If you're not living on the moon or if you haven't got the internet (which kind of amounts to the same thing), it may have escaped your notice that Jake Gyllenhaal is everywhere on the world wide web today. Jake caught the attention of many by walking across that film set with his three belts and his topless chest - maybe it was the necklace... Anyway, it seems that much of the attention was because some commentators, who seem to recall nothing later than Donnie Darko, simply could not believe that Jake could buff up in such a jaw dropping kind of way.
I was going to post some pictures charting the changing shape of Jake's figure, but instead Sky Showbiz have done it for me. And so here is their look at the 43 shapes of Jake Gyllenhaal. Although they have some of the dates wrong, the pictures are a treat, especially this one - I have been searching for this photograph for such a long time, so many thanks to them for that.
I don't usually post links to such videos, but I've included this video about Jake and his new look because it features a few seconds of film of Jake walking into St Pancras station in London for the Eurostar train to Paris. I love this look on Jake.
Elegy
Jake's prince, of course, will be battling the evil Vizier played by Sir Ben Kingsley, who has just appeared in Elegy alongside Penelope Cruz and the wonderful Peter Sarsgaard. A few days ago I went to see Elegy and I wanted to mention it here to encourage as many of you that can to see this film before it disappears from the few screens that are showing it. (It was particularly memorable because I was interviewed for local TV about whether popcorn should be banned.) Speaking as someone who approaches the works of Philip Roth with some trepidation and not a little fear, I was surprised to see that Elegy was directed by a woman - Isabel Coixet - and I was fully prepared to dislike everything about the self- and sex-obsessed Kepesh (Kingsley).
But instead, despite some wavering, I found myself inhabiting the mind of an ageing man, scared to death that he would no longer be able to pull his young students, a third of his age. It wasn't a particularly engaging place to inhabit - at times it was extremely uncomfortable and skincreeping - but it did mean that when Kepesh met his match in Consuela and he learned his lesson, I melted with him. Peter was a scene stealer as Kepesh's son, who fitted perfectly into society's moulds, except for one - being transformed into a needy child whenever he sees Kepesh. But Peter is so underused. I must say how good it was to see Deborah Harry on the big screen too.
I wonder if Peter has shared with Jake his experiences of working with this formidable and powerful actor, Ben Kingsley. I suspect so.
Best dressed Maggie
Maggie has always appeared to stay true to her own taste in fashion and clothes, not always getting an easy ride for it, but she recently turned many heads with her series of dramatic and completely appropriate outfits for the Dark Knight premieres and publicity events. Maggie made Grazia's top ten list of best dressed women, alongside the more usual figures of Gwyneth Paltrow, Natalie Portman and Kate Hudson.
Heady days for the Gyllenhaal siblings.
With thanks to T for the video link. Includes pictures from links, Contactmusic and About.com.

mmmm. Thank you Sky Showbiz. And you WDW of course. Can I order by number? I'll take an 8, a 10 and a 12 please. :D
ooh and an 18 and a 19. Always liked those. :D
Ah many thanks for today's goodies.
Your own review of Elegy - and red carpet vid! - looking forward to this film and I see it's going to be released on DVD Jan 1 09 - it didnt show at all, in my neck a the woods.
Nice review of JBG's bod - it was lovely when Jake was flirting with camera and audience, and strutting about on Greenwich Avenue NYC eetcetc - he hasnt done this for awhile, and for me, his body and personal life is now being "marketed" and its not the same, at all.
Hey there Rubes :D I won't fight you for the 10, 12, 18 and 19 but we may have to fight over an 8 Jake. My fave is definitely the classic 34, but I also favour 21 and 29 (and I love the kid's face in the background for 23). Let's here it for 34!!
Thanks Pia :D Ahhh, I love to see Jake strut like that - completely in command and in control - so sexy. I'm sorry to hear Elegy's not around where you are. I was lucky it was on here. Iloved the vid :D
Hope everyone's having a good evening :)
Elegy sounds interesting. I may try and catch it before it leaves theatres here. Thanks for the interviews with the cast, Peter.
Swoon....LOVE the Sky Showbiz walk down Jake's bod memory lane. I love to see him strut too. Pia, I really miss those days of him doing his thing being all flirty walking around on Greenwich Ave. and around NYC. I really wish we would see that again soon... Personally, I have lots of issues with what is put out about him and on the other side what the gossips say because they sure are as much to blame as any PR. They seem to "market" as much of their gossip as his PR may want to market his body and personal life. I wish they would all leave him alone to have some privacy and more focus on his career. JMO dont' mean to offend anyone.
Anyway, back to drooling and loving the Sky pics...
Thanks too for the Maggie info. She sure was a beauty during all the TDK press.
Evening Get Real! I hope you can catch Peter in Elegy, I'm feeling the love after watching Kinsey last night.
I'm not a fan of the gossip or the PR either - seems a strange old business to me and I can't make head not tail of any of it. So, I'll just stick with remembering the 'good old days' wistfully while getting ready for being swept off my feet by Jake's next screen incarnations.
I'm nervous about Jake's role in Brothers. I think it could be something we've not seen before from him - some real edginess (without knowing anything about the plot - I'm just going by the tattoo on his neck and all the snow on the ground).
I love those Sky pics, a real trip down memory lane - what a gorgeous fella our Jake is. And Maggie's not bad either :D
Good to see you get Real! Hope the weather's good over there in NYC - flippin horrible here - wanna swap? Please say yes...
Im watchibg James Sheridan's The Field tonight. I was surprised to read that Jake is considered "lead" in Brothers as it seems to me all three actors have similarly weighted roles.
I think it's a really good role for Jake for reasons (zippy longstocking!) that I am sworn not to disclose.
Hey WDW, you can come over here anytime! :D Although if your weather is bad I don't want to trade places. ;)
The weather has been okay but lots of rain and it is cooling down with that Fall feeling. I am sure we will have Indian summer just in time for my birthday in Sept.. But it does sound better than what you are having. So come on over!
Have never heard of The Field, Pia. I do love My Left Foot and In The Name of the Father so if it is a JM movie it should be worth a look. Hope you enjoy it.
Hi Pia! Always like to hear Jake called the lead, even if he just has two lines and appears in a deeply mysterious and enigmatic cameo. Enjoy The Field - I've not seen that one, and thanks for being a zippy longstocking - one of these days you shall have your rewards :D
Hey Get Real! That sounds good to me and I'm saving the pennies. I'm hoping for some more summer here too but none on its way this week. I love My Left Foot and In The Name of the Father too but I've not seen them for years and years - I've not seen any of Jim's recent films.
"The Field" was about Richard Harris, looking like Dumbledore but acting like King Lear. ;-).
Watch out below!
I don't think "Elegy" is showing anywhere in my area. Sad!
The Field. haha, Paul, "watch out below!" indeed!
A little Irish melodrama, Elisabeth.
Okay, Im all ears for Broadway Joe.
let's get on with it.
I love Maggie's dress for the TDK premiere. And suddenly, I've fallen in love with Dastan's pants! lol I think I was stunned for a couple of days when the pics first came out, but now, I think he looks amazing. The pants and the belt are gorgeous, the color and texture of them, not to mention other things. The way they fit him, and the, er, seam(s). ;) I don't know why it took me awhile, a lot of man, I guess. :)
Good morning everyone! Well, who'd have thought it - it's actually sunny :D
Hi Paul and Pia! What's all this "Watch out below" stuff, eh? I've looked up The Field and I remember it now. I didn't go and see it at the time as it seemed a little... rustic. Also, I've never liked Richard Harris - there, said it!
Hi Anon! I can definitely agree that there is something irresistable about Jake's trousers here - that seam is eyecatching :D Er, a very good fit. I do love the belts and all the accessories. Very clever use of them by the designers :)
Have a great day everyone!
Hello everybody!
Thanks a lot for the Sky link! I could live on #21 and #22... yummy!!
See you later!! :O)
Hi there Sara! I think no 22 Jake is free and available - look after him!
morning, and or afternoon everypeeps.
yes WDW The Field WAS pretty darned rustic :D - don't want to spoil the "watch out below" finale for anyone. giggle giggle giggle.
almost Friday!
Morning/afternoon Pia :D That sounds like a line from Master and Commander... Not quite like Friday enough, unfortunately. Hope you have a good day! (Totally OT but I bought a new cocktail shaker at lunch - back OT Jake is hot...)
I'm feeling a little sheepish about my comments regarding "The Field." ;-)
WDW, I must say that I have disliked Richard Harris's work in a few movies ("Camelot" in particular). However, his granddaughter did the world a favor by telling him she would never speak to him again if he said no to playing Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter movies. And, he was good in "The Field."
Hi Paul! Groan.... ;D You'll be glad to hear I have no sheep jokes in my arsenal to respond with :D
I couldn't stand Richard Harris as Dumbledore - much prefer Michael Gambon (although obviously I would have preferred Gambon not to have inherited it like that...). There must be a film I've liked Richard Harris in but I can't think of one - oh, I can, I thought he was good in Gladiator :D
Now everybody's moved on, and I'm still talking about Dastan's pants! I saw the entire series on IHJ, and there's a couple where the waist and belt is a bit asymmetrical, which is better than straight across, so it doesn't cut our honey in half, lengthening his torso and showing a bit more of those lovely slim hips, and the verical seams highlight his long legs, and he looks gorgeous! Very nice work by the designers, I agree, but look what they have to work with, they can't go wrong! ;)
Hi Anon! Always happy to talk about the Prince's trousers :D I know the pictures you mean and I do think Jake's legs look incredible in them, and his hips... The designers knew just what they were doing... wouldn't have minded being the one with the tape measure :D
Well, according to this picture Jake does look a lot like the Daston from The Warrior Within
Wow - I may pass out if I see him like that. Too powerful for me. He's better looking than that pic too. I like the tatoo? around his biceps - normally I don't like tatts but occasionally, they can be very attractive and artistic. I can't wait to see them in Brothers too. ;)
Im afraid I cant get too excited about the costume or what's in it realizing it's 104 degrees F in Morocco today. Where are the umbrella carriers?
I know actors do csrry on in extreme temperatures, Bardem speaking of rivers of sweat running down from under his various prostheses (sp?) during filming of Time of Cholera.
p.s. thanks for that picture of prince dastan Get Real - wonderful potential for this film!
Hey Get Real :D Thanks for that picture - and I'm counting belts. That looks pretty similar.
Hi Anon, yes, very powerful and very intimidating. I cannot wait to see Jake with his Brothers tat!
Hey Pia! - I hope that soon the exterior shots will be done and then Jake can be back to do the blue screen stuff in Blighty - little chance of him overheating here :)
Is that a bruise below his ribs??? I've just had a long conervsation with a friend (she's a nurse) - and it seemed that he gave his body on the pictures a special inspection while I'm more interested in the pants - in case a friends will ask for a pattern since he loves the games. :o)
It's hard to say which of the photos is no. 1... dressed, *half dressed*... It'll be another long discussion with a friend.
I remember that we watched "The Field" and "In The Name Of The Father" during an English lesson. But I don't remember much.
T.
Hey T :D I was looking at these marks and I was wondering if they showed where Jake had taken off some other parts of his costume. There are other red marks on him, like arm bands and maybe a chest plate were rubbing. Hmmmm. Or has he just given a sand monster a battering?
Take your time deciding which of the 43 Jakes you want - there are quite a few left :D
Yeah - so in a way these PoP piccies aren't fair since they only show a bit, though no one can complain. But a warrior has to cover his body a bit more. :o) We've also discussed these other *marks* too. She offered to do the first aid when needed and I told her that would be your job. :o)
Hope Disney will release some official pictures within the next couple of weeks, though that's wishful thinking. :o(
T.
My favorite, among the many, is the one where he's gallantly offering his arm to godmother Jamie Lee to take - the chest and arms in that t-shirt are incredible. :)
Thanks for that, T :) I have my healing lotions ready to go :D I do hope we get some full regalia pics pronto...
Hi Anon! I do love that picture and Jamie looked very happy to be walking down the street on the arm of such a gorgeous young man - sigh. Jake just looks great in a t-shirt, no two ways about it :D
See you on Monday!
Have a Jake weekend!!!!!!
:O)
Have a great weekend, Sara - see you Monday!
I really like maggie and peter's picture, they do seem so lovely!:)
viv
Hi Viv - Good to see you again!Maggie and Peter look so good together :D
