As Brokies from across the globe arrive in Oxford for a celebratory weekend, it seems therefore rather appropriate that a possible sighting on IHJ has Jake Gyllenhaal himself arriving in London for the weekend - just a short hop and skip from the dreamy spires.
So, as I can never resist just the thought of Jake being in London, in Britain or in Europe, I thought I'd reflect on Jake in the Big Smoke. Whether queuing for cash, eating at a pavement cafe, cycling in the face of city traffic, doing award-winning theatre or collecting an award, Jake seems to manage to both fit in and stand out. During Jake's stay in London for This Is Our Youth, Jake got to know the town very well:
'While in London, he has been struck by the collegiate nature of stage acting culture: "There's definitely a respect for growth and potential, rather than the feeling of having to have it all at once." Hollywood's money-driven star system, he thinks, exerts a stunting effect on film acting there: "I can see why American actors like to come here and do theatre." In his spare time, he has seen several theatre matinees, and explored Notting Hill and Hampstead Heath on foot - an odd sensation for an LA native: "It's weird, using your legs for anything but pushing a gas pedal."'

And Jake, to boot! What a hoot!

Morning Pia! It is so exciting to have so many Brokies, Jake fans, Heath fans arrive in my home town - just can't believe it :D And I like to think of Jake being in the neighbourhood - even if he isn't! I wish very much you were here too, Pia, I'll email you pics :D
oh... I haven't seen that Jake at the cash-point photo! :P
I agree! I love the idea of Jake being somewhere close by! And on the weekend of our gathering too! that would make some great topics for our Jaking/Heathen lunch :)
Hi Winterbird :D I love the cashpoint pics :) I wonder if Ruby remembered to invit Jake to the lunch... Andit looks like the weather's not going to be too bad after all - obviously it's Winbledon next week, so the rain'll be saving itself for that :)
Yay for Brokies getting together and for Jake being in London at the same time!!! :D
Enjoy your Friday everyone!
Hi WDW,
Not much is lovelier than walking around in London! How exciting that Jake is there - must be for PoP filming? Have a great time Brokies and Brits! :)
Good to see you, Get Real! I hope you have a lovely Friday too :D Can you just pop over too?...
Hi Bertie! Posting at the same time :D If Jake is over here one has to think that it's something to do with PoP pre-production. But I do hope Jake also has time to pop over to Oxford and let 60 Brokies each buy him a pint :D
But I do hope Jake also has time to pop over to Oxford and let 60 Brokies each buy him a pint :D
That would be awesome, wouldn't it? :) Have fun, and I'll hope you all get to see him!! You never know, you and Oxford seem to be star magnets! ;)
It's quite a thought, isn't it Bertie?! Jake would love it. Maybe he's taken Peter's advice to come to Oxford, have a look round the historic bits and come and see us :D After seeing Peter here so unexpectedly like that, I'm inclined to expect the unexpected...! Have a good Friday :)
WDW, I so wish I could join you. Hopefully next time! I know you guys will have a blast...and I expect to see pics! ;)
Alright all you guys you to will Jake to take a trip to Oxford while he is over there. :D
Hope the weather stays clear for the weekend.
Oh I'm so happy that you and other lucky Brokies are getting together this week-end, I wish I could be with you all and I surely will actually, in spirit! :)
Let's hope Jake reads his fan-blogs after all and decided to drop by!:D
Have a great day and week-end y'all!
Summer solstice at about eight p.m. EST, and I guess in the first wee hour after midnight in Oxford -
midsummer madness, sure enuff . . .
Hello, Wet Dark!
Wow! I hope you can find is with Jake !!!!!!!
OMG! I would be in London at that time!
Hey WDW and all Brokies,Jake-fans and Heathens gathering in Oxford. I'm so envious of you all getting to meet up and have fun with kindred spirits!
How many people are you expecting WDW? You'll be having a screening of "Brokeback" surely? It must be so wonderful/even more poignant to watch the best film ever with lots of fellow devotees! Maybe one day...
Love the pics of Jake in London and the great Telegraph article from 2002 - so much has happened in Jake-world since then, most of it good. I'm taking those "Jake is in London now" rumours with a pinch of salt,as lovely as the thought might be that he's here at the same time as the Oxford bash. Call me an old cynic, but methinks a little mischief-making might be going on there - it would be good to be wrong and discover that he is,indeed,in good old Blighty.
Please,WDW,give my love to all the folks at the gathering - hope you all have a fabulous weekend!
Wow, how's that for coincidence? Jake being in London at the same time as the Brokie get-together. I hope he's staying longer than he did last time. Even if I don't see him, which is unlikely anyway, as I can't imagine him venturing this far south of the river, I love knowing that he's in the same time zone:D
Hope you all have a brilliant time at the BBM gathering. I wish I could be there too, but I'll be there in spirit:)
I've just read the post on IHJ which is by a bloke who was describing being on the same flight as Jake in a fairly detailed fashion, so maybe my cynicism was misplaced for once and the divine Mr.G really is in England's green and pleasant land - or at least, in the Big Smoke?
Perhaps he read about the Brokie gathering and he's on his way to Oxford to surprise you all as we speak ;-) If only,eh?
Don't even tease us like that Nadine - how great would that be? Hi, there. Just popping in to say hope everyone has a great weekend. Looking forward to some guilt-free Jaking. Pia, TL, Get Real, Bertie, Nadine etc... (I knew I shouldn't have started to name names....) I wish all you wonderful guys and gals of Wet Dark and Wild, could be there, seriously. If your ears start burning, you'll know we're sending lots of warm fuzzies your way xx
thanks Sheba, we'll look forward to warm fuzzies and also fizzies - in the meantime, for consolation, maybe, we've got a video interview of Peter Sarsgaard who's cover boy on the NYTimes Sunday on-line Web magazine.
looking forward to pictures and commentaries - solstice tonite, everybody gets to run around nekkid.
where is Donnie Darko?
Poor Jake, I hope he has his cashmere scarf with him, after all it is midsummer's day tomorrow :(
What a great image, Jake visiting Oxford on Peter's recommendation and encountering the Brokies en masse ... :D :D
Anouska, would absolutely love that but no idea of how I'd react after wanting to meet him for so long. Only hope I'd be as cool as the guy on the VA flight ;D
"looking forward to pictures and commentaries - solstice tonite, everybody gets to run around nekkid."
nekkid?!! No-one mentioned that! Oh well, when in Rome.... or Oxford..... ;DD
Love Peter... he's so rad (*major cheese*). I love his cool, his impassive expressions and you just don't know what he's capable of. I watched one of his movies on youtube about him being a writer (can't remember it now, begins with a D I think) it was so good.
Right... off to bed, got a major headache so need to be fighting fit for the morning. Nighty night :D
Hi everybody! So good to see you all - it's been an amazing evening spending time with some very familiar faces and names. We did a ghost walk around Oxford and all the time I couldn't believe that people I've met through BBM were walking through the streets of my town. A great bunch of people, full of humour and soul, and a credit to this marvellous film. I did talk about Jake quite a bit...
Hi Get Real! I'll email you pics :D
Ola Monica - great to know Jake is in town :)
Hi there Nadine - I'm inclined to believe this sighting - it's very detailed and it sounds like Jake. I think over the whole weekend there's about 60 people - most have arrived but some coming tomorrow - like Winterbird and Sheba :D We're having a big Jake and Heath lunch tomorrow and then on Sunday vening there's a screening of BBM in a very atmospheric old theatre - I can't wait!
Hi TL - I so wish you could be here this weekend, as you know, so I'm looking forward to seeing TDK with you. I love being in the same timezone as Jake too - it's a rare and special feeling :D
Hey there Sheba - sorry about your headache. Hope it's gone tomorrow - I can't wait to see you.
Hi Pia - I've been thinking about Peter quite a bit today because I've been walking round the parts of town where I saw him and remembering. Thanks for letting me know about this video interview. I must see that.
A really happy summer solstice to you - this is an important night for me, more so this year because I've spent it in such company.
Hey Nouskie - I love that London scarf and I hope the sun stays out for Jake in London. I love that he's here for the solstice.
Have a good night everyone as the solstice approaches here and it's great to see you all :)
I've set my alarm and done my packing :)
Glad to hear you have a great time tonight, WDW. And look forward to seeing you tomorrow, and Sheba.
Anouska, are you coming too? We need Goose fans! :P
mmm... and the thought that Jake is sleeping/partying/reading/bathing(?) somewhere in central London... mmmmm....
Can't wait for the lunch tomorrow! And I hope Sunday we can get some good weather and sip PIMM's and see others punt :)
I am armed with an army of slashers tomorrow... as someone said, "Oxford will never be the same again" after this weekend... lol.
Hi WDW...Have fun and say hi to everyone:)
xoxoxo
sass
Good morning everyone! Chucking it down with rain but I think it'll pass.
Hi Winterbird - looking forward to seeing you - have you packed Jake? That sounds like a good idea about the Pimms and watching the punters...
Morning Sass! I will say hi to everyone :D
Have a wonderful Saturday everyone!
winterbird, you bet ;)
Morning Nouskie - Can't wait to see you :D Can you bring some sunshine....
Oh, good, the topic is "Brokeback Mountain" again, so I can link the movies I saw this weekend to that film.
Friday I saw "Get Smart," in which Anne Hathaway played Agent 99 (originated by Barbara Feldman in the 1960's-era TV show). Anne really kicked butt. She played the role differently than Barbara did, but she made it her own, and she connected well with Steve Carell's Maxwell Smart. There are some who would argue that this movie should never have been made, as most movie versions of classic TV shows are absolutely bottom-of-the-barrel horrendous. Okay, this may not have been on the level of "Citizen Kane" or "Gone with the Wind." but it was very enjoyable, with some breathtaking action sequences. Carell comes closer to Don Adams's Maxwell Smart than anyone else on the planet could have.
The other movie was "The Love Guru," in which Justin Timberlake plays a hockey player who steals the wife of a key player from a competing team. Timberlake, you may recall, patted Jake on the butt when Jake came to the MTV Awards to pick up a tropht for "best kiss" in a scene from "Brokeback Mountain." "Love Guru" is bottom-of-the-barrel horrendous. I wish I had known. :-(
