Cannes - A day to remember one year on, through Jake's words, videos and images

This day last year was a special day for any Gyllenhaalic and, I don't doubt, for the leader of the clan himself, Jake Gyllenhaal. It was the first day of the 60th Cannes Film Festival - the sun was hot, no carpet has been redder (or with more steps), the sun was blue, the yachts were mega and the wine matched the carpet. But nothing and no-one shone or looked more beautiful than Jake on that stunning day. This video below doesn't have a covering image but, if you click play, you get a treat.

Jake gave some remarkable interviews during his flying visit to the Riviera, possibly inspired by the paradise setting of the Eden Roc hotel in Antibes, along the coast from Cannes. 'Venice is beautiful, but I never got to do my interviews by the ocean. This is great - it's beautiful' (BBC News). This post illustrates this amazing day through some of my favourite Cannes Jake quotes, videos and photographs, including some of my own as we waited on the sidelines for Jake and the Zodiac crew to arrive at the Palais.

Jake talks about passion

Zodiac was all about obsession and passion and Jake was at pains to point out that he is someone who lives for passion. It was a recurring theme through several interviews. Here are a few examples. 'My heart is a much stronger muscle than my head (Guardian Unlimited podcast).

'I am someone who lives for passion. It's constructive and it can create beautiful things' (the Netherlands newspaper AD).

'And I think I do understand passion very well - I'm very passionate about certain things and I spend a lot of time on them.' (Guardian Unlimited podcast)

'Even if it perhaps sounds geeky, I have a big passion for chewing gum. I am very passionate where politics are concerned. I am a passionate cyclist. And I am a passionate family member, and my friends are unbelievably important to me. Obviously I am somewhat obsessive, when it concerns relationships' (Welt Online).

'Like any other sane person, I do not want to be judged by my looks. If somebody compliments me on my looks - which I did nothing to get - it has no value for me whatsoever. I would rather deal with people who appreciate me for what I do in my movies' (AD).

'Now that time [Brokeback Mountain] has passed, I try to look back on that period. 'Joy' is the word to describe it. But after a while you have to let go of the past and focus on something new. However, a big success like Brokeback Mountain can also be very 'chaining'. It's like it has become a part of you and you can't let it go. And there's another side-effect: if someone now gives criticism, it hurts twice as bad - after hearing so much praise' (AD)

'If I go to Cannes, I sure know what to do, don't I? Today, I'm here for interviews and I'm happy to do it. And I'm not just saying that to be polite. I'm very proud of Zodiac. I'm willing to do everything I can to make sure the movie will stay in theaters for a long time' (AD).

WDW's day in the sun with good friends and Jake

Thanks and love to my good friends, Mouk and Ing - I have been thinking of you both as well as Jake today and remembering our amazing day in which we basked in the sun. Of course, that day is also memorable to me because it's the day I came down with chicken pox. I am so relieved that I infected neither of you - or Jake for that matter! And a big thanks to Jake for our moment.

There may be many other Cannes,
And you'll be standing there with someone new,
There will be other songs to sing, another fall, another spring,
But there will never be another Cannes 2007 . . .

Sigh!

Hi Pia :D Sigh indeed... Such an incredible milestone in Jake's career. I hope he'll always treasure it. I'm drinking margaritas tonight in honour of the occasion and so I'm getting through a lot of vitamin C - I recommend it!

Well, I have my Aussie Shirez, WDW - but I do lift a glass in memory of y'all Being There - this doubled, no, tripled, at least, the thrill! But the thrill was there, and Jake, too, was thrilled, that was obvious.

So interesting that Jake mentioned a few times at Cannes his sense that Brokeback brought him there - true or false? I think his take is pretty right-on - but only Jake would TALK ABOUT IT IN PUBLIC.

And to say right out loud that DAVIDFINCHHEARTSJAKE because of Brokeback was really rather over the top, but I think Jake was right about that, too. Some nifty little stuff going on between David and Jake - directors as papa figures - so interesting!

O well, hooray for Hollywood, what do I know.

Jacobo darlin' cant you be "forever young"? (still on Uncle Bob time today. . . )

second sigh!

It's interesting about whether Jake thought BBM brought him to Cannes - in his interviews he spoke with great respect and love for this film while at the same time hoping people would would also consider his new creation, Graysmith. Personally, I went to Cannes to support Jake in his new venture, as if to show him (as if he needed it!!) that his fans would move along with him as he explored new roles.

Jake's relationships with his directors are fascinating, especially that between Jake and David Fincher. As many people know (and tease me about), Fincher is my out and out favourite of all Jake's directors and so I always like to hear Jake and David discuss one another.

Glad to hear you're still enjoying Bob! I was listening to him all last week. In anticipation of Candy being on TV tomorrow, I've switched today to This Mortal Coil.

Oh My! He was just heartbreakingly gorgeous at Cannes, wasn't he? I sure envy you, WDW. Throwing him a kiss would be a dream at an event like that, and catching one of his, well, would make me very happy. Wouldn't need an authograph or anything else. :)

Cannes must have been a beautiful experience for many that year - what a way to celebrate 60 Years of Cannes with Jake being there. Congratulations to you guys for bringing us along on the journey with you. I saw on a front page newspaper a picture of Harrison Ford looking as glum as the weather and holding an umbrella at Cannes. Last year was definitely the year!

It's interesting his comment about BBM being hard to let go of and also being 'chained' by and to it. Even moreso now Heath is not with us, indelibly so. And the comment about not looking too much back at the past and moving forward. I made a comment last year that if Jake never made another movie in his life he has achieved the ultimate with Brokeback.

On reflection, though it may be true, that's not fair on Jake at all as it may now act as a comparison to everything he does from then on. I was recently watching The Good Girl and was amazed at how good he was in that role and the range, depth and numerous emotions the character displayed - a million miles away from the Jake we know and yet there were hints of him everywhere (I hope I'm making sense and I haven't touched a drop tonight).

Now Fincher is the hottest director Jake has worked with and certainly the most talented. I've got a little crush on that man. He melted my heart when he said there were times when he doubted his parent's ability to protect him at a time when he was most vulnerable. He faced his fear and from his experiences made a brilliant movie. I also loved Brad Silberling as being the most collaborative of directors and providing that 'blanket of love' over the whole process and the care and attention everyone paid to that process. I feel that Jake gravitates towards these real experiences and slips into the role wholeheartedly.

Well, I could go on but I think I've chatted for England this evening...... BTW loved the press conference interveriw - not been seen before and all the pics.

Hi anon :D Jake was captivating at Cannes - he had such an amazing time and it showed. I feel very privileged to have witnessed Jake at Cannes. I have more than one autograph from Jake but without doubt being at the end of that point was just the most incredible gift from Jake - it was like sharing a moment. No doubt he forgot his part of it soon enough, just one good moment out of many, but I know I won't!

Hey Sheba! Thanks for such a great comment! To be honest, even though I love Indiana Jones, I haven't had the heart to look at any of the Cannes coverage so far.

It is interesting the idea of whether Jake has given his career-defining performance. I don't think so. Brokeback was perfect in every way because it all fitted and everyone was in their place. Jake was a vital element. But for himself I can see great things, great roles. I agree that it's perhaps unfair to speak of an actor having contributed his bedt when he's only in his 20s! How can anyone want to live up to that?

I have a little crush on Fincher too :D Glad it's not just me! I love the way he thinks and the way he sees the world. As for other directors, I would say I admire Richard Kelly the most. Without him, there would be no Donnie Darko and that's a horrible thought.

I'm glad you liked the conference and pics :D Great comment, thanks :)

Your welcome and again thank you for the podcast interview. I love listening to Jake's voice (even though he says 'like' a lot - I can forgive him). Jake is such a flirt with that pink snap ID. I bet he snapped it on that interviewer's thigh, judging from that cheeky grin.

I did think of Richard and yes, he's also up there. I can't wait to have an indepth conversation with my youngest when he watches Donnie Darko and get his opinion on how it related to him. I do feel it for Richard who has struggled to live up to DD and Southland Tales for he was a head-shrinker. When I'm on hiaitus I'll attempt to watch it again and give it a real go.

Another random quote from Jake, I love 'em...."My heart is a stronger muscle than my head - doesn't he mean his brain? I'm going to embroider that quote on a pillow :DD Yet, I know exactly what he meant.

Hey Sheba! (I just emailed you, by the way) I'm glad you liked the podcast. I loved that when I first heard it. I don't want things like that to be forgotten so I need to repost them now and again. Jake says 'like' all the time... Normally, that's something people grow out of, but, with Jake, it's in reverse and he says it more, the older he gets!

The pink snappy bracelet is quite possibly my favourite Cannes video. I just adore it. I love it so much Mr WDW went out and bought me some of these bracelets - although yellow - to remind me of the ones I had when I was younger. No-one flirts like Jake with a pink snappy bracelet...

That's an interesting thing about the heart being stronger than the head - Jake has said this a few times and he always says the head and not the brain :D Sounds good to have that as a mantra on a pillow!

This week was reminiscent of the first of Jake in Cannes.
I remember I was in class and gave an outlet to go to the laboratory to see if the computer Jake was already in Cannes.

When I arrived at home, corrected for the PC and started to look at the first images calmly.
But my greatest anxiety was the red carpet.
He was wonderful in red carpet.
And what was the best as Jake is respected in Europe and logical the good reception that the film was in Cannes.

Very good reminder that great moment.

Hi Monica :D Thanks for sharing your memories of Cannes day! It was so amazing. And I remember when I was on the bus to the airport with my MP3 plugged into my ears and an interview with Jake on Radio 1 came on and this was the first real confirmation we'd had that Jake was going and there I was on the way to the airport! I was so excited. And then it was better than I expected.

The red carpet in Cannes is stunning - it's not about the stars, it's about the films. It's a very knowledgeable crowd there. But the atmosphere was unbelievable - I remember seeing people hanging in the trees. Zodiac got a great reception in Cannes and the premiere was such a glamorous event. Thanks for commenting :D

What a great post,WDW! Lovely trip down memory lane *sigh* Those were the days...

That brain/head comment always makes me smile, those funnny little sayings Jake comes out with are so adorable. As for him growing out of saying "like" - I'm,er,a few years older than Jake and I haven't grown out of it yet:(

It's interesting what you both say, Sheba and WDW, about BBM being the peak of Jake's career.Speaking in general terms, I don't think Jake has reached anything like his peak(brilliant though he is already) simply because he's so young and he's always proved willing to learn and explore his craft so he'll naturally develop and get even better as he gets older. But saying that, I honestly don't think he'll ever play another character that will move and affect me and make me fall in love with him the way he did with Jack Twist, simply because like you say, WDW, everything about BBM was perfect, and it became bigger than the sum of its parts. The impact it had on me sets it in a league of its own so while I don't neccessarily think BBM will always be his best performance, it will always be my best and favourite.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL:D That is just what I meant abut BBM and Jake's role in it but you said it perfectly and so much better :) I saw the BBM advert today for the first time (what a chill it sent down my spine) and the mispronunciation was still there but i suppose there's not much they can do about the prerecorded ad. I love some of the strange and beautiful things Jake says too!

Hi WDW. A reply is winging its way by return.

I also love that he shot a self-portrait video of his unlaced boots! He's so immaculately dressed, hair coiffed and he's got unlaced boots on - that's so Jake when he allows us glimpses into his world. ...And the hands are so gorgeous.

What a difference a year makes - so many changes in Jake since then. Here's hoping that he's back at Cannes next year - maybe with the 'Moon' project.

Hi TL, you do express my sentiments very well. When Jake did DD they said the same thing then. There's so much more to come and I look forward to every single one of them - even if I don't understand the motivation of the character at the time (like Douglas Freeman), I'm willing to let it mature and reveal itself with time.

I'm also proud of myself today as I watched A Knight's Tale again and it was a joy. Heath's interaction with the cast (Paul Bettany, Alan Tudyack) was awesome and so real, the music, fantastic (Higher in Zodiac, MM and A Knights Tale), the dancing and everything really was superb. ... And, I got a nice surprise at the end of the credits - real British humour LOL!

twistedlogic said...

Aw, thanks WDW:) It's not often I say anything that makes sense, so that means a lot.
I saw a longer version of the Channel 4 ad, with a few classic lines from the film playing over some of the images and it gave me shivers too. I think I'm going to watch it tomorrow night after all. Well, at least I'll try!

twistedlogic said...

Hey Sheba! That's a good point about DD. I imagine that to hardcore DD fans, that will always be their favourite Jake performance, like Jack Twist is to me as a Brokie. Glad you enjoyed AKT. I got the extended version months ago but haven't been brave enough yet to take it out of the wrapper:( I'm still waiting impatiently for INT but I just know that will suffer the same fate. I need to watch Heath again (other than in BBM) at some point soon, to get used to seeing him before TDK.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL, I reckon we saw the same trailer - very moving. But you know what I'm gonna say... Take INT out of the wrapper and just enjoy what you see and enjoy what you hear! It's so good and I really want you to experience it. I suppose it's also about building up your immune system before TDK. Do watch it - it's amazing, Heath did himself proud and the other actors are incredible too.

I'd better get off to bed now before I drive you all mad with my coughing :D Thanks for another lovely evening :) Catch up with you later!

sheba said...

Yes, its really helped. I think at times we push away from things that remind us of pain but the longer its not confronted the worse it seems to become. I'd like to start dwelling on the work he's left us and the joy he took in many of these roles - its so clear.

Goodnight all, sleep well.

twistedlogic said...

You're both right, Sheba and WDW, the only way forward is to enjoy and be grateful for what Heath left us, not dwell on what we've lost. It's funny cos in the first couple of weeks after Heath died I watched several of his films and it realy helped me a lot, but now that some time has passed and it's not so raw I'm scared to go back and open old wounds. I still watch scenes from BBM a lot but like I said earlier, that's in a league of it's own and I only see Ennis. But I will definitely watch some of Heath's films in the build up to TDK, including INT, if it turns up in time!

Nite all, speak to you tomorrow xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Night TL and Sheba :D - you just have to take it in your own time, TL, but I know just what you mean. BBM is much easier to watch than the other films because it's all about Jack and Ennis. But films like INT just deserve for you to see them. I was weepy when I saw it but it's such a good film - I just curled up with some chocolate and wine and let it flood over me. Very therapeutic. But then I can't watch Candy so who am I to talk! G'night *)
