The Night Before Party at the Beverly Hills Hotel - WDW Report

Tonight's post is a personal post about what it's like when you try and see Jake, thousands of miles from home and without any hope that you may actually see the person you came for. Tonight, I tried to see Jake at The Night Before party at the glamorous Beverly Hills Hotel. I spoke to more than a few people tonight - staff and guests at the hotel - and all agreed that this year's party and this year's Oscars were different. Nobody was quite so keen on the fan being involved.

At the Beverly Hills Hotel it was extremely difficult getting into the hotel, let alone seeing anything. I arrived early as I had an idea of what it would be like. I got there at about 3pm and walked through the gorgeous hotel bungalows, with the red flowers and the meandering pathways. What a stunning place to stay! I could see why Brad Pitt etc would stay nowhere else. I got lost around the tennis courts but a member of staff took me to the lobby and I managed to get into the Polo Lounge before they closed it.

Because of the rain, the Night Before party couldn't be held at the pool as planned. Instead, it was moved into the small second bar. I was early enough to get into the Polo Lounge and set up a position on a bar stool to see what might happen. All credit to Greg the barman - what an amazing guy - holding fort on his own with the crowds increasing. He told me that he'd seen Tom Cruise that morning, proudly walking around with his baby in his arms and having breakfast with her. Greg said that some stars had been in for lunch but now they were out having their massages and manicures before this evening's party.

I spent much of the evening chatting away with bar staff and guests, each taking their turn to try and have a look around the lobby. This wasn't easy. A mass of security guards manned the entrance. At one point I was chatting to a party of four (all with strict instructions to look out for Jake) and one of them went out to the lobby to see what was going on. She was not allowed back in so, after a frantic text message or two, all left to try and find her. The toilet block was sealed so that the 'special' guests could use it, leaving the rest of us to use the washroom downstairs, but soon even this restroom had a man at its door.

But then Nicole Kidman walked into the restaurant looking extremely radiant and with a neck longer than I could believe. Absolutely stunning. Her blonde hair was lifted up and tied with a clip. She sat a few feet from me and for a couple of hours I could see her having a very animated discussion with two other guests. As she walked out the entire bar looked at her. A real movie star. A very handsome producer came to the bar and was waylaid by quite a few ladies but he made his escape.

Finally, I realised that I was never going to see anything. The party was probably underway and the stars were being kept so segregated from everybody else - guests or otherwise - that there was little chance. Also the bar was extremely full and I was being chatted up by a transport millionaire from Detroit, who 'used to be in the movie business'. Time to escape, believe me.

On the way outside from the bathroom I peeked into the small sushi restaurant and there was Neil Gallagher from Oasis, chatting away and laughing with a friend. I went outside and hid behind a rail of drycleaned suits (the things I do), knowing I would be spotted at any moment. Finally, I got thrown out - I told them I was just waiting for a cab (I was the only non-member of staff around so I must have stood out) - but not before I saw Orlando Bloom getting out of his car. He looked really good - smart with a kind of goatie beard and slender. A totally different build to Jake. I didn't see Jake - I was unable to - but it was good to see someone. And just being in the same hotel as Jake has got to be good.

What a night!

Apart from this evening's adventure, I walked down Melrose today, stopping at Urth Cafe, to Fairfax and then went to the Grove and Farmer's Market. On the way, I saw some signs warning about no parking and I later found out that this place - the Pacific Design Center on Melrose - will be the site for tomorrow night's Elton John AIDS Foundation party. I also went to the Fred Segal shop - where Jake bought his Art is Alive shirts - and spent too much money. I later found out that Britney visited the shop with her mother this week. Other places I saw were JAR restaurant, the Beverly Center and Orsos.

nice story. sucks that the event is so securitied out now. i went a few yrs back and it was easy to hang in the lobby and watch celebs come and go. no one ever said anything to us.

Hi Anon - thanks for commenting; that's interesting. It's certainly not easy anymore. I was chatting to someone there and she said even this year you could hang around in the lobby.

But even though all of them were hired to keep all of us out, the bar staff and the security staff were very friendly and polite. I chatted to a big, burly security guy and he said he hated having to keep people out. Another member of the hotel staff kept saying 'Look what's happened to the Oscars, it's like an AA meeting.'

Someone else said that Tom Cruise was really friendly with everyone and was very happy to talk to anyone who talked to him, even while eating breakfast.

WDW, it all sounds so exciting and glamorous to me, even hiding in the coats. Especially hiding in the coats.

That transport millionaire ... I nearly snagged a property millionaire once, at a spa. The *minute* one steps away from the hubby all sorts of characters come out of the woodwork :D

A friend of ours was completely starstruck by seeing Nicole Kidman once at an event, he couldn't stop talking for days about how drop-dead gorgeous she was and what a real STAR.

So close to Jake!

Btw is there such a thing as sympathetic jet-lag? I slept most of yesterday.

Thx 4 the txts ** talk soon.

Great post, WDW. I'm glad you are having a good time so far. :*

Funny that you brought the rain with you to LA. Maybe it will clear up and give you and everyone some sunshine this week.

Ah, the Pink Lady and the Polo Lounge. I hung out there when I was, uh, underage (I had a fake ID but they never asked!). Can't say I remember very much though. lol

I don't understand all the fuss about the weird timezone. Seems fine to me. :D

So did you do the bunnyhop over to the rabbit and pet it?!

Anonymous said...

Hey gho, the rabbit on a leash is MINE :D *

I wondered how the owner would keep pace with it.

Aww, I'm sorry you didn't get to see Jake. =( But ahh! You did get to see Orlando! That's just as exciting! (At least it would be for me. LMAO) He's gorgeous in person, isn't he? *swoon* Thanks for your update, it was an interesting read! *hugs* Hopefully you'll see Jake while out & about in LA during your stay there. Good luck!

- Stephanie

I think you'll have more luck spotting Jake at his usual haunts then at hotels for parties. If you couldn't spot him at that Night Before thing, which was the only thing he would really do, if anything, then he is laying low and being "domestic." I've seen pictures of Jake and Reese out for breakfast, and also of Naomi Watts out food shopping at some place in Brentwood, I think, that looked rather rustic. Brownish/red wooden building, like and barn or an indoor farmer's market, bakery, etc. Also there are reports Reese is ill with flu.

I think it's mighty nice to go to places where Jake has been... even if you don't get to see him.

it's like an alternative way to see LA! (who needs tour guidebook?)

So, how big were Kidman's lips? Pictures over the last few days have her looking like a blowfish. Wonder if she's seen her kids yet. Second sighting of her at the Polo Lounge that I've read and neither times with her husband or kids.

Wow, how exciting WDW! Even though you didn't see Jake, it must have been amazing to see Nicole Kidman and Orlando Bloom, and all of Jake's favorite hang-outs. I have to say, seeing Noel Gallagher from Oasis would have gotten me for sure. Squeee! Have fun and good luck tonight! ;)

I have to say, seeing Noel Gallagher from Oasis would have gotten me for sure. Squeee!

Can I join you in that squeeing, Bertie? I was a big fan of Oasis back in the day.
Sorry you didn't get to see Jake, WDW, but thanks for telling us all about your evening, I loved reading your report. LOL at you hiding behind the coats :D There's still time to spot Jake elsewhere, you'll probably bump into him when you least expect it;)

Btw, I watched Rendition last night and just want to say a huge Thank You to Gavin Hood for including the deleted Jake scenes in the DVD. It's worth buying just for that alone:)

Anonymous said...

TL, weren't some of those deleted scenes great? I wish they'd left the Douglas' phone calls "sub plot" in, Isabella's scenes that showed how the emotional stress so disrupted their family life. I think they add a lot to the story. I agree with Gavin Hood (IMHO - I'm sure he'd be thrilled to know lol!) about the "escape" scene possibly being too much. I'm very glad I bought the DVD.

Noel Gallagher is my favorite Gallagher brother; Liam's too bratty I think! lol

twistedlogic said...

Hey Bertie! I was madly in love (or rather lust!) with Liam in the early days but the spoilt child attitude got tiresome pretty quick and I went off him. I love Noel though, not in a sexual way, but I would love to have a chat with him down the pub. I love his sense of humour:D

At least the one good thing about the phone call subplot not being in the movie is we can watch it all in one go without having to ff through the rest;) I think the ending worked better without Anwar's phone call to Isabella, so I'm with Gavin Hood on that one (I'm sure he'll sleep easier tonight knowing that too:D). I haven't watched the escape scene yet. I'm planning on watching it tonight after I've watched the movie with Gavin Hood's commentary:)

Morning everyone - could hardly sleep last night and now woken up to the sound of rain pouring down outside - what a lovely day for the Oscars ;)

Morning/afternoon Anouska :D Definitely one of the most glamorous events that I've ever been (almost) near to! I've seen lots of movie stars in person and without doubt Nicole Kidman is the most beautiful of all the female stars I've ever seen - very tall, walks like someone who's carrying a pile of books blanaced on her head! And she smiled at everyone and her skin was radiant. (And no, anon, she didn't look like a blowfish).

Thanks for sharing my jetlag, Anouska. You're definitely making it easier, although I had some last night.

Hey Gho - Good to see you! I'm counting on you providing me with some sun. I didn't pet the rabbit, although it was very fluffy, I got distracted by the man with his arms full of beagle puppies. I don't think beagle puppies and rabbits mix too well.

They had a full range of cocktails at the Polo Lounge which were named after the Oscar nominations for best film - I was very tempted by the Juno, not so much by There Will be Blood ;)

Hi Stephanie :D I would have loved to have seen Jake, but it was very exciting to see Orlando and he looked like he was in a good mood, all smiles. I thought of you when I saw him :D

Hi Anon 12:43 - I just love to see Jake at public events, here he puts himself 'on show' as it were. But last year, the day after the Oscars, I saw Leo di Caprio in BH so the stars are about.I'm sorry to hear that Reese may be sick. I'm going to head off to Brentwood later in the week - when here's some sun!

Hi Winterbird! You're right, it's a lot of fun, it fels like pure escapism, visiting places/eating in restaurants where stars go. This is the first time I've er blogged it and that's fun too!

Hi Bertie - it was a big thrill to see Noel and I did a triple take. I've been a fan of Oasis for years and I just didn't expect to see him!

Afternoon TL! I can't wait to see these deleted scenes - Mr WDW told me that my letter box was blocked with something from Playusa so it'll be great to watch those when I get home. Of course, if I'd have known it was gonna take so long I'd have just bought it here... ;) I don't like Liam much wither - Noel was always my favourite.

Have a good day everyone :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

TL - we're posting at the same time again! Now I really can't wait to see these scenes. I always thought it was good that the scenes in Washington and those in North Africa were kept totally separate - except for the calls between Douglas and his bosses.

To me Noel's all about London pubs not the Beverly Hills Hotel sushi bars but that's obviously just me as he looked like he was having a great time, chatting away.

Wow, WDW what a fantastic report! BHH sounds like a very luxe and beautiful place. Despite not seeing our guy you did have some very cool sightings. I am a fan of Oasis too. Have What's The Story Morning Glory on rotation on the iPod. I think Noel G. is very talented. Really like Orlando and Nicole does sound beautiful even if she has had a bit too much done to her face, imo. She is a great actress. From reports JJake was at the event.

The roster of celebrities attending the Night Before benefit brought out the world's biggest stars from film, television, music and sports. Seen at this year's party were: George Clooney, Tom Cruise & Katie Holmes, Kate Beckinsale, Steven Spielberg & Kate Capshaw, Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Aniston, Harrison Ford & Calista Flockhart, Ben Stiller, Jake Gyllenhaal, Will & Jada Pinkett Smith, Don Cheadle, Orlando Bloom, David & Courtney Cox Arquette, Donald Sutherland, Casey Affleck, Tommy Lee Jones, Elton John, Spike Lee, James McAvoy, Robert Duvall, Christian Slater, Heather Locklear, Tilda Swinton, Ron Howard, Warren Beatty, Josh Duhamel & Fergie, Tobey Maguire, Matt Dillon, Tom Hanks & Rita Wilson, George Lopez, Christina Applegate, Cher, Jaime Pressly, Meg Ryan and Josh Hartnett.

Morning Get Real :D - I just deleted my comment as it was complete rubbish! Thanks so much for the link :D I was so close and yet so far... Hope the weather's better where you are :\

Anonymous said...

Gotta admit tho, Liam's a looker and has a great voice - so I do love the bad boy, but Noel's my fave too as the main songwriter. ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I always thought Noel was the better looking one, Bertie ;)

And Get Real's another Oasis fan :D

Your comment was fine, WDW. :) Sorry the weather there is crappy rain. Hopefully it will clear up as it is only morning there. We are having a beautiful day here. Will be heading out soon. It has been yucky and now we have sun! Always makes me happy as I have that seasonal affectedness thing. I get down after to many crap weather days in a row. I need to recharge with some sun. I don't mind cold at all, like the seasons, but more than a day or two of bad weather and I get :(. Anyway, I hope it clears up there and you continue to have fun. I love that you start up conversations with people. ;)

I like Liam but there is something I really like about Noel. Besides being the songwriter I have seen him sing and I adore his version of Don't Look Back In Anger. I wish there new work got a bit more promotion and recognition.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real - I have that problem with winter days too - one reason why I like coming to California, but I wish I'd brought my brolly. I'm heading out too so see if I can get within a mile of the Kodak Theater :D I loved Noel's version of Look Back in Anger too. Have a good day :)

Have a great one, WDW! I am watching some very early Oscar coverage on E! and it looks like the rain has stopped. *Fingers crossed*

Btw, should have said "their new work..." in my post above.

Hey sweet peeps all. happy Sunday! Please keep us guys with no tv posted as to any streams we cam watch tonight.

Yay Robert Elswit after seeing the stuning There Will Be Blood and yay RDL, but gosh the plot klunky.

Watching Rendition in bits in between other obligations - good film! - Jake is fine -

Salon.com critics speaking of cinematography bemoaned absence of Zodiac as one of the finest.

All hail WDW, chatting it up with barkeeps and millionaires and yay for the view from behind coat racks.

I love your reports WDW..even if you didn't see Jake. Nicole Kidman sounds lovely, and seeing Orlando made up for it a little. I'm looking forward to more of this, it's great, you make it like we're there with you!

At B&N looking at new Interview Mag. Readers still talking about Jake.

"Are you listening, Hollywood?

Dear Interview,
What a pleasant surprise to see Jake Gyllenhaal on your October cover! He's played many types of roles and has been great in all of them, whether he's inspiring (October Sky), silly (Bubble Boy), haunted (Doonie Darko, The Good Girl), sensitive (Moonlight Mile), macho (Jarhead), or heartbreaking (Brokeback Mountain). However, the one project of Gyllenhaal's I'm most looking forward to is his (I hope) inevitable Brokeback sequel-preferably this time with a happy ending. Just imagine the possibilities!
Renee Newbold, Newport News, VA"

The begining of her comment I agree with but the last part is :(

New Interview Mag. has Ellen Page on the cover. Like her.

I'm singing in the rain
Just singing in the rain
What a glorious feelin'
I'm happy again
I'm laughing at clouds
So dark up above
The sun's in my heart
And I'm ready for love
Let the stormy clouds chase
Everyone from the place
Come on with the rain
I've a smile on my face
I walk down the lane
With a happy refrain
Just singin',
Singin' in the rain

Hi everyone - just got back to the hotel after a long, long walk right across Hollwood. And the rain's gone, at least for the time being. Good to see you all :D

Hi Pia! I've come back to watch the red carpet on TV so I'll chat through it :) I thought about staying at the red carpet itself but red carpets without Jake on them don't have the same appeal and don't bring out the same dedication in me to hang around for five hours. There was hardly any room to see anything there and I could tell it would get incredibly busy.

Rosie, I'm so glad you're enjoying the posts. I don't want to bore anyone!

Get Real - thanks for telling us about the letter. A Brokeback sequel with a happy ending? It was all going so well til then. I like Ellen Page too :)

Hey Pia - so far I've not seen a millionaire I fancied ;) It would definitely be good to have some shotgun riders, that's for sure. I'd love some pics of Jake - there are joggers everywhere and I just keep hoping.

Thanks very much Monica! No Jake but if he's not there I prefer to know it. I can just enjoy watching it on TV just as Jake probably will. I've got wine and crisps if he wants to join me ;)

Pia - for the moment you're keeping the rain at bay :)

Anonymous said...

Sounds like you had another fun day WDW. I know it is early there but I agree trying to be on the carpet must be crazy. So yes we can all share it together here. :) I am home now watching the pre-show on E!. The rain seems to have stopped but they smartly have the tents still up.

Hi Get Real! I see George has arrived :D

I'm just finishing off an Oscar post quickly...

Hey WDW, I love reading about your exploits in The Land of Jake - chatting with staff and guests, hiding amongst the drycleaning. :) It's fun, and is the next best thing to being there. Keep the stories and the pics coming, OK?

cool WDW I hope you do get to spot Jake at some point.
