Ted and Lisa's Excellent Adventure - A day with Jake Gyllenhaal

No doubt many of us remember the ACLU auction last year - well, now we reap the rewards. At the end of April, two special people had the opportunity to spend a day with Jake Gyllenhaal, hairpiece and all, on the set of Nailed in Columbia - Ted and Lisa. Ted had the dubious pleasure of watching Brokeback Mountain next to me in Oxford, and no doubt suffered bruises from being gripped by me through every emotional scene - and this is a movie with a lot of emotional scenes. I'll never forget it. Through him, and all through Jake, I have had the chance to get to know another friend, Lisa.

I was just thrilled this evening when Lisa sent me the photos of herself, Ted and Jake from their day, along with a link to their Excellent Adventure. You have to leave a comment to be befriended and then you can read all 70-odd pages of the encounter. I'm now reading it myself and will be back to discuss - Good job I have the day off tomorrow!

The pictures belong to Ted and Lisa and are reproduced with their permission. Ted, you make Jake look short!

Thanks so much for the heads up on this WDW:) I was about to go to bed when I realised I hadn't switched the computer off properly, so glad I decided to check back instead of just turning it off.
Looking forward to reading it all properly in the morning. Love the pics btw, thanks to Ted and Lisa for sharing:)

good that I was already on Ted's flist! Thanks for the heads up... I shall be busy tomorrow at the office :P

I forgot how tall Ted is! He managed to make Jake looks so boyish (well, the clueless congressman look helps too) :P

Great! Been waiting for this. Thanks WDW for the heads up and to Ted and Lisa for what will be an Ovaltine and cocoanut biscuits moment for me (ie. very interesting read). Why yes, Ted sure does make Jake look short, however, when he bear-hugged me I only came up to his shoulder so he's got to be about 3-4 inches taller than Jake. Off to sort out this 'friend' business :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Winterbird! Ted is so tall, I felt like a munchkin next to him! I need to have Jake standing next to me for comparison...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Good to see you Sheba! Enjoy the read - and the ovaltine :D

Yay WDW looks like you got a "scoop" - well, congrats to Ted and Lisa, also, who handled themselves with great elan during the time with Jake, and also to Jake for being Jake, kind, accessible, professional, etcetc.

But I did enjoy your "scoop" as I think you are the first of the press and established Jake blogs to assure us what we assumed, that Jake attended LA memorial service for Heath. "Of course."

Hope this is not an untoward comment, but there's been alot of uncomfortable gossip around this and I think it's helpful to have it said.

Wonder if Jake got his striped shirt in Paris, and the hat. I do like the look!

My, Ted's a big guy!

Thanks for posting this tonight, WDW, many were waiting with bated breath. . .

good sleepin' everybody.

p.s. o I guess Ted and Lisa alerted other sites, so its not exactly true that you got a scoop, exactly, wdw - but it felt like it, and was an occasion.

as an one time reporter, I love "scoops" -

I always thought he went to the first L.A. memorial. I think I read somewhere he and Russell Crowe (sp?) attended. Good we have confirmation. Thanks.

Thank God I don't have work in the morning. I feel like I've read an entire novel - what an amazing adventure, I'm humbled by it. The words 'thank you' don't do my appreciation justice ;D

all I can say is wow!!! the part that made me laugh the most was when Jake said his shirt is from target too and she was worried about her 9.99 shirt from Target haha..I loved the pictures..I can point out all the locations! I'm glad I found out about Jake's hairpiece..I bet thats what took him so long to get out of the trailer that first night I met him. wow that was great!!

Good morning everyone! What a night - huge emotion all round. I've read it quickly and now will read it again, properly and slowly.

Morning Pia! I think the whole affair was carried off with so much mutual respect and grace and so huge credit to Ted, Lisa and Jake and also Emily.

I was hugely delighted to hear confirmation that Jake did go to the LA memorial. I always thought he had but so good to hear it and I think it's the kind of thing we all want to hear and to know. And to see just a little, a glimpse of Jake's emotion.

I am so proud because this does feel like a scoop - this is entirely due to a good friendship with Ted and, through him, with Lisa too. I am so please Lisa sent me the pictures and wanted to include WDW and everyone here, where she is a lurker!

*Waves to Lisa*!

Ted is a big guy and he appreciates good beer :D

Hi Sandy! I think it was the first one too.

Morning Sheba :D I'm very glad to have the day off too. I feel quite drained really and didn't sleep much last night. Mamma Mia later on might help :)

Hi Nicole! I loved all those set pictures too. It's funny thinking that's your town - I can see you on those steps :) The hair piece and the goo sounds revolting...

Hope everyone's having a good day!

Aaaaargh! Hi WDW!Couldn't stay up to respond to the heads up you gave us on Ted and Lisa's fabulous day last night and I've had one of those mornings where mundane irritations have eaten up the time :-(

Off to work soon and might have a busy evening so I could have to wait until tomorrow before I can read Ted and Lisa's journal properly! So frustrating!

Thanks so much, however, for underlining that Jake himself confirmed he attended the LA memorial for Heath. It's what I suspected but it's so good to know it for sure. Back as soon as I can when RL loosens its grip!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Nadine! I've spent all morning re-reading closely the account and it's so full of gems to add to the treasurechest - All kudos to Lisa for the hair stroking :D And full of heart.

I missed this last night, which is probably a good thing as I would have stayed up all night reading it!

I have now caught up though. What a wonderful, detailed account from Ted and Lisa. I need to re-read it but I guess I should really do some of what I'm paid for now!!

Anonymous said...

This is great, I haven't read it yet, but will ask to be friended. I feel so embarrassed; I should have known Jake would have attended Heath's memorial service. I don't know why I got so caught up in something that wasn't my business, I guess I felt so badly after Heath died. I don't know why it meant so much to me to have "Jack" there, but it did. Poor Jake, my apologies. Thanks WDW. :)

Zodiac said...

I've just read the whole story. It's great, I loved the story behind his picture with Heath. Ah,the emotions...I'll have to read it again.

Anonymous said...

I never doubted that Jake was there at services for Heath. Never. I never doubted their friendship or their affection for one another.

I have always thought that it was mean and hateful, and so very presumptuous and judgemental of anyone to just assume to know things, and demand proofs from the media, or mostly, from Jake himself! To feel the need to ask such a personal question? It just boggles!

An enormous tragedy occurs. Enormous. And suddenly how people feel about Jake becomes the center of it! Thank you for apologizing anon, 12:51. Poor Jake indeed! Jake is a good person. The account was wonderful, WDW. Thanks so much for it.

It confirmed for me that Jake is a good and decent man. I'd be more then honored to call him a friend. He is obviously very deeply affected by all this. And clearly, he is more then passing familiar with the internet.

(I truly hope you don't construe this as a negative comment, WDW. I just take great umbrage with anything that directly, or even inadvertently causes or adds to Jake's pain.

I don't think he has a mean bone in his beautiful body. In fact, as beautiful as he is outside, I think he is even moreso inside. It's been extrememely difficult to see him be the focus of so much malice and negativity.)

Anonymous said...

It's a great comment, I always knew he was a good person as well a good and decent man. I hate getting all caught up in this landslide of negativity. I won't let it happen again. :)

Wow, thank you so much WDW for letting us know about Ted and Lisa's write up on their experience meeting Jake.

Needless to say I was blown away at how wonderful it all was. I am so happy for them that despite some annoyances with their travel they had such an amazing time meeting Jake! I was so overjoyed to read how gracious, kind, considerate and open Jake was with them. I was not surprised but it confirms my feelings about him and what a special human being he is. I am so glad it was cleared up that he went to Heath's memorial. I was disgusted and angered at the negativity some hurled at him when they didn't even know the real story. The fact that he talked of Heath in the present tense makes me feel that he holds their friendship and Heath in the utmost respect and with privacy. I do thank Ted and Lisa for asking the question with such care and respect. They seem so great. Wonderful, wonderful recap! Made my day! :D

And have to say YUM to the way Jake looked in the Paris pics. He was working the French look but put his own spin on it. ;p

Have a good day all

I read half of this last night and have just finished reading the rest, and I'm pretty much speechless atm. What a wonderful read, and it sounds like Jake went way beyond the call of duty in giving so much time to Ted and Lisa, and making them feel comfortable in his presence, and of course in answering their questions. Reading his comments about BBM and Heath gave me goosebumps. Thanks again WDW, Ted and Lisa :)

Ruby said...

hello Anonses. :) it would be nice to have names.:)

I never doubted that Jake lost a much loved friend back in January. Grief is a very personal thing and not something anyone should be publicly judged on, imo.
All credit to Lisa and Ted that Jake felt comfortable talking to them about Heath.

I'm starting to get nervous about TDK now. I could feel myself tearing up when the trailer came on tv the other night. Fortunately, I have a very understanding husband who will take good care of me if I sob through the credits (which is likely)

Anonymous said...

Like TL... i am rather speechless atm. I practically got all teary during lunch time at the office when I read the "Heath in present tense" part.

And what a detailed, funny and emotional account they have given us. I've been leaving comments there as I read, what an amazing journey.

It's comforting to hear about Jake talking about Heath. No doubt some people will continue to believe whatever they want to believe about this issue, but that is those people's problem, not Jake's.

I'd say the Jake we read about in this encounter is very consistent with what we've heard about him. If that is fake, I'd say Jake is living the hardest life, you can't pretend to be this kind and compassionate all the time.

Anonymous said...

Me too, Ruby. I'll have a little trepidation going in, but I'm thrilled to see TDK as well, so mixed feelings. My OH will see me through too. I'm bringing tissues just in case, though. :)

Ruby said...

I know what you mean TL and Get real. (about the speechlessness) I'll read a second time ( more slowly and less furtively!) before I comment on anything specific. Except to say 'hah knew it had to be a hair piece' :D

bk, mixed feelings for sure. But he's going to be amazing. :)

Again TY WDW, I am x-posting here but I have no choice...I am not well this am... I feel this way and can in no way frame it differntly for each of my favorite blogs.

My feeling the morning after one of my most emotional readings of what happened to all of us in January is one of near total emotional devastation. Right now, I free raw and exposed, sad and teary.
I can't get Jake's intimate and very painful discourse about his friend out of my mind.
I laughed so hard at their adventures getting to the film site and I cried for hours during and after reading it.
I was glad they shared with us. I felt Jake's pain as would anyone who has lost someone they love.
That he speaks of his loss as if it's not happened breaks my heart; I had to take some time off after reading that section and pray for Jake and Heath to have peace.
I feel silly writing about my discomfort; I didn't know Heath intimately, I wasn't his best friend and I am not godfather to his daughter...but that is how it is.

Anonymous said...

On Gyllenbabble some speculate that the Heath part of the conversation is made up. I hope not!

Ruby said...

I'm clearly discombobulated - it was Winterbird who also said she was speechless not Get Real. Well you are only separated by an ocean and have totally different names, it's an easy mistake to make! :D

Anonymous said...

This is just a guess, but it may be that Jake's speaking of Heath in present tense is an indication of his "faith stance". I often speak of the dead in present tense because their presence is continued to be felt in my life.

Just sayin'

Hi there my friends! Thanks so much for all these great comments - I've been out Mamma Mia-ing. So great to come back to all this warmth for our guy :D

First off, must urgently address the anon comment at 16:26 - I feel very strongly about this and I had no idea such talk was going on - thank you for alerting me to it, anon.

Other sites can speculate all they want but they can keep it to themselves. Ted is a very good and loved friend of mine and he does NOT make things up. Through him I have come to know Lisa and she too has spoken in emails to me privately about what that moment was like when Jake spoke about Heath. Such doubts belong on other blogs, not this one, thank heavens!

I'm very touched by other anon comments here too - this is such an emotive issue for many of us and it is wonderful to hear people say they want to turn their back on the negativity. I always believed Jake had been there but I know others needed more than that. But I think Jake's depth of feeling is apparent and painful and I think it is shared with all of us. And I also think he knows that.

I re-read the account this morning and I agree with Winterbird that all the Jake I found there was the one I've followed for several years - nothing inconsistent but demonstrating yet again why he won me over and no other actor has.

So big hugs to everyone - to Rubes, Winterbird, TL, Get Real, Sass, BK and all the anons whose names I'd love to know. Big thanks to Ted and Lisa and Jake xxx

It was one poster on Gyllenbabble WDW, so please do not imply that your blog is better than other ones, thank you. Oh and I thought the epiloque part re Jakes sexuality was totally uncalled for.

Anonymous said...

And it was an anon poster.

Anonymous said...

It was a couple of posters who insinuated it was fake! I agree, it doesn't belong here. WDW thanks for reassuring us. :)

Ruby said...

hugs back WDW. Thanks for that comment. People are free to believe what they want. Personally, I wouldn't question Ted's integrity on this for a second. I am so glad he and Lisa got to spend this time with Jake and are being so generous in sharing it with us all.

Gotta go to Sainsbury's now :( See you later. xx

Hi Pia - posting at the same time!

All this is hard to take as a close relative of Mr WDW died last night and it kind of kicks you in the teeth and so this all feels pertinent but so sad.

On a lighter note. Like the anon said earlier - love the Jewish Dating Agency comment!!

Hi Vicky :)

Agreed, Ruby! I'm gona be singing Mamma Mia songs all evening....

Hi Anon - that's in the next post!

(((WDW))) So sorry for your and Mr. WDW's loss.

I see no reason for any drama to be created by this report...end of, imo.

OMG I laughed so hard when Jake mentioned J-Date! It is very popular and well known with Jewish singles. He is so cute. :D

Hope you enjoyed Mamma Mia. Can't wait to see it along with TDK which I will be seeing Friday!

Hi WDW, sorry for your loss especially after having thoughts and feelings of 22nd Jan brought up again. I was going to ask how was Mama Mia. I love Pierce Brosnan in comedic roles. Would you recommend it?

This journal I'm coming to realise is really important. It's the scoop that many a journalist/rag mag/tabloid etc. would have loved to get. Even moreso that Jake refused to speak to the media about it then, makes it that more special.

I believed every word of that amazing meet-up and to be honest, its been on my mind all day. Ted and Lisa described Jake's expressions, manerisms so eloquently that I could imagine him with the solemn look and nodding while they tried to express their own private grief at Heath's passing. They shared that with Jake and he embraced it and opened up to them about his feelings a little.

I especially loved the fact that Lisa's picture of Jake and Heath that she got Jake to sign had a terrific story behind it. I'd love to see that posted here somewhere.

I don't for a minute think he's a saint or should be cannonised - he's just a man that's private and is careful of sharing what he wants to share with whomsoever he wants to share with.

I got to know Jake a little bit better because of Lisa and Ted and I absolutely love him for 'the personal touch' he treated them to. You guys - this is a really big deal. Well done ;D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Get Real *) I can just imagine Jake being sent a link to this dating agency!

I loved Mamma Mia!

Hi Sheba :D I really recommend seeing Mamma Mia - Piers Brosnan's voice took a bit of getting used to but he won me over, as did Meryl although I initially thought she was too old to play the mum - great voice on her!

I feel like I got to know Jake a little better too - great gift, Ted and Lisa xx
