Hot on the heels of new pictures of the Joker, we now have a television appeal by assistant district attourney Rachel Dawes on behalf of Harvey Dent and in support of his campaign to be District Attourney for Gotham City. Apparently, this is in response to some scurrilous slurs made against the good name of Dent (alternative video link).
The hunt for someone (Peter Sarsgaard) not too distantly related to Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal) has grown warm again. Although no stars were in evidence, an IMDb poster today revealed how An Education has transfigured the streets of West Ealing, London. 'The parade of shops where I get my fruit and veg weekly has been transformed into the 1960s. All very well done, with old-style shop fronts and a huge period billboard. Some nice old cars, too, and I saw extras being bouffed up into teddyboys.' And the signs are they'll be back.
A week from today, Nailed begins filming in South Carolina and Jake Gyllenhaal (or Howard Ryder, as we shall soon know Jake as very well) will be back at work. Not surprisingly, the excitement is mounting in the neighbourhood at the prospect of an invasion by a high profile movie and its stars. Local site, The State, reports: 'When Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel come to town to film a movie, that’s kind of cool. So what if that movie is about a receptionist who has a nail shot into her head “eliciting wild sexual urges” and meets a congressman who takes advantage of “her sex drive,” as The Hollywood Reporter described the film in November? Not exactly the kind of stuff you tout to the Palmetto crowd. “Nailed is a political satire in which Sammy Joyce (Biel) ... goes on a crusade to Washington to fight for the rights of the ‘bizarrely injured’ and meets an immoral congressman (Gyllenhaal),” is how the S.C. Department of Commerce described the movie in a news release last month. The Commerce folks say they got the G-rated description straight from the production company. Guess Jake and Jessica, on their own, are sexy enough for most folks.'
The more one hears about Nailed, the more bizarre it seems, and the more one wonders how Jake will breath life and interest into the 'immoral' Howard Ryder. At the moment, it is still unclear how the script will play out, and I will confess to some bemusement. I hope that not all the compensations from such a film with such a storyline are the obvious ones (although those do go a long way, I admit).
Today's challenge
I'm always up for a challenge - especially if my mind has been sufficiently lubricated with Merlot - and today's was to include X-File's Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny in a post.
Gillian was relatively easy. Jake and Gillian both took to the boards of the West End at around the same time and when Jake received his Evening Standard Newcomer of the Year Award (for This is Our Youth) at London's Savoy Hotel on 25 November, 2002, Gillian was a natural choice for presenter. Jake wasn't the only familiar winner that night, Sam Mendes also won two awards. These were for productions of Uncle Vanya and what is quite possibly my favourite Shakespeare play, Twelfth Night.
In 2003, the What's On Stage Theatregoers announced their awards for the year and both Jake and Gillian Anderson were winers - Gillian won best Actress for What the Night Is For at the Comedy Theatre while Jake won London Newcomer of the Year for his performance at the Garrick. Sam Mendes was nominated twice but, this time, unsuccessfully.
Jake has since admitted his unease at attending ceremonies in London. He had admitted to the Daily Mail back in January 2002: 'I'm a little scared to be doing theatre in London.' When he was interviewed by Martha's Vineyard radio (along with Brad Silberling for the promotion of Moonlight Mile), Jake said that he had been 'at an awards show. I made a fool out of myself in London. I was the only American amongst a lot of Brits' ('surprise, surprise' interrupts Brad), 'I was actually bookended by Tony Blair and Mick Jagger... I don't know what I was doing there,' Jake says, '...You guys have great food.'
To find a connection between Jake and David Duchovny was more of a challenge, but Ruby helped me out, and told me that they appeared together - with Shakira of the hips - on Last Call With Carson Daly back in September 2002. Not much is known of this show, but an eyewitness account survives. 'I tuned in just once so that I could see one of my favorite actors, Jake Gyllenhaal, who isn't really interviewed much (and this was summer 2002, so he was interviewed even less than he is now). I have never felt sorrier for another human being. Jake, I mean. That poor guy was trying to talk about his movies (two of which were out at the moment, with another coming out soon), and all Carson wanted to hear about was his love scene with Jennifer Aniston. That was IT. THEN Carson asks Jake about his sister Maggie's nude scenes in the movie Secretary. Jake shot him what can only be described as a "death glare," and Carson shut up. (Come on, Carson, that's his SISTER! He doesn't want to talk about her being naked!) And not ONCE did Carson mention October Sky or Donnie Darko! No, it was "Bubble Boy" and sex scenes...'
I'm not aware that Jake ever made a repeat visit. I'm not certain how David fared...

OK. I owe you a Cosmo. Or maybe two.

Hey Ruby :D Only two? How about a bucket? xx
It's a pretty impressive theme. :) Though I'm very distracted by 2002 Jake.
Was West Ealing on our W list for Peter?
I have a ton of replies for Nads's comments on the last thread, which I'll PM to her *
Sorry forgot the xxxxxx
Anouska! It didn't click with me but you are so right, West Ealing does begin with W - I feel like I should be in a circus for clairvoyancy or something like that :D
2002 Jake is very expressive. I love those expressions in the screencaps from the Daly show. OK you can have some xx too as I'm feeling emotionally perturbed after reading more about Nailed :D
I just wanted to add 'squeeeeee' for David D. I lurrrve him. He's so naughty in Californication. :D
2002 Jake is very distracting. Nailed-Jake is going to be an interesting incarnation, I think. :D
Nadine said: It is a weird, sort of incestuous world in Hollywood"
amd on this blessed blog, too, it seems to me. is conversation being conducted via pms? is everybody walking backwards? honestly!
Hi Pia :D The only walking going on here is strictly forwards. Anouska and Nadine are penpals and the thread has moved on :)
p.s. maybe he's walking backwards because his physicala therapist told him its good for his ankle.
and dark knight is not coming out until July! gosh this is as bad as weathering the elections. I need a vacation.
but Maggie is great. a neat promo!
It's weird, Pia, how time moves on as I remember thinking last summer how long a wait we had until TDK came out, and now it's only 3 months away and so much has happened in the time. The last year has just flown by so fast.
lol, that last pic, the expression on Jake's face, eyebrows arched, lips pursed is *vintage* Jake.
Hi JoeAnn! I love Jake's expression in that last picture - he's just daring the interviewer to say something else that's ridiculous. Those pictures are so expressive. Thanks for commenting -Hope you're having a good evening :D
Wow so much good stuff!
Jake and Gillian are so sweet! I like her.
Jake on Carson is young, sexy. But it sounds like Carson was his annoying self. Sorry not a fan of his show. Went to a taping back in the day (tix were free from a friend) and he was blah.
Way cool that you could link Jake and David. Like David a lot.
From the last post...
Maggie and Paul Bettany....very nice. Love Paul and most of his movies. That should be an interesting shoot all the way out in isolated New Zealand. Enjoyed Maggie's Rachel Dawes. They really have done a good job on the viral marketing for Batman.
I want Jake to do a play again. But I am more interested and excited for Nailed. Sounds like a wacky one and Jake is the best at that. Comedic Jake is awesome!
Personally I can understand Jake's frustration with the paps. Yes I look at the pics and videos but a lot of the time it seems so crazed that it is uncomfortable to see them be so in his face. :/ If that means he looks silly walking backwards so be it. I don't blame him. JMO
xoxoxo all.
Hey WDW! I can't get the video to work:( There's just an empty space where the screen should be and nothing hapens when I click on it:(
Howard Ryder?! Very droll;)
Hey there Get Real! I love seeing Gillian and Jake together - I was such a big fan of the X Files when it first began all those years ago. She soundsvery interesting to me. I haven't seen David Duvochny's new show but to me he's Fox. It wasn't easy linking those two :D But it's a great excuse to see some very sexy pics of Jake way back then. I don't normally feel like that about younger Jake but I do here.
I certainly agree about Maggie's new project - what a place for a shoot. I love the sound of it. And the way Warner Bros has been releasing tasters for TDK is masterly - obviously the film has to deliver but I suspect it will.
if Nailed is wacky I'll be happy. I'm worried about a Romcom but a wacky comedy or a witty satire sounds good to me. I wonder how long we'll have to wait to see it.
Have a lovely evening :D
Hi TL :D It doesn't work? It works OK for me - sorry :( Here's an ugly link (I've forgotten how to do the fancy one I'm hopeless, can someone remind me yet again and I'll save it somewhere safe!)

Howard Ryder... My best friend at school, her surname was Ryder. I just about prefer Howard to Douglas but I don't think Jake looks like a Howard :D
^^^ I've put another link to the video in the post :)
Thanks for the link, WDW! That one works perfectly, thank you:) Maggie looks great:)
I prefer the name Douglas myself, but I can see why they went with Howard;) Or is it just my dirty mind seeing a double entendre there?
Btw, I agree about those Carson Daly pics, Jake's facial expressions are priceless:D
he looks so nice with Jennifer Aniston. I wish those two had hooked up. They look so good together. Jennifer is still single right?
trekfan
Glad that one works TL :D I wasn't looking for a double entendre in Howard but now it's not gonna leave my head!
Good to see you Trekfan :D Any excuse and I'll post a pic of Jake with Jennifer - the chemistry is so photogenic.
Hey WDW! I wasn't exactly looking for a double entendre either, but Howard Ryder?? It's not exactly subtle! Or maybe it is just my dirty mind *skulks away embarrassedly*
I think my mind must be too dainty for a smutty romping movie :D But maybe the name bodes well, eh? :D
Hello, Wet Dark!
I have 26 years in the four years since I am fan of Batman.
Seen all the Batman movies in the cinema.
One of the villains that I most like is the Joker (and Catwoman), so it was a thrill to know that my idol Heath would interpret it.
From the beginning many people doubt of their performance, but always believed and believe that Heath will show the best performance of the villain.
I wish much success to this film, especially to Heath Ledger.
Hi there Monica :D I've never seen any of the Batman movies - I've just never liked any of the superhero movies - but as soon as I heard Heath and Maggie were in this one I was hooked and I've rarely looked forward to a film as much. I'm sure Heath will be superb. How I wish it wasn't his last time in a big role. I hope the film's successful because of Heath too :D
Oh yeah, you have to say "Howard" in an American accent to make it work :)
That would have gone right past us. We'd have been all HOW-ard.
Oh, how fun! Maggie as Assistant D.A. endorsing Harvey Dent seems adds such realism! :) Can't wait to see it.
You know, when I first heard about the Harvey Dent character for Batman, I thought someone who shall remain nameless for now would have been *ideal* for the role. Someone with movie star good looks and jawline, dark hair, and blue eyes, just like the comic strip drawings - a young, handsome wunderkind attorney. This role was described as one that would carry over into 3 Batman films, and have dimension, as he's a decent and idealistic character to start, a good guy, one that you are sympathetic to, but something happens to change him. But, we won't go there. *sigh* ;)
hey Anouska - I need to borrow an American to say it to me (Jake, are you free?)
Hi Bertie :D Oh, I wonder who you mean... ;D That would have been amazing, a great role for Jake to get his teeth into without the risk of being typecast as the caped crusader himself.
That would have been amazing, a great role for Jake to get his teeth into without the risk of being typecast as the caped crusader himself.
Exactly! :)
Let me be the Devil's advocate, though: Do you really want to see the monstrosity that Jake would morph into later in the series? With half of his face brutally disfigured?
Jake's character in "Nailed" is wet, with a huge dark side, and a lot of wildness. Wet, dark and wild. ;-)
Well, Paul, if you put it like that, I'll stick with Howie ;D
Do you really want to see the monstrosity that Jake would morph into later in the series? With half of his face brutally disfigured?
Yes, because it's symbolic of his struggle - his good side and his bad side, with one who will eventually win out. And his commentary on the sometimes arbitrary nature of justice by flipping a coin. Seriously, I thought it would have been a fabulous part, that's what gives it so much depth!
I do like the idea of Howard Ryder, great name. ;) But, I'd have to suspend my disbelief a bit (gladly) to imagine that any red-blooded woman wouldn't welcome advances from him. Kinda like Jack Twist saying "I've never met a filly who could throw me" to which I say, I don't know any filly who would want to! ;)
Hi Bertie - I'm feeling conflicted myself right now as I really want Jake to do such roles as you describe - especially ones that Jake can develop and make his own and explore real basic truths about human nature. And then my fickle side emerges and I'm won over by the immoral congressman. I suppose I need to see Jake alternate these types of roles. I fear I'm greedy. But there is plenty of time :D
Absolutely - Jake has a long career ahead of him. For superhero movies that usually have basic, fable moral messages, Harvey Dent has some depth, I thought. :)
Morning!
OK I am going to be quick... I had too many frozen margaritas last night, so i need to find an aspirin...
Nailed sounds strange and weird and funny... the more I hear, the more I think it's quite close to "I love Huckabees", there are some hits and misses there, but overall, a nice experiment on comedy... I hope David O.Russell make a better movie this time. I kind of trust Jake's decision on it... am quite sure maybe his mom has given him some advice on the script :P
I love Jake's "death glare"!!!!
Jake shouldn't fear to sit among Brits... we'll get him drunk in no time... and we all know how wild Jake can be when he's tipsy :P
have a nice day ahead everyone :)
Morning everybody :D
Hi Winterbird all the way over there - frozen margaritas sounds like a great idea :D 'Strange and weird and funny' sounds like a good potential description for Nailed. I agree, Jake need have no fear :D
Have a good day everyone :)
Morning everyone, morning WDW.:)
Hope the weather is getting better in UK. In Italy is notably worse today though.:/
I believe that portraying the man's struggle between good and bad is what Jake has done yet. Jarhead Swoff and Rendition Douglas is what comes in mind first.
But I agree that Harvey Dent would have been a more iconic and symbolic way to represent it.
Jake as Howard Ryder is very...promising!
And yay for sexy young Jake! :)
Hey there, WDW! Great post as usual. I always learn so many things from your posts!
I would have had no idea at all that that was Gillian Anderson posing with Jake!!! Carson Daly is such an ass.
I like Aaron Eckhart. But I would love it if Jake could land some kind of franchise! He'd have made a wonderful Two Face and would have had such fun with it.
As for Nailed, I think it has the potential to go either way. It will either be a hilarious satire...or it will tank. I admit I'm anxious about it. If anyone can make it work, Jake can. He has wonderful comedic timing and wit.
Jake and Reese attended a 43rd B'day party the other day, for Robert Downey, Jr. I mention it because Robert has just completed that Iron Man thing. And if that wasn't unlikely superhero casting, I don't know what is!
Yes, Winterbird, by all means try to get Jake tipsy. Does anyone know whether Jake has publicly said that he wanted to be Harvey Dent? Maybe we aren't doing him any favors by advocating for roles that he turned down. :-(
I don't mind the thought of Jake getting dirty or wet or silly or stuffed into some absurd costume (or bubble), but I stop short of wanting to see him severely disfigured. But that's just me...
Good afternoon,folks.
Well done,WDW,for unearthing direct Jake connections such that you could get the dynamic duo of Anderson and Duchovny in one post (they've been filming the new X-Files film recently - can't wait for that to come out,I too was a huge fan from the beginning, especially of the early series). I missed "Californication" - note to self "catch the repeats"!
Carson Daly is by all accounts a complete dipstick and it would seem it was not one of Jake's happier interviews but the screencaps from it are lovely, especially the last one which seems to capture some of the essential Jake we know and love.
Reprising yesterday's theme of the incestuous connections of Hollywood, maybe it was being a fellow award winner at those "Evening Standard Awards" in 2002, that alerted Sam Mendes to this intriguing young American actor, such that he followed his progress and eventually cast him as Swoff. Who knows what might arise from the briefest of chance meetings....and Jake in Jarhead was definitely meant to be!
Good to hear that Jake is still in RDJ's social circle and was helping him celebrate his birthday (eh TL? ;-) ).
As for "Nailed" - I'm hoping that Jake's virtually unerring talent for picking a winner thus far hasn't deserted him and this will be a witty/wacky comedy rather than some soppy, predictable RomCom. The choice of his character name,Howard Ryder, would suggest that it won't be the most subtle of scripts...although the heroine's name,Sammy Joyce seems innocent enough. They could have gone with Lucy Tupper...;-)
PaulH, I think there was some early buzz about Jake playing Harvey Dent, but I never heard if Jake was ever actually connected with it, or turned it down. It's the character, not Jake, who is disfigured by mobsters, is how it has been historically written.
Hi there everyone :D Thanks for the comments! I've enjoyed reading them. On my way home now.... Back soon! And it is beautiful out there.
