Jake - 'I'm just like part of the audience, too'

There aren't many things better to do on a warm and sunny May Sunday than head to the beach, and Jake and Reese did just that yesterday, having a lazy day with their dogs and a picnic. However, even though Reese wore a bikini, Jake didn't take his shirt off, not even once - possibly, Jake realised that his chest is now so finely honed by weeks of training that he wanted to spare our senses. We can take it, Jake, honest. And are those new sunspecs?

Even though these pictures show Jake to be a responsible pet owner, I don't know if I'll ever get accustomed to pictures of Jake carrying a bag of dog doings. Many thanks to IHJ for the new pics and there you will find many more.

Watching myself is hard

It was a great night watching Brokeback on British terrestrial TV last night and one wonders if a new wave of viewers is today going through the process that many of us experienced over two years ago. However, this also made me wonder about how Jake feels watching himself on the screen. According to this interview, Jake ' said he doesn't normally like watching himself, even if he has a bag of popcorn, no butter, to distract him. "I don't usually have the best time watching because I am so critical, which I don't like being," he said. Even "if it's a great movie and the story works, watching myself is hard."' [Judging by this comment, perhaps Jake would prefer British sweet popcorn?]

Although Jake has said that he was uncomfortable watching some scenes in Secretary, in this same interview Jake says of Maggie's performance: 'The only weirdness is watching someone you know so well perform," Gyllenhaal said. "The fact that it was provocative and sexual — you know, I don't really find those things as shocking or important as people find them or as people think I should find them. She gave an incredible performance. That's what I saw." Besides, he said, watching others is easier because at that point, "I'm just like part of the audience, too."' I suppose that's the case - if the acting is good enough and the script is good enough, then you forget who you're watching, even if it's a sister.

As for Maggie, when Jake turned round in his seat at the premiere of Brokeback to see his sister's response: 'all I could see in her face were two swollen eyes. She'd been crying that hard...' The tissue sharing antics of those close to Jake at a viewing of Brokeback are clear from another account, this time by Anne Hathaway.

And finally

Hopefully, Nailed will be getting back on track today with filming resumed for the second time. The whole state of affairs has highlighted the current troubles facing independent filmmakers, demonstrating that it's not just the smaller films with the less well known stars that can be impacted. More on this here.

Pictures from IHJ.

Reese is mighty cute at the beach!

That G, such a gentleman to carry the pups poop, and spare Reese such a task

How he looks at her! melts the heart, yes?

Hi Anna, thanks for the link, I was just looking at that. I don't think it's surprising Jake was carrying the bag as it was probably a gift from his own dog :D

He looks really happy and relaxed nowadays! Not surprising, career is good, he's in a happy relationship, he's rich and beautiful. Life can't be any better! Sigh! ;) That's really great for him!:)

"How he looks at her! melts the heart, yes?"

Melts the heart, not. Not at all. Chills the heart, stills the heart. Just sayin' Everybody with his/her own projection in this matter. And I'd rather not hear the projections of others. Id like J's private life to remain private. My 'druthers.

What are the dog poop laws in LA - on the street and on the beach. Anybody know? And to whom belong the lil black runt in the Iheartjake pix? Is this one part of the family?

Thanks so much for article from Salt Lake paper - times they are a-changin', for sure!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi 'A Fan' :)

Hey there Pia! I'm guessing that black dog is Reese's. LA dogs are usually so well behaved and groomed etc that I've always thought they didn't poop until today!

I found that newspaper article very interesting - especially in the light of Cannes going on at the moment as it is.

Hope you're having a good day :D

Ruby said...

I have no need to know the LA dog poop laws in my life! :D I'm pleased to say. ;-)

Nice to see Anne Hathaway in your post WDW. I watched Becoming Jane last night. It was ok, not brilliant, but she did a decent British accent.

James McAvoy was suitably dashing. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Ruby :D I've not had much call for it either, so long as Oxford dogs and meerkats behave themselves, that's what matters :D

I do like Anne very much - I should see Becoming Jane - I thought you might like Mr McAvoy :D

Ruby said...

I should have said English accent actually, 'cause James had to do one too. I prefer his natural Scottish though. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I can't imagine James doing English...

Anonymous said...

Wow, chills the heart, thats "nice" pia. Another big Jake fan.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

No more of that, anonymous poster. People are allowed an opinion, especially those people who put a name to their opinions, you don't have to agree with it and I would appreciate you being polite.

twistedlogic said...

Hey WDW and everyone! I'm still in a fragile post-BBM state tonight. I hadn't watched it all the way through for so long, but it hurts just like the first time:(

Interesting quotes there from Jake, about how if the acting's good enough you forget who you're watching - that's definitely the case with BBM. And about not finding the sexual scenes and nudity in Secretary shocking. Something that struck me last night before BBM started was the warning about strong language and scenes of a sexual nature but (unless I'm mistaken) I don't remember them warning about the violence in some of the scenes. Personally, the scenes I can't watch are Ennis being beaten up by the guy in the truck and of course, Jack's murder. But apparently that's not shocking enough to warrant a warning. Weird.

I'll have to try and watch Becoming Jane - Anne Hathaway is brilliant as Lureen and I loved James McAvoy in Shameless so seeing them together should be good.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey TL! I'm feeling a bit emotionally drained too. I noticed that about the warning before too and I did have a little rant about that to Mr WDW. I feel the movie should have a warning of great sadness.

You're so right about not seeing. I chose those quotes just because of how when you watch BBM you don't - or at least I don't - see Jake or Heath. I think Anne was extraordinary too, and Michelle. I appreciate both of the women more now when I see it all the way through. Take it easy tonight :)

Anonymous said...

I am SO thankful Ang didnt show the gay bashing scene but in a flash, and, of course, in both story and film, we never know if it really happened that way.

I love to see Ennis being violent because of the wonderful way he can use his arms and legs. What perfect casting in synch with Annie's description of Ennis as a horseman and born fighter.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Pia, that is so true about Ennis - I was thinking just that last night with the scene when Ennis has the fight with the guy in the truck - all legs.

Anonymous said...

Michelle was stunning. Of course, so were they all. Michelle W plays Edie Sedgewick in Im Not There. Didnt recognize her.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

The contrast between those two roles is amazing!

Anonymous said...

WDW did you see Stephanie's comment on IHJ re the cycling pics. Apparently Splash asked them to delete them and she advised blogs to delete tham as well.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks anon, I hadn't seen that, so I appreciate it. I've deleted the entire post with apologies to all those who posted comments on it. Thanks for the heads up :D

twistedlogic said...

Pia and WDW, you are both far stronger women than me. I know what you mean about Ennis's limbs flying about (I'm always very appreciative of that in the playfight after SNIT :D) but I can't bear to see him being beaten up in that scene outside the bar:( I don't have any problem watching Ennis punching Jack on the mountain, but that's a different kind of violence, it's an expression of Ennis's love, in a twisted kind of way.
And I agree about the women in the film, it's impossible not to feel sympathy for them all too. That's why it's so tragic, cos everyone goes through so much pain through no fault of their own:(

Damn, I'm sorry to be such a miserable cow tonight:(
Maybe I should watch the Santa dance from Jarhead or something to cheer myself up.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey don't worry TL - although if you feel like watching the Santa hat scene, I think it's just what the doctor ordered! I must watch that this week. It was my antidote 2 years ago so it can be again. Maybe in the future, PoP can be an antidote too, or Nailed :D Everyone has a tragedy in BBM and that's why it's so powerful and why it makes us not want to have that in our own lives.

Anonymous said...

Hi, TL. I was so persuaded of Ennis terrible guilt, and how whenever he was feeling uptight his solution ws to beat somebody up or get beat up. I thot this scene so true to who he was and identified with his need to get beat up. Oh I loved the whole bit so much, in the kitchen, the snow outside, the kids yelling goodbye daddy etcetc. maybe I'll go watch it. no, I cant. Im still watching INT.

Ruby said...

know what you mean about Ennis's limbs flying about

that's a very impressive kick in the 4th July scene. :P

that's part of what I loved about Heath - the way he could move his body, totally in tune and very graceful. Lots of examples of it in his movies that I'm too tired to list right now.

Bedtime for me I think. Night all. *-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Very graceful - and I love to see Heath in his horseriding roles. in INT he's just every inch of the sexy movie star to me. Night Ruby *)

twistedlogic said...

Pia, I totally agree about that whole scene. I think the only way Ennis could deal with his emotional pain was to turn it into physical pain, either against himself or against others, cos that was something he could understand and,to an extent, control. I could go on all night but I'll spare you all(and myself!).

I wish I could watch INT but it's still out of stock:(

I think I might take you up on your suggestion, WDW, and see if the Santa hat works:)

It's not like me to be lost for words with which to respond to a Brokeback-centred post, but it's hard to be anything other than taciturn when you're losing the will to live ;-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I can't help feeling guilty, TL, that I took PlayUSA's last copy of IMNT! Ruby hasn't got her's either :( I'm sorry!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

^^^ That was INT - I've no idea what movie IMNT is....

Hi taciturn Nadine :D Thanks for the PBS hug - I think we're suffering tonight - at this rate I'm going to be sticking Lou Reed on the CD Player ;D

A colleague of mine told me she watched BBM for the first time last night and she said she find it very moving and she enjoyed it - even though she fell asleep after Ennis got the shirts from Jack's parents' house (I know, it's so weird!), so she asked me what happened next... how do I explain the pain, the regret and love in that final trailer scene over breakfast in the office??

but still I am always happy to hear that people are watching it for the first time...

I watched about 20 mins of Candy afterwards, but I couldn't... it's funny that, contrary to popular belief, I separate Ennis and Heath quite clearly in my mind, but the character in Candy... there's more "young Heath" in him, if that makes sense.

I am sorry this comment is rather irrelevant to the post, but I am still in full BBM mode :P

oh but hey, Jake - you need to get back to work, or I'll see you in my office (headmaster self... lol)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

hi Winterbird :D How are you feeling now? It is very good to hear of new people seeing BBM but to fall asleep at such a crucial point?! I so agree about how with BBM it doesn't feel like Jake and Heath, that's how I could watch it straight after Heath died and last night I was thinking about the characters. But in any of the other films it's Heath I see - especially in INT as I saw that just 2 days before he died. And so Candy would be too painful for me too - I didn't watch it. I still have Casanova wrapped up and unwatched. I do enjoy watching Knight's Tale though :D

I like to think of Jake back at work finishing his film for us :D I'm greedy!

Anonymous said...

My sis didn't mention it, which makes me think she saw it.

Anonymous said...

Hey there,

Well, us here in the states didn't get to see BBM on network tv but I do share your feelings re: Heath, Jack and Ennis.

However, couldn't Jake looking lovely and fit in the new pics be of some solace?!?!

Maybe it's just me...

Have a good evening all.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Anouska :D That's true - people could have seen it and not be letting on....

Hi Get Real :D You see what happens, you stick BBM on national TV and the whole country come down with the Brokeback Blues! But Jake looking good always has restorative powers - and I don't think Jake has ever looked fitter :D we are in for a treat with this year's movies! It's not just you.

Have a good evening too :D

Anonymous said...

Hi All,

What I remember about that scene when Ennis lashes out at the first person to cross his path, is that next scene in the mountains with Jack, how peaceful he becomes. It's crushing to think that someone could not express their feelings openly, and worse, is made to feel badly about them needlessly, by society. I haven't seen BBM on network TV here in the US yet. I've watched it so many times I have lost count, and will watch it many more times, because I treasure it so much. I did pick up a copy of A Knight's Tale, but haven't been able to watch it yet for some reason.

Jake is looking very Prince of Persia-ish in the latest pics; his physique is reminding me of the character, with the slim lower body and triangular uppper body. Horrors, I must correct my post from yesterday; I should have typed that Jake looks fit for parkour, not parquet! And I wasn't talking about the Boston Garden's basketball court floor or margarine. LOL ;)

Anonymous said...

Todd Haynes commentary on INT was made after Heath's death: TH speaks of how hard it was to watch him. H beautiful in this role. O I said that. I'll say it again. Fascinating commentary.

Nadine! Dont be sick!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Bertie :D I hope you get to see Knight's Tale. I love it. There's a dancing scene in it that makes me smile and smile :D Jake's body is honed to perfection at the moment - absolutely magnificent!! I love him when he's not honed to perfection but now... Spot on for Prince of Persia. It really feels like it must be for a big physical role. Good news for us :D

Hey Pia - I didn't know the commentary was done after Heath's death... That'll make it hard to listen to. I should listen to it as I love the film but need help from Todd in understanding some of it - especially as I was never a Dylan fan.

Anonymous said...

I will wait to see Jake nekkid before I decide whether or not he is indeed honed and toned to perfection. & I hear from some of you that he's more gorgeous in person so I want that, too.

Just sayin'

Wet Dark and Wild said...

It's true, Pia :D I hope you see that too.

Night all :D

Evening peeps,

I know this is a Jake-centric blog and I will all ways follow those rules, but since the anon poster did comment on his relationship with Reese, I must say that as a long long time fan of Reese W. I am not chilled by their relationship; I am happy. And anon, it's cool if you put your name to your post because you will find warm acceptance on this blog. There are other posters here who are thrilled/happy with Jake and Reese...WDW tolerates all of us...thank goodness:):)
Because of Jake Gyllehnaal and Heath Ledger and Ang Lee and all the wonderful people who gifted us with BBM, same sex couples are getting together openly more and more, they are marrying, rearing children, running for office, coming off the down low after years of shame and guilt, and out of the closet.
Therefore; if Jake is happy with Reese I am happy for them both, life is too short not to be.

Jake said something like this once...everyone wants to be free to love but they don't want this freedom for everyone else in the world.
Jake is free to love and I like to think that I am tolerant and loving enough to allow and accept him and his loves.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sass! Thanks for that comment - it's teeming with good points :D This site focuses very much on Jake and his roles and, because of that, everyone is welcome here and, as you say, warmly welcomed. I love the community here and I'm proud of it, not least because it is so diverse and yet focused on one thing - Jake. I welcome all additions to it (a name is always good incidentally :D).

The only rules here are to be respectful and polite to Jake, to each other and to everyone else, and to be tolerant. Thinking Jake is hot is also good...

Hmmm, on that note I'll get off. G'night all :D

twistedlogic said...

I think everyone who posts here wants Jake to be happy,I certainly do and I know just about everyone here feels the same. The trouble is, like you say Sass, "IF Jake is happy with Reese I am happy for them both - we don't KNOW whether he is happy or not because at the end of the day, none of us has a clue what goes on in his private life and that's how it should be - it's no one's business but his. Of course people will draw conclusions from the pics:some people will conclude that he's happy, some will conclude that he's not, and others won't give a toss either way as long as he keeps on making good films and looking hot. Unfortunately, some people's tolerance and acceptance doesn't extend to people who don't share their views(which in any case can only be subjective) where Jake's private life is concerned, which is why I think it makes for a much happier and less stressful time when we steer clear of the subject and concentrate on Jake as an actor and a Sex God.
Sorry if I offend anyone, that's not my intention. just thinking out loud, tired and suffering from PBS and PMT (not a good combination). Nite all xx

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hope you feel better tomorrow, TL :)

I'm going to close this discussion down here. This site is not about debating whether or not Jake and Reese are a happy couple. It's neverending and tedious to the extreme. Fortunately, on WDW, most posters have shown themselves to be tolerant of each other and respectful - for that I'm so grateful and that's how it should be. So let's move on.

Have I said lately that Jake is hot?

Anonymous said...

What I love about this blog is that it is primarily about Jake and his work. That said, of course I am thrilled for him if he is happy in love, whoever it may be with. If this is real with Reese, I do also admire that he is mature enough to appreciate a real woman, with children, who isn't built like a HW mannequin (entirely anyway), doesn't feel she can't to run to the corner store or take the dog out for a walk without glamming up for a HW premiere, and doesn't appear to be a shallow HW party girl. I like that they seem to enjoy doing things together that don't entail the typical drinking, drugging, and partying. And I'm sure the real woman curves adore him too. ;) But firstly, it's about his work for me.

WDW, Jake is hot - honed to perfection as Prince Dastan or with a little more to love on him in Brothers, as Jack Twist, Robert Graysmith and Douglas Freeman. ;) Nite all!

I agree! There are more pics of the same set where they are playful with each other and joking.
He seems so happy and I think much of it has to do with him being happy with Reese. He seems content and in a good place right now.
I'm happy for both of them.

Loving the beach pictures WDW, thanks!

I don't know if Jake is happy, and I doubt any of us here really know, so the discussion is rather pointless. But I do know what I am happy to see Jake with a beach towel (and not much or anyone else)... lol.

btw, WDW, I was posting here last night with hubby playing with his PSP next to me, he took a peek and saw your icon, he went like, "is that really Jake Gyllenhaal? he's answering fan mails there?" :P So I said, "i have many friends who look like Jake".

have a good day.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Winterbird :D Jake with a beach towel is a good sight and on that is for sure :) I think he likes stripey beach towels....

That's funny about your hubby and the icons - totally offtopic, but wouldn't mind oe of those PSPs - my PS2 is looking worn out.

Have a good day!

G'day everypeeps!

"But I do know what I am happy to see Jake with a beach towel (and not much or anyone else)... lol."

Funny line, WB! A wee bit of needed jump start in the morning. O I so hope Nailed get nailed. Comedy is a difficult genre. Some like it broad. I do. Existential, I dunno.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Pia :D Agreed, comedy is such a difficult genre. It takes something different to make each of us laugh. But I reckon Jake's going to be great - I loved some of the dialogue in Zodiac and the way Jake delivered it.

Have a great day :D

Anonymous said...

Todd Haynes speaks of a day shoot with Heath, a scene with Heath alone, unforgettable in his memory, cause they got along so well together and spent the day "cracking up"

Jake's comedic skills obvious in talk shows.

paulh said...

"Comedy is a difficult genre. Some like it broad. I do. Existential, I dunno." [Pia]

I like both kinds. I want to wear the mask of comedy in my life, and let others don the mask of tragedy.
That's why it irks me to see high-profile new comedies that are lame or worse. I have my fingers crossed about "Nailed."

I enjoyed "Baby Mama," which had the Saturday Night Live "Bronx Beat" actresses in it. Jake had a scene with them when he was on SNL.

Anonymous said...

Pia, Heath was HOT in IMT! I loved the nude scene... *dirty toughts*. Oh yeah, he did a great job too! ;)

Anonymous said...

I watched "I'm Not There" back in last October in film festival, it's my favourite Heath's performance after BBM. But I don't know when I'll be able to face it again. That Dylan's arrogance, vulnerability, charisma has a lot of Heath in it...

"Nailed"'s biggest gamble is not David O. Russell or Jake... it's Jessica Biel :P

Anonymous said...

well Jessica said just because she's "fit" (has a great body) doesnt mean she can't do comedy. La Monroe really dished it out! so here's hoping!

so WB you have confidence in the Gore kid?

oh it is wonderful to see Heath in INT! Todd speaks of him a few times as a "great actor".

Dylan's life reminds me too of some of the challenges of Jake - and made me think of Jake's sly ways of putting on those "Mister Joneses" who need to put a leash on human behavior.

Anonymous said...

p.s. correection

ironic, rather than sly

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone :D I've been missing out on a good discussion here - I've not seen anything Jessica's been in so I've no idea what to expect. Jake is just great on talk shows - perfect timing and delivery. Finally leaving work - see you all very soon :D

paulh said...

I've seen Jessica Biel in four movies:

"Next"
"Elizabethtown"
"The Illusionist"
"Rules of attraction"

Most of them were above average, in my estimation. "Elizabethtown" should have been edited down to a more managable length. Susan Sarandon tapdancing for ten full minutes? Get real!

Thank goodness for this discussion, just what is needed to get rid of PBMblues. I did not notice Jessica in Elizabethtown (that was a yawnfest!) nor the Illusionist, however, she was quite good in Next. She seems like an actress that blends into the story unnoticed, however, I'm sure acting alongside Jake will elevate her acting chops, afterall you never stop learning. Hope filming, fun and frolicks are happening over in SC.

Always great to see Jake but yeah man, lose the T-shirt and shorts willya. Where's the beachwear? He's just teasing us again. Comeon Jake, you need to win Torso of the Week again in Heat magazine ;D
