Update: Jake is the Prince! - Comedy Jake: 'I'd like James Franco's head.'

Typical... I publish a post and what happens while I do it? Yep, Disney announce Jake Gyllenhaal IS the Prince of Persia and Gemma Arterton is his princess! This is great news! You can read all about it at Variety.

On with the post... (with a quickened pulse)

Jake Gyllenhaal is currently - hopefully - filming the comedy Nailed and while there has been some doubt on whether this film will be actually funny (the heroine has a nail in her head and another leading player chokes to death on a cookie), there is no doubt that Jake is a funny guy. Anyone, even the most tightly pursed-lipped viewer, who has ever seen a talkshow with Jake on it or listened to one of his film commentaries, has to accept that Jake can tell a funny story with impeccable timing and delivery and has been waiting for a chance to display his comic touch on the big screen. Bubble Boy was funny to many, including this appreciative fan, but Jake has grown so much since then and he is ready to do an adult comedy and we are ready to laugh at it.

Not everyone has expected Jake to be quite as funny as he really is. Could anyone have believed that Jake's Saturday Night Live would have become a modern classic, featuring on DVDs and in endless repeats. We even got to see it, eventually, on UK TV but without my favourite meatball sketch, something that remains a sore point. So for a funny reminder, do enjoy this:

Away from the strict comic format of shows such as SNL, Jake has been funny on no end of talkshows, knowing just how to tell a tale, right down to voices, expression and, allegedly most importantly, the pauses... My favourite without doubt, even making me literally cry with laughter on a crowded rush hour tube, is Jake's Gooberballs story on the Rendition Letterman, back in October 2007.

And Jake tickled Jonathan Ross with his swimming.

Jake doesn't just entertain on talkshows - his commentaries are priceless, especially the one that he did for Bubble Boy, which alone makes the DVD an essential buy. All those of you who have yet to hear the commentary in its entirety can listen to a few minutes here:

It's interesting to note - not to mention peculiar - that some people have been surprised by how funny Jake is. Take this article for example, which announces with great incredulity that 'Jake Gyllenhaal is funny!' As the writer notes, we are ready and waiting for Jake to make us laugh.

We are well accustomed to the banter that is exchanged between Jake and those closest to him, especially Peter Sarsgaard. In this Rendition interview, for example, Jake had a laugh by insisting that he and Peter were dating and when discussing the beards both men were sporting: 'Peter is merely doing it for vanity—he’s really vain and full of himself (laughter). We all know he’s a bad actor, so he needs to cover himself up. I, on the other hand, am doing it for a role (in “Brothers”).'

Bubble Boy has not been Jake's only go at a comic role. In This Is Our Youth on the London stage, Jake played Warren and the reviews for his comic performance were exemplary, and the role was, of course, rewarded. Check out some of the reviews here. The Financial Times had this to say: 'As Warren in the American playwright Kenneth Lonergan's new play This Is Our Youth, Jake Gyllenhaal creates one of the great late-adolescent characters of recent drama. He's gauche, accident-prone, sweet. He keeps escaping from the clutches of a father who beats him to those of Dennis, a drug-pushing friend who bullies him. He hasn't yet made it successfully with a girl, and he likes blowing his own assets and his father's on drug experiences. Even his humour is clumsy. Trying to make conversation with a girl, he says dopey things such as: "Like, I've never begun the cigarette scene myself, but I hear great things about it."'

'The sweetness in him comes hand-in-hand with honesty. He doesn't hide the child he has been; he has no clue about what kind of adult he might be, if he should even live that long. But he's so spontaneous that wit just bubbles up in him. He's an adorable, heart-catching blunderer. But he doesn't really blunder about his feelings or his heart: he's firm about the things that matter to him, and he grows firmer as the play proceeds.'

'This Is Our Youth is set in Manhattan in 1982; it's a kind of theatre cousin to Salinger's Catcher in the Rye, set in the era of sex, drugs, and rock'n'roll. As its two acts take Jake through one evening and the morning after, we begin to see him just starting to grow up, just starting to get a life of his own. It's extraordinary from how many sides we start to see him during the play, and the peaks and troughs to which his experience takes him. Gyllenhaal's performance is perfect - and so rounded that it takes a very long time till you even begin to like this Warren, let alone to realise that he's the central character in the play.'

'I love his body-language: stiff, gawky, artless. When in doubt, he tends to grin: a grin that's apologetic, simple, sincere. His Warren's an enthusiast, or wants to be. There are things wrong with both Lonergan's play and Laurence Boswell's production, notably anachronisms. New York girls surely did not use the adjective "jappy" as early as 1982; none of us used those telephones; and did anyone back then talk of "chilling out"?'

'Dennis is a vain pretty-boy narcissist, but Hayden Christensen demonstrates that side of him so early on that the character has almost nowhere to go. Even so, Christensen handles his very long Act Two speech, helplessly revealing Dennis's absurd self-contradictions, extremely well. And Anna Paquin catches brilliantly Jessica's assured/confused contradictions, taking her to the cusp of vivid caricature without ever sacrificing credibility. It is depressing to read in the Garrick Theatre's Really Useful programme that David Garrick was a famous 17th-century actor. But it's dazzling to read there that this is Gyllenhaal's stage debut. His performance enriches the whole West End.'

Finally, Jake has come out with some very funny liners in interviews, which can only make one chuckle and puzzled all at the same time. I like this one, where Jake is talking about the insecurities he suffered on the set of Brokeback Mountain because his head was too big for the hats: 'In the movie that I'm doing now they all made special hats for me. Heath has a fine-sized head. We just did a make-up test the other day and they were all bringing our make-up in and stuff and it was like the hats were the special moment. 'Jake's special hats are coming; they're coming in!' I felt so insecure because of it... Just don't mention special hats!.. I'd like James Franco's head. That'd be a good head!' [James Franco played Harry Osborn, or the Green Goblin's son, in the Spider-Man movies.]

And then there is quite possibly my favourite of all Jake's quotes, taken from InStyle magazine, way back in 1999: 'There are three things I'll never do again: eat Play Doh, run with scissors, and keep my ice cube collection in a shoe box.' Following that advice, one need never go wrong.

Whether or not Nailed turns out to be funny, we can count on many more comic gems and turns coming our way from Jake through the course of his career.

I have barely recovered from the spandex pictures and now the thought of the Prince showing off his incredible chest on the big screen is making me dizzy. Time to go lie down.

wow.. what a rich post! And funny Jake! Yay!

of course people are suprised that Jake can be funny - cos handsome sexy men aren't usually funny - in fact, most of them don't even get the jokes.

yeah, I second that Jake's commentary in Bubble Boy DVD is unmissable!!!!

PoP... its' not my first choice of film, but I am just happy that Jake is busy busy working - more films is always good news.

i plead ignorant as I didn't know what play duh is, so I googled it... so i guess they aren't edible? :P

Did I say it's a great post (again)? Thanks.

My mum used to make Play Duh for us. It was just a dough recipe with food colouring. Totally safe to eat (not that we did) and better than the commercial stuff, which smelled funny. :)

Good post WDW. I'm always surprised that people find Jake's ability to be humorous surprising! :D His humour is a large part of his appeal for me.

Hi everyone! I am such a happy WDW :D see what happens... I do a happy post about Jake and making us laugh and then he makes my day and signs on the dotted line, meaning we get a summer of Jake in England and a movie next year with no shirt! There is a good chance that I will be relocating and moving into the multiplex next summer. And did I say big premieres? BIG premieres :D Deep breaths....

Hi anaon :D You and me both. Blimey, I'm worn out....

Hey Winterbird :D So glad you liked my happy post. Jake is such a funny guuy and the Bubble Boy commentary should be available on the National Health :D It's play doh and it's intoxicating stuff - I had loads of it when I was a kid, it smelled like marzipan and I tried to eat it myself a few times, or at least lick it :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby! Posting at the same time.... I do remember that play doh that came in different colours and was edible. we used to make strangely shaped biscuits out of it. Happy days :D Maybe we should have a go...

Hey WDW brilliant post, esp. for those of us who are biting our NAILS about NAILED -

I recall the GQ interview where the interviewer, somewhat to Jake's alarm, remarks that he has the face of a comic.

O god kids eating play dough - although I spent my years working on a magazine sniffing and chewing on rubber cement until somebody told me I COULD DIE. . .

But if you make your own play dough out of flour and water and food coloring it's not toxic. . .

Bubble Boy commentary is wonderful - the video is a great recommendation for those who have not seen this film - I swore I would never! but loved it.

Another of Jake's interesting choices - prince of persia - why not? - there's gotta be alot of half-nekkidness, and physical action. Im all for it.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much Pia! I remember that with the GQ interviewer - love that interview... I don't think a childhood or adolescence is complete without some ingestion of play doh. I agree about the Bubble Boy video - I'd love everyone to enjoy the commentary.

So much stuff going for PoP. I'm going to make sure I can get past Level 3 now.... I wonder how good Jake is.

sheba said...

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes!!! We all know he's a Prince, now its confirmed. Thanks for the great news - cheered me right up that has.

Right, off to read the rest of this post. Thanks WDW.

Wow, such fabulous news - I have been waiting for this, I'm thrilled! I have great hopes for Prince of Persia - it promises to be a big, beautiful fantasy of a movie, plus we get sequels! A perfect fantasy escape of a movie. Jake will be magnificent in it, and I can just see Gemma Arterton as the Princess. She has a liveliness about her eyes that I think will work well. IMHO, of course. ;) I have loved the films I have seen of Mike Newell's - Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire was just beautiful, and Dance with a Stranger, and Four Weddings and a Funeral. I never did see Enchanted April, but someday I will. With Jerry Bruckheimer producing and the video game's creator, Jordan Mechner's input, it should be really something. A little something for everyone. Congrats to Jake!

Thanks for another great post today :*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba! Me too :D I hope you enjoy the rest of the post :)

Hi Bertie :D

I didn't realise Newell did Enchanted April?? That is one of my favourite films of all time - it is absolutely wonderful and beautiful! I've seen it over and over and not known it was by him. Miranda Richardson and Josie Lawrence are incredible in it - everyone should see it. I think you'll see that I like it... Italy with its flowers and light is captivating, contrasting with the rain and umbrellas of London.

I enjoyed Dance with a Stranger too, very much.

I really think we are going to be rewarded with the Prince of Persia. It could be completely unexpected and stunning :D

Wow, we finally have PoP confirmation! I have been reading reaction that people are upset that he isn't Persian. I don't think that should stop the movie from being good and Jake being great in it.

And what a great post on Jake's humor. He can be hilarious and I hope we get to see more of that in Nailed. WDW, you picked some great clips and things I had not read/seen before. Such a wonderful review from TIOY.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! I know that some people have been vocal that the Prince should be a Persian but, if that were the case, by the same argument, Americans should only play Americans and Brits should only play Brits. This is also not a traditional Persian figure, this isn't reality - this is a hero from a computer game. Jake just looks the part with his dark hair and blue eyes (Alexander the Great left a trail of blue-eyed communities across the Middle East and beyond).

I'm so glad you liked the comedy Jake videos and bits and pieces. Another reminder that I wish I'd seen TIOY.

I agree, the actor who is the right choice for a role should get a part. This is not a real character, it's based on a video game. If it was one of great historical or cultural significance, that would be different. 6th Century Persia was quite vast and culturally diverse, I believe. I think the Prince's backstory is that he was adopted.

WDW, I just love Miranda Richardson too, I even liked her in her small role as Rita Skeeter in Harry Potter, with her specs askew. Mike Newell directed Love in the Time of Cholera too, I haven't seen that one yet either, and that one looked pretty lush in costuming and cinematography. I think we're going to get that kind of lush "stunnery" in PoP too. Can't wait! :)

sheba said...

I think it's fair to understand people's reaction to a non-Persian person playing a Persian prince. The same thing happened with The 300 and that turned out pretty damn good. Jake will prove it's his role, afterall the Prince doesn't speak Persian in the game, he speaks English (American English).

Sometimes I look at Jake and I see many different ethnicities within him from his looks and especially his mannerisms. He's like a chameleon and seems to be at ease interacting with many different cultures.

I can't wait. Watching my boys play the game and the interaction between the prince and the princess was so much fun. Can you imagine all the stunts he's got to do and the CGI will be amazing. So he's got to practise with a sword - I wonder if he'll take up fencing. I honestly can't see anyone else in that role - because I'm totally biased and not objective in the least :DDD

I loved that picture of Jake mocking Allison Hammond's face when she wanted a kiss "not, not looking like that.." - that's my favourite interview. ...And, oh, to be that girl in pink and where he's placed his hands......

Anonymous said...

^^You're right, it's fair Sheba. :) I should have said 6th Century Persian Empire in my above post. I agree, I can't see anyone else either, because he has the look (the blue eyes) and the slim athletic bod. I'm not even familiar with the video game, but I just like the idea of it.

Great to have confirmation about POP, it's always good to have new projects to look forward to. I have to say I do have some reservations about this, cos sometimes these blockbusters can turn out to be a bit...well,crap. But Jake's always chosen his roles wisely so I'm happy to trust his judgement on this one. Besides, even if it does turn out to be crap, it will be worth the entry fee just to see long haired swashbuckling Jake jumping around and getting all sweaty, with his shirt undone...I'm going weak at the knees just thinking about it:D
Btw, WDW, I love this post, and I'm not nitpicking, but...where are those chest hair pics? ;D

Brilliant comedy moments there, had me LOL all over again :D

That Gooberballs one is a classic -definitely one for the history books. And SNL, that Dreamgirls song cracks me up every time. It still amazes me to think that some bloke on Ch5 described Jake as being serious all the time??? Some of his interviews are way funnier than most comedians could ever dream of. And the things he comes out with-keeping his ice cube collection in a shoe box. That's just so random, it's hilarious!:D

I used to make Play Doh for TL Jr when she was little, I've still got the recipe somewhere if anyone wants it;D

Right, I'm off to work out the quickest route from South London to Pinewood;)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Bertie :D This just shows how ignorant I am because I'm now learning that some of my favourite films were directed by Jake's new director. Love in the Time of Cholera was great! Talking of Harry Potter - I went round the hall today where all of the dinner sequences at Hogwarts were filmed - beautiful.

Hi Sheba! I agree that Jake is something of a cultural chameleon and I think he will fit this part. And Jake sword fighting?! I'd love to see that and now I will :D I enjoyed the Alison interview very much as well.

Bertie, the game is great! We all need to start practising...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi TL! Posting at the same time! Er... I know I promised chest hair pics but I got distracted by all the comments earlier today and humour - so please blame everyone else and not me. I'll make up for it :D

PoP is going to be great, I really feel that, especially now I know more about the director and his amazing vision - he sees things in layers of colour.

I remember that C5 feature. Absolute nonsense, calling Jake serious all the time. Gooberballs should be required viewing for these commentators. Jake is funny, talented, beautiful and a prince :D

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Don't worry about the chest hair pics, I forgive you;) I'm sure I've got one or two saved on the computer somewhere that I can look at;)

I think POP definitely sounds like it has potential to be briliant and it's such a big departure from everything he's done before so that's exciting too, to see how he makes the transition into action hero territory and where he goes on from there.

sheba said...

Mercurial Jake, quicksilver Jake, as Annie P. described him in role of Jack Twist - o the idea of letting him loose - the beautiful face and body, while still in his twenties - at the peak of lush male beauty -

I didnt realize MN did Love In Time of Cholera, a beautiful film.

Wonder where filming sites will be.

Thanks for all the PoP background info, WDW and everyone. I know nothing about the game.

Play Doh was a huge thing as a kid for me. Had lots of fun creating all sorts of silly shapes and figures. It still is popular here.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Quicksilver Jake - I always loved that, Pia. I am glad that we are going to see Jake in a role like this as he is now :D And with MN at the helm, I'm happy. I have watched Enchanted April over and over. I love these films. He could bring so much light to this project, incredible vistas and true romance. Sigh.

Obviously time for bed. What a good day! Night and see you all later :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! I think everyone should get hold of the game and we can work through the levels :D My prince never lasts very long unfortunately, due to the spike-filled pits.

This will be such a contrast to what has gone before and will also allow Jake a great deal of freedom for the future. It has a quick turn around - it's due out next summer. This time next year Jake could be doing red carpets and publicity all over the place :D

Night all :D

I think Disney is a good choice for him at this point in his career...a huge motion picture..As always thanks for all the great pics...

Monica, it's a Jerry Bruckheimer film (he also produced Pirates of the Carribean), the director Mike Newel directed films like Donnie Brasco and Harry Potter and the guy who wrote the script wrote the original game too.
I think it's really a great deal for Jake! As I said this will up his fanbase and make him a very rich man.
I'll certainly watch it! :)

Can I just confess that I fell asleep (twice) while watching the Pirates of Caribbean 1&2? I don't like those movies at all.

But Mike Newell also made "Dance with a Stranger" (omg... Rupert Everett and Miranda Richardson!) which is top-notch film. So I have some faith in him.

I guess we'll know when the film comes out. And what do I know about box office? :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm probably showing my age, but what I remember from "Enchanted April" was Joan Plowright's performance as the cranky old lady who gradually softened to show the kindness behind the crankiness. Plowright is the mother of Laurence Olivier's children, and she's extremely gifted in her own right.

"Prince of Persia" is going to take a lot of work on Jake's part, but very likely the studio will provide trainers for Jake, and digitize whatever moves he can't do.

I hope they will be able to finish "Nailed." They can't make back what they've spent so far if they don't have a film to show in the theaters. :-/

Ouch. I just finished making the rounds of the fanboy sites and poor Jake is already taking a beating for his Persia casting. Many don't think he's physical enough or intense enough or funny enough. Jeez. Funny the perception of Jake by non-fans. This is definitely going to be the big make-or-break film of his career. The role that propels him to the upper echelon of Hollywood ranks or the one that cements him as an also-ran.

I haven't been this excited over one of his roles since BBM.

Interesting, Joeann! Jerry Bruckheimer who says he's been watching him for years, describes his "charisma" as well as acting gifts.

Who are these fanboys you quote? In other words whut's their demongraphics, and so forth. I guess they're not familiar with JBG's athletic track record, nor been "stuck by the ax of love" by his intensity, sensuality, and perhaps do not understand irony. :) who ARE these people, anyway?

Let's see, I checked out CHUD, Rotten Tomatoes and AIC. These sites tend to attract the male 16 to 34 demo so sought-after by Hollywood bean counters. As Gyllenhaalics, you and I know Jake's more than hitting a homerun on this one, but it seems there's still a sizable portion of the movie-going population with a very superficial impression of Jake's abilities and untapped potential.

What I find baffling is that Jake is physically bigger than Toby Maguire,Brad Pitt, Robert Downey Junior, Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom yet it doesn't seem to register to the casual viewer. Frankly, I'm salivating in anticipation of the body Jake will unveil for us in Persia.

I totally agree, I don't understand that especially as he's probably more agile than all of them except Robert (as he does martial arts training regularly) but definitely more athletic. I suppose it's good they're doubting his abilities as it will be a nice huge suprise when he delivers the goods. Oodles and oodles of charisma has our darling thats just been waiting for a role like this.

Hi Xenia - another good film :)

Hi Paul - I loved Joan Plowright in Enchanted April - how her heart melted in that Italian sun. Just gorgeous. I have to get hold of this fim again. And of course Jim Broadbent was superb in it as well.

Hey Pia, that's a good point! PoP will not be R rated, which is not necessarily a good thing, as you say :)

Hi JoeAnn - I can't understand it all either. These people have an image of Jake in their heads going back a long way - this is one reason why I think Jake is right to do this movie. It is interesting though to see how some people perceive Jake.

Ola Monica :D
