Jake Gyllenhaal looks forward to playing Broadway Joe

Obviously, if England had managed to qualify for the Euro 2008 tournament we would be getting ready to watch them lose in the final tonight, but they didn't and they won't and so instead we can sit back for some stress-free footie fun as Spain and Germany take each other on. It does make a change from the tennis, after all.

So through this extremely tenuous link, it seems appropriate that in a Q&A at the beginning of the new Parade magazine, there is a question about Jake: 'Is it true that Jake Gyllenhaal will star in a biopic about New York Jets great Joe Namath? A: Yes. Jake - who says he's often told he resembles the lengendary playboy-quarterback - is looking forward to playing "Broadway Joe." But the red-hot star has a busy dance card, and it could be a while before he slips on Joe's famous NO. 12 Jets jersey. Jake will soon start shooting Prince of Persia and has two other movies that already wrapped. Nailed, a political satire with Jessica Biel, and Brothers, involving the Afghan war, with Tobey Maguire.' Thanks to Trekfan for the information!

Jake has said 'I used to play football here and there, but I don't anymore.' No doubt, that will have to change in the run up to the biopic. Back in 2006, Jake was seen attending a game in Texas along with Lance Armstrong and Matthew McConaughey. He may have to catch some more games.

The possible sightings of Jake and Reese around London - being listed as among the attendees of the Nelson Mandela birthday concert and shopping in London at the weekend - gather pace and I wonder if Jake's going to be spending this evening in the traditional English manner of watching 'proper' football over a pint of lager and some pork scratchings. But Spain or Germany?

'He was a good man' - Christian Bale on missing Heath

For the main focus of Parade - Christian Bale and The Dark Knight - you can find out more here, including this quote from Christian about Heath Ledger: 'He was a unique character, a very infectious character. He was a good man, and I was glad to have spent time with him. He was somebody who I’d been seeing on a daily basis for months. It takes a long time to accept that someone’s gone, when all body and mind are telling you that this is somebody you will know for a great deal of time. He was something of a kindred spirit to myself.'

I saw the Christian Bale interview where he said these remarks. He was clearly very sad. I think they were really good friends as much as colleagues.

Even tho he is the Batman, I think Christian realizes and understands that with all the press for The Dark Knight, many questions will center around Heath, who cannot speak for himself. Christian appreciates that and is very graceful with it. I have always liked Christian very much, but even moreso now.

The picture of Jake with his baseball bat makes me smile. He is walking away virtually unrecognized, whilst Kirsten signs autographs. Thank you, WDW. I like this board!

Thanks very much for commenting, Anon. I really do agree that Christian Bale has been dealing with a very difficult and upsetting situation so well. As you say, it's inevitable that the publicity would focus on Heath and you can see what good friends they were. I like Christian more now too :)

That picture of Jake is one of my alltime favourites and always makes me smile :D

Thanks for the c. Bale interview.

But I'm perplexed on that other link. Where does it say in that girl's blog that she was in the Portobello Road? Or that Reese and Jake were in the Portobello Road?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Thanks :D You're right to be confused - I had an anonymous commentor on my last post who said the sighting was Portabello. I'll change the post. Thanks for pointing that out and I'm glad you enjoyed the interview :)

thats funny..every sunday I open up the Parade magazine just to read the questions and when I opened it up today I saw a picture of Jake..so of course that was the first question I read. hope everyone is having a great day! I know I am...I just got a call from the local radio station saying I just won 2 tickets to see Dave Matthews Band (i love them!!) in Charlotte on Tuesday!! i'm very excited!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nicole! Which picture did they choose of Jake? Congrats on wining those tickets - I've always wanted to go to Charlotte...

That girl is country singer Jesse James, she's i Londo to record if you read her myspace. She didn't give out the address for obvious reasons, but her mention of the "big market" and people who clicked on it and recognized the area put 2 and 2 togehter.

its a picture of him in a grey suit smiling..i'd be happy to scan it for you if you would like

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Anon :D I've actually been listening to some of the music on her myspace, I like it. I know London pretty well and 'big market' to me would mean Portobello or Camden.

Ooh yes please, Nicole :D Thanks very much.

I have the Parade magazine, but haven't had a chance to read it yet. I'm busy this afternoon making a beef stew to bring to my mother, who is celebrating her
88th birthday today. I told her I didn't want her to have to cook on her birthday. In a few minutes, I'll remove it from the stove, put it in the car, and head for her house. :-)

Jake's profile is a little like Joe Namath's but otherwise I don't see a huge resemblance. I think he resembles Christian Bale a little, hint, hint. ;-)

Yesterday I saw "Wall-E," and came away humming show tunes like "Hello, Wall-E." When you see the movie, you'll know why......

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sandy :D

Hey Paul - I hope your mum has a lovely birthday :) I don't know the movie Wall-E but then we don't get a big selection where I am. Jake doesn't remind me of Joe Namath but I think he could be made to look like him. I hope you have a good evening :)

Spain are winning so TL'll be happy :D

I think Jake does resemble Joe Namath and when I first heard he was going to do this project I thought it was perfect.

Here is a portrait of Joe Namath

and a pic of Jake

I think he looks simliar enough. In any case I think he makes a better Joe Namath than a Lance Armstrong imo

Hey Trekfan - thanks for the pics - Jake definitely looks suited to play Joe Namath. I think Jake will be good and I hope it comes off. It's also great to hear Jake is so keen. Thanks for the info about the mag :)

Hi everyone1 OT: on Jake's Eyelashes thread on DC there are two shots from BBM which I've never seen. It's FNIT and it's from a completely different angle than in the film or the DVD. It's on page 73

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Zodiac :) I saw those and they're very odd - showing Jack unbuckling his belt from a dfferent angle before moving the camera away from the tent entirely and not showing the rest of the scene. A whole new edited TV version. Hope you're having a good evening.

*stumbles in singing* Campeones, campeones...!!!! Thank you WDW for that tenuous link to Jake and proper football, so I can squee about Spain's victory without feeling guilty for being off topic:D It's Spain's first victory in a major tournament for 44 years, and the next World Cup in 2010 will be 44 years after 66, so there's hope for England yet;)
I'm so happy I can even forgive that miserable old git Leonard Cohen for not allowing his Glasto performance to be recorded:(

Sounds like we'll be waiting a while for this Joe Namath film to see the light. I can't say I'm too excited about it, mostly cos American football is a totally alien concept to me but also cos I wonder if it'll even be released here, cos apart from us lot who would go and see Jake just sitting there watching paint dry, I can't imagine there'd be much interest over here. Wait and see, I suppose...

Thanks Zodiac for the heads up about the FNIT pics - off to check it out:)

Hi Paul,

Happy Birthday to your mom. I saw Wall-E this weekend too, and I know why you're singing. A great movie. :)

Hi TL! I was thinking about you and it seemed only natural to bring in the beautiful game. Very nice of Jake to dust off Joe Namath for the occasion. How's your head this morning!!

What! Leonard Cohen wouldn't let it be recorded? That explains why I couldn't find it anywhere. What an odd attitude... I did enjoy Verve last night and Mark Ronson was just great.

I know nothing about American football either but I do fancy seeing Jake as a sporting hero and this Joe looks like a man with a lifetime of strange happenings which could be fun in a film and have wider appeal.

Morning Bertie! I must check this film out, I've not heard of it. So when is Mamma Mia coming out? I can't wait to see that one, talking of films with songs.

Have a wonderful day everyone - even if it's Monday. Hot and sunny one for the tennis (come on Andy Murray!!)

Hi WDW and a happy Monday to everyone! Just diving in for a quick catch up because I'm due at work in less than an hour :-(

So glad for Spain (and particularly for TL) that they won Euro 2008! I like your thinking about England and the next World Cup TL - stranger things have happened ;-)

I've never "got" American grid-iron football either (Some people call it Rugby for wimps, but I couldn't possibly comment ;-) :-D!) However I would love to see Jake playing "Broadway Joe" and you never know,if Jake's international profile is considerably raised by "PoP",surely one of the main reasons for taking the role, then maybe his presence in the lead role will be enough to guarantee plenty of interest and a general release in Blighty?

Thanks for including what I call Jake's "Messiah" pic in this post, WDW - zoom in on his face as he sets up to shoot in the basketball picture and I think you'll see what I mean. As you know, I prefer clean-shaven Jake, but I love that photograph!

And I love Christian Bale for his tributes to and obvious love for Heath. In fact he deserves a big kiss - Mwwwwwwwwwaaaaaahh!!

I wouldn't worry about American football being a stumbling block for viewers of the Joe Namath movie. Any Hollywood studio that would pump a hundred million dollars into a movie that could only be appreciated by people who understand football would soon be bankrupt. Relax. Hollywood dumbs things down so the largest possible dmeographic will get the point...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Nadine! That's some smacker on the chops for Christian :D That is such a gorgeous picture of Jake, making his aim. I do like that beard. I seem to be one of those who wishes he'd shave it when he has one and grow one when he hasn't. I think I like that Cannes stubble best of all :D

Hi Paul - I hope you're right about the powers that be wanting to give this film as much appeal as possible. But it is also possible that foreign audiences won't get a look in nor that they themselves will give it much of a thought.

We just don't tend to watch any of these sports movies over here - even less so when they're dumbed down. Mind you, don't half love Escape to Victory! It will be interesting to learn how much of the Joe Namath movie takes place off the pitch (or whatever they call it).

Obviously I'd watch anything with Jake in it and because of that will feel that in some way it is aimed at me :D

Talking of sport - time to watch some tennis...
