Congressman Jake and 21st-Century Leading Ladies

If I had my way, this is what all congressmen, immoral or otherwise, will be wearing for the 2008/2009 season. Here is Jake Gyllenhaal on the set of Nailed on Thursday April 17, demonstrating what we're in for when the movie hits the theatres, hopefully sooner rather than later. Jake is also modelling his two accessories of choice - coffee and phone.

Local TV station WJBF has remarked on the irony that, while the Nailed production takes over the grounds of the Columbia Statehouse, inside that building debate rages on about how to attract film companies back to the state now that rebates have shifted in favour of productions employing South Carolinians. While this may seem like a good idea in theory, it has not, in practice, led to companies employing more locals, but instead they have moved their business to more generous states.

Maggie, Gwyneth and Liv - Rachel, Pepper and Betty

USA Weekend gathered together three leading ladies - Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gwyneth Paltrow and Liv Tyler - for a chat about their roles playing opposite Batman, the Ironman and The Incredible Hulk in three of the biggest movies of the summer. Both Maggie and Gwyneth are slightly more unusual choices to play heroines in need of rescue, but, as Gwyneth says (quoting WDW favourite RDJ): 'Well, Robert Downey Jr. (who plays the starring role in "Iron Man") called me and said, "You have to do it," and I said, "Yes, it sounds like great fun." And then he said, "And, by the way, don't you want to be in a movie that people actually see?" I wondered, "Hmm, what would that be like?"' Not many films require an actress to get into the mindset of a character called Pepper Potts.

Maggie herself says: 'My friends and my family know I don't ever want to do stupid and meaningless things, so they trusted me not to do that with Batman', while also mentioning that she never read comics herself but that brother Jake was (is?) a fan of Mad Magazine.

Talking of Maggie, she is very possibly in London right now to be with Peter Sarsgaard, whose production, An Education, continues to make its way across the streets and boroughs of the big city. It was last seen by an IMDb poster and extra - at the end of last week: 'filming near Old Deer Park in Richmond - right beside the Thames.' Very nice.

And finally...

The bad news is that the Guardian last week reported that 'For men, 2008 is the year of plaid. It had a ubiquitous presence on the autumn/winter catwalks, so if you want to beat the crowds, get yourself into a shirt this spring.' Even worse, Jake is named as a known afficianado of this fashion trend. Hopefully, the Congressman look will soon take over the catwalks.

Includes pictures from IHJ, USA Weekend and Mad.

Where did you hear that Maggie might possibly be in London with Peter?

Hi Interesting - it was on this site a couple of weeks ago. It's because Maggie pulled out of her new movie The Private Lives of Pippa Lee in order to spend time with Peter on his filmshoot in London.

Maria Bello steps in for Pippa

Hey WDW! Glad you're back safe and sound. Hope the wedding went well and you had a fab time:)

I can't believe I missed Sarsy again:( And only by 30-odd years too!;) I lived in Richmond when I was a kid.

Thanks for the plaid fashion link -where Jake leads others follow! Our boy is such a trend setter :D
I prefer him in the Sleazy Congressman gear though - I cannot wait to see this film, I'm so intrigued to know what sort of a comedy it's going to be. Although it sounds like they could make another movie based on all the on-set goings on so far:D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL :D Good to be back, but sleepy :)

Damn, that was a near miss with beloved Sarsy. I've never been To Richmond. They aren't half moving around with this film. Not going to be much of London missing.

[Ooh watching a trailer for Ironman - can't wait to see that..]

I like the Congressman look too - the shirt hanging out is the right touch. As for the shoot, I hope Jake keeps his Rescue Remedy to hand as it all sounds a bit stressful to me. Incidentally, I wonder if SC has a favourite coulinary delicacy...

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Sounds like Sarsy's film is managing to miss out Sarf London :( They have reindeers in Greenwich park too, you know, if anyone involved with choosing locations is reading;)

Are those pics of Jake with his shirt hanging out from an actual scene in the film then? I assumed he was just walking around on set, I would have thought he'd be all neat and with his shirt tucked in if it was a proper scene. Mind you, I'm hoping there will also be plenty of scenes where he's not wearing anything at all;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I wouldn't mind seeing more reindeer in films myself.

Yep, I think those are off duty shots, TL, but they bode well :D

Hello all,

I hope you are all having a wonderful Sunday.

Jake is looking extremely sexy with his loose tie and un-tucked shirt. For some reason this has gotten me even more excited about this movie. Man, I have it bad.

Maggie looks absolutely beautiful. I love her hair right now.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you Bird Girl :D I'm relaxing with wine, chocolate and repeats of Top Gear :D

How much do I love an untucked shirt :P and yes the tie undone and ready to come off or tighten up for business. A great look.

Maggie looks absolutely stunning in these pictures - beautiful and sexy :D

Hi y'all, Pia, here, on a sunny spring Sunday!

Pantomime Horse (Brit tradition? very Monty Python!) seems like a fit metaphor for marriage - ! - says a woman who never got the hang of it, not for the want of tryin' - :D -

OMG plaids are okay for the Highland Scots, but a travesty when visited upon Jake's gorgeous bod. IHateWoolrichs.

Reading about Kristen Gore - what an assembled crew for this film, pretty incestuous if you ask me, everybody knows everybody else. Maybe its always that way. Will they pull this off? Its gotta be interesting.

As os RJDowney piece in New York Sunday Times - I think he's part of our "family" now, right?

And Maggie, glorious Maggie, with her incredible charm.

Ive been thinking, re: yesterday's posts and conversation, about critical gossip of Jake by a surly fandom - (but who is to say these are not "true Jake fans"?) - and recallimg the production notes on Donnie Darko, and Richard Kelly & cameraman Posner's comments that Jake went into antic mode between shots but when it was time to perform was totally professional -

I dont care what Jake does off camera - I really dont care - man when Im off the job, you dont wanma know what I do!

Whooops! A long past. And I thot I had nothing to say, today.

Anonymous said...

p.s. yeah a long past as well as a long post. forgive me for both.
:) :)

Afternoon WDW:)
Plaid...OMG! Jake is ahead of what's in style eh?;)

Maggie and the other leading ladies are beautiful.

Back soon to read more:)

Hi there Pia :D

I must read about Kirsten Gore - I know so little about her. Jake has always struck me as being a true professional with respect for the directors he works with, even though it's part of the process that they can all annoy each other now and again - it's all subservient to the character and perhaps helps it form. And yeah, aren't we all allowed a bad day? - can't we all now and then go and have a sulk in the loos? Jake might not do that but I know I do! And who knows how an account can be exaggerated. And yep, that was grumpy reporting of Jake.

RDJ is definitely 'one of the family' :D Strange thinking of Gwyneth working with him. And then they're linked with Maggie in the article - great stuff :D

Pantomime horses are a Brit tradition and go back to scary medieval hobby horses and green men :D Very spooky! But funny at a wedding :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass :D I have very mixed feelings about Jake being heralded as a leader of fashion trends because of the ghastly plaid!! The ladies are just gorgeous :D

Anonymous said...

"it's all subservient to the character and perhaps helps it form."

Yeah, Downey said, in todays NYT piece, that the celebrity stuff for him is mostly fuel for the work -

His comments about "ambition" were intresting to me. Jake's committment to his craft has always been, apparently, very strong.

pia

BirdGirl said...

Thank you Pia, for the lovely visual of Jake taking off his clothes.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia, that's interesting - how all the 'extra stuff' is put to good use in the creation of a role. I must read this article.

Hi there Bird Girl - a great image :D

Anonymous said...

WDW I gather hobby horses and thus pantomime horses are fertility symbol.

& so is Jake, esp, yes, Birdgirl, considering his primal urge to be nekkid. & our primal urge to see him so.

you must be feeling better. and everyeeps along ths Mississippi fault safe, I gather.

hey everyone! oh how I love to see those pictures of congressman Jake..because thats exactly what he was wearing when I met him with his untucked shirt..i will never forget that look!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ooh Pia, that is some thought :D

Hey there Nicole - yep, Jake was looking especially gorgeous for you! I wish you luck for next week!

Anonymous said...

oh my... am I the only who totally dig Jake's new "side parting" hairdo? gorgeous... this congressman can have his wicked way on any human (nailed in the head or not)...

plaid it not all bad... i love them, actually... espeically those with pearl snap buttons. OK, maybe not the ones with the birds :P

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird :D Nope, you're definitely not the only on to appreciate the new Jake hairdo! Love it. Not so loving the plaid look though, birds or no birds ;D

*good girl* said...

Hi everyone, hope you all had and are having a great Sunday ;)

And WDW good to have you back ;)

Thanks for the new post, Jake looks gorgeous "partly" dressed up, even though I'd rather have a "Proof" hairstyle there :P (considering a Jarhead one wouldn't fit too much with a congressman!)

...ouch... the plaid fashion news isn't a good one to end the weekend :P not surprised Jake is a major example of this fashion though :D

Well, hope Nicole got to see him again! Given that I hardly believe all the gossip about Jake and even if he acts nervous sometimes, man, he's a human being - a wonderful one though - well, this being said, i'd say these are the news I like to believe, the ones reported by true and certified Gyllenhaalics, of him smiling and being kind, and if not in a good mood, always polite anyway :)

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hi WDW. Oh but those pictures of Jake in the untucked white shirt and striped tie are rather delicious!!
I'm sure that Jake's only got the shirt untucked between takes here because, according to my friend who lives in Charleston,SC.,South Carolina gets very hot and humid.

This half-dressed state makes him look less like an immoral congressman and more like a rebellious sixth-former at a British public school - sigh, whimper! ;-) Either are fine by me!(Will I ever go to Heaven?).

And big sis is looking pretty damn fabulous too!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Good Girl :D It's great to be back!

Jake has never disappointed when I've seen him - far from it - amazing, charming and gorgeous. It was so great, but not a surprise, to hear that was Nicole's experience of Jake too. I prefer to trust the first-hand accounts too.

It did amuse me when I saw the plaid article - but not necssarily in a good way :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Nadine - posting at the same time! Ooh that's a thought - hot and humid South Carolina requiring an untucked, unbuttoned shirt... That tie looks a lot like my old school tie, that's for sure :D

OT! But anyone watching The Who on BBC4? Roger from The Who is wearing the blue version of Jake's "birds" tee....

BirdGirl said...

Yeah Pia,I am feeling much better and the aftershocks have let up. Thanks for asking.

I wish I could be watching The Who Winter Bird. They are one of my favorites. It's good to hear that Roger Daltrey has good taste in t-shirts. ;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone! Is it really Monday already... surely not :(

Hi Winterbird! Hey, that's good about the shirt - Jake continuing to trendset :D

Glad to hear you're feeling better, Bird Girl xx

*good girl* said...

Morning WDW, so sorry to say that yes, it's monday, and I'm quite sure about it because of the sleepiness that has been following me since when that damn thing called alarm clock woke me up this morning >.<

Well anyway, have a great week everybody ;) and sending positive vibe to Nicole and everybody there in SC to have more Jake encounters ;)

"OMG plaids are okay for the Highland Scots, but a travesty when visited upon Jake's gorgeous

I've been looking at the Tartan for my clan (my ancestors had to spend two centuries in
Scotland, because they were no longer welcome in England), and I modestly think it's
gorgeous. In any event, I have spent much of my life looking for the ultimate plaid, and
I shall not stop because of the naysayers in this blog. ;-) I think Jake's character wore
plaid sometimes in "Zodiac." Those were some of his best scenes ever, methinks.
Again, I say it modestly.

Maggie has never looked better. Like a young Lily Tomlin in that first photo....

"Ghastly" and "Plaid" should never occur in the same sentence. ;-)
Well, hardly ever....

Hey, Paul, Pia here.

Ive got Scots in my own background, on my paternal grandma's side, came over to fight the French in Quebec on the Plains of Abraham. Bloody Scots scared the bejesus out of the "Indians" fighting with the French.

Anyway, clan tartans, of which I have my own bolt of five yards bought in St Andrews, Scotland, to make me a gorgeous tartan clan kilt skirt one a these days - are not that which I abhor esp. since Id love to see Jake in a kilt - playing Bonnie Prince Charlie -

Its the woolrich plaids and lumberjack style that in my view make Jake look lumbersome. Checks are nice, though, he's had some gorgeous checked shirts.

However - Im not his stylist boo hoo hoo.

O, good morning everypeeps!

Oh, its Monday. Agggghhhhh!

paulh said...

Thanks for the explanation, Pia.
:-)

As my grandmother (another side of the family) explained one time, so many of my ancestors came to the U.S. because they were unwanted in Europe. Her example was a Scot and an Irish person who married each other, but had to leave because of religious differences. A third side of the family involved my mother's mother's people who had come from Northern Ireland.

Anyway, with plaids I am looking for quality over quantity. The unattractive hold no interest for me.

Still, I loved Jake/Graysmith in that lovely light blue checked or plaid shirt in "Zodiac." Jake looks great in anything blue, including the better plaids.

I also love that he grew up reaidng "Mad Magazine." My mother once confiscated my entire supply of that magazine. My younger brother found where she'd hidden them, and read them himself. ;-)

(I have no idea what Woolrich is)

Good Monday everyone.

I guess I spoke too soon on the aftershocks. We where awoken again with one. This time at about 12:40. I wish it would stop.

I gotta agree with you Paul. I think that plaid has gotten a bad rep. It isn't so bad at the right time. I think we all just got tired of seeing Jake in that big over shirt. With him, the less clothes the better. Can a get an AMEN?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Paul! I might not like plaid - at least on a big lumberjack shirt on Jake - but I do love some tartan.

Maggie looks just beautiful :D

hey Pia! So interesting to hear about the Scottish connection - a bunch of warriors :D - and I can totally see Jake in a kilt. There were guys in kilts at the wedding and they looked gorgeous. Jake would be so good with that look :D

I think we need to jobshare the Jake Stylist position... along with doing the hair and retouching.

Bird Girl, I'm sorry to hear about more shocks. I hope that's the last of them.

And AMEN!

Good to be home after a very busy day...

Pia, here.

"I think we all just got tired of seeing Jake in that big over shirt. With him, the less clothes the better. Can a get an AMEN?"

You'll get a full throated AMEN on that one, Birdgirl!

& hold onto your hat as the Missipssipi fault keeps twitching. (I remember spingtime floods, where you nad to cross the roads over fords. . . )

Paul, Woolrich's is a clothing store that specializes in men's outdoor wear. Horsey plaids. Where do you shop?

Im ordering layers from LLBean, this year, Jake inspired, with a femme touch.

BirdGirl said...

Yeah we had bad flooding again this year but it was nothing like 1993. That was a flood of biblical proportions. Luckily I don’t live on a river or creek.

AMEN and AMEN! Hiya, blogg's playing up again and I'm sufficiently calmer.

Birdgirl, can't be much fun for you guys right now. How long are these aftershocks expected to continue. Just be safe y'all.

Congressman Gyllenhaal - if only *sigh* I'd emigrate in a heartbeat and book regular meetings with him every week to complain about whatever. Do you have any congressmen over there that look like him and is there an age limit to become one?

RDJ of course is part of the family... I'm always interested to hear about him.. in fact I'm so proud of him to land his first major leading role in a long time. He will do the Iron Man franchise proud... I can't wait until May. Do you think there will be a London premier?

Jake in my old school tie *deep sigh* - thanks for honouring St Chad's man! As for the plaids... I'm convinced that he's been wearing non-fashoinable things to p*ss people off eg. plaids, crocs etc .. and suddenly, they've become fashion items. He doesn't strike me as a 'dedicated follower of fashion' (ok, the pantomine can begin now hehe).

But now you've put the image in my mind of Jake wearing a kilt! You've gotta have the legs for it. Well, if Becks, Vin Diesel, Samuel L Jackson and Mel Gibson can do it and pull it off (well not Vin Diesel) I guess I could imagine our Jakey in a kilt ... at a stretch.

....And Maggie... doesn't she look so beautiful. She just shines with the glow of motherhood. Even Gwyneth looks good. Liv (beautiful Arwen), of course, always has that inner beauty quality about her. The three earth mothers. I understand that Gwyneth had been suffering from depression and post-natal depression with her last child. Wasn't she pregnant whilst she was filming Proof? If that's the case then I am so sympathetic to her position and to try to carry on filming whilst in that state - the love scenes couldn't have been easy to do.

*good girl* said...

"I think we all just got tired of seeing Jake in that big over shirt. With him, the less clothes the better. Can a get an AMEN?"

;D Amen sisterl! And hope you're doing fine and the hearth stops shaking there :)

And Paulh, no offense was meant to plaid, kilt or tartan, about which I know nearly nothing (actually I don't even know if they mean the same thing), especially their history :) I just am not a big fan of flannel shirts and squared patterns on clothes in general :P

:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia :D Sounds a bit scary all this talk of floods and shifting ground.

I'm glad to hear you're in a safe place, Bird Girl :\

Hi Sheba - Ywp, I'm almost certain there'll be a London premiere of Ironman. RDJ and Gwyneth are guests on Jonathan Ross a week on Friday. I think it's going to be a great movie. I'm not a big fan of Gwyneth but I have hope!

I agree with jake not being a dedicated follower of fashion - which is good - and I can just imagine him not caring or praying games. All well and good so long as it doesn't include crocs and lumberjack shirts! A kilt is one thing - and obviously desirable - but a lumberjack plaid shirt is a different kettle of fish all together!

Hi there Good Girl! Love how we can have a discussion here on the history of tartan :D

Hope everyone's having a good evening - with no tremors :)

paulh said...

I buy dressy shirts whenever possible. Even my casual plaids have to be Van Heusen or Saville Row (a Macy brand). The one I wore to the Martha's Vineyard poetry session was Stanley Blacker. The people who want lumberjack styles (yuck!) can go to Eddie Bauer or Bob's Stores. I would wear Ralph Lauren if they were permanent press, but they're not. :-(

I just got back from seeing "The Visitor." Very sad!
