Every inch the charismatic prince - Jake goes PoP and escapes 2012

It is clear that for some, Jake Gyllenhaal is an unlikely choice for the role of Prince Dastan in Prince of Persia. One can only assume that these commentors come from the gaming world and have had little experience of the cinema since the days of Donnie Darko. Clearly, not enough people saw Jarhead. But a lot of people will see the Prince of Persia.

The news that Jake will indeed be the Prince of Persia was broken by Hollywood Reporter, who gave us some background: 'In the fantasy adventure, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a young prince in 6th century Persia who must join forces with Tamina (Arterton), a feisty and exotic princess, to prevent a villainous nobleman from possessing the Sands of Time, a gift from the gods that can reverse time and allow its possessor to rule the world. Doug Miro and Carlo Bernard, Jordan Mechner and Boaz Yakin wrote the script, which is based on the games created by Jordan Mechner. Bruckheimer is producing, while Mike Stenson, Chad Oman and Patrick McCormick are executive producing. Bruckheimer praised Gyllenhaal as "charismatic" and has high hopes for Arterton, who tested for the role. Bruckheimer declined comment on the "Persia" budget other than to say, "It's not one of our smaller productions." Production is set to start in July in Morocco and England.'

Variety added more from Bruckheimer: '"He's a wonderful actor," Bruckheimer said. "He's someone I've been watching for a long time and somebody I've always wanted to work with."'

While we know Bruckheimer for the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy, British director Mike Newell has directed some gems over the years, including Dance with a Stranger, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Donnie Brasco and my own personal favourite Enchanted April - all of these films have been characterised by fine acting, attracting to more than one project actors of the calibre of Miranda Richardson for example. And just as Maggie Gyllenhaal is to act in a future film directed by Sam Mendes, Jake will now be acting for one of his sister's past directors - Newell directed Maggie, Julia Roberts and Kirsten Dunst in Mona Lisa Smile, back in 2003.

And as for the nonsense that Jake doesn't look Persia enough....just remember this and I think this picture says it all.

However, a note of warning: not even that most follically gifted of actors, Jake Gyllenhaal, can be expected to grow the locks modelled by the videogame Prince of Persia by July. This means two possibities: we will either be spared the long hair or we should brace ourselves for pictures of Jake in extensions.

The other film

Almost at the same time that Disney was announcing that it had its Prince, Columbia Pictures was telling Variety that it had chosen its lead for 2012, the forthcoming disaster pic by The Day After Tomorrow's Roland Emmerich. Fortunately, and that's putting it mildly, Jake's name is no longer associated with this and, instead, the leading man is another unusual choice - John Cusack. The other leading name in it is Chiwetel Ejiofor. (This actor always reminds me of when I was watching the BAFTA coverage back in 2006 and Jake was interviewed on the red carpet - he told the interviewer that he had given an award to Chiwetel and was proud of the time he had taken to make sure he pronounced it correctly, obviously well aware that some have not given him the same distinction.)

These choices, for 2012, Prince of Persia, Iron Man and The Dark Knight, may suggest that studios are looking for something a little different to entice savvy audiences into the theatres. In some cases, this may be desperation while, for others, it could be a fine move, and give familiar genres an unfamiliar twist. It's also interesting - at least to me - that both PoP and 2012 have fast turnarounds (if the strike holds off in the case of 2012) - both begin filming in July and have release dates exactly a year on.

Talking of familiar - here is the plot of 2012 from Hollywood Reporter and quoted here: 'Cusack is in talks to play divorced dad, writer and sometime limo driver Jackson Curtis, who goes on a heroic journey to save his family. [Chewetel] Ejiofor plays Adrian Helmsley, an idealistic science adviser to the president who also becomes a hero.'

what is going on with Nailed?
Is Jake back on set this week?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

As far as I know, Anna, filming is underway again. Other stars from the film (Tracy Morgan and Kirstie Alley) were seen in Columbia last night - although this person doesnt realise Kirstie is also in Nailed. Who knows? But I imagine that Jake is now back at work.

Here's hoping PoP can be like Pirates of the Caribbean (first one not sequals)-I see similarities.

The most important thing is filming in the UK. When and where? I reckon I could sneak a day off work to hang out with some mates if there was a chance of seeing Jake in Action Hero mode.... Keep me posted please!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Huge hug to you LJF - great to see you old friend! ('Old' is of course an endearment because you are younger than me :D) Only one day off? I do believe Arsenal will have finished for the year :D The filming will be at Shepperton and/or Pinewood but I still reckon it's worth a day out - we should persuade Anouska to bring a picnic :D

I'll keep you posted and texted xx

I did enjoy the first Pirates very much.

Anonymous said...

You're a mind-reader, WDW, I was thinking about a picnic today. I'd heard Pinewood only, but wherever it is we'll have a go.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Anouska :D I must have had my medieval mystic headdress on! I've been hearing both studios so I don't know which yet. I wonder if they'll do Morocco first. Maybe they would need to for tan consistency :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Forgot to say that proImDb has Jake and the Prince story up on its front page today :D

WDW, you make the most wittiest headings for posts and you just could not resist putting Jake back in spandex! What are you trying to do to us ;DD

To continue from my previous comments, there will always be those who wish to protect their own imaginarium of how a project/film etc should be rather than making it HW, especially the gamers. If Jake thinks parts of the script is mush, he'll say so, I'm sure. I do admire his professionalism and care of projects he takes - I find it a little strange that no co-stars (apart from Jarhead but that's understandable) have said negative things about him. He wants to do a good job.

I do have trepidations about Bruckheimer and yes POTC 2&3 were mush but completely watchable because of Jonny and only because of him - Keira and Orlando were extremely disappointing. But Bruckheimer's projects usually have the winning formula - like CSI. ..And how flattering for Jake that Jerry's been watching him for some time waiting for the right project to cast him in.. that's awesome.

Jake deserves big roles like this and he deserves big pay checks too that enable him to do his own projects or ventures in the future. And to do the big physical stuff while he's still in peak condition to do. I know none of this is new but this is his time now to take on these giant roles. I was going to say something crude about wardrobes, Chelsea shirts and jumping but I'll refrain, instead I'll say 'No more basketball for you Jake until the end of PoP'.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba :D I think Bruckheimer's words about Jake were really flattering and a tribute to Jake. This could be an amazing project, with Jake at its heart and also with the new Bond girl. Jake is the professional and while this is probably a very canny role choice it should also be a lot of fun. I love your comment about how Jake deserves this at the peak of his physical powers - absolutely! And it'll be good for us too :D As you say, a giant role will also give Jake a lot of freedom - he is one actor I cannot imagine typecast.

I can't wait to see Jake doing all this leaping about!!

Anonymous said...

You know I've heard of Pinewood and Shepperton but actually have no idea where either are!! Can one get there by train?? (Getting excited already). I dont expect Jake to clash with Arsenal again unless Jake only films at weekends ;o)
A day out with the BAFTA girlies + picnic + Jake (- long hair) would = awesome. More than the odd day off may raise suspicion!

Hugs to Kate and Nouska and Ruby xxx

Ruby said...

((((LJF)))) great to see you! We need to catch up, drink beer, eat food, see Jake. :D

Can I just gush for a second? I luuuurve John Cusack. I mean really. I was never that keen on 2012 when I heard about it but I can totally see John and Chiwetel in those roles as described. JC writes great dialogue too, so maybe he'll ensure that it isn't too lame and clunky, like some disaster movies *cough* TDAT *cough* :D

I vote for hair extensions! This I can't wait to see. :D

twistedlogic said...

I'm looking forward to POP more and more by the minute :D I do still have some reservations but even the film turns out to be not so good, it won't be the end of the world. Jake's already proved his worth as an actor and that's not going to disappear over night, even if he does make a dodgy film now and again. But that's a worst case scenario,it sounds as if it could be a big success artistically and commercialy, so bring it on, I say!
And of course there are added bonuses like the fact Jake is going to look so hot the film is going to have to have a health warning slapped on it AND he's gonna be in London for a while. I am totally up for a road trip!
As for the naysayers who are doubting Jake's ability to carry this role off, I'm already looking forward to seeing them eat their words :D

I only have one major worry, and it is a crucial one:will Jake have to get rid of his chest hair for POP? From what I've seen Dastan has a smooth chest and also for some reason the media seem to think smooth chested men are more appealing than hairy chested men(I'm thinking of Freddie Ljungberg having to wax his chest for the CK ads) so I'm very concerned for Jake's chest hair. I'm hoping that whoever decides these things will go for historical accuracy (I don't suppose men waxed their chest hair in 6th Century Persia) rather than modern day convention;)

PS:Yay!!! My copy of INT is in the post:D

Ruby said...

My INT DVD is on its way too TL. Must be the same batch. :D

Yep, Jake will need to be waxed. Everywhere. Sorry WDW. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

LJF! Be great to see you :D

Hey Gushing Rubes :D I know you lurrrrve Cusack, so maybe he'll bring something good to this role. No hair extensions!!

Hi TL! I love the idea of Jake looking so hot in PoP that it'll come with a warning :D I totally agree with you about the chest hair - Don't mess with Jake's chest, Newell! And that's a good point about the historical accuracy - 6th-century Persians didn't wax! And I was an archaeologist for many years!

Ruby, no!!! No waxing, but if it's gotta be done, will there be a waxing video along the lines of the Jarhead diaries?!

Good news about INT - I feel less guilty now for getting the last copies :D

twistedlogic said...

Hey Ruby! I wondered if your INT DVD would be on its way too, glad to hear it is:)

But about the waxing - you are joking, right? Or have you read it somewhere reliable? I know it may seem trivial to most people, but it's a really serious matter to me.

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW! Posting at the same time again:D I suppose a waxing video would be quite funny, but it could never make up for Jake being chest hair-less. Let's hope everyone realises it wouldn't be true to the character for him to be waxed and they leave well alone. otherwise this road trip could turn into a protest march;)

Ruby said...

I'm speculating, TL. And trying to get a rise out of you and WDW. :D It worked - yay me ;-)

It's not that serious to me. My preference is him as nature intended but I don't really mind so much about the hair on his body as that on his head. It'll all grow back. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - what with you protesting about the waxing and Ruby protesting against long hair Mike Newell'll be running for the hills :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I was just about to say that, Ruby - it will grow back and quickly but if Jake's gonna be running around in a movie for two hours, much of the time without a short, I'd prefer to see his chest in full hairy glory :D Buuuut, I'll gratefully take what I get given :)

Anonymous said...

Rubes, no dissing the TDAT. It has some beautiful moments.

Anonymous said...

"Buuuut, I'll gratefully take what I get given :)"

Not me, WDW!

Never forgave Disney for killing Bambi's mother, but if Jake's chest hair gets waxed, Disney gets axed.

Monica said...

If this movie makes success, Jake will be elected the most sexy man in the world by People in the coming year! Hehehehehehe

Who is the villain of this film?

Nicole said...

hey everyone! I haven't had time to catch up on all the posts..I hope everyone is doing well! I have been so busy with classes!

twistedlogic said...

That's a relief, Ruby! For a minute there I was worried it was official. I do have a sense of humour about most things, but not Jake's chest hair, I take that very seriously indeed (yes, I know I need help ;)
I agree with WDW, it would be such a waste for Jake to be running around shirtless and no chest hair for us to drool over. I'm also hoping he will grow his hair long. Not sure about the goatee style face fuzz, but you can't have evrything.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Pia! How can you mention Bambi?! I was traumatised by that film as a tiny vulnerable child, and even more so for Dumbo :( I do, however, love EPCOT at Walt Disney World (WDW yeay!) so much I will forgive them - mostly for the margaritas in Mexico and the wheat beer in Germany and the Bass in the UK...

Hi Monica! That is an excellent point! I wonder who the baddie will be, hmmmm.... Any ideas, anyone? Usually the baddies in these films are old British character actors or just Gary Oldman. How about Toby Stephens or Christopher Ecclestone? Any US choices?

Good to see you Nicole :D Good luck with the studies. Any signs of trailers with Jake written on them?....

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL - posting at the same time again :D No, no, no to the long hair!!! If they do wax Jake's chest maybe they'll be a press release apologising to his army of Gyllenhaalics :)

Anonymous said...

I'm tired of baddie Brits, WDW! I want a baddie with another accent.

These old thesps should just refuse. Yeah I know, the school fees.

twistedlogic said...

It'll take more than a press release to appease this Gyllenhaalic if they mess with the chest hair!
I don't know about the baddie, the thought that there are other characters in this movie hadn't crossed my mind.

Monica said...

Perhaps Ewan McGregor?
But I think he would not accept part of a film these!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I know, Anouska, you watch a big movie, hear a Brit accent and then immediately think 'Oh that's the baddie'.

Hey TL - yep, afraid to say it but there will be other characters in this movie ;D Apparently the princess is 'feisty' :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Monica - no, I can't see Ewan as a baddie in a film like this. He'd be the main star in something else instead.

Ruby said...

Who would be a worthy adversary for Jake?

hmmm, this could get slashy, I need to give this serious thought. I too am sick of the Brits being the bad guys.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Get as slashy as you want :D

Ruby said...

Never forgave Disney for killing Bambi's mother, but if Jake's chest hair gets waxed, Disney gets axed.

Careful what you say about the mouse empire, Pia (ooh that sounded like an echo!). :D

twistedlogic said...

OMG! As if Prince Jake isn't going to be hot enough, now it's getting slashy too *faints*

Ruby said...

although Jake and Ewan wrestling......maybe somewhere wet......... clingy clothes, dripping hair.....

the bad guy needs to be a bit older than Jake ...hmmm......

Anonymous said...

i am so late... because of that match in Moscow...

mmm... slashy, i like the sound of it. How about baddie with a Spanish accent? they could bring Javier Bardem? without the NCFOM hairdo, of course.

Jake with hair extension??? what a ... scary thought. Just the idea that someone is going to hot-iron to straighten his hair is scary enough...

getting Jake's hair and head right is always a major issue in his film projects, no? :P

twistedlogic said...

Ewan McGregor or Javier Bardem mudwrestling with Jake!! Jeez, Ruby and Winterbird, what are you trying to do to me?!:D

RDJ is older than Jake and they have great chemistry together...

Anonymous said...

There is apparently an evil "vizier" or prime minister of the maharjah or sultan or somesuch who is enemy of the prince. definely not a Brit.

aside from similarly traumatic experience as WDW with Bambi, I was also terrified by Snow White's mother, and the monkeys in the Kipling tale, or was it Lion King. I dont do Disney, too violent.

Even Florida Disney world, I saw a little kid kick porky pig in the shins and the pig said a four letter world.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I disappear for a few minutes and come back and Ruby has Jake and Ewan doing naked mud wrestling!! What certificate is this film?!

Who won the match, Winterbird? I've lost the remote control for the TV :D Someone's going to iron Jake's hair?? Noooo! This sounds like a horror film now :D

TL - good point about RDJ :D

Thanks for the info, Pia :D An evil vizier couldn't be a Brit - hmmmm (I was worried it could be Charles Dance...). I love Disney World - except for the Magic Kingdom, which is dry :( Snow White was the first movie I ever saw. I was about 3 and it was in Yorkshire and I still remember it :D

twistedlogic said...

Hi Pia, I know what you mean about Disney villains - I remember being absolutely terrified of Cruella De Vil,I had nightmares for weeks:(

Anonymous said...

O man, Bardem as the evil Vizier. I was going to suggest Javier, but wasnt sure he'd be up to the parkour, and also he's quite busy right now starring in a personal fantasy of mine heh heh heh - he's HOT! ! !

Man U won on penalty shoot-out... sudden death. It was quite dramatic.

I think they need to do something about that Prince of Persia's hair, to be honest... at the moment, I can't imagine Jake in that shoulder-length straight hairdo..... and they are going to apply bronzer on Jake's face too, aren't they?

Anonymous said...

I can't handle the chest waxing

*covers eyes*

Ruby said...

TL - good point about RDJ

oh my yeah..... Damn that looks good in my head :P

Talking of Evil Disney - what about 'It's a Small World?' in The Magic Kingdom? Now that's evil!!!

twistedlogic said...

Man U won on penalties, WDW. I only watched that bit cos really I didn't want either team to win but I have to say I'm glad that Cashley Cole and Anelka have found out that money can't buy you medals, serves em right for leaving Arsenal;) I did feel sorry for John Terry crying his eyes out though:(

Back to Jake...Seems I'm the only one who likes the cartoon Prince's hair, I think it would suit Jake:)

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

I resisted the temptation to post last night because you were all having such a lovely time getting excited about Jake playing the "Prince Of Persia" and I didn't want to be a party pooper
;-)

Maybe if I spend long enough reading lots of enthusiastic posts about it, the premise of the film and the idea of Jake playing a character from a computer game will grow on me. I really want to be just as excited as the rest of you about this, and admittedly the thought of Jake leaping about athletically and bare chested (sorry TL,but I'd love it smooth just as much as hairy)does have a certain appeal!

Given Disney's track record and production values, not to mention all the money they are able to throw at it (and doubtless throw at Jake, which may have had some bearing on him signing on the dotted line ;-) ) this may well turn out to be one of the better fantasy adventure films and receive rave reviews for its state-of-the-art CGI - but it also has the potential to be a cringeworthy turkey, even with a great actor and fine physical specimen like Jake in the lead role.Must admit, when I first heard he's signed on the dotted line for "PoP" I really thought that for this and other recent choices he needed a check-up from the neck up!

I really hope, for Jake's sake as well as ours, that my trepidation about this latest role proves totally unfounded and the film is a triumph for the genre as well as at the box office and thereby a triumph for Jake. Keep working on me folks, please! I really want to be looking forward to this as much as all of you are!

twistedlogic said...

I disappear for a few minutes and come back and Ruby has Jake and Ewan doing naked mud wrestling!! What certificate is this film?!

LOL!I just read back through the comments and Ruby just said wrestling, then I added the mud and WDW the naked - talk about Chinese whispers!:D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Winterbird and TL - great result, hate penalties though... :(

I have real problems with this poP hairdo. I wonder if Jake has mentioned it. Do you think he saw the blurb and went 'OMG!' and then tried to talk the producers into letting him have a haircut?

Ruby, It's a Small World is a truly evil ride and it is hypnotic. After you get off that ride you have been hypnotised to do bad things :(

Hey Pia - Cruella is scary, that's for sure. She always reminds me of Glenn Close now. Maybe the baddie will be a seductive older woman?!

twistedlogic said...

Hey (((Nadine))) As it happens, I was just about to email you telling you why I think this could be a really good move for Jake ;) Speak to you soon, hun xx

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

I've just read back the comments you were all posting while I was agonising over my ramblings!

TL, what with the mention of slashy possibilities and you suggesting RDJ as the (very sexy) baddie for Jake to bounce off (hehehehehe;-),well with that as a prospect I could warm to this project after all! (but not the long hair, sorry!)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nadine :D There is always the chance that this could be a turkey but, personally speaking, I have far more confidence about PoP than I have ever had about Nailed. I've always loved these computer games, I've played them for years, and I think Disney could do a good job with a story that has all the elements in it. I like the director as well. And Jake will be perfect! IT's been a long time since a movie like this - a real fantasy adventure straight (kindof) from the pages of 1001 Arabian Knights But we have lots of time to win you over :D

And apparently, according to 'sources' it features naked mud wrestling.... Isn't that right, TL!

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

Hey TL,hun, look forward to that e-mail! If anyone can persuade me "PoP" could be a good idea, then you're the woman for the job :-) xxx

Ruby said...

Ruby, It's a Small World is a truly evil ride and it is hypnotic. After you get off that ride you have been hypnotised to do bad things :(

Hey, you could be on to something here. Maybe we are all sleeper agents for Disney and we've been triggered by the PoP announcement. Hence our enthusiasm. Nadine has perhaps never experienced the happiest place on earth? ;-)

:D :D

Anouska - you might to remind me again what those 'moments' in TDAT were! :D

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

That may be a large part of my problem,WDW,I've always preferred watching a plank warp to playing computer games ;-) And as you say,you have plenty of time to convert me to this project and you're mob-handed to boot :-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

It is all conditioning by the mouse... I wonder if Jake will get free Disney World tickets for doing a Disney movie and if he's a rollercoaster kinda guy or if he prefers the water rides.... these things are important.

The best moments in TDAT also involve water. I doubt this element will be a big element of PoP.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Nadine, yep, I'm mobhanded :D I also recommend you get hold of a PS2 and help the Prince to control time and make it stand still in order to kill the baddies with a sabre :D

twistedlogic said...

LOL, WDW :D I'm sure our sources can come up with all kinds of ways to sell this to Nadine - sorry hun, resistence is futile;D

KeepCalm+CarryOn said...

I'm off to bed now folks. I'll try not to have nightmares about your methods of indoctrination ;-)
Night night my lovelies xxx

Now here's a thought - break with the tradition of the video game character and leave the chest hair alone, please don't tamper with it! It's beautiful. Some facial hair, and with slightly longer hair. Jake is truly blessed in this regard, you've got to see his beautiful jawline with five o-clock shadow as Zodiac's Robert Graysmith in High Def. And the penetrating blue eyes amidst the dark eyebrows and dark hair is just *sigh*. He's a beaut! And a damn fine actor, most importantly. :)

Anonymous said...

they might leave the chest hair, interesting thought you stated there.
They might totally break tradition and we might be really surprised how they interpret the prince

Hey, there's even my reply to that post! Maybe I should not because it's a waste of time but I was pissed off and I couldn't hold myself...:)

I think that Jake will do a wonderful job because he is a good actor and has an athletic frame.
He's gonna 'act', after all, noone has crowned him Prince for real! :)

Finally, have someone noticed the resemblance?

Watch this video (it's a cinematic trailer for PoP Warrior Within), judge yourself:

Morning everyone :D What a great night, thanks to you all!

Hi anons :) I just loved Jake as Graysmith, loved the look, everything. And it's very exciting thinking how they'll interpret the Prince of the video games - just so long as Jake's not put in slippers with the ends curled up...

Morning Xenia :D Good for you for the comment! And you were perfectly polite.

Have a great day everyone :D Beautiful day here.

If they had been smart, they would have worked Emmy's audition (in which she French-kissed Jake) into the film.....

Afternoon WDW,
I have to get back here and keep reading, but first I have to thank you for this post, because it helped me in a silly discussion on another forum...it was a silly discussion to me... that was all about Jake isn't Persian, isn't ethnic enough, what ever. I linked the video of SNL and I posted the pic of Jake...my bad...next to the Iranian Pres, to make my points.
I gave your credit but couldn't get back here as fast as I wanted so again TY.
I couldn't locate those files anyplace yesterday and I knew I could make them more aware of the silliness of their arguments, if I had that clip and photo as visual aids.:lol
*sass bows down and says TY*
