Brothers winding down and The Night Before the Oscars

Many of us have been wondering when the filming of Brothers will finish but, thanks to this site, we can see that the cast and crew are now into their last two weeks of filming, at least in New Mexico (just look at those early starts). So shortly, from 12 February, there should be no more disruption for the residents and drivers of Los Alamos. I know that they've filmed at the golf course before, but the mind boggles at what they're to film at the local ice rink - ice skating?

An extra on the film, Mikie the Taliban, regularly posts bits and pieces about his experiences on the set. Today, he had this to say about filming with Tobey Maguire: 'I will say this about Tobey Maguire…he is really into what he does. On frist day on the set, I didn’t recognize him with his short beard as he walked by and said Hello, but later in the day he wasn’t as friendly as I was holding a gun on him. The next day he was in heavy ” injury” make up after a helicopter crash, and was also captured by our very own Taliban band (I was the drummer…just kidding), so he was in character most of the time. As a rule, extras do not engage major talent in any way, even direct eye contact. Try that with Val Kilmer and see what happens…!'

The Night Before the Oscars

The night before the Oscars a charity event, called The Night Before, is held to raise money for the Motion Picture and Television Fund; in other words, it will help many of the people who have lost their jobs because of the writer's strike. It's a private affair, free of press, but it's glitzy and it's been announced that, whatever may happen to the Oscars due to the strike, this event will go ahead.

Here is the list of stars who will be hosting the event on 23 February at The Beverly Hills Hotel: 'Jessica Alba, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Capshaw Spielberg & Steven Spielberg, Nancy & Steve Carell, George Clooney, Cameron Diaz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx, Jake Gyllenhaal, Kate Hudson, Hugh Jackman, Scarlett Johansson, Tobey Maguire, Jessica & Jerry Seinfeld, Hilary Swank, Christine Taylor & Ben Stiller, Justin Timberlake, Rita Wilson & Tom Hanks, Kate Winslet & Sam Menndes, Renee Zellweger, Catherine Zeta-Jones & Michael Douglas.' There's a name there that catches my attention - I'll give you three guesses...

The writer's strike continues and the star support for the strike continues. Maggie Gyllenhaal's support has been expressed through this video. Maggie's video is No 34.

And finally...

When anyone mentions blue eyes, it's Jake I think of as having the perfect example, and it seems Jake may be related to many of us - a report today says that all blue-eyed people may have had a common ancestor - and possibly a Neanderthal ancestor at that. I did like the title of this article, which calls blue-eyed people 'inbred mutants'. Judging by these blue eyes, I would take that as a compliment.

Hi WDW, great post as usual. If this is the end of the filming, it will give Jake a complete break away from everything, I hope so. He will need it. I've just read the statement from Michelle Williams, and it just broke my heart. :(

I watched the original version of "Brothers" last night. I know now what the ice-skating rink refers to. ;) I can see Jake in this film, completely.

I saw Maggie's film today, wow. She's a clever and sassy woman.

It will be interesting how the Oscars plan to honour Heath, especially with Jake on presenting duty. After reading Michelle's statement, my heads in a whirl about it all, so god knows how those who knew and loved him well feel. My heart goes out to them all.

Sigh, blogger ate my comment...

Hi Rosie. Thanks so much for not revealing anything about the ice skating reference - I'm refusing to have anything to do with the original film until after I've seen Jake's. Amazing you saw it just last night.

I wonder if Jake will be presenting at the Oscars this year. I suspect that after his complete absence last year he will.

My heart goes out to them all as well, especially Michelle.

Christie Jake is hosting a party the night before we don't know if he will actually present at the Oscars.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon, I suspect he will but we have no way of knowing at this stage.

Sorry about getting the story wrong on Jake on the night before the oscars, thanks for correcting me! It will be interesting to see what happens anyway.

Nothing to apologise for, Christie :) I think Jake may very well be on presenting duty. I miss him and it'll be good to see him.

I am dreading if the oscar people will come up with idea to have Jake to introduce the "in memorial" section this year...

but it's good to hear that Brothers is close to wrap-up. Hopefully Jake can take a nice break.

interesting about the blue-eyed heritage theory... do you feel even closer to Jake now?

Great post. my heart goes out to Michelle as well.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird - surely they wouldn't get Jake to introduce that section? I trust not. I just can't wait for Jake to get on with the Moon Project.

Jake truly does blue eyes justice, that's fore sure.

I feel for Michelle too after reading that.

In the piece I read re: Michelle's statement, there is a beautiful picture of Michelle and child, who is, indeed, spitting image of Heath. hey let's hear it for the babies! go, babies, go!

what a great post! I viewed all of the writer's strike pieces, they are VERY moving - and clever. Don't miss Woody Allen, y'all. Ive earmarked the site. thank you so much! Maggie, I love her! I adore her! I love Jake and Maggie's naughtiness, as well as their artistry. May they always make mischief!

O WDW why are you such a purist! (wont watch Brode - boooo to youuuu) O well, I can be zippy longstocking when I have to be. I guess.

News from Los Alamos - yay!

We will survive.

How're you feeling, WDW and other sickies? Its been sleety all day, cant even go out of the house, so this delicious post was most welcome!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia - that's a great recommendation, I'll watch Woody's. I've only seen a couple. I love the site. Like the mischief :D

Nope I will not watch Brode so you've got to stay zipped until December 4! But I'm getting the hint that the ice skating scene involves Jake so we'll need your weather forecasts next week ;)

It's very cold here, with snow on the way. Very coldy and no appetite for anything other than Jake and chocolate. Keep warm.

Anonymous said...

Jake and chocolate. Maybe some single malt. that's all I need and all I need to need. apologies to John Keats who was feverish from TB and, I hear, liked his red. but there was no Jake, back then. that's not what I call living.

Anonymous said...

Oh Jake, alcohol, chocolate... *drifts away* OT:Just finished watching Vanity Fair with Reese Witherspoon aka the luckiest woman in the world. I couldn't figure out what colour her eyes were/are. Very pretty girl. Very girly girl. I liked her.

Oh for a beaker full of the warm south ... something about bubbles beading at the brim ummm the bashful something? Oh I give up, pia :)

Thanks as usual WDW - I hope you're on the mend.

Michelle's statement is so sad :(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon, I definitely get the idea that you liked her! I love Vanity Fair, I've never seen the film but the book is one of my all time favourites.

Hey Pia, Poor old Keats, no Jake... I can sympathise with the feverish thing. Good idea about the single malt :D

Where can I find Mchelle's statement?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anouska - I know how much you love Keats. 'Bubbles beading at the brim' - wouldn't mind some of that. Thanks, I'm extremely ugly in my sickness.

Michelle's statement was so dignified and sad.

Good to know Brothers is finishing up. I hope Jake can get a break after that. Although nice to hear he is part of pre-Oscar festivities.

WDW, hope you feel better soon. Glad it is the weekend!

Oh Michelle's statement was so beautiful yet so very heartbreaking. My heart goes out to her and Matilda. :(

Maggie's film is very clever and cheeky, lol. Love her too.

Signing off from a horribly rainy day here...

the latest picture of Michelle and child made me all goopy - I think Jake wants babies. who doesnt? cant he have them by, like, photosynthesis, or something?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia, that's a beautiful picture, for sure. Time for another glass of vino...

Thanks for the info about "Brothers", WDW. But I do have a question... Is the filming of "Brothers" winding down in 2 weeks, or will they just move out of Los Alamos and into a different location somewhere in New Mexico? I did a speed-read of the announcement, so if I missed something saying that this is indeed the final 2 weeks of shooting the film, then I apologize in advance for the query!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi tpe - I really don't know. It certainly looks like the filming is moving out of Los Almos on the 12th but I don't know if that's the end of it or not. Of course, there could be more filming in the studio or elsewhere in NM. But we expected filming to be over by the middle of February so maybe that is it. So what I'm saying is, in a very round about kind of way... I don't know!

Hey WDW,hello peeps. This weary inbred mutant isn't up to much of a comment tonight...save to say how much Michelle's statement moved me and that I wish her calm amid the maelstrom. Having Matilda,a little vision of her Daddy, must be comforting and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Rest easy,((Heath)) and all who mourn him still...

See you all tomorrow,sleep well...

Thanks for the info about the filming of Brothers. I was wondering if they had finished it. I thought it was supposed to finish by mid or late Jan I guess they had other plans.

I also wonder, I heard there was a charity give away, a lunch with Jake on the set for a new movie he is filming in March or Apri? I have no other details.

OH and thanks for the info about blue eyed people. SO me and Jake are related? ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi fellow inbred mutant Nadine - thanks for that. Rest easy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Trekfan - so we're related too! I never found out what happened with the second auctioned lunch. It's difficult to know what's happening with Brothers because they have the two scenarios, with obey and then with Jake.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning all - hope everyone has a good day :)

Relatively seen.

What are the roots of Jake? H has sometimes said that he is of Swedish origin; ”my father is Swedish” etcetera. Here is a sort of family tree:

Father; Stephen Roark,
grandfather: Hugh Anders,
great grandfather Leonard Efraim,
great-great grandfather: Anders Leonard (1842-1905) emigrated to the USA in 1866,
great great-great grandfather, Fredrik Leonard (1802-1873),
great-great great-great grandfather: Leonard Gyllenhal (1752-1840), pupil of Linné, entomologist, the only one with that spelling),
great great-great great-great grandfather Hans Reinhold (1724-1796),
great-great great-great great-great grandfather: Abraham Rudolf (1694-1743),
great great-great great-great great-great grandfather: Hans (1655-1710),
great-great great-great great-great great-great grandfather: Nils Gunnarsson Haal, nob. Gyllenhaal 1652, (dead 1680/81),
great great-great great-great great-great great-great grandfather: Gunne Olofsson Haal (mentioned being alive between 1614 and 1634)

More about the family on www.gyllenhaal.org. made by a first cousin of Jake's father, Ed Gyllenhaal

And yet Jake prefers matzo balls to swedish meat balls! (although those yummy fragrant buns filled with almond paste and whippeed cream would float my boat, in warm milk, to boot. but, on the other hand we want our Jakey to stay trim.)

Hi, Herman

Jake's Great-great-grandfather, Fredrik Leonard Gyllenhaal, married Christina Lovisa Westling, who was descended from William Fleetwood of Cranford, Middlesex.

Fleetwood is also an ancestor of Princess Diana and her sons William and Harry. Therefore, Jake and Maggie are 13th cousins of British royalty. :-)

Jake isn't known as "The Precious" for nothing! ;-)

What about Jake's Jewish origins on his mother's side? I've read somewhere he is of Russian-Jewish descent. Now, this would be extremely interesting. What a beautiful mixture Jacob Benjamin is...

Anonymous said...

O I agree he is a totally beautiful mixture of a man - and let's hear it for Naomi's background -

I find the concept of royalty being "precious" repugnant, though. Thot we USAans were in agreement on this point. Guess not!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone. Mr WDW is forcing me to drink medicinal whiskey...

Thanks for that, Herman, and for the link.

Hi Pia, matzo balls are a mystery to me - are they veggie?

Thanks Paul. I did hear once that everyone in Britain is descended from Edward III...

Hey Anon - a beautiful mixture indeed :) Like you and Pia, I'd love to know more about that side of Jake too.

I'm in agreement with you PIA. It's way past time we got rid, imo.

Hi WDW and everyone. I've schlepped round the shops today trying on clothes and am now thoroughly miserable. It's a little early for whisky for me, medicinal or otherwise, but a cup of tea will do for now.

Anonymous said...

MR WDW is forcing you to drink single malt whiskey, right. okay.
glad you're being cared for. :)

Matzo balls are dumplings, made out of matzo meal, eggs, chicken fat (yiddish word is schmaltz, I guess German word, too) and seasonings, dropped into hot chicken broth to cook and serve with chicken soup which would be GOOD FOR YOU RIGHT NOW although the whiskey might work.

They can be heavenly or simply so-so - have never been able to find Jewish cuisine that rivaled the kitchens of my two Jewish mother-in-laws. Naomi seems to eat out alot, but Jake says she makes a mean carrot-cake.

The Brothers schedule seems to indicate that crew and actors can be back in CA to vote in election primary on Tuesday which is also Mardi Gras and party time.
