Dining with Jake - WDW Road Trip reaches Santa Monica and another near miss

The WDW LA Road Trip today reached Santa Monica and Venice, giving me the opportunity to seek out Jake's favourite cafes and restaurants in this area in person (it's a hard job, I realise) and do one of my Dining with the Gyllenhaals features. Admittedly, no Gyllenhaals were actually present during the creation of this post, but one, namely Jake, has been seen at each at some time or other. I didn't go in all of these myself because there is a limit to how many coffees and smoothies I can drink in one day.

First up was Cafe Montana on Montana Avenue, a very lovely street which finishes at the Pacific Ocean, just to the south west of Brentwood. I was particularly mesmerised by The Wagging Tail dog store, which seemed to be selling some kind of outfits for paparazzi dogs. Cafe Montana was very empty and seemed more like a restaurant, so it didn't seem like a good place for 10am, although the reviews of this cafe indicate it's a good choice for those hungrier times of the day.

A little further down the hill towards the ocean on Montana Avenue was Caffe Luxxe. This cafe was buzzing and specialised in what I was in need of - coffee - and so I went in this one. Everything inside was the colour of a Latte and they sold no orange juice, just 'organic soda'. This cafe, and its popularity with Jake and Reese, is a subject in this week's OK magazine. The manager told the magazine that 'They're regulars, and they have their regular order - coffees and pastries.' This isn't a big surprise because I couldn't see that they sold anything else but the atmosphere was good and the staff were extremely friendly and knew many of the customers. If I lived there (in my dreams) I'd be a regular too. And when you walk out of there, fuelled by good coffee, look down the hill and see the ocean and palm trees, it puts a spring in your step.

Next stop - via the Santa Monica Farmer's Market, the promenade along the ocean and lunch on the pier - was Urth Cafe on Main Street, Venice. I don't know if Jake's ever been to this Urth but we know how much Jake enjoys the cafes on Beverley Drive and Melrose, so it's better than possible and gives me a good excuse to post a link to the Urth website. I had a large orange juice - freshly squeezed in front of me - and it was so large it contained the oranges of an entire orchard - a bit like the one Jake has here.

After quite a walk, Main Street became Abbot Kinney Boulevard at a point very close to the place where Jake encountered the little white dog. This is also the location of Axe, which is pronounced, for some reason, 'Ah-shay'. Just as well I knew this as I had to ask directions because Axe was very discrete, dark and quiet - and shut. The menu looked wonderful and mixed. By this point, I realised I had a very long walk back.

Just missed Jake again

There was a sighting of Jake yesterday at a 'trendy house wares store' on Beverly Boulevard, Beverly Hills. My hotel is off Beverly Boulevard and yesterday I was driven along its length, little knowing that while I had been at Disneyland, Jake had been shopping for household goods close to my hotel. To quote one of my favourite sayings 'Strange old world'. This has prompted a gratuitous photo of Jake shopping.

Includes pictures from IHJ, Flynetonline and WDW.

I feel in my bones that before the week is out, you will come face to face with our fresh-faced boy wonder WDW.

Hi! Well I hope you're right :D My time is running out and I just keep missing him! It's so strange knowing that Jake is about on these streets but my time is so short - all part of the adventure, I suppose. Thanks for commenting and welcome :D

Oh WDW! All those blue skies and green trees are a sight for sore eyes in these foggy boring winter days over here. a little bumping into Jake and it all would be perfect, I'll keep my finger crossed...;)

I don't know if you can do anything of that and if you read this already but I just found this article :

http://www.dailyemerald.com/news/2008/02/28/Pulse/feasting.On.A.Dream-3240212.shtml

There's a cute mention of Brothers since the young actress in the article plays a Jake's character flirt (maybe a little more than a flirt ;)) in the movie.

i think it's a cool trip, even if you didn't get to meet the REAL deal :) but I wish you luck. And if you do - we'll be cheering across the Atlantic ocean for you.

sometimes when i looked at those pictures, I wonder if you need lots of fluid to survive in LA, there's always multiple drinks: juice, water, coffee... i hope the bathroom there is clean and tidy, cos I'd be going there all the time, if I drink like Jake does.

I really hope you get to see Jake this trip WDW. It must be so exciting going to all the places you know he frequents, and to know that Jake was SO close to your hotel yesterday. I'm loving all your pictures. Thank you!

The article in The Daily Emerald, Oregon, cites the actress, Jenny Wade, whose character initially started "making out" with Jake's character, mentions that "Brothers" will have its première in December. Is that any news or not?

Speaking of "Luxxe Café"

"For breakfast, and a sighting of celeb, particularly Patrick Dempsey, head to Montana. I've seen him multiple times at Blue Plate and Cafe Montana. If Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal float her boat, do an Italian espresso breakfast to start at Cafe Luxxe; the couple is there often."

Frome here:

Good luck and keeping my fingers crossed for your bumping into him....

@Herman - yes the premiere will be on Dec. 4th. But I am hoping for the filmfestivals in Venice and/or Toronto. Cannes is too early, unfortunatly....

I am praying/hoping/dying for a "Brothers" premiere in London film festival, 15-30 October this year.

I don't know if they can make it in time for Venice, which is late August/early Sep?

WDW I believe these near misses are some kind of spiritual discipline, sorta like the chicken pox immunization.

p.x. classy selection of pictures as usual.

"I don't know if they can make it in time for Venice, which is late August/early Sep?"

"Rendition" with nearly the same time table was ready for Toronto (early Sep) last year....

Morning/afternoon everyone!

Thanks for the link, Xenia, that's great! Love to hear that Jake's a-flirtin in Brothers :D

Morning Winterbird - I feel that after this trip I may not be able to cope with certain drinks again. I know Jake loves orange juice and the air's so dry you can gulp gallons of the stuff down - too much for me. And the smoothies are huge! I haven't yet walked around carrying a coffee a la Jake - I must correct that.

Hi Rosie - good to see you - I'm glad you're enjoying the pics and posts. I have had a lot of fun doing them.

The release date, herman, is set for Dec 4 in the US.

Hi Anon - thanks for the link. I had an amazingly good Latte in there, sitting by the window keeping my eyes peeled but alas in vain!

Winterbird - I am so with you praying for a London FF gala - the timing would fit well. I think it could be ready for Venice, but probably - as Anon 14:27 says - Toronto is more likely.

Hey Pia - you're right, maybe this is just to get me back in training for the Brothers red carpet season - a pleasant thought.

Have a good day everyone - I've got to think where to hang out today!

Sounds like you had a great day, WDW! Sun, sea, sexy surfers and freshly squeezed orange juice...What more could you want? Apart from Jake to stop playing hide and seek with you, of course! Good luck for today:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL - good to see you :D It really is too gorgeous here - I can see why Jake loves it. Problem is he likes too much of it and he's zapping all over the place! I can also see why Jake drives and doesn't take the bus...

Thanks for the good luck - two days left.... Hope you're having a good day. :D

Jake sighting at CAA's pre-Oscar party!

Star-struck

That would be Terry Wayne Jones and Tina Pyne, who were in Beverly Hills Friday night for a pre-Oscars party at the home of her chum Bryan Lourd, a honcho with Creative Artists Agency.
The Houston duo rubbed elbows with George Clooney, Ellen Barkin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon, Kate Hudson, Jennifer Aniston, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Owen Wilson and on and on until we were absolutely green with envy!

well, finally, she's awake!

my advice - let HIM do the looking, for a change. you must go shopping and buy some great stuff. why not go down to Tijuana while you're in the neighborhood?

twistedlogic said...

Hi WDW! It certainly sounds gorgeous judging by your posts. I might have to tag along next time;) Actually we should all go and hopefully between us we can track our man down:). Waiting for a plumber to sort out a faulty boiler atm - the glamour never ends!

Anonymous said...

WDW,

check your email (the email associated with the blog).

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - thanks for the link! I heard about the party and was wondering if Jake had been there :D

Yeah, I'm awake Pia :D I'm going to have a rambling kind of day today, touring the cafes, bars and shops of BH, whilst also trying to develop eyes in the back of my head.

TL - yes, we should all come out on a coordinated mission :D Bad luck about the boiler :(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon - I checked and I answered xx

WDW another awesome travelogue! You really did get the flavor of Jake's Santa Monica. I wish I could have joined you and gone to some of those yummy restaurants and had some of the yummy drinks. :)

Jake was just near you again at a housewares store?!? Alright we have to step up our vibes to Jake to be in the same place at the same time as you.

I love that last picture too because that is the NYC
Kiehl's store. I recognize the products and the skeleton. ;) They have the most amazing bath and body products.

Thanks for all the links and sightings everyone!

Anonymous said...

FYI Kiehl's

Btw, I was wondering if Jake had been at the CAA party. Makes sense that he would have been.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Get Real! Thanks so much for telling me where that pic was taken - it's one of my favourite photos of Jake - noone wears a hat like he does! I love shops like that too, not that I can ever afford anything in them :D Definitely makes sense, Jake being at the party, no wonder he looked a little tired at the party the next night.

If you really want to run into Jake, WDW, here is what you should do: give out disinformation. Jake's people can easily check out your itinerary by reading your blog, so Jake knows where *not* to go on any particular day ;-) .

You announced that you would be in Disneyland yesterday, so Jake knew the coast would be clear for buying housewares. :-)

By the way, I am so horribly sick of winter by now that I love your photos of beaches and palm trees. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul - that's funny! It's like a game or, as Jake would say, a dance. I'll try your tactic and stay zipped for today's plan!

I am so glad you like the photos of summer - that's made my day thanks :D

Anonymous said...

Your welcome WDW. It is one of my fave pics too. I know that store well, lol. And Jake does know how to wear a hat!

I'm with Paul loving your pics of the beautiful LA sunshine.

Promising!

Herman, thanks for the link. Can you please just link articles and not quote the whole thing? I've amended your comment accordingly.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! It's great knowing that you have shops in common with Jake. I'm so glad you like the pics :D

Anonymous said...

Do they still sell maps to the stars homes? You could ask before you buy if it includes Jake's address, and then just go ring his doorbell! You only have two days left, right? Watch out for a big German Shepherd dog though!! (I know they used to sell such things a few years ago, but I don't know if their still available)

Anonymous said...

Got the point about shortening the Dark Knight entry. But why not keep the link like this ?

Anonymous said...

Bring me a big bone and some toys, will ya? And I sure hope ya like to play a lotta fetch (me running, you throwin, then we switch) and let's do some roughhouse wrestling. Oh and be prepared to pet and brush me for hours. But first, bring me some good toys (the fun ones, none of that educational crap) and some juicy delicious treats (juicy as in T-Bone steaks), and then we'll talk about Atti's Daddy. And the things I can tell you...WOOF!!!

BirdGirl said...

Have a good day in LA WDW. I think today might be the day. Good idea keeping your itinerary secret. You never know. :)

The man sure does like to shop doesn't he?

Anonymous said...

you know when your NOT looking for someone is the time you will run into him. How long will you be in Calif? You still have time to bump into him. He looked cute in the knitted hat. What are the temps like? Is it chilly?

I am glad you are having a good time. I know it has to be warmer than VA

But I don't need any freakin housewares. :(

WDW sounds like she'd be real good shopping for me. Hey WDW, do ya need me to make ya a list?

Anonymous said...

Trekfan, that picture of Jake in the knit cap is a few years old.

6 p.m. sun has just set behind the mountains. 3 p.m. in the city of angels, where are our angels?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone :D Made it back to the hotel - absolutely worn out! I think I've worn an inch at least off my legs and now I can only hobble. Jake's done another excellent job at hiding from me!

Hey Anon 19:12 - good tip! They have those maps all over the place and one I saw had Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's house on it so I'm not that sure they're up to date! But seriously though I'd never be so bold. I like Jake on red carpets (well, any coloured carpet to be honest ;)), but I wouldn't say no to a cafe! I've been keeping my eyes peeled for a German Shephard with a floppy ear. Atti would stand out amongst all these ornamental dogs.

Hey Atticus! I'll give you all the attention and treats in the world if you'd let me play with your daddy ;D Deal?

Hi Bird Girl! I love a man who shops and is into cafe culture. Hope you had a good day :)

Hi Trekfan - I've only one full day left now so I think my luck's out but it's been so good. I can't believe this hot sunshine - and neither can my peeling nose...

Pia, good to see you. Sorry I missed you. Not long to go now :)

Anonymous said...

I'll give you all the attention and treats in the world if you'd let me play with your daddy

GRRRRRR. Play? Whadda ya mean play? Don't you be tryin to get my Daddy to play all my 'fun games with balls' with you. He only plays fetch with me, Missy.
