Jake Gyllenhaal: Natural born swimmer - and Brother Jake is 'sweet'?

The American swimmer Michael Phelps has had a little bit of success lately, winning more gold medals in China than most countries. Not surprisingly, expectation of a biopic is high and a site today listed Jake Gyllenhaal as one of its five choices for the role - here is an actor who could realistically play an Olympian.

So, aside from the fact that Jake has definitely got the muscles to swim further and with more power and speed than many types of fish, here are some of the reasons why Jake is a natural swimmer.

1. Jake's swimming stamina was made clear on the Jonathan Ross Show last October - how many other stars would swim across the Atlantic (there and back in one long weekend) to make amends for their carbon footprint? Not many, I hear you say.

#

2. Jake has had experience of being a fish - an orange fish no less.

3. Jake looks bloody good in blue swimming shorts.

4. Jake's youthful ambitions for the water were expressed at an early age by a) nicking speedoes (a desperate act) and b) wrestling jellyfish off MV tourists.

5. Training for Jarhead involved, each day, anything from 20 minutes in the pool to an hour - this differs according to the interview and has been mocked by witness Peter Sarsgaard.

6. Jake can model a towel like no-one else - it does help if it's stripey.

7. In The Day After Tomorrow, Jake received training on how to deal with a deluge in a busy New York City street.

8. If you're going to spend time in a pool, you'll also want to spend time by it, and that means a taste for cocktails is essential.

One review of Brothers - Jake 'sweet'?

Jeffrey Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere last night included a review by someone who claimed to have seen Brothers. It's so spoilery on one aspect that it led to cursing, so if you don't want to know anything about the relationship between the three leads, don't go there. If you do, here's the link. However, their opinion is this, bearing in mind that the viewer also found the original a 'bit weak': 'Jake and Portman were sweet; Sam Shepard adds a small but interesting motivation that I don't remember from the other version; Tobey is the revelation.' One adjective that has never even occurred to me when describing Jake's acting is 'sweet'. Roll on the time when we can see it, and Brother Jake, for ourselves.

Hello!!!

About the first part of the post: Jake could play the Easter bunny and I would go to see him, but wouldn't it be brilliant if he played a role where lack of clothes is a must?
He definitively has the body and the skills to convey the pressure and the emotions that an Olympic swimmer must go through.
My only complaint is that swimsuits at the Olympics cover way too much!!

Thanks a lot for the information about Brothers! :O) I can't imagine how Tobey Maguire can outshine Jake although is good to read that his performance was good. Actors usually say that working with good actors make their own performances better. So I'm looking forward to see Jake in Brothers. IMDB has Decemeber 4 listed as release date but I'm afraid it won't reach this half of the world until February or March 2009 :O(

Hi there Sara! Very good point about the swimming costumes - and also there is far too much waxing going on...

It is good to hear Tobey is good in Brothers but outshine Jake? I think not ;D I'm looking forward to seeing a film with three leads all bouncing off each other and making a film to remember. I hope we get more information soon, I really do. I'm hoping we see it here in the UK this side of Christmas but it's just a hope :(

Hope everyone's having a good evening! Is it Friday yet....

I love the idea of Jake playing Michael Phelps, but then we'd have to worry about them waxing him again if he does! Some of these pics are great, WDW, I've not seen them before, I love the second one, with him coming up out of the water. Who's the lucky mermaid with him btw? I wouldn't mind that job. ;)

Brothers - if by sweet, they mean a someone given a second chance and rethinking his decisions in life, it sounds like a rich and interesting role to me. Over the years, Sam Shepard has always been one of my favorite cowboys too, so it's a film I'm very much looking forward to.

I think playing one sporting hero is enough. I can appreciate the achievements of great sports-peeps and I enjoy watching them do their thing occasionally, but movies about sportsmen won't get me into the cinema. Even for Jake. Well, ok, maybe for Jake. ;-)

I am looking forward to Brothers though. Probably more so than any of the other projects he has lined up.

It's a long way to Friday WDW, sorry. :) Don't wish the time away - it could be a good week. :D

Hi anon! The waxing is an issue without doubt... The lucky lovely mermaid is Marley Shelton (Chloe) in Bubble Boy.

I must say that I am very interested to see Sam Shephard in Brothers. I am a little fearful of Brothers as I think I'm going to be overcome by it. But I'm anxious to see Jake in such a different role.

Hi Rubes :D I am no fan of sport biopics myself. I don't think I've even see one... hmmm, still thinking... nope, not one. But if Jake's in 'em, I'd see 'em. The Joe Namath project sounds more unusual and so I'll be hopeful about that and Jake is clearly keen. I still want to see Jake in cricketing whites on a village green... It is true that I would see Jake in a movie even if it were about volleyball.

Brothers is starting to feel like it's getting closer...

All right, I'll try and keep my pecker up :D

I sure hope Jake doesnt play the prodgial brother in Brothers as
"sweet" ! ! !

CIA analyist meant to be cold and dissipated. Cartoonist meant to be a creepy obsessive. sweet?

I have alot of interest in the story of what it's like for an emotionally traumetized vet to return home to his family, esp. since I have witnessed this in family of friends: "Johnny, I hardly know ye. . ."

actually, I felt the Danish film was a "womans film" in terms of the sensitivity to family, children and emotional nuance.

the prodigal brother is not meant to be "sweet".

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Pia :D I have no expectation of encountering 'sweet' in Brothers. As little as I know about the plot of this film and story, purposefully, sweet is the last emotion I would expect to see associated with it. I'm definitely after something more and I think I'll get it. It's difficult to imagine a 'sweet' prodigal brother.

Ijust wanna kiss him ! . . . .

Anonymous said...

Oh yeah, me too Pia! ** him too!:D

But I am wondering a little, nervously, about Brothers. I think and believe that Jake would be his best in any film. I can't remember, but I saw the 20 most anticipated fall films somewhere, (in the states) and Brothers was not there.:( I am disappointed in a way. BUT, this may be hearsay and not accurate or just a single source. Hold your heads high!! It may be quite dramatic since Heath passed during filming.:((

Oh, the POP body!!!! :DD

Anyway, Tobey would be good, but "outshine Jake" in perfomance, I think not! Although I do like Tobey as an actor. I think he is another fine actor that you can see and feel what they are thinking at the moment in time as does Jake. The facial expressions or the very fine amount of facial expressions and, of course the eyes (the eyes, the eyes) that make us see what their charaters are feeling, thinking, and sensing.

Everyone, I am excited about Jake portraying ledgendary Joe Namath of the New York Jets. Broadway Joe is ~6'2" and, I think, and at the time, ~200 lbs, in the 1960's. I think Jake is close, but needs to keep the muscle, strength, and size on him for this role. So I wonder if it will be the Untitled Moon Project or the football's Joe Namath story that will be first?
What do you think?

Uhh, no waxing on Jake aloud on this site, (oh, day dreaming again about our shirtless wonder of late...sorry;))

I hope Jake is finding fun and a different experience in filming POP. It has to be totally different than any before.

Thanks WDW for the great posts!!

I'm back to admire some pics of Jake a few days ago;)

viv

Ya know, I think that is was the great shirtless Jake in POP that jolted me out of my quietness!!

Everyone have a great week!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning everyone!

Me too, Pia :D

Hi there Viv! Thanks for that great comment - shirtless Jake certainly worked his wonders on you and I'm glad about that :D

I'm taking this as just one subjective opinion about Brothers - I have high hopes for this film, very high. I'm always disappointed to hear anything less than 100% glowing about Jake because - as Pia says - I just wanna kiss him, but one opinion is one opinion. Can't wait to see it for myself! I'll be interested to see how Natalie does as she does seem very young for that part.

I agree that Jake is in perfect physique for Joe right now. It does make one wonder if that'll follow. The Moon Project seems a world away! The Joe project may have been moving on quietly. I wouldn't be surprised if we see that first.

I hope Jake's having a lot of fun on set too :D PoP looks like the kind of thing that'd be fun to film.

Have a great day everyone!

oh my... that pic of Jake as a giant orange fish, that's too funny!

No offense to Tobey, but he hasn't had a great performance on screen since "Wonder Boys", so excuse me if I have my doubt about him being a revelation in the film. It would be a good thing though for the film though.

I know the story of Brothers (and particular scenes as well), so that doesn't really work as spoilers for me :) But Jim Sheridan could have changed many things. Both Tobey and Jake's character go through some transformation in the film, so it will be interesting to see.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Winterbird! Doesn't Jake make a great looking fish :D

As I've said before, I'm not a Tobey fan, quite the contrary, but I'm hoping that he is good for the film! It'll be interesting watching Jake's character change through the film. It sounds like it'll be a totally different role for him. I just hope it gets a release over here at the same time as in the US - fingers crossed... Hope you're having a good day!

good morning/day to y'all

picture of Mike Phelps nekkid on cover of Sports Illustrated. well, looks like.

Morning Pia! Phelps is everywhere here too, along with the sailors and cyclists :D I just hate missing it all though :( Hope it's a good day where you are - mighty cold here...

Jake is known for bringing many levels of meaning to his roles. What is wrong with "sweet" being one of them? If Jake is fantastic at playing "sweet," it means he has a hook that can catch people's interest and adulation.

Jake playing Mike Phelps? I hope Phelps will inspire more people to take up swimming. Maybe Jake can inspire even more people--if they can catch up to him in the pool. ;-)

Well done the Brits - excellent Olympics.

I'd posted already but the @*&^%$" virus on my computer ate it >:o(

It went a little something like this...

Jake as a fish - Ha forgot about that...
Jake is sweet so the review ain't bad.....
Jake has the uncanny ability to make other actors around him look good (Gwyneth *roll eyes*) so I can't wait to see him and Tobey together. They do look alike but have completely different acting styles. Tobey is an amazing actor so bring it on....
Jake's bod and hair at the moment do prepare him better for the Namath role - can't wait for that. Hope its more story than sport...
Jake as Phelps.. dunno - can't see it and don't know why...

... and I do want a Gyllenhug... maybe... one day...

Hey again, Im back; man it has been pouring buckets!

WDW, very clever and funny post - !

Paul, you do have a point about "sweetness" - what's wrong with sweet Jake - the commentator seemed to imply shallowness - and was crticial of whatever he perceived.

I have no opinions about Tobey, as I have taken no special notice of him in films - it's the role he plays in Brotheres that is going to test his skills. I dont know Natalie's "range", either. Jake's role is one in which I can easily imagine him.

Yes, Sam Shepherd can be good, odd to think of him playing Jake's FATHER -

I would love to see the Nameth biopic done as an examination of the rise of celeb culture.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Paul! I just don't see Jake as 'sweet' - never have - 'adorable' is more like it :D

I bet Jake is a speedy swimmer, so I'd be better off staying poolside and keeping the drinks coming :)

Hi Sheba :D Ooh do let me join you in the Gwyneth eye rolling... I just wish the Brothers had been twins and then Jake could have played both parts. I don't want to spend my time wishing Tobey off the screen (I just don't care for him) but hopefully the film is better than that.

Hey there Pia :D I think the reviewer was insinuating shallowness as well. Maybe they missed some of Jake's glances and famous subtlety. I know nothing about Sam Shephard.

That is just what I would like from the Namath film too - certainly nothing that is solely about American football and nothing else. But I'm sure they'll be more to it than that. An examination of celebrity would be interesting, and of course Jake does know a bit about that...

Hope everyone's having a good day :D

sheba said...

Ha, Jake twins... you mean like Eddie Murphy playing multiple roles or like Christian Bale in The Prestige? I don't think my heart could stand it if there were two Jakes :DD

Sam Shephard is a good actor .. albeit. one dimensional.. but he delivers. He's kinda sexy too - the older he gets. There's something quietly dangerous about him.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Sheba! Yeah - everywhere you look Jake G on the screen - sometimes two at a time :D I'll have to investigate Mr Shephard.

Just catching up on today's Olympics - wow!

I am looking forward to seeing Jake and Tobey together. I've enjoyed some of Tobey's movies and he usually puts in a decent performance: The Ice Storm, Pleasantville, Cider House Rules. I think they'll be quite credible as brothers.

I don't want Jake's character to be 'sweet' though. He did that in Lovely and Amazing; he's a full-grown man now. (Although recent pics suggest he may still be growing!)

btw WDW, I nearly forgot: thanks for the pic. :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Rubes :D Had to get your pic in somewhere! I'd forgotten Pleasantville - I really did like Tobey in that. I think I fell asleep during Cider House Rules and I've never seen a Spidey movie. I tried to see the last one but the cinema was full so I saw Harry Potter instead.

I don't think Jake will be 'sweet'. Chuckle at the growing comment!

Have a good evening!

Oh I love Tobey! Cider House Rules was so wonderful, I will never ever forget it, Tobey and Michael Caine, and Charlize Theron too. Some films affect you forever, and that's one of them for me. I loved him in Seabiscuit, and I've seen him in all of the Spiderman films, he's got just the right touch of strength/vulnerability to play Peter Parker, he was great! I adore Jake, and he and Tobey I think have a slight resemblance to each other (less so now that Jake has matured), so I think that they will make very good and convincing Brothers! I was happy to hear about Thomas Newman doing the soundtrack, I loved Wall-E's and I had forgotten how much I enjoyed Jarhead's. :)

sheba said...

Yeah, I loved Plesantville. Seems like they're all interlinked. Apart from the most obvious link with Jake, there's Marley Shelton who starred with Jake in Bubble Boy. Now, Tobey and Jake complete the cycle with Brothers.

I don't think I've ever seen Cider House Rules... is that the one with Tobey, Michael Douglas and RDJ? I loved that one.

Don't worry, we know that Jake won't play 'sweet' in this role - it's just Jake himself that is amazingly sweet as in sweetheart <3

The Olympics have been amazing... I feel like a cougar lusting after all these athletic bodies eg. Chris Hoy, Germaine Mason, the divers, the hurdlers etc... too hot!! Oh, and I do appreciate their performances too ;D

Sorry Anon, but Jake and Peter hate when it's pluralised :DD

Anonymous said...

Hee! Sorry, I remember that clip. :)

That's "Wonder Boys", Sheba, I love that film too, and the book. I think Tobey was good in it. His other films... not so much, but that's just me. :P But then Tobey was in two Ang Lee films (Ice Storm, Ride with the Devil), so he must be doing something right.

In any case, having Natalie, Tobey and Jake together in one film as major leads - that's like a showcase of new generation of Hollywood prime.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Anon! I do agree that Tobey was perfect for the role of Spider-Man and I'm glad that Jake, in the end, didn't get that part. I've not seen Sea Biscuit - I really should, Mr WDW loves it :D The soundtrack for Brothers is going to be FAB!

Hey Sheba! So Marley was in Pleasantville too? I didn't know that. I must see that again - the mother was so amazing. Chris Hoy - what a guy! Oh and big chuckles for the Jarheads memory!!

Hi Winterbird :D - I'd forgotten Wonder Boys, which I did like, but for RDJ. Thanks for the Ang Lee connection. I have trouble likeing Ice Storm - I should persevere :D

This is one reason why I do enjoy chatting here as people make me realise that I need to find out more about actors/films :D
