Letterman" WDW and am similarly impressed by the conscientious way the BG does his job,but either my hearing's going or the people commenting off camera on the video were referring to not Mr or Officer K,but Mr and Officer Gay. I thought they were being sarcastic,as is the wont of Pap types, although maybe I misheard. Would somebody please go back and listen again and tell me whether I'm right or wrong?
There's certainly a plethora of Jake pap footage/photos on the Net recently, especially when he has RW in tow. It begs the question who's tipping off the Paps as to their whereabouts on so many occasions. I Really Wonder. Initially I think it's Rather Worrying ;-) Any other fans of cryptic crosswords out there? ;-)
I think I'm Rather Waffling, see you all later.....
Nadine - I heard 'Officer Gay" too Maybe 'Gaye' is his surname? Nothing wrong with our hearing. Right Wdw? ;)
Evening everyone :) First of, before saying anything, great to see Nadine fixed and running again *) Good to see you mate!
Hi Gho - I like this discussion of whether one can get more from a film in the privacy of your own home or on a big screen in the company of strangers. I love going to see blockbusters at the cinema (and then not bothring with the DVD) but I also love the whole cathartic experience of watching a weepie at the cinema. I'm a matinee person myself, going on my own, and just wallowing. But if I get to see Lions for Lambs then it will be on DVD. A film like that, which might be more difficult to follow (for me anyway), I want to be able to pause, rewind etc. I don't need the big cinema experience - I can cry watching Pirates of the Caribbean at the cinema ;)
Thanks again for that input bmg - I suppose it's easy to blame the audience when it's the film at fault. Although I would always deny that for Rendition. I haven't seen Lions for Lambs so I can't comment on that. But I also know I'll wait for the DVD for that - maybe I'm not alone?
CWG - that's a very good point about the rewind and go slow buttons - surely they were invented for Jake :D
Hey Agent Krycek - And yet Jake's autographs all look very similar, I think he's just quick and speedy at it. I know I treasure my autographs :D
Hi Christie :)
Nadine - I'm so glad you're up and running with us again, we've missed you. 'Made for sheep by donkeys' - ouch! I'll have to listen to the video again. And thank you for the laugh :D
Ruby What's cooking? ;)
Nadine, welcome back. I can imagine how hard it must have been not having your usual internet access, it would have driven me crazy if it were me.
I loved what you said about Heath winning "Best Actor" award, I agree. The night of the BAFTAS was so amazing, it was just BBM all night, and Heath winning would have made it absolutely perfect. At least he did get on stage to an accept an award, it just wasn't for him. I adored the way he accepted it, all shy and awkward, bless him.
CWG, you are right, I shouldn't really complain about the weather as soon I will be in Paris, although there are strikes about to bring the city to a stand still. Just in time for my visit, which is very thoughtful of them. No metros and no electricity, is the latest I have heard. I plan to take lots of thermal underwear and good walking boots.
Glad to see you back Nadine.
WDW, my thoughts exactly, made for Jake indeed.
Christie, strikes in Paris and NYC? Talk about perfect timing :)
And did you think someone who's Just Gorgeous was tipping the paps off when he was papped constantly from, oh about 2004 until this summer?
Hey Nadine!!! So good to see you back - I've missed you!
As for Officer K/Gay/Gaye I have to say when I watched the video I thought they were saying Gay but then I read evryone's comments about him being Mr K so I just assumed it was my hearing. Either way, I prefer his nickname Smiler that someone gave him here:D
Christie - strikes in France too? No electricity? Hopefully that won't effect the pastries.
Hi Nadine and UV :D I've had a chuckle, but let's leave this outside Pub WDW or they'll be no crisps and chips ;)
Evening Twisted Logic! Well, I suppose if there's doubt over BG's Letterman name then I guess we're back to Smiler ;)
Sorry,WDW. I just couldn't resist some contentious mischief, I forgot some people might be offended by it. Just blame it on me having been virtually incommunicado for 2 weeks!
No probs Nadine - just glad to have you back and wouldn't have you any other way :DDDD *
Thanks for the video and everything else, WDW! A special thanks for all the Maggie stuff you post.
The photographers (?) yelling Jake! Jake! must be one of the most annoying noises there is! I have to put the sound down when I watch these clips.:(
"You'll always be Bubble Boy to me!" Heheheheheh.
