Today, 4 April 2008, if all had been right with the world, should have been Heath Ledger's 29th birthday. But, because things are broken in a way that is impossible to fathom, Heath isn't here. Speaking as someone who was not fortunate enough to have met Heath in person, but as just a movie-lover, changed forever by Heath's embodiment of Ennis Del Mar in Brokeback Mountain, today's words for Heath are better coming from someone who was lucky enough to have had that privilege. This is what Brokeback screenwriter Diana Ossana said about Heath in the March 11 issue of Advocate:
'Heath was an old soul in a young man's frame, extremely masculine, extremely competent in all things, and yet sensitive beyond belief. In person Heath was animated and kinetic and full of life, far different from the character he portrayed in Brokeback Mountain. He was always disheveled, unconcerned with his appearance, because - like my writing partner, Larry McMurty - Heath lived in his head. Heath was a pure actor, much like Larry is a pure writer, and I was moved by the similarities between these two seemingly very different men.'
'One of my most endearing memories of working with Heath on set was the day we filmed the final scene in Brokeback. Before the first take, Heath walked over to me, a big smile on his face, and said, "I think you're going to like what I've done with this scene." Then he headed inside that bleak little trailer house, and the cameras rolled. I watched the monitor as Ennis opened his tiny closet door and revealed the two shirts he had found hidden inside Jack's childhood bedroom, like skins, one inside the other... and realized that Heath, as Ennis, had chosen to reverse the order of those shirts, with his on the outside, embracing Jack's. Such was Heath's commitment to the truth of our story and to the rawness and depth of his portrayal. Afterward our grizzled and thoroughly macho first assistant director marched over to me, bent down, and whispered in my ear, "Diana, I've worked in this business 50 years. This is the first time an actor's brought a tear to my eye."'
'Heath was generous and dear, painfully shy and gifted, and I will miss him for the rest of my days.'
Michelle Williams was quoted in the April issue of Interview: 'I think that the interesting thing about Heath, which maybe people have only really fully discovered in his death, is how vulnerable he was. You can pick up on it in his performances, but it's easy to overlook because he was so physical and beautiful and strong and masculine. But there was always that underlying sensitivity. That's who he was.'
To mark Heath's birthday, and a TV showing of Brokeback Mountain, a New Zealand site today listed 'Ten things you didn't know about Brokeback'. One of them was new to me: 'After completion of the movie, Brokeback writer Annie Proulx sent both lead actors an original, autographed copy of her story. When she signed Jake's copy she wrote "To Jake...", but when she signed the copy for Heath, she accidentally wrote "To Ennis…" After continuing her personal message, she realized her mistake - but decided to leave it there. In a private screening later in Hollywood, she reflected that she left his signed copy that way because she felt Heath Ledger had embodied Ennis in every way she had wrote him.'

This post is one of your finest among many, WDW, sensitiveity, choice of quotes, your own commenta and pictures. I have forwarded it to a few friends, never done this before.
Simply beautiful. Thank you so much.
I see you where posting the same time I was. What a lovely tribute on a sad day.
The only thing I keep thinking today is, "Come on cowboy, it's time to go". I keep hearing it over and over in my head.
WDW,
Thanks for this, a beautiful tribute to Heath on his birthday. I enjoyed reading the part about Annie Proulx signing Heath's copy of Wyoming Stories "To Ennis" because Heath embodied him so. We'll never forget him. :')
I've been thinking about Heath today, and not only Heath, but all my friends that Heath with Jake brought me too - and a lot of my Heathen friends are really suffering day by day and I think about them and worry about them and want them to know that Jakers like me are with them.
Thanks so much Pia - that means such a lot to me, it really does. It was very hard thinking how to do the post so that's kind of you to give such feedback.
Hi Bird Girl - I just answered your other comment :) Thanks for coming back!
Hey there Bertie - I hadn't heard that about Annie's signing of Heath's book and it's really affected me reading that. And Diana's words were absolutely beautiful - not surprisingly from such a gifted writer.
Oops, forgot to add - what a magnificent cover of The Advocate of Heath. I'm going to have to buy it as a keepsake. :)
Oh yes, Bertie, that's a fantastic cover. I bought it when I was in LA and I saved it for posting on a suitable occasion - this seemed like just such an occasion :)
(((WDW))) Thank you SO much for this post! I can hardly see straight to type this and I don't care who calls me a drama queen ;-/
I've been wearing stripes for Heath today and lit a candle for him,but decided that what I really HAD to do was watch "Brokeback" from start to finish again,as some kind of connection with and tribute to Heath on his birthday.
Well I left Ennis in that sad little trailer just a short time ago and it made me cry more than ever today - today I wasn't just crying for Jack and for Ennis, but for Heath, his friends and family, his beautiful little girl, for Michelle and for Jake in particular. Statement or no statement,I think we all know how Heath's birthday will be privately poignant and painful for Jake,if it makes us this sad.
Then I came here...and as Pia said, you have chosen just the right words, the most fitting and truly beautiful quotes and the most exquisite pictures to encapsulate Heath, the actor and the man.I'm blubbering again, but I'm in no way ashamed of it.
We owe both Jake and Heath so much, for BECOMING Jack Twist and Ennis Del Mar,for creating something so special that it drew so many kindred spirits together and led to so many life-changing connections and invaluable friendships.
Thank you again for these beautiful remembrances of Heath on our behalf - a beautiful bittersweet reminder of what all who loved him have lost.
Nadine - thank you so much for that comment, which has left me kind of mushy. That's a great tribute to Heath to watch BBM all the way through. I'm not able to do that myself today but I aim to do that over the next couple of days. You're right, what better way to celebrate what Heath gave us. And I wouldn't be me if I didn't think of Jake as well today along with all of us :)
WDW -- thank you.
Beautiful post, WDW. Not a day has gone by since 22nd January when Heath hasn't been in my thoughts, but today, like all of us, I've been feeling his loss more than ever. To think he would have been just 29...it's so wrong:( But you and Nadine are right, we have so much to thank him for, our lives are so much richer for what he brought to us in Brokeback Mountain and for that I'll always be thankful. I just hope he's at peace now, wherever he is.
WDW, that was so lovely of you to pick up The Advocate for a post about Heath. I just have to say how much I agree with you all - the first time I watched Brokeback after Heath's death, I just marvelled at his acting and smiled through my tears, at parts of the film I hadn't before. It's like that everytime I watch it, something different gets me. The second time I watched it after Heath was gone, I cried just about all the way through it. :) The dozy embrace scene never ceases to get me, and that look of love and longing on Jack's face as Ennis leaves is just incredible, how Jake could convey all of that, and Heath too. It's truly an amazing film, everything coming together at the same time, short story, script, score, direction, cinematorgraphy, amazing actors, costuming, etc. etc. Heath and Jake are just amazing together, I could never imagine anyone else as Ennis and Jack. Two complementary masculine opposites - one dark hair, blue eyes, open and intense, the other blond, brown eyes, quiet and but equally as intense in his own way. Perfection!
Beckela, thank you *)
TL, that's such a lovely comment - Heath was so young but it's amazing that at that young age he did something to leave his mark - very unusual.
Hi Bertie - I watched BBM all the way through a couple of days after 22 January and I was surprised how comforting I found it. Since then I've seen it again and it was back to the pain of the Jack and Ennis story - just as Heath and Jake intended. But ometimes it's hard to understand the mixed feelings you get from this film. But it's such a tribute to Heath.
I love your description of how Heath/Ennis and Jake/Jack are such perfect complements - really love that :D
WDW, this is just an extraordinarily lovely tribute. Thank you. I had not seen Diana Ossana's article before. It was a lovely expression. Knowing him only thru his work and thru his public persona, I can only say,
that I miss him, very much. It isn't something I will ever "get used to."
Bobbyanna, good to see you :) I loved the quote from Diana Ossana - I couldn't imagine a better tribute to Heath than her words. I had no idea that it was Heath's idea to swap the shirts.
Thanks for this great post for Heath's birthday WDW. :)
Sandy
Lovely posting WDW..it is a fitting bit of words for Heath. You know, even though I am a huge Jake fan, I always thought that Heath was the best thing about BBM. He truly was Ennis...in that I agree with Annie P. You never felt like he was acting. He made you feel Ennis whether you wanted to or not. I enjoyed all the performances, but Heath's stood out above all the rest. Too bad he was not rewarded with an oscar. hugs...
Michele
Hi Sandy - thanks so much for the comment :)
Thanks Michele. I wish Heath had had some recognition for Ennis in his lifetime too but what a legacy. Thanks for commenting :)
Thanks for this extraordinarily moving post WDW.
The first time I saw Heath out of a movie context at the Oprah with Jake I remember I was struck by his shyness and his vulnerability so rare in a successful performer and such a beautiful man, and so complementary with Jake's lively and confident behaviour. I rember I thought they were a perfect couple of friends. They were perfect together.
Even if they had shared only that professional experience together, they'd have been bond forever.
Besides, I often thought about Heath as 'The Other' the one who, if I did't get so lost in Jake's beauty and charms, I could have been crazy about...
A beautiful tribute for a beautiful soul. Thank you WDW and thank you Heath for all that you gave us.
the lack of an Oscar doesn't bother me too much -it never seemed to bother Heath and the Academy are not all there is to the movie world. Heath's performance stands as an amazing legacy. One of the most moving performances ever. In fact for me the 'one of' is not necessary. No statue would be adequate anyway.
Love you, Heath and thanks mate.

Hi there Xenia - Heath and jake were perfectly cast together for Brokeback - couldn't have been bettered.
Thanks Get Real - and yes, thanks Heath :)
Oh Ruby, you set me off with that comment! And that's all I can say xx
Thank you Kate - a perfect post and birthday tribute to Heath. xx
Thank you Nouskie - feeling a bit emotional again - time for a nightcap before bed :)
Thank you WDW for that beautiful tribute to Heath.
WDW I can't thank you enough for posting this Birthday tribute to Heath. It is so sad he is not here to celebrate with us.
This was so beautiful. So many had nice things to say about Heath. He was a great man, a wonderful actor who will be truly missed. But forever in our hearts
Trekfan
Also I watched Brokeback today, I haven't watched it in 6 months. I was surprised I didn't cry, though I did feel myself tear up in places. I kept thinking what a wonderful job Heath did portraying Ennis. He became Ennis and everytime I see Ennis Del Mar I think of Heath and his performance. He embodied Ennis so that you didn't see Heath anymore but Ennis. (he does that with every character he played)
Ennis will always live on and so will Heath
Trekfan
Thanks Anon, that's kind of you to comment :)
Hi Trekfan - I feel really sad that Heath isn't around today or on other days. But although I'm weepy, I do have some happy thoughts about Heath today and I feel grateful for what we have. But I am very weepy. There is so much that's good for us and everyone to say about Heath - what an extraordinary and well-loved man. You're right - Heath's films are such a memorial.
Trekfan - I'm glad you saw Brokeback again today. It's a great way to think of Heath while being lost in the story of Jack and Ennis.
Back again and still feeling fragile,(((WDW)))although I'm sure I'm not alone.
Do you know what really broke me up as the credits rolled on "Brokeback" today and those two iconic songs ripped me to shreds again? Suddenly it flashed back into my mind how many times, before January 22nd 2008, I had hoped that one day we might just get lucky and they would release a Collector's edition of "BBM",with a joint commentary from Jake and Heath among the Bonus features. Talk about the dream ticket. It hit me like a punch that this can never happen now and the tragedy of Heath's passing felt more acute than ever. So sad....
sorry to set you off K. xxxx
Beautiful and fitting post, Wdw and lovely comments everyone. Y'all are great.
Time for bed here. Goodnight lovelies.
(((Nadine))) I was really counting on a change of heart and a special BBM DVD edition too :( I suppose what we have is it now. Thanks for the email :)
That's all right Rubes - you can buy me a drink to make up for setting off the waterworks :D Yep, the comments have been great - a huge comfort :) A nightcap and then bed for me too.
Heath is the one who changed the shirts around? Wow................. I'm speechless. I didn't know that.
Thanks WDW as always, a beautiful post.
- Libby
WDW,
This is such a beautiful post on a sad day for us all. TY.
love and hugs to everyone.
nite nite

Greetings from Hong Kong... thanks for the beautiful post, WDW.... what a lovely tribute.
Annie is so right, Ennis is Heath or Heath is Ennis...
I am going to be posting at weird hours these days, have a good weekend ahead, everyone
Morning everyone - good to see you all :D
Hi there Libby -I had no idea about the shirts either - that scene will never be the same for me again now and it's made me rethink Ennis. I can't wait to see the film again.
Morning Sass - I'm so glad you liked the post. Have a good day :)
Heyyy! Greetings to Winterbird in Hong Kong! I hope you're having a wonderful time - is it hot? How's the shopping and dining? I'm very nosey!
I'm glad you liked the tribute. And I'm looking forward to hearing from you from the land of skyscrapers. Take care :D
I'll be popping in at odd times today myself as I'm very lucky to be having the day out in London with Ruby and Anouska - and although snow's on the way again it's sunny at the moment. Have a great day everyone :D
Snow, down here?
You didn't know about the shirts, WDW? I'm genuinely surprised!
See you later x
I didn't want to come to here yesterday selfishly because I wouldn't have been able to sleep. As usual WDW an excellent tribute for us all. Thank You. My thoughts are with Michelle and Matilda right now.
It seemed he was everywhere yesterday, on dvd shelves, magazine covers and its like he's still here but somewhere where we can't speak to him - I can't explain it (denial I guess).
When Annie Proulx called Heath Ledger a legend during a red carpet interview - she didn't know how prophetic her words would be.
My impressions of him was that he was subtle, understated, enigmatic, complex, undefinable and would have absolutely detested the media speculation surrounding his too young life. I love you Heath, and I didn't even know you nor you me. But, we are forever connected because of what Brokeback meant to me and did for me and now what you meant to me. Isn't that what we as human beings are supposed to do - make that real connection?
See, I've started blubbing already... (for his girls)Please can I share these with you all:
He is Gone
You can shed tears that he is gone,
Or you can smile because he lived,
You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see him
Or you can be full of the love that you shared,
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember him and only that he is gone
Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on,
You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn your back,
Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.
(David Harkins)
Sheba what a beautiful, heartfelt post, reflecting what so many of us feel...and what a beautiful poem. I'm going to save it because it has so much wisdom and comfort in it.
And Anouska,I share your incredulity that WDW didn't know about the shirts - reminded me that she's just human after all and not the goddess that we all think she is! ;-)xxxxx
Hope WDW,Anouska and Ruby find a nice warm pub today to shelter from the snow and do some serious Jaking. ((((Hugs girls)))
Lovely tribute To Heath thanks WDW I new it was his B'day soon so been thinking of him - and Brokeback! You've done a lovely job. He is sadly missed, such a great and fine actor and he was took away to soon from the world.
Too true Cassie and a strong appreciation for the work he has left behind. Films I yet have the pleasure of watching but something very good to look forward to.
Thanks Nadine, poetry like film can touch you personally in a way that few could and have the right to understand. This one particularly came to mind about the type of guy he was and that he had a sense of destiny.... who knows:
"I expect to pass through this life but once. Therefore, if there be any kindness I can show, or any good thing I can do for another human being, let me do it now, for I shall not pass this way again."
- William Penn
And that is evident in the thousands of tributes still coming in especially of people who knew him personally. I'm not trying to cannonise him or make out that he was the perfect man in the world, but within all that complexity and turmoil essentially his sweetness, compassion and honesty shone through any awkward interviews or meetings he may have had.
Right! I'm having a 'carpe diem' moment so, Heath inspired, I'm off to do work I have been putting off for weeks (a bit of harvesting). Have a goodday y'all.
Snow in London??? when i left it was 17 degrees! well, where I am is 26 degrees... I am enjoying the sunshine while it lasts. I hope you and the Jaking gang have a good time today :)
My friends told me Batman was filming here in Hong Kong couple of months ago (on top of one of the skyscrapers), but none of friends is sure if the scene has Joker in it... but seemed like Heath wasn't here.
I found "Lust, Caution" on the in-flight movie menu...
hi everybody - thanks so much for the comments and Sheba the poem is beautiful. Having a lovely day with anouska and ruby - toasted heath and jake and all of us see you soon !
That was a beautiful tribute to Heath. His father organized a beautiful farewell for him. Then dark clouds began to gather over the family...
I remember a beloved cousin who died much too young (18 going on 19), and my own family was rocked. Some of us took years to get over it. The pain is unbelievable unless you've gone through a comparable experience. [The cousin's sister and father are now estranged, and the mother divorced her way out of the family long ago. I doubt that they are weak people, it's just that some things are so severe as to make people break. :-( ]
All of us are lucky that Heath left a sizable record of his work, that people can enjoy watching.
Oh man come on its time for a little Jake dirty dancing I will survive it's ten fifteen london times, where are our favorite babes?
Im watching Blade Runner final cut but it's making me nervous.
just sayin'
Hi Pia - this babe is home ... and Ruby should be next, but WDW is having some problems with trains. I expect she'll still manage to post something cogent and interesting though when she finally gets in. No idea how she does that. Hope you're well sweetie! xx
Thank you dearly, Anouska! Im on South Beach diet and not supposed to drink alcohol for two weeks, nor eat chocolate. Must admit to a Sat. night freak out. (black and green orange flavored 70 percent cocoa is the greatest!)
I hope you guys came up with some imaginative solutions to population control and global warming and serenity in times of turmoil.
p.s. I dont know how WDW does it, either. She's an effing genius! And Im not kidding!
Pia, the solutions you mention are pretty much all we talk about when we're together *
South Beach diet :(
South Beach diet no good? I lost thirty pounds a couple of years ago. How to keep hot and sexy - not ready yet for being "comfy" - any advice?
Not sure I'm qualified to give advice on that :) The frown was for diets, full stop :)
Nite p, I am turning in - WDW should be here soon.*
'nite, Anouska. (cussin the time difference) (:
pia speakin, above.
Hi there! Phew - got home! At last! My train was replaced by a bus and then I had to get a cab and it all took nearly three hours. But what a lovely day - thank you very much Anouska and Ruby for your wonderful company and thanks Anouska for the cosmopolitans :D
Back in a mo - just pouring a glass of whisky :D
Woof woof woof chasing my tail in happiness you are home!
do you need hot water bottle in hour bed? warm furry body? devotion? unadulterated love and admiration? (or maybe just some sleep)
you got it. zxzxxxxxxx
pia mia
Ahh thanks so much Pia - it's been a trek and a half and it's freezing out there - I can't believe we're due snow tomorrow :( But I've got a whisky, warming up and feeling all the better for seeing you :D Er - wouldn't mind the warm, furry body - can you send Jake over please, like right now! :)
It's after midnight here so I'll do a new post in the morning - a full day of Jaking ahead tomorrow, a very happy thought :D
o warm furry body I was thinking of atticus, but okay I'll take Jake. :)
gotta stop livn' on Greenwich Time.
so Im goin to bed, anyway, and Im gonna go to bed early, thinkin about furry Jake, Im really freaked out by the commentary on Bladerunner. its really scsry. I used to love this film.
you did so a beautiful job for Heath, WDW - sleep well and very well! xxxxxx
Thank you so much Pia - g'night and happy dreams (furry Jake will be in my thoughts tonight that's for sure). I love Bladerunner btw, I've not yet seen this new cut of it. Sleep well :)
Morning everyone:D I woke up late this morning and did not expect to be waking up to 4 inches of thick sonow out there! Unbelievable in southern England at this time of year. Jake would love it!
What a wonderful report and deserving tribute to Heath, WDW!
Thank you so much :)
