Maggie on Jake - 'I look at him in awe' - and the Joker, a 'sexy type of villain'

As Maggie Gyllenhaal does the junkets for The Dark Knight, she's been talking about some of my favourite men. Despite her usual reticence to talk about her younger brother Jake, which is hardly surprising considering that the focus in such interviews should be on her, the star of the film in question, here she has this to say about that evergreen topic of sibling rivalry:

"I was the one who first wanted to act, but I stayed in school while he made a career happen. I look at him in awe. There is no jealousy or competitiveness. We help each other and say, 'Yeah, I'd go and do that project,' or, 'You were really good in that film.'" And, she insists, little brother is great at raking over their childhood. Maggie said: "As you get older and start to look at things that are 'broken' about your parents - everybody's parents have those things - it's nice to have someone else to ask, 'Am I crazy?' or, 'Was this crazy?' "Jake is very good at figuring that stuff out."'

One can hardly blame Maggie for not wanting to discuss Jake in interviews about her acting career, but one can also understand the thinking behind the fascination of journalists and critics in this charismatic and extremely attractive and beguiling brother and sister. This double edge is clear in an interesting feature in the Independent about UK TV presenter June Sarpong, who discusses her experience of interviewing celebrities: 'The actress Maggie Gyllenhaal was a tougher nut. "I was her last interview of the day on a press junket for Sherrybaby. Maggie is not the most talkative person and she doesn't enjoy things like that. Someone like George Clooney really enjoys the process. Will Smith is like that, and Tom Cruise. They are such big stars for a good reason.'

'"But Maggie is all about acting and the art and doesn't really want to be famous anyway. I also asked her about her brother Jake and she didn't like that at all. So I sat there thinking, 'Oh dear, what am I going to do?' And then, I just sort of stopped the interview and said, 'I totally understand that you don't like this process – I get it. But this film is not something the average British cinema-goer would probably go and see. But it's so good and your performance is so amazing that I want people to go and see it. And I want this interview to be the thing that gets people to go and see it because your film will really make people think.' And she said, 'Yeah, actually. You're right.' Then we laughed and talked about babies because she'd just had one and she perked up."'

Also in this interview, Maggie shows that she too finds that Heath Ledger has turned the Joker into a new and extraordinary, even sexy, type of villain: 'What Heath did is take somebody who seems to be all evil and show glimmers of something kind, sexy, open and hurt in him. That allows people in the audience to have compassion for something that they originally saw as evil. It's incredible to be around - and that's what it was like with him.' But it is still hard for Maggie to talk about Heath himself.

Maggie is on the cover of the August issue of the UK's Tatler and this time she spoke about Peter: '"I hate it when Peter does a love scene... He's very understanding – it doesn't seem to bother him [when I do one]." She'd like to keep it that way. "I'd hate it [if he was doing it]," she says. "I'd put up with it, I'd understand, but I wouldn't like it."' On this, I think we will have to disagree... Although in no hurry, Peter and Maggie are also planning a wedding and it's going to be big: '"We don't want to just go to City Hall. I want the fairy tale ... and I've had many different incarnations of my fantasy wedding dress."

On location and Off topic

Yesterday, I stumbled across filming for the very popular UK drama series Lewis, the successor to Inspector Morse. So, even though this is hugely off topic (although I'm sure Jake's extended stay in England will make him keen to watch - the drama does provide a good guide to Oxford's pubs after all), here are a couple of pictures of actors Kevin Whateley, also seen in The English Patient, as Inspector Lewis and Laurence Fox as Sgt Hathaway (ooh, that could be a link...). The filming took place at Univ College in Oxford's High Street, earlier they were in The King's Arms.

Further pictures of the hood

And talking of playing detective, these extra pictures from Wet Monday reveal that Jake has exactly the same phone as me. However, it is possible that his does not have the same Jake Gyllenhaal wallpaper as mine. Today has been an appallingly wet day across southern England and so, I fear, there will be more hoods. But at least the hair should grow quicker in the rain. Some warm sunshine tomorrow should also speed the process.

You didn't feel the urge to get your picture taken with Kevin then? :D

It must be tough for Maggie and Christian doing publicity for TDK. It's so wrong that someone so important is missing from it all.

Not sure about that Tatler cover - Maggie looks a bit Jokeresque herself there - very bad make-up. She looks gorgeous in the other pics though. Glossy mags have a way of making people look very odd. : /

Oh even more hooded Jake and Reese pics. I read today they were making out by the toilets in a restaurant. Naughty if true.

Sucks that Heath isn't there to promote TDK with his colleagues. :(

Who wants to talk about other family members in an interview for movie promotion? But I suppose people like June had to give it a shot to see if Maggie would answer.

I agree with Ruby... that Tatler cover is strange.. the eyeliners aren't very flattering.

Heath seems to be the focus of all the TDK related interviews. Actually, when I watched the trailer in theatre, it's not so much seeing him on screen, it's his voice that got me all teary. Still, looking forward to it.

Very fascinating post, WDW, and I can't wait to see TDK. I love the approach Maggie's interviewer took in getting her to feel comfortable talking about the film as well.

Love, love, love the close up hoodie pics of Jake, looking more and more like the intensely expressioned Prince. :)

Warning: hot muggy weather making me grumpy. sorry WDW

Enuff already of angry Jake, I hate these pictures.

Some of Maggie's interview sounds like recycled stuff.

I dont believe a word of anything from mags they're all slags, Im fed up, truly, with gossip.

Love both Maggie and Jake. Cant imagine not loving them.

Good evening everyone :D

Hi Ruby Rubes :D I was very tempted to pinch some Lewis set coffee :) I'm hoping I may be glimpsed as an extra in this scene.

I agree about the Tatler cover, simply awful, even demonic. Jake's covers are just wonderful, but photographers can mess with actresses too much with the hair and makeup etc.

Hi Sandy! I reckon there's always someone willing to tell the gutter press something :D This is a Mayfair restaurant after all! Jake was probably helping Reese on with that lovely coat of hers.

It really, really does suck that Heath isn't there to help promote his film.

Hey Winterbird :D I've still not seen the trailer but hoping to see Mamma Mia this weekend, maybe then. I agree about who would want to talk about their relatives during interviews for a new movie. But yes worth a shot as Jake is so fascinating :)

Thanks Anon :D I love the close up pics too - so intense and just very beautiful. I liked the interviewer's tactic too. It must be very difficult getting stars to relax and be different in your few moments with them.

Hi ((((Pia)))) - posting at the same time. You can be grumpy *) The gossip in the papers is pure nonsense and an insult to everyone and I can't understand why anyone would believe a word of it. I hope the muggy weather breaks soon :)

Wow, WDW, sure are a lot of exciting things going on in Oxford. That would be great if you were an extra. Have to say I love Reese's coat in the pics too. :)

Snerk. This wit is why I love reading your blog. That and the wonderful scope of info you bring to us!

The Maggie cover gave me chills and immediately made me think Joker too -- me thinks that must have been intentional, though ill-advised.

It's certainly going to be a very hard few weeks, with TDK opening and no Heath to support it. Got my Tix though - 10 days and counting!

Hey 20:08 - love to have a name for you btw :D There is always so much filming going on here - one of these days Jake will have to film here too (in my dreams!). I do like the coat.

Hey Sun Pony Monica! so good to see you and thank you for finding it witty - *blush*. Interesting thought that the cover may have been Jokeresque on purpose. Yes, disturbing and I'm not sure I like that idea. Three weeks here. Thanks for commenting :D

Relax WDW,I'm not in scary mode tonight ;-) I know I went off on one yesterday and gave Jake a bit of a lecture courtesy of your blog (I'm sure he was hanging on my every word ;-) ).

Perhaps I can explain myself a little. You must know what it's like to love someone, really care about what happens to them, and you see them doing stuff which seems out of character and inadvisable and which seems to be making them anything but happy? You see them getting into situations which they should, indeed could, easily avoid but they just go blundering on in and get enmeshed in them anyway ,and you feel depressed about it but powerless to stop it.

Well that's why I lost my rag about those photos, amongst other things, yesterday. In the past I have railed against intrusive, aggressive Pappery but I was just beyond frustrated that Jake had put himself knowingly into that kind of situation only to end up looking bloody wretched and as miserable as sin! Pia's right, those photos are horrible :-( Am I making any sense? Probably not ;-)

Talking of horrible photos, that Tatler cover doesn't do Maggie any favours at all,the Jokeresque schlap and harsh lighting are really unflattering. She looks so much prettier when her natural self is allowed to shine through.

And as for the Joker,it makes me glow with pride but ache at the injustice of Heath's passing now that so much of the TDK promotion is a tribute to his talent and personal charisma. As July 25th approaches I'm high on anticipation and filled with trepidation in equal measure. "Kind, sexy, open and hurt" Maggie says of the Joker...poignant that this description could fittingly be applied to Heath too,God rest his soul :-( xx

Hi Nadine :D The way I look at it is that Jake lives his own life and some of the time he just doesn't listen to us and he does things we don't like, like many we love. But I do try not to judge as I don't have access to his head or heart unfortunately and I can't live his life for him :) I make no sense either!

As for the photos I still only see someone walking from a restaurant to a car not enjoying being papped. But we certainly agree on the thing that matters - we love Jake and want the best for him :D

Those are wonderful words about Heath - his loss feels great.

G'night and love to all

Lovely post. How heartbreaking that they must carry on without Heath. For all of us as well.

Morning everyone! And hopefully I won't need the snorkel and flippers today becaue the rain has actually stopped.

And good morning Anon - thanks for the comment :D It really is heartbreaking. Heath is such a huge part of the whole TDK experience and I do like that.

Morning WDW, thanks for another precious post! :)

What I keep on seeing in those pap pics is Jake trying to make it to get into his car with a lot of flashes blinding him, thing that, famous or not, tends to be pretty annoying IMO, and all happening in one handful of seconds, so I try not to overanalize them.:)

I love Maggie's private attitude towards the business and I appreciate the caring knowing respectful way she (and everybody involved in the movie) talks about Heath, I think she's trying to make a tribute to the wonderful performance Heath gave as an actor without being too indiscrete towards the man.
Can't wait to see the movie, and the apectacular iconic Heath's Joker. And I miss Heath already. :(

Have a great WDW and everyone!

Hi there Xenia! Hope you're having a great day - I like Maggie's attitude too.

Thanks so much for the links to those interviews, WDW! I'm glad that Maggie mentions how hard it still is for her and Jake to talk about Heath. It can take months or even years to get over the shock of a death like that, and it probably isn't helpful when you have media people assuming that your reticence to talk is a sign of indifference. It's hard enough to lose someone when you're not a celebrity. :-(

Maggie is a very distinctive person to me, because she looks great in very simple, casual clothes. To me, that's what real beauty is. A good figure, a pretty face, peaches-and-cream complexion.

But that's not to say that she won't look fabulous in a posh wedding gown. I can udnerstand if she and Peter don't want media intrusion on her big wedding day, but I'm dying to see pictures of it...:-)

One more thought about Maggie: I'm not concerned about the "Tatler" cover where she looks less than glamorous. As Charlize Theron ("Monster") and Emma Thompson ("Nanny McPhee") have shown, there can be a very large upside to playing a downright ugly character, even a mean, vicious one. Another example: Meryl Streep in "Manchurian Candidate," or Glenn Close as Cruella De Ville
