Friends and mentors

Yesterday's post, which featured a very young Jake Gyllenhaal discussing his freshman year at Columbia University, reminded me that, although Jake left his college career behind, he continues to carry the legacy of his school, Harvard-Westlake. And his school continues to support him - his teacher Ted Walch has been there each step of the way.

In December 2004, Jake gave a talk at a Harvard-Westlake Entertainment Event (looking extremely Swoffy), which paid tribute to Walch's instruction while Walch revealed that he has attended each of Jake's film sets and premieres, ever since October Sky. He even visited London twice to see Jake on stage in This Is Our Youth. 'Jake always had his priorities straight, and certainly his heart is in the right place.'

This article also makes mention of Jarhead, which reminds me of something I recently learned. Jake had auditioned for Sam Mendes before - for the part of Ricky Fitts in American Beauty. Of course, he was unsuccessful (the role went to Wes Bentley) and, no doubt, this was in his mind when he auditioned for Swoff.

Jake appeared in Harvard-Westlake's chronicle again in 2006 when he received his Oscar nomination for Brokeback. Ted Walch said of Jake: 'When I went to the premiere of Brokeback, I felt at the time that Jake stood a very good chance of being nominated... He considers himself very lucky, and he handles his fame with a degree of humility that makes him all that much a nicer guy.' (And I like that this school paper is just as proud of another of its alumni, one who made it onto a series of Survivor.)

Harvard-Lake's pride in Jake and Brokeback Mountain is in stark contrast to the appalling reaction that Michelle Williams received from her school. 'Jim Hopson, Headmaster of Sante Fe Christian High School, said, "We don't want to have anything to do with her in relation to that movie." Hopson, whose school is located just outside San Diego, Calif., went on to say, "Michelle doesn't represent the values of this institution."'

As opposed to: 'Sharon Cuseo, a dean at the exclusive Harvard-Westlake School, says the school "embraces" Jake's 'Brokeback' success. Cuseo, who was Jake's counselor, says that the school has openly gay faculty who freely discuss gay issues with their students. Cuseo is a bit surprised that not a single parent has called to complain about Jake's role in the film. Quite the opposite; she says a number of parents have taken their children to see the movie. Ted Walch, Jake's acting coach at Harvard-Westlake, says he wasn't shocked at all that Jake took on the role. Walch says that Gyllenhaal's godparents are a gay couple and that Jake's family has always been open-minded.'

For a more detailed look at Walch's career and philosophy of teaching, read this article, which also mentions that Ted wrote in a limousine with Jake to the premiere of Moonlight Mile.

As this has put me in a Brokeback mood, here is a red carpet video of a very lovely tuxedoed Jake talking and laughing about the incredible success of Brokeback. 'Every love story needs an obstacle... and this is one of the last great obstacles.'

Maggie's style

With Maggie Gyllenhaal's visit to Paris Fashion Week, complete with Ramona and Naomi, we've been thinking about Maggie's distinct style. In an interview with the UK's Guardian today, Maggie discusses mixing fashion with motherhood and reveals that when she was at Harvard-Wetslake she modelled herself on Cyndi Lauper! Fashion was far more important then than boys.

And finally

I wanted to include a link to this article about an incredible young woman, Natalie Portman. Natalie actually has her own line of vegan shoes, amazing. Here is someone who has taken full advantage of her success and the opportunities open to her to learn about the world and give what she can back. No wonder she's been a friend of Jake's for such a long time. 'Portman has just completed her first film with Gyllenhaal, a remake of Susanne Bier's Danish film Brothers. "I've been friends with Jake a really long time, so that was really exciting," she says.'

Includes pictures from IHJ and Pop Sugar.

WOW! What a glorious post, WDW! It is thrilling to read more about Jake's trajectory, also Maggie's -
and Natalie Portman, who is actually FEATURED in today's Sunday NYTIMES.

And a new face in our Cast of Characters - Ted Walch! O high school mentors! Jake has been very fortunate, in his life, and, as it seems, not taken this good fortune for granted.

Still surprised that Maggie and Jake went to Columbia, I am so curious why, when there are colleges that have outstanding theatre departments, such as Kenyon, Northwestern, Yale. Just curious.

I like Maggie's view of style, and love to hear her talk. She's one of my favorite people, or, rather, celebs. I gather she has some good women friends - good for her! - and I laughed with delight when she spoke of sometimes being totally comfortable in
one's "baggy filth" -

Thanks for a wonderful post! Wont ask you how you do it, just sayin' thank you!

Morning Pia! I've just had to race out to the shops - whoever thought that shutting everything at 4pm on the dot was a good idea :(

So glad you liked the post. I got really intrested in this because Jake's said on more than one occasion that he has a mentor and it seems to be that Ted could well be that mentor. He's clearly helped Jake along fro the beginning and now is reaping the rewards of having such a star student - and one who is keeping his feet on the solid ground.

Jake has indeed been extremely fortunate - he's one of the lucky few who has a destiny he is making good.

I'm very surprised about Jake going to Columbia too. I wonder how much of it was following in Maggie's footsteps. It can't have been an easy couple of years and I empathise, especially having been to such an amazing high school.

I liked Maggie's description of her 'baggy filth' - my kinda look :D

Have a good Sunday :)

I guess Naomi is the Columbia connection as she went to Barnard, which is assoc with Columbia and Eric Foner is prof at Columbia, etcetc. Maybe.

Very interesting post WDW! I loved the picture of Jake and his teacher...I'd seen the smaller hatless pic...but not the other two. Very lovely shots.

I can't wait to see Natalie with Jake in Brothers either...it will be good to see them on screen together knowing they are such friends. Natalie seems like a lovely girl.

I can hardly believe the reaction of Michelle Williams school towards her role in BBM! My God. How appalling!

Thanks for letting me know about Maggies interview in the Guardian...I would have missed that..and finally...thanks for the video! You packed a lot in today!

Oh yes, I'd forgotten about Naomi's connection to Columbia :)

Hi Rosie - good to see you, so glad you liked the post. One of the advantages of being sick is that I pass the time Jakin :D

I'm really, really looking forward to seeing Natalie and Jake on the big screen together. A real treat's in store.

I was horrified when I read that about Michelle's school - all credit to her from breaking away from that kind of background. Also shows just how fortunate Jake and Maggie have been.

Anonymous said...

hey this is a really nice surprise! Very interesting post :)

Yeah i rememder reading that reaction from Michelle's school, it never ceases to amaze me how much those bigots can get away with in US. I just can't imagine an academic figure making such statement in Europe. Let's say, even if one really feel that way, he wouldnt dare to say it out loud. *sighs*

I wonder if Jake still needs to do Auditions now? Or maybe just an informal script-read? I always think Auditions are like interviews, it relies on the interviewer's ability as well to pick the right candidate, it 's not the perfect way.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird :D I know, you would really have thought that this was an opinion for that so-called academic to have kept to himself. What a moron.

I bet these days directors have a pretty good idea if they want Jake or not, and he must get the pick of the scripts, but I suppose they still have to do some kind of audition just to see if the part fits. Can't be good though. Jake's always said how bad he is at them.

i have a feeling that for jake and natalie on screen together will kick ass. it is probably werid for them...if they have a love/make out/sex scene. since they are professionals they probably handled it very well.

BirdGirl said...

Greetings all. Congrats on another fantastic post WDW. You never disappoint. ;)

I am also extremely excited about seeing Jake and Natalie on screen together. She has been my favorite actress since Garden State. I was elated to hear that they are such good friends.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi anon - there'll be such chemistry, I'm sure, and they really are true professionals. I reckon it was a pretty good experience for them both - I hope so. Thanks for commenting :D

Hi Bird Girl - Thanks! So are you putting Mr BG through TDAT tonight then? :) Natalie is one of my favourite actresses to. I'm hoping to see the new movie tomorrow. Yep, more time off work :D

Ruby said...

Great post WDW. How do you do it, time and again?!

I remember reading those comments from Michelle William's former headmaster. I also remember reading an interview with her mum and if my recollection is correct she said that the teacher in question barely knew Michelle and that other teachers at the school had said that they were proud of her.

Hope everyone is having a pleasant Sunday. We are bracing ourselves for big storms in the UK tonight.

Ruby said...

Forgot to say, I love Natalie. I'm so pleased that she and Jake have done a movie together.

Mr R likes her too. He wants to see the movie The Other Boleyn Girl because it has Natalie and Scarlett Johannsen in corsets!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Ruby and Ruby's new laptop :D I do it cos I'm loupy.

That's good to know, that Michelle did have some support from other teachers. I'd never heard any of this before and I wasn't impressed.

I'm batoning down the hatches here - I hear it's going to be bad in the west. Hope you're having a good night :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Did Mr R like the film - as I'm seeing it tomorrow. Strangely, Mr WDW's eyes light up too when the trailers come on the TV. I do like Natalie :D

Anonymous said...

Mr A just complains about the American pronunciation of Boleyn :D
I think it could be a cover for admiring Nat and Scarlett, though :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anouska :D - how does the film pronounce Boleyn? I am looking forward to seeing it.

Anonymous said...

so its not bowl-INN?

anyone seen Goya's Ghosts - Natalie and yum yum Javier Bardem.
just put it on my netflix list, becuz of both of 'em. I have a fhing of late about Javier "persuading" Jake to the Canary Islands where they will work on a film about Lorca.

Anouska your next soiree will you -please ask Philip Glass, Leonard Cohen, Javier Bardem and Jarvier's mom. Of course Jake. Jake's mom is okay, too. Chris. Portman. etcetc and etc.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia - over here it's pronouced Bow (as in toe) - lin.

I don't know about Javier - obviously a good actor but he doesn't make me swoon at all. Be good to see him in a film with Jake though :D That sounds like a great soiree list - I'll sit in the corner and Jake can make me martinis :)

Anonymous said...

I'm intrigued as to why Javier's mum is invited, but fine, Pia - LC is always a shoo-in at my soirees as you know :):)*

Film says BOW-linn and it's more like Be'lin or even Bullen if you're being really Tudor-fabulous.

I realise I'm contradicting our hostess but since we often contradict each other I don't 'spect she'll mind :):)

Anonymous said...

Etc etc always a shoo-in too * :D

Javier is hot property right now after the oscar win. I haven't watched Goya's Ghosts, but he was excellent in "Before Night Falls". He's in the next Woody Allen film (with Scarlett Johannson, of course) and Penelope Cruz... that's good enough reason for all our "Mr" to watch an Allen film, I guess... :P

Actually, i kind of fancy Jake to be in a Woody Allen film....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Anouska - willing to disagree on this too ;) Nan Bullen was Anne's nickname. But I'm going with the film's pronunciation.

Hi Winterbird - y'know, I quite fancy watching Jake in a smart comedy too and Allen is the right mix, for me, of verbal and visual humour. I'd like to see Jake do a film that's really clever and makes me laugh out loud.

Anonymous said...

Before Night Falls was great, winterbird.

Anonymous said...

Before Night Falls was great, winterbird.

I agree! it's a wonder that he didn't win an Oscar for that role! but i guess most people watched that film for Johnny Depp...

WDW: I would love to see Jake play a nervous wreck! I think his good looks work against him, cos Woody Allen seems to like to pick actors who are like a younger version of himself (like Jason Biggs), someone who's not likely to be successful among women (hard for Jake to pull that off, i guess :P )... but he did cast Leo Di in one film.....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Winterbird - I'd love to see Jake play that too! But you're right, he's far too good looking for Allen to choose - oh well, onto the next smart director ...

Anouska, Im interested in these guys' momes. Pilar, as you prob know, distinguished actress, g'parents were in theatre, uncles and nephews screenwriters, directors. I bet she'd go wild over Etc.

Wow, this is an exciting post, WDW. So much interesting information. Interesting that Jake auditioned for the role of Ricky Fitts in American Beauty; I might have discovered our American Beauty a bit sooner! ;)

You're right, it is apalling, the remarks that Michelle's headmaster at school made about Brokeback, in stark contrast to the dean at Jake's. In Brokeback and movies of similar subject matter, it's about the love. I hate when people take a beautifully complex film and make it about one issue. But thanks for the lovely Brokeback moment video clip, I can always use one, and it's especially poignant seeing our Heath in it. :')

And on a completely light note, I love fashion and Maggie's fashion sense. I have always loved Cyndi Lauper! I'm very interested in Natalie's vegan shoe line, I'm a shoe fanatic and a semi-vegetarian, and I really want to reduce how many animal products I use, wherever possible, and something very stylish would be nice. I hate to think other living beings as an endlessly exploitable resourse, instead of the living, breathing, feeling creatures they are. I know Stella McCartney designs vegan shoes too; probably out of my league in $$$! I may just treat myself to some outrageously expensive and beautiful Stella McCartney vegan shoes one day, and definitely check out Nat's! :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you Bertie :D I had no idea about Jake auditioning for American Beauty - I'd love to see him act with Kevin Spacey - just love him. I like that - our American Beauty!

The idea that a so-called educated man could be that ignorant about Brokeback...

I didn't no Natalie was into designing vegan shoes. As a veggie, I've had trouble with shoes over the years and I admire someone like Natalie who does something about it when she has the resources. I think Stella's would be out of the question!

Hey all

Hope everyone had a great Sunday. Feels weird to lose an hour a few weeks early. I don't like it, lol.

Another stellar post!! Wonderful to hear about Jake's teacher. Jake and Maggie had a very strong foundation and are all the better for it. Horrible to about Michelle's teacher. It shows the difference between support and ignorance. But Michelle has come out all the stronger for it. Btw, I had never seen that picture of Jake and Michelle before. Looks like the Oscar nominees luncheon. I recognize their clothes. Is that on IHJ? I will have to check that out!

Maggie has a great individual style. I thought what she had to say about fashion was great. Natalie P. is also a great style. Good for her for creating a vegan shoe line. I really can't wait to see Jake and Nat on the big screen!

Also thanks for the OS post from yesterday. I love hearing about Jake's past work and the interviews and observations he (and his co-stars and/or directors) had at the time.

I hope Jake and Sam Mendes work together again. They have a wonderful director/actor chemistry and Jake really deserved an Oscar nod for Jarhead.

Javier Bardem is oh so sexy and a brilliant actor. Before Night Falls is a must see.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! Blogger ate my post...

I don't know where the Jake and Michelle picture came from, unfortunately. I really like it though.

So glad you liked the OS post yesterday. I hope Jake works with Sam again too, I really do. Jake seemed to flourish for him.

I think the Jake and Michelle picture comes from that Oscar luncheon. At least the clothes look the same. I'm enjoying these posts so much, WDW. Wonderful perspective on Jake, the person!

I stopped in at the local Blockbuster yestersay and there was an entire section of shelves devoted to Rendition, probably at least 100 copies of the movie...except all but a half dozen were rented out!!!! Blockbuster!Guy highly reccommended it...said it was a great movie...truthful! I thanked him for the "suggestion" and said maybe I'd see it sometime! LOL!
After watching my own copy, I decided to watch "V" tonight...Natalie did an exceptional job in that movie. I hadn't realized how very good she was.

I'm excited to see Brothers, too.
I guess Natalie and Jake have known each other half their lives...give or take a year or two.
Hard to believe she and Paris Hilton and Britney are about the same age!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Bobbyanna :) That's great news about your Blockbusters pushing Rendition. Of course, it's out on DVD here very soon - next week I think - so it will be interesting to see how the film does here. It must be so strange for Jake and Natalie to work with someone that they've known for that length of time - but good too. I bet they do an incredible job. Natalie has an incedible head on her shoulders, as does Jake :)

Glad you've been enjoying these posts - I've thoroughly enjoyed doing them.

I hope everyone in the UK is doing OK with this big storm, especially on the coasts with those tides.

Morning WDW and everyone,
My favorite morning activity is reading here before getting off to my doc:) and another fantastic post it is too.
Jake was fortunate to have attended such a fine school and to have a wonderful mentor at such a young age. What a loving and beautiful photo of them.
I love the idea of Natalie's shoes and would buy a pair in a NY minute...if I had the bucks, though her shoes are more affordable, than Stella's; until then I'll put them on my wish list:)
I had no idea Rendition would be practically unrentable here...which makes me glad I was able to buy a copy.
Who knows why the BO was so low, perhaps people put it on their list of movies to see in DVD format???
Like everyone here I look forward to Brothers. I met Natalie as an actor in The Professional and was blown away by her talent. Her performance in Cold Mountain was one of the highlights of that film for me. She brings such an intensity to some of her roles; I can't wait to see her interact with Jake:)
No more having fun here...back soon:)

Morning Sass! I'm just off out the door myself to be blown across town to see The Boleyn Girl film. Perfect day for a movie.

I love those pictures of Jake and his teacher - Jake's expression says it all. Also, one has to wonder how often a student like Jake comes along.

Have a good day :D

I hope the weather will turn better by this weekend.

I knew that about Michelle's school. The thing is, it's all water under the bridge. Pretty much *everyone* does some things that school officials disapprove of. It just doesn't usually get aired in public, that's all.

Jake and Maggie took some of the same classes when they were at Columbia. Maggie was born in New York, so attending Columbia might have been like going home again. As an actor, Jake would benefit from having some ties to the New York entertainment community. Indeed, he took a film editing course at Columbia....

twistedlogic said...

Great post! I love that no one who has worked with Jake ever has a bad word to say about him and it's great that he still keeps in touch with his teacher:) It's funny you should mention BBM cos I watched Crash last night, as it was on TV and I'd never seen it before and I wanted to see what could possibly have persuaded the Oscar people to vote for it over BBM. I actually really wanted to like it, cos it would make me feel better to think BBM lost out to a really good film(even though obviously nothing can come close to BBM) I'll resist the temptation to rant,but...well, let's just I wasn't impressed with it at all:(

Thanks for the Maggie and Natalie interviews. I'm really impressed with Natalie and all her charity work - it's good to see someone in her position put their money where their mouth is, so to speak:)

Hey Winterbird - you're not the only drowned rat around here! It's like TDAT out there, I wouldn't be surprised to see the remains of the Cutty Sark floating past the window any time now. Apparently the worst should be over by Wednesday at the latest.

Hey all,

Hope those in the UK are doing okay with the storm.

You know I don't think Jake is at SXSW. I really think we would have heard something about him being there either in the press for Crawford's premiere or on a blog from the fest. My feeling is that he and Chris went to Brooklyn. Maggie/Naomi/Romana could have been back in the city by the time the weekend was over and the paps don't usually go out there. Would be nice to think he has been visiting with his family and maybe Michelle and Matilda. I also think he had gone back to LA already we would have seen at least a pic or two of him. Just a thought..

I'm sitting here in "Baggy filth" (Maggie,I love you!)feeling REALLY stoopid,WDW! I've come here to catch up on the posts I've missed over the last couple of days, but before I did I e-mailed you what I thought was a fantastic article on the lovely Ms.Portman, only to get here and find that you posted a link to it yesterday!I haven't seen much of Natalie's work, but from what I know of her she is a class act in so many ways and I'm glad that Jake has her as a friend. I'm really champing at the bit for "Brothers" too,for all sorts of reasons, but not least to see what I'm sure will be crackling on-screen chemistry between Natalie and Jake.

I don't think I've a snowball's chance in hell of ever scooping you on something and sending you a Jake-related jewel which you haven't already seen, but I'm really behind the times on this one! I was telling TL in a brief excuse for a sporadic e-mail yesterday that I haven't been able to get my "posting head" on for days now and have the attention span of a gnat. I think when they pulled out half on my innerds they took the concentration part of my brain out with it too!

Must say the last few posts which I've just played catch up on have been fantastic, although I'm going to have to go back and try and get the video to play of Jake's "October Sky" interview. I LOVE that film and always bawl my eyes out when I watch it - must be something to do with being a coalminers daughter(and grand-daughter). Must watch it again soon!

This latest post is just a totally info-packed Jake-fest. I love the fact that Jake remembers where he came from and who helped to get him to where he is now. His drama tutor has a lot to be proud of and we have much to thank him for. So true to what we know of Jake that he still keeps in touch with Ted Walsh and invites him along to share in the fruits of his success.

I would have loved to have seen Maggie in High School, modelled on the highly shall we say "original" Ms Lauper (Though she may have looked like an explosion in a paint factory at times, and we all have our youthful indiscretions and fashion faux-pas,I'll forgive Cyndi anything for her recording of "Time After Time"). I really connect with Maggie's attitude on many things and she's grown into one beautiful, together young woman.

Finally thanks for the inclusion of that lovely snippet of "Brokeback" red carpet Jake,so delighted and overwhelmed by how so many people had been touched and changed by the film of which he'd been such a magical ingredient.

This clip brought back some wonderful memories and made me happy and sad all at the same time. Call me crazy, but it always gave me the shivers when Jake said Heath's name, there was always such a warmth and a fondness to it,but that frisson is shot through with an inevitable pang now.

As for Michelle's school-master....only goes to show that we've come a long way, but, ye gods, have we got a long way to go!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hi Get Real. I agree,I too would love to think that Jake is getting some down time in New York right now, with Chris, his folks and who knows,Michelle and Matilda. a heart-warming,lump-in-throat type thought, but who knows....

Hi everyone - sorry I missed you all this afternoon - I braved The Big Storm - or The Big Wind - to see The Other Boleyn Girl - I'm desperately trying to thinking of something positive to say about it... Natalie wore some great frocks and Scarlett has beautiful hair.

Hello my lovely drowned rats :D

Drowned rat #1 Winterbird - hope you're drying off - I hear London's pretty cut off so I'm glad I'm not doing that commute anymore.

Hi Paul - I suppose there's also an element of picking a college a long way from home and to have a contrast to the Hollywood acting school.

Hey Drowned rat #2 TL :D You saw Crash! When the adverts came on I was jumping across the room to turn the TV off. I grandly announced to Mr WDW 'That film will never be shown in MY house!', but he just chuckled and said he didn't want to see it anyway - just as well. I really like some of the actors in Crash - especially Terrence whom I saw in Toronto more than a couple of times - but it's just not right. Glad you didn't like it :D (Mind you, might be better than The Other Boleyn Girl...). So I've ranted for you!

Thanks Get Real - we don't get the snow over here - although they have up in Scotland at the moment - but we do get some big winds.

I don't think Jake went to Texas either. I think he's probably staying quietly somewhere in NYC too. I wonder if he and Chris helped to celebrate Peter's birthday the other day. I do know I miss him and hope he pops up soon.

Hi nadine - good to hear from you and I hope you're doing well - thanks for the emails xx That was funny about emailing me the link - don't worry about it!A case of great minds thinking alike.

I'm a coalminer's granddaughter so October Sky has a special meaning for me too - hope you get the vid working, maybe you should splash out on the DVD! The video clip of Jake - so enthusiastic and excited about what was happening to him - is just fantastic.

Hope you're all having a good Monday :D

Afternoon everyone,

So you saw the movie then? I hate to say it but I didn't think it looked very good. The reviews I saw weren't very positive either. Sometimes I wonder about Scarlett's acting abilities.

To answer your question from yesterday, Mr. BG didn't watch TDAT with me he went upstairs to watch something else and strangely enough he didn't even comment on my watching it this time. Maybe he's just come to expect it now. :) Smart boy.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bird Girl! I'm glad you watched TDAT - and without question as well :D I do not recommend The Boleyn movie - Eric Bana could have said Uggg all the way through and no character would have been lost. Scarlett has pouting down to a very fine art :D

sass said...

Afternoon WDW and peeps:)
I was hoping you would like The Other Boleyn Girl; I'd read so many tepid to downright negative reviews. I spend more than I should of my disability money on movies, because I love movies, plus they keep me more sane than I would be otherwise. I was putting off seeing this movie, just in case the reviews were right. TY WDW. It will be a rental DVD for me now:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass - I love movies too and it's a real treat to sit there on a stormy day off work, but I wouldn't waste your money on this one. But probably worth it as a DVD rental with a bottle of wine. I'm waiting for 10,000 BC now (great trailer for that) with thoughts of Jake in a loincloth :D

BirdGirl said...

I haven't decided yet if I am going to see 10,000 BC at the theater. Part of me says that if I am going to watch it at all it should be on the big screen. The other part of me tells me that it is a pretty cheesy movie to spend 10 bucks on.

I love movies too but it has gotten absolutely outrageous to go to the theater. Any more I really really have to want to see something to go the theater.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bird Girl - I know it's going to be cheesy - I just can't help myself! [But I do have a gym membership card that gives me a big discount at my cinema] I am a big fan of the big movies, the type that makes Mr WDW roll his eyes (if it's not in black and white, he's not really interested :D)

Anonymous said...

I was holding off on See TOBG. I was eventually thinking of seeing it though because I love Natalie and really like Scarlett and Eric. Now it seems more of a rental.

We are in a bit of a shock here in NY because the Governor has just admitted, after an article in the NY Times, that he has been part of a prostitution ring. :/

Anonymous said...

^^ Oops, sorry to be OT.

Anonymous said...

I actually liked "Crash" OK when I first watched it... I just think it's not in the same calibre as BBM... in fact, I didn't even think it deserved to be nominated, let alone won... but now, I just can't... I can't watch that movie without feeling sad and angry. And Matt Dillon will never be in my good book again for that smug face he showed when Crash won.

So yeah, last night - I really tried to avoid catching even a glimpse of that movie on Channel 4.

paulh said...

Since I enjoyed Philippa Gregory's novel so much, I *had* to see the film version of "The Other Boleyn Girl." I'm also reading a new book called "Jane Boleyn," which takes a more sympathetic view of Jane Parker Boleyn than most historians took. So, if that book becomes a movie as well, we will have more Boleyn hijinks to look forward to.

I have a longstanding bad feeling about Henry the Eighth. He was a fairly good compser, and should have stuck with that, rather than running his country in such a harmful way and treating women with such beastliness. That his daughter Elizabeth overcame his monstrous genetic legacy to become a great leader and fairly decent person is almost a miracle. Or maybe it's Mary Boleyn, who raised her.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real - OMG - that sounds pretty serious with your governor. Thanks for sharing it though as that's interesting.

Hey there Winterbird, we think the same exactly on That Film. I doubt I'll be ever able to watch it, not that I want to much.

Hi Paul - Mary had nothing to do with raising Elizabeth, that was a ridiculous suggestion in the film. I don't want to give any plot away - because not much of the film was based on anything to do with history - but Jane Parker was much more complex and an infamously nasty piece of work. I find this period of history fascinating and was fortunate to have spent some years studying it. I was probably not the intended audience! I did like the portrayal in the film of Katharine of Aragon though. I would have liked to have seen more of her. Henry's character didn't exist in the film which is a nonsense because his was the most dominant personality at the court. Ooh, I'm going right off topic myself - Jake is hot ;)

I did imagine seeing Jake in a big white gaping night shirt though while I watched the film - a pleasing image I hope stays with me!

Lovely article about Jake and his acting coach. And how the school was proud of Jake and had no problem with him being in BBM. Nice photo of him and Michelle. I don't think I ever saw one of just him and her.

And I loved the ones with Jake and Natalie I think they make a lovely couple. :D

Hi Trekfan - I like that picture of Jake and Michelle too - I posted it as it's the only picture I've seen of just the two of them. And yes, there's real chemistry between Jake and Natalie :)
