A strange thing happened on the way to the office this morning...
Little did I know when I set off for work this morning that I would be able to disprove the theory that a certain movie is only being filmed in locations beginning with W. Demonstrating (with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer) that it's a small world, I turned the corner by my office and saw a whole load of movie trailers, along with a double decker bus serving as a canteen. We're used to filmsets in Oxford (I've seen more movie stars here than I have in LA) and so I approached the security guard - the one with 'Manchester United FC' tattooed onto his neck - and asked what was going on. He said he didn't know if it was a movie or a TV show but it was called 'An Education'. You could have knocked me down with a feather.
To cut a long story short - well, I won't because I'm going to keep talking about it - several hours later, this is how it ended up. Me and Peter Sarsgaard - don't you think we look good together?
At lunchtime, having sat patiently at my desk as long as I possibly could, and dragging along a not-very-reluctant friend with me (who, being a glamorous sort, managed to get quite a bit of information from one of the movie roadies), I headed off to the trailers to find where the shoot was taking place. My friend learned that we had to go left, then right, then left, then right, then right again. This led us to one of Oxford's most familiar filming locations, the Radcliffe Camera, which, to be honest, was a disappointment to me as I thought it would be nice if crews looked elsewhere for a beautyspot as we have so many.
We went over and spent a very enjoyable hour watching one scene being rehearsed down an alley by Brasenose College. This scene featured two girls dolled up to their early 1960s' best, bouffants and all, leaning on a car, while student-types walked by. It was fascinating to see all the attention hair and wardrobe were getting - photographs were used to ensure that continuity was preserved in the arrangement of the hair. One of the girls had a lot of trouble with her shoes and she took them off whenever she could. Otherwse, there were extras passing by on foot or on bicycle, dressed as students would 40 years ago or so. To be honest, it was hard telling them apart from the observers, and I'm not kidding.
After work on this beautiful sunny day I headed back to the Camera (this is a beautiful round building which acts as a library as well as a favourite site for youngsters in centuries past to hurl themselves off the top of) and watched the preparation for a scene in which the young lovely young actress Carey Mulligan cycled past the Bridge of Sighs. She was accompanied by an extra, a student, whose friends were standing behind me and kept trying to put him off.
The sun was bright today and apparently there was too much sun in the shot and so they had to wait a few minutes before what the director called 'The Peter Shot'. That got my attention. I turned round and there was Peter standing by some old cars, by the Bridge of Sighs and an old newspaper stand. I took his picture and, because the filming was held up for the sun, I decided to walk over and say a few words to him, along the lines of how thrilled I was to see him and that I had seen him in Toronto and got his autograph.
Peter was very kind, shaking my hand, and - completely staying in character, speaking with an impeccable English accent (it was weird, I have to tell you, to not hear the beautiful voice we're so used to from Peter) - said how great that was. I asked if I could take his picture and he suggested we could do better than that and he called a guy over to take our picture together and I got an arm put round me and he got one round him. I asked him if he was in Oxford for longer and he said for only one day. I told him how pleased I was that it was so sunny for him and that he'd made my perfect day. He laughed, shook my hand again, and I went off. I couldn't beat that moment.
So they're only in Oxford for one day. I tried but failed to find out where they are tomorrow but really I don't think I care too much. Oxford is a beautiful city, especially when it's bathed in sun as it was today, but today it looked even more stunning than usual.
I realise I have written a whole post and not mentioned Jake Gyllenhaal's name. Oops - no I haven't. Thank you, Peter, for being so kind to me even though you were in character and had your mind on work. You were lovely to me in Toronto and you were just wonderful today. To say you made my day would be as banal as saying Monday follows Sunday - you absolutely made my day. Thank you!
By the way, please take pity on me - I wasn't expecting to be photographed with an international movie star today! All pictures by WDW.

OMG you found him - well done you. xxxx
*regrets not being able to get out at lunchtime, grump*
WOOOW! That is so cool. I am so happy to hear that he is a gentlemen. You are the best. :)
I can't believe it, Ruby! At lunch Peter was nowhere to be seen (so you wouldn't have seen him at lunch anyway so don't worry about it). I only went back on the offchance and it was such a beautiful evening. I am so excited now though - I need booze - strong booze :D
omg omg omg!!! How wonderful wdw! :)
Thanks Bird Girl! It was so exciting. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw all the film stuff this morning. I knew it had to be An Education. Peter is an absolute gentleman. It was very strange hearing him talk with an Englis accent though!
Welcome wdj! Thanks - it's amazing. I may not calm down for quite a while so I'm grateful to you all for keeping me company :)
I am so excited for you I feel like I need a drink as well. ;)
btw, you look fabulous dahling!
Great that he kept the Brit accent :D
Hey thanks - I wish I'd had my hair done now - you're not supposed to see me looking so blurgh! Peter was sooooo handsome :D
Can - someone - get - me - a - drink - it only happened at 6pm!
You BOTH look gorgeous!
Thank you, Pia! I wish I could take him home to my mum's for tea :D
Double champagne coobla for you my girl. Well done. Peter seemed so gracious and accommodating. How were you so calm and composed and not asking babling questions like is Maggie and Ramona here with you? or can I give you a kiss and ask you to pass it on to Jake for me? :DD.
The picture's great, I can see the sheer delight on your face.
That is an adorable picture, WDW. I like Peter a lot as an actor, and you look really nice standing next to him. Peter has a reputation for disappearing into the roles he plays, hence not a lot of fans. But he really deserves to have a lot of fans, because he's brought so much to the movies that he's made...
Oh, WDW, I'm SO happy for you! You were great, Peter was great and kudos to you for being so calm and together. I would start giggling or asking about Jake or doing something equally stupid;)This is so cool. You've made my day.
Hi Sheba - it wasn't wasy to be calm. Peter really is a big deal to me and so I was shaking! I remembered how kind Peter was to be in Toronto and I wanted to focus on him :D
Hey Paul - I absolutely agree. Peter has had some great roles - he was unbelievable as Troy - and yet he is lost behind his skill. I 'discovered' Peter through jake but since then my admiration has really grown so now I'd promotw any film he were in. I can't wait to see this one!
Peter is such a nice guy.
I'm so glad you liked the pic - I felt very self-conscious putting it on the site so thanks.
Hey Zodiac - I'm so glad this has made your day! Thanks!! I couldn't believe it when Peter was so friendly as to immediately reach for my hand - I may not wash again...
How cool! Congrats on getting the chance to meet Peter. That pic is nifty! It's nice to be able to match a face to WDW. Bet you'll be the first in line to see this movie. lol
Hmmmm nice couple!
Well done for going to talk to him, and how sweet of him to say 'we can do much better' and have your pic taken together.
mouk
Hi Joeann - I do feel a bit self-conscious about outting my face up there but it's just too exciting :D I am so going to be first in line to see this movie!!
Mouk, my Cannes sister! Thanks for commenting. I know, I think we're a lovely couple - I hope Jake won't be jealous... Peter was so kind and he needn't have been.
I wish you were all here right now to take me to the pub!
WDW, you don't know how difficult it was you ringing and me having to say "that's great" and "wow, I'm so happy for you, it's fantastic" when what I wanted to yell was
SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Effing brilliant! Huge congrats on not mentioning Jake, btw.
Peter looks wonderfully early 60s-fabulous; I can't wait to see the film. So difficult to imagine him with an English accent ... mmmm, he's silk and velvet. Congrats again * :)
WOW!! Talk about being in the most right place and the most right time!! You look fabulous with Peter...and I am pleased to hear that he is a gracious person...we know that not all celebs would be bothered to take a pic with the public. Thanks so much for sharing...
Michele
Hey Anouska :D You did very well - I can imagie how hard it was for you at work what with me bursting out all over the place xx I'm just glad you were there to listen and I know you were squuuueeeeeing inside :)
Peter looked gorgeous and the accent was odd - I fear now that I was staring at him as if to say 'what are you saying?'. It's weird as I've spoken to Peter before and this time a completely different voice cam out of him! So fascinating how actors stay in character even when they're being distracted by an insanely excited fan! Yep, silk and velvet. Peter looked great in that suit.
I can't wait for us to see this movie!
Thanks Michelle - Peter was way more generous than I deserved :D I cannot believe my luck sometimes, I really can't.
You've brightened my day WDW and thank you for your generosity in sharing so much. You look divine in that photo and I know how much you must have been shaking.
Peter is such a lovely bright guy. I saw him do a Q & A with Jake and afterwards Jake was chatting with people but Peter got straight in the car because I think he figured nobody would be interested in him in the UK. I tried to find him with my Jarhead script but I decided not to hassle him in the end. I'm such a reserved Brit!!
OMG! I am squeeeeeing all over the place!!! That is totally the sweetest thing!!! I am truly happy for you! Truly. And the pictures are just wonderful. WDW, you are officially my hero. Absolutely. Yesssssss!
You make me feel like I'm right there with you. You have a knack for that, you know? You always make people feel that way. At least you do for me!
(((((((WDW/Peter)))))
I'll calm down...maybe in a few hours!:)
P.S.
Your hair is longer, WDW!!! I like it. You look superb! YOu and Peter look like mates! I am just SO pleased for you. OK. I'm gonna go sit down now. I'm glad to know he is just as nice as he seems. (sigh.)
I want to live in Oxford.
Welcome Dotty! Thanks so much for commenting. Yep I was shaking like a very shakey leaf - I still am, truth be told. I really do think Peter is happy to be recognised in the UK. In Toronto he was inevitably in Jake's shadow but he deserves more than that. Peter was so kind and shook my hand more than once and the hug was great. I was in two minds about going up to him - I'm so glad I did :D So much for the reserved Brit...
Bobbyanna thanks! I am so excited - I'm never gonna sleep tonight. I'm really glad you felt like you were there with me :D
Yeah, the hair's longer as I can't afford a haircut!! Glad you like it - I hate it :D One of the things I've always liked about Jake and Peter is that I think we could feel like mates. They're such nice guys and I want to have a pint with them! I hope Peter's enjoying England. I wish you were in Oxford too, Bobbyanna. There are some days when I'm so happy it's my home town and today was one of them :D I hope Peter liked it.
Yew WDW you and Peter DO look like mates, and I have a feeling he might have accepted an invitation to have tea with your mom.
Im reading about Nick Hornby, and the film and didnt realizew Emma Thompson was in it and Alfred Molina. My, what a good writer and cast! Coming of age story! Lots of women involved in direction and so forth.
Ooooo love you love Peter love Emma Thompson! Peter's a class act. Emma, also. And you, too!
Hi Pia :D I was looking out for Emma and Alfred but no sign of them. Just the youngsters. I'm a big fan of Emma Thompson myself - she's done a great deal for British actresses. What wouldn't I have given to have dragged Peter off to Oxford's famous Turf Inn or the White Horse round the corner with its unparalleled real ale :)
Emma's a great actress - a not so good comedienne :) and Alfred - well he belongs in my Hayden Christensen ?WHY? box (sorry, fans).
Back to the positive, WDW you gotta keep the hair, Ruby and I insist on the hair :)
Oooh, Peter in the Turf! I can see it!
I bet his jacket smelled nice, WDW. Bet he smelled nice :)
You guys are so cute embiggened, with yr scarves and layers and WDW yr northface parka and all - tee hee hee - love both of you!
Hey Nouskie Snarkbucket - I like Alfred - I still remember Prick Up Your Ears all those years ago. Nope, don't like the hair. Soon as I have any money at all, it's going :D
Pter smelled gorgous! Don't you have a jacket like that?
Hi Pia - it was a day for layers today. Beautiful sunshine but still cold after our snow surprise. Love to have Jake there too with his gorgeous grey scarf and then we could have gone down the alley to the Turf and had a pint of best. Happy dreams!
No need to ask now what you meant when you said last night that today would be better;) Wow! I am so effing jealous right now, but in a good way. I'm SO pleased for you and after all your travels it's nice of the movie stars to come to you for a change! I love the pics, you both look great, and I'm so happy to hear that Peter is such a nice guy and was so lovely to you. For that alone I would go and see his film, even if I wasn't planning to already. Thanks for sharing it all with us:) I was feeling so pissed off earlier after seeing Arsenal robbed of a champions league semi final but I've got a huge smile on my face now :D
Hey TL! That's funny what you say as I was actually thinking about that on the way home today - last time I saw Peter was way over in Toronto and for Jake I've travelled all over the place. How great this time that Peter visited my town! It felt good! I had no idea just this morning that the film was in town. I knew they were coming to Oxford but that was it - I coudn't believe my eyes when I saw the trailers this morning.
I'm glad I've compensated for the Arsenal disappointment :)
How chuffing fantastic is that,WDW???!!! Now I know what Anouska meant earlier when she said she had a feeling you had something special for us tonight.
:-D
That's all she said, bless her, when she must have been bursting to tell me!
TL and I have been discussing Peter's many and varied (mainly) acting-related talents lately so I am thrilled skinny (if only!)that you met him again and he set up that lovely photo op with you!
You look just fine girl(I like the long hair too,but shorter's easier, isn't it?) and Peter is just devastatingly handsome!!Congratulations on keeping it together, getting some great photos and having the chutzpah to go over and talk to him. They do say you make your own luck and you're certainly due another wonderful experience like this.
I'm as jealous as hell but really, really pleased for you!!! Why,Mr.Sarsgaard, you're gorgeous!
Oh Wow. Just Wow. And in character too. I've always wondered about the acting process. I meant to say how wonderful this film sounds too, when you mentioned it on a previous post. Oxford is so beautiful, I remember visiting with my other half on a vacation to England a looooong time ago. Fabulouse pics, you and Peter look great, WDW!
Hey Nadine!! Good for Anouska for keeping zipped - can't have been easy as I phoned her in quite a state this evening! It was so so nice of Peter to suggest having the picture taken like that and to wave one of the crew over to take it. I was just in a state of shock at the time - I mean Peter is right up there in my list of very favourite movie stars - and he knew that and took over :D
I'm amazed now thinking back that I went up to him while he was preparing to do a scene. But as soon as I'd had my moment I left him to it and came home as I thought nothing could beat that.
Yes Mr Sarsgaard is gorgeous! And he's lost some weight since TIFF - looking very good indeed.
Congrats, WDW! Peter sounds like a wonderful sweetheart!
Hi Bertie! It was so fascinating to me that Peter kept in character while he was talking to me - it seemed strange but then I'm used to his usual voice. But how amazing is that? I don't know how easy it is for an American to do an English accent but his Oxford accent was as good as mine :D It just seemed odd as it was out of context.
Oxford really is beautiful, especially in the evening sun - it looks good on the sandstone. That's great you've been here. I wouldn't be surprised if Jake's been here - when he was in England while Chelsea Clinton was studying in Oxford - and it's good to see Peter here too. But a day's not enough!
OMG!!!!!! How freaking awesome, WDW!!!!! Aww, you and Peter look so good together. Color me totally jealous. You deserve it though. :D Loving all the pics too. Seems like it was meant to be!
Thanks Wicked! Peter is gorgeous and he was so nice to me :D I think when the film comes out I'll have to walk round wearing a sandwich board to advertise it :)
Hey Get Real!! I'm so glad you liked the pic. I usually take terrible photos and I'm not joking but I was so happy. I cannot believe my luck, I really can't. To have been following this film around and then literally to bump into it in my home town - just too good to be true and I am so grateful. And so lucky!!! How am I going to sleep tonight....
It's all good, WDW, all good! :D Your pics are wonderful. So nice that Peter was so lovely to you. And how cool that he stayed in a perfect English accent. Can't wait to hear it. Now you just have to have one of those moments with Jake. ;D
Hi Get Real - I just don't want to get greedy with Jake and chance my luck :D I've been so lucky to have had several really good encounters with Jake and he's never disappointed - but Jake is such a moviestar! Peter doesn't feel like that, despite his huge talent. But who knows :) I can't wait to see An Education.
I doubt it would be so easy to get that close to Jake on a movie set. Jake, to me, feels very much like a red carpet kind of moviestar. I've spoken brief words to Jake but he doesn't have the time to share a moment as Peter did today. After being in the crowd for Brad Pitt's premier at TIFF, I wonder how his fans stand it, always being at that distance. I'm so glad that Peter is still so approachable and gracious - he really could have told me to get lost, as they were busy.
I understand what you mean but I do think Jake is still very approachable. Maybe not during a big production moment on a movie but I could see approaching just when he is out on the street. I am sure he would give a moment if he had it. Would never want Jake to have that Brad Pitt craziness. Glad Peter was very approachable though.
I agree, Get Real, I felt able to approach Jake in Toronto and at Cannes he was very giving. But in a filmset situation, I bet they would keep everyone well away. It's all security. Peter is a kind and very approachable guy and I bet Jake can be too if he's able.
But it was great today to be able to watch how a film gets made, bit by bit and it was taking an awful long time to get one quick scene done. The actors looked extremely bored and spent most of the time getting their hair fluffed about. I saw a couple of days filming in London of Ryan Phillippe's movie not that long ago and the scenes for that were captured much quicker. There were endless rehearsals today and lots of disruption from Oxford's endless stream of cyclists and tourists barging through. It must have been very frustrating for the director.
I agree WDW on all counts. Must have been so great to see the whole filming process. Even if it there was long, boring bits, lol. Wish I could have joined you!
It was really interesting, TL, I'm so fascinated by the processes that create a movie - it's exciting for us to be able to pop by for an hour to see a scene but the poor extras looked so bored and uncomfortable in their clothes! They weren't complaining though and were happy to pose for pics. Just an amazing day (with little bits of work in between ;D). Would've been great if you'd been there!
I just couldn't believe that I've spent the last two weeks here trying to track Peter down and in the end I fell across him!
I think you meant me, WDW, not TL. ;) Still so wonderful for you!
Oh bugger - sorry Get Real - I must be more tired than I thought, but yes, I definitly meant you, sorry xxx
LOl! Yeah, don't scare people WDW, I'm sure one of me is more than enough;)
Still squeeing about it all here, just amazing...So does this mean filming is back in London now? I'm going to be round the more central parts of London quite a bit next week, so I'm going to make sure I don't even think aboutbumping into Sexy Sarsy and who knows what might happen;)
Chuckle - I am bad, seriously. I tried to find out where filming was moving on to but the extras were finishing today, the security company was finishing today and I couldn't really interrogate the beloved Sarsy too much beyond finding out this was his only day in Oxford. I find it a nice thought that maybe Maggie and Ramona are in the town tonight. So maybe now the plan is to go back to places beginning with W in London!! I'll keep my eyes and ears open.
yep, don't expect it and it may happen!
Off to bed for me - I think it's catching up with me :D Sweet dreams tonight, that's for sure.
OMG, I'm SO glad I came by; better late than never.
Peter and you look grand together. You are as lucky as you are lovely:)
TY for sharing with us:)
sass
Speaking of Peter disappearing into his characters; he frightened me so badly when I saw Boys Don't Cry, I could never see that movie ever again.
Again TY from NYC, USA for allowing me to see Peter up close and personal on your blog:)
xoxoxo
s
That is so cool, and very funny about the accent. Maybe he was afraid if he broke too much out of character it would be hard to get it back.
OMG this is great!!! Well done!
And kudos to you for not bombarding Peter with any Jake-questions. You are one poise and intellgient woman :)
Peter seems really nice, and he's such a good actor.
Maybe it's a habit (or natural) for him to stay with a pretend accent on and off set when he's working... erm, method acting? :P
Congrats! This is even better than meeting him in London, Oxford has a way more idyllic setting!
Great picture! So lucky and Peter sounds simply lovely. It's not like not only did you get to meet and get your picture with a great actor and nice guy ..... but you got a bit 'closer' in a strange way to Jake! You go girl. I admire you for your initiative.
What a great story! Peter on your lunch hour, you lucky girl! I think the universe was paying you back for all those Jake near-misses in LA... Awesome! -Libby
Kate you lucky lucky girl. See you don't have to travel the world to find movie stars you can just sit at home and they will come to you!
I bet it starts with Peter, now if only Jake comes to Oxford and you've got it made
trekfan
Hi everyone :) Another beautiful day but something's missing - yep, Peter! No sign of the crew left, just a ripped up sheet with yesterday's schedule on it.
Thanks so much for the comments and for sharing in the experience.
Thanks Sass :D I couldn't deal with Boys Don't Cry either. But what a great performance.
Hi Destiny :D It was so cool about the accent, and bizarre! I suppose it must be difficult to get into character and then having to hang around for ages while the sun is in the wrong place. Oh to hear Jake doing such an accent :D
Hey there Winterbird! I must say that Oxford looks so gorgeous in the spring sunshine and Petere just set it off perfectly. I hope he liked the place.
Thanks anon!
Hi Libby :D That's a good point about the LA misses!
Morning Trekfan :D That's so funny. Someone has to send Jake an invitation.
Have a great day everyone :D
Hey WDW, have you come down off the ceiling yet? ;-)
About Peter staying in character and with the English accent (swoon),
I once saw an interview with David Suchet, recorded during a break in filming "Agatha Christie's Poirot",
and he apologised for sticking with his pseudo-Belgian accent throughout the interview,so that he could stay at least partially in character.
Must be that with some actors, especially when adopting an accent or demeanour that's totally foreign to them, they find it easier to stay in the groove,so to speak, until filming's done for the day. Maybe they even find themselves struggling to shake off the accent immediately after they've been "living with it" all day.
A curious breed these thesps, but I love 'em.
I think it may have been Peter's idea to come to Oxford. They'd run out of scenic areas of London beginning with W so he suggested going to "WetDarkandWild-town". ;-)
Hi Nipping in Nadine :D That's interesting about David Suchet - I suppose this must be common. Very curious yet understandable. Loving the new name for Oxford ;D
And no, I'm still flying miles above the ground....
Oh WDW it's good to see your face again, with longer hair and Sarsy by your side!:)
I'm so happy for you.
Have a good day,
xxxx Xenia
Thanks so much Xenia! I love to see me with Sarsy by my side too :D Hope you're having a good day xx
I was already very impressed with Peter in September 2005, when "Flightplan" came out. I thought he was the best thing about that movie. I had enjoyed him in "Garden State" twelve months before that.
So, I was already a Sarsgaard fan before "Brokeback Mountain" came out. Sarsy was the best thing about "Year of the Dog" (2007).
In "Rendition," he reminded me of a young ("Terms of Endearment") Jeff Daniels.
Hey Kate, I'm so happy for you meeting Peter in Oxford!!!
I hope he can get to become better known in Europe, because he's an amazing and very versatile actor.
I've loved him in every role he's played.
It was so nice of him to take the picture with you!
You both look gorgeous!!!
Thank you for sharing!!!
Paola
Thanks so much Paola! I'm still flying from it, just thrilling. Hope you have a lovely day - So glad to see you here :D
I'm in this film!!
Don't stop there, Anon! Tell me more, please!
