Without doubt, the movie and computer gaming worlds today have been lapping up the rumour that Jake Gyllenhaal could become Persian Prince Dastan. I know this particular Gyllenhaalic can hardly stand the wait to see if Jake will be seen parkouring his way around the minarets and fortresses and date palms of 9th-century Persia. To get in the mood, here is a 'trailer' for the Prince of Persia, Sands of Time film using scenes from the game - just to see what we might expect.
Of course there are concerns - and, if you click this link, you'll see the biggie. Yes, although this film could show Jake at his most athletic, at his most swashbuckling, at his most exotic, at his least dressed, it could also continue the terrible and disturbing trend that we have observed during much of Jake's acting career - the compulsion of directors to mess with what is perfect - Jake's hair.
A recent post here outlined some of the major problems that Jake's hair has faced over the last six or seven years - most notably, suffering through Bubble Boy, being tortured through Moonlight Mile and being banished altogether in Jarhead. Even Donnie Darko and Rendition weren't blamess.
In 2001, Jake and Richard Kelly were interviewed by Sharon Waxman at the Sundance Film festival about Donnie Darko and Jake's hair was an issue: 'Richard Kelly: You're the one with the dark last name Donnie. Jake Gyllenhaal: You created him. Richard Kelly: You dyed your hair black, dude. Jake Gyllenhaal: I just showed up and read the lines. Maybe that day I showed up with my hair dyed black, you were really freaking out, but you were calm about the whole thing -- 'Could we make this just a little lighter, please?" Sharon Waxman: Why freak out because you dyed your hair? Jake Gyllenhaal: Because it's Donnie Darko, not Donnie Dark-hairo. I'm not a cartoon character.'
Jake may not be a cartoon character but let's hope he may soon be a videogame character.
It goes on: 'Jake: We went through a hair thing with Donnie Darko and it ended up dark brown. I dyed it pitch black, blue-black for my next movie, "The Bubble Boy" (I totally recommend it). I just love dying my hair. Like Guy Pearce in "Memento" - he has beach blonde hair. Richard: The depth of this discussion is what Sundance is all about. Jake: You don't understand the plight of an actor. You have to change people's opinions of you, and if it means dying your hair - that's the independent spirit. Sharon: You don't get the Hollywood and Vine discussion without a little hair talk.'
When Jake was interviewed by Zodiac legend David Fincher for Interview magazine, the topic turned to Rendition and it is clear that Jake had problems with his lovely locks during filming: 'Most of that movie was just Dion trying to make sure my hair didn't look too big.' Dion Beebe was the director of photography for Rendition while Eamon Hughes (wasn't he a Welsh rugby player?) had the enviable task of keeping Jake's hair under control. I see that Eamon looked after Cate Blanchett's hairdo for Notes on a Scandal.
It's very interesting to read the update from Cinematical today. While Disney were quick to quash the Orlando Bloom rumour 'Cinematical has talked with a Disney rep who would not deny nor confirm this rumor. Their "you'll see soon enough" stance leads us to believe there might be some truth here. Oh, and expect both leads to be announced at the same time.' One wonders what is going on behind the scenes and, with Nailed due to get going in the next few days, time could be short. We may know sooner rather than later. In the meantime, I have been inspired to get the game out again and make a study of its wardrobe and hair while evading collapsing rooves and poisonous snakes. And now I'm wondering if Jake likes playing computer games... And is he any good?

Wonderful shots of Jake and his hair. I think he looks good with his hair like it was for Brokeback. And for that photo of him looking down (when was that taken and where?)
I would like to see him in that Prince of Persia movie, much better than in that Nailed movie (yuck)
I wonder what Jake would look like with long hair tied back in a ponytail
trekfan
Oh my gosh, I see what you mean WDW. When I clicked on the link and saw the 'big hair' I burst out laughing. That is not flattering. However, the longer I looked the more I could see Jake as the Prince. He has the look, colouring, intensity. But, he needs time to master the sword techniques as well as the martial arts to do it justice.
The big hair - definitely no - no wigs!!. A persian prince - definitely yes!
Hi Trekfan :D Those pics are the reason the post is so late as I had so much fun finding shots where Jake looks troubled by his hair. That picture you mention is from the shoot when he was playing the trumpet. I'll find a date and get back to you.
I've now been converted to the Nailed film but the prince of Persia has completely grabbed my attention from the start. I really hope it happens.
I don't want to know what Jake would look like with long hair pulled back in a ponytail!! :D
Hey Sheba! That picture is hysterical. That is soo not a good look! If Jake has to have long hair in this (and I really hope he doesn't!) then please may it not be a wig....
It's definitely got to take some time to master the swordfighting and martial arts. This isn't something you can do straight off - there's not long to the summer and there's Nailed before then. So who knows...
That trailer looks pretty good - is that the trailer for the video game or what's to come in the live action film? My son has that game on PS2 and has been asking me for ages to play with him or watch him play. Now seems like the perfect time to be a better mom *ashamed* :DD
*waves to trekfan* nice to see you here - it's great innit :DD
Hey Sheba - I believe that the 'trailer' was made by a fan of the game wanting to show what the film might be like but having to use scenes from the game. They did a bloody good job :D
I think you should have a go! I've got the first game on PS2 as well as the earlier versions which I've played for years - completely addictive!
Will do, my son will adore me now (at the momemt he's hating on Jake cos he thinks I'm obsessed - ha)
At the moment, anything to avoid the mountain of work I have to do, I am obsessed with the DS game Legend of Zelda so if the Prince of Persia is anything like that, then I'm gonna love it.
How do you find the time to do all that you do an create this great blogg as well?
I sm absolutely over the waterfall when it comes to Jake's hair.
Sniffing Ennis' hair in BBMt is one of my favorite scenes. I cannot imagine you, my darling Paulh, what control! - sitting next to Jake in the Vineyard poetry reading and not SNIFFING HIS HAIR. O God I would even go out of my mind and sniff his pubic hair.
Sorry. I love Jake's Hair. I would pay a million bucks to sniff Jake's hair.
sorry. my passion overocomes me.
Sheba, this could make Jake and you cool for your son :D It's like when I saw Peter the other night and everyone in my life thought it was great and they were saving pictures left right and centre.
I've not played Legend of Zelda myself as I don't have much time for games these days (although I'm desperate to get a Wii but can't afford it - one for the Christmas begging list). But if you like that, I think you'll like the Prince games. I love the whole Persian background and I prefer games without the guns - swords are fine by me ;D
Thanks for that - appreciated. The site does tend to take up a huge proportion of my spare (and smetimes not spare) time but it's well worth it. It's been a year now and I've loved every minute :D (I think Mr WDW would prefer me to spend more time doing the washing up though.... ;D). Thank you :D
Hey passionately Pia! Your passion for Jake's hair (I get the mesage!) was one of the inspirations for this post :D Never apologise for your Jake passion :)
I do pray to the God of my understanding apologizing for loving Jake's hair. I truly cannot imagine any other experience as totally satisfying and sensual.
And I feel obliged to re-iterate my delight in BBMT at seeing Jake sniffing Heath's hair. Im am astoinshed that these men survived the filming. I would not have!
Just sayn'
You bought it up, WDW = its all your fault.
Thanks for all the Jake hair info...and all the fab pics. I am so anxious to see what they are going to do with Jake's hair for Nailed. I am guessing shortish...not too many Senators with long hair...at least not too many that I have seen. As I have made no secret in my comments for this website...I love the shortish hair on Jakey. So...suffice it to say..I am looking forward to any pics from the Nailed shoot. I thought his hair looked great in Rendition, but it would have looked a lot better a bit shorter...:-) I certainly agree with you..PUHLEEZE do not let them do anything funky with his hair should he become the Prince of Persia...thanks again for this wonderful post..
Michele
Pia, I accept full responsibility, gladly :D
Hi Michele! Oh, how much do I want to see pics from Nailed. I just loved the pics of Jake on the set of Brothers - I do hope some get out from Nailed. I think short hair too. And clean shaven. Please, please - should Jake be the Prince of Persia - may he be a short-haired Prince of Persia :D I'm glad you liked the pics - it was a lot of fun picking them :)
Hello, Wet Dark!
I think I am the only person who does not want to see the Jake this movie.
An adaptation of video-game not left me happy!
Jake has talent and can do much better movies!
This type of film is better in actors such as Orlando or Josh Hartnett
Its been a turrible hard day for what reason y'all do not need to know but Im going to bed soon.
Just saying that I e-mailed picture of you and Peter WDW and friends were mightily impressed by the cool and elegance of both of you! also kudos to me whom they think is some kinda idiot "fan". (they're at Oxford effing Univ, you ignorant dildos!)
oh well.
weather warms, frogs croakin' from the bayou, where is donnie darko?
Oh Pia, so sorry to hear you've had such a terrible day :( I really hope tomorrow will be better (thank heavens it's Friday).
That's so cool to hear you sent on the pic of me and Peter. I now have this picture on my desktop everywhere - here and at work. I look at it and I get a smile so broad on my face :D There is nothing idiotic about being a 'fan' of these guys. I think we're pretty intelligent people (at least when I haven't drunk too much tequila). I hope Peter liked my town.
The daffs have recovered here from the snow and many of the trees are now sprouting leaves - love this time of year. I reckon Donnie Darko is on his way south to the Carolinas and I wish him every success with his new job :D
Sleep well and have a better day tomorrow :)
Ohhhhhhhhhh . . . I read your post quickly, WDW, and I thought it said Jake at his most erotic, but then I realized it said Jake at his most exotic. ;) lol
Oh.My.G*d. I just watched the short clip, and the opening scene - to see Jake like that - chest plate, head covering (not sure what it is called - keffiyeh?), beard and those eyes of his - G*d help me. ;) I think they should go for it and have his hair as long as was worn in the time period, and like the character wears it, he'll be beautiful. I've always wondered what Jake would look like with long hair. And he definitely has the right deltoids for it!
Sheba, I think that's great that you're playing the game with your son, I think that's the kind of movie it will be, one that the family can all share in the enjoyment of. I love to watch movies with kids and enjoy my inner child, it's pretty funny when my niece would say to me "Auntie, it's only a movie!" ;)
Hey Bertie - I suppose when it coms to Jake and the Prince you can swap and change exotic and erotic :D We need to see Jake in this film, that is for sure. I don't know - if I see Jake with his own hair long as it always is in these games then maybe it'll be OK but I don't know til I see it! But if filming is soon after Nailed finishes Jake won't have much time to grow it, so I'm hoping short, contemporary and sexy. I know I'm talking as if we know for sure Jake will do this - I'm just hoping!
That's such a good point - a film like this would be one of the few films Jake's done of late that everyone can see. And while I like the idea of the X and R rated scenes of Nailed, I do like the idea of an open for all adventure romp - just sensational!
All this talk of aunties - love and congratulations to my step sister who gave birth to a little girl today :D
Ohhhhh, that's so nice. Congratulations to you and your stepsister! :)
Thanks Bertie :D
Morning everybody - Friday at last! Have a good one :D
Morning everyone!
I am back to British soil finally and obviously missed all the wonderful discussion of Jake as Prince of Persia (I was struggling with back pain on the so-called newly improved Economy seat, flying over Russia).
But I'll never get tired of talking about Jake's hair! so well done, WDW! Although I have to say, I prefer Jake to keep his hair dark... I think he looks absolutely amazing in jet black colour, brings out his baby blues even more.
Am I excited about PoP? I have close to zero knowledge about video-games and the only reason that would force me to buy a ticket and sit through a Jerry Bruckheimer blockbuster is to have Jake starring in it. So yeah, well done, they found my weakness! I'll be glad to give them my money and lapping up all the merchandise the marketing team comes up with!
Welcome home Winterbird :D Take it easy and relax and do some Jaking... That's an idea - I'd not thought about merchandising - we could have a Jake Doll!
Hi, Anonymous. I was trying hard to let Jake have some space. He was nice enough to insist that I remain on the sofa, and his mother and sister were already there. Four can be a bit much for a sofa.
I once had a dream in which I was sniffing Heath Ledger's hair. His hair just looked so silky and soft in the movie, so my subconscious must have picked up on that.
As for "Prince of Persia," I'm grateful for this discussion, because I get to trot out a wonderful pun:
"One man's Mede is another Man's Persian." -- Lorenz Hart.
;-)
"One man's Mede is another Man's Persian." -- Lorenz Hart.
thanks for the above, Paul. tee hee!
Hey there everyone - the weekend at last :D
Paul - thanks for that, I think :DD (I love to hear you talk about the MV experience :))
Hi Tickled Pink Pia - sounds like a good state to be in :D
Arrrggghhhh, the Blogger comment-eater got me again! SO frustrating!
Oh dear WDW :-( I'm afraid I had to turn the clip off half way through. The fan who compiled it had indeed done a great job,but as it got steadily more melodramatic and preposterous I was losing the will to live. Methinks I have misplaced my inner child ;-)
I can quite well see that Jake would look utterly gorgeous in the likely costumes for a film such as this (and out of them),especially if they were to keep his hair fairly short and no beard(!), but I'm sorry to say that to me the project has "turkey" written all over it.
I've been trying to imagine Jake reading the script for this and getting the emotional connection with the story which he has often said is the crucial factor when he is deciding whether of not to take a role and I'm just not seeing it. Mind you,it wouldn't be the first time that Jake has done something completely contrary to my expectations, and he's not always the easiest bloke to read, which is what probably keeps us fascinated and trying to do just that!
As for Jake's hair I think it would look best with my fingers in it (yes Paul,or my nose!)but that really is the stuff of complete fantasy!
Hey all!
Happy weekend to you lovelies. :)
Loving the hair conversation. I love Jake's hair best a tad bit longer than it is now and a bit of face stubble. *swoon* He has such gorgeous hair! I too want to run my hands thru it....sigh. Don't think I want it super long though. Not sure how I feel about this new movie possibility but i love all the talk about it. Jake usually makes very wise decisions so I trust him. :D
Congrats, WDW to your step sister. Aww a baby is always precious.
Also, have to wish Jake and the Nailed folks all the best of luck! Seems like they started filming already.
Afternoon,
I'm sharing you and Peter with my desktop and my son. You look so happy. I love this post and Jake's hair. I wonder what his mom will say about his potential Persia hair. I read she didn't much care for his Jarhead *thud* look.
I've felt lousy this whole month--11 days so far-- and must stay away from sites that much include negative Jake critiques. My blood pressure can't handle it at all:) I literally go nuts.
I hope you feel better Pia:) So glad you're back from Russia Winterbird:)
have a great weekend WDW:)
xoxoxo
s
(((Sass))) boy do I agree with you on not tolerating some other sites, (((Pia))) and a welcome back (((Winterbird))).
I'm thinking a little bit longer than BAFTA/Rendition hair (my favorite), and a little bit of stubble? Although he looks good with his hair any way, I think. :)
Hi there everyone! Sorry I've not been around, I've been sidetracked by listening to this Zodiac feature - I've put a link in the new post. Very hypnotic.
Hi Nadine! I think that you have to go with this project and appreciate its obvious advantages - ie the billowing shirt (optional) and the leaping about and the all-action Jake. I can see why Jake would want to make a film as fun as this sounds. And I've had such a lot of fun talking about it!
Good to see you, Get Real! Ooh I don't know about this long hair. I love Jake's hair as it is right now. But if he takes the role and it starts in the summer, surely it couldn't get too long... Be fun to watch him as the time approaches. I reckon things are going on in SC now too although I suppose they do quite a bit of preliminary photography.
Hi Sass - sorry to hear you've been feeling bad :( That's so nice that you have my pic with Peter saved. I have that now as my desktop on my laptop, my PC and on my work PC. I smile whenever I see it. I saw my boss looking up Peter Sarsgaard on IMDb today :)
Hey there Bertie - yes a little bit of stubble and just enough hair to flit through the fingers :D
Can I just say that you lot are lovely? :D
