Jake Gyllenhaal's eyes : 'hurt and delight, mischief and danger' in a glance - and TIFF blues

Today Toronto announced the galas for the festival next month and, as feared, Brothers is not among the list. I'm not the only one feeling gloomy about this tonight - Jeff Wells at Hollywood Elsewhere, while noting that Brothers must not have been submitted, admits to feeling 'damn disappointed'.

So what's one to do except to cheer oneself up with some Jake. The other day I posted a feature about that most marvellous thing - the Gyllenhug. So, here is the second half of that feature - this time looking at that other formidable weapon of Jake's, which has the power to reduce all on the receiving end to a quivering heap - the dreamy, intense stare, remarked upon by so many who see Jake Gyllenhaal - those beautiful pools of blue.

Obviously aware of the power of those eyes of his, Jake takes pity and often wears sunglasses. At the same time, the glasses serve the double purpose of protecting Jake's eyes for our future. Despite his memories of being the four-eyed kid dressed as a tube of toothpaste, Jake has blossomed with age (and contact lenses). However, 'I don't think of myself as good-looking. Not at all. When I was a kid I had these huge glasses. I once went to a fancy dress as a Crest toothpaste tube with these huge glasses stuck on. That is how I see myself most of the time. A Crest toothpaste tube with bad eyesight.'

In the words of actress Amanda Donohoe - and who am I to argue? - 'I wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating biscuits! He has the most gorgeous bedroom eyes. He's quite Irish looking and has a piercing stare.'

David Fincher remarked to Jake in Interview last October - about Douglas Freeman - 'but the light caught your eyes in this really neat way.'

Susan Sarandon from Moonlight Mile knows what she's on about: 'He's gorgeous, and he's got those big dreamy eyes'.

Other descriptions of Jake that make mention of those eyes - and there are many such odes - include: Jake is a 'performer whose dreamy gaze pulls you in as if into deep waters.' The New York Times put it this way: 'With Gyllenhaal, though, the eyes have it; strikingly blue and expressive, they telegraph hurt and delight, mischief and danger.'

Journalists are not the only ones who fall victim to the Jake glance - members of the public are equally vulnerable, including those who, during their encounter with Jake in the streets and parks of cities around the world, are dazzled by those 'sapphire blue orbs', even while attempting, with Jake, to pull a romantically-inclined Atticus off their dog...' [Mental note: get an attractive dog.]

To finish, here is a quote from one of my very favourite interviews with Jake in which the interviewer falls hook line and sinker: 'Gyllenhaal is also great at flirting, joking and flattering, challenging in those areas the likes of Tom Cruise and George Clooney. “You look like a nice mint chocolate chip cookie,” he suggests in reaction to the mint green blouse and a dark brown skirt I am wearing. “I do?” I ask, blushing and feeling like a 14-year-old. At my advanced age, it really does take a great actor to make me feel that way. “That’s my favorite flavor, so I’ll take that as a compliment,” I offer. ““You should – that’s my favorite flavor too,” he replies.'

'Now I’m totally flustered. As a mature professional, I like to think I can handle any curve ball that’s thrown my way, but Gyllenhaal is looking at me with his adorable blue eyes and incredibly long eyelashes. “Okay, where do we go from here?” I say, stalling for time while I try to recollect my next question. “Let’s just talk about ice cream,” he offers, oozing boyish charm.'

As you'll appreciate, it's been incredibly difficult selecting photographs for this post... Includes pictures from IHJ. The eyes are all Jake's.

Another lovely and cute post, WDW.

Poetry should be written about those eyes.

And that interview? what a flirt, Jake! what a flirt!

*off to cook dinner, more later*

have a lovely evening.

Time to unpack the case, dear WDW. No Toronto tidbits from you this year I fear.

Hey Winterbird :D Thank you :) Jake is a flirt, it's official - but he has the eyes for it... Have a lovely dinner and see you later :D

Hi Anon :D I'm sobbing into my vino... Oh well, I hear Devon is lovely at this time of year... :(

His eyes are his lethal weapon. They ought to be registered as such. To me, they're his most striking physical feature. The word "beautiful" doesn't do Jake's eyes justice.

oh blimey. Jake is staring at me!
I'll take danger. With a bit of a mischief. and maybe some delight in the afternoons.

I'm catching up on some 'lympics and have decided that something really must be done about the Brit national anthem. It's a dirge, can't we get something a bit more uplifting? Should I write to my MP or something?

It's no biggie it won't be at the TIFF, many films like Leo's and Kate's "Revolutionary Road" won't be either. :)

Very true, Zodiac - to call Jake's eyes beautiful seems to be completely mising the point :D When I fell for Jake back in 2004 it was a mix between his stunning lips and his eyes - the TDAT pic that I've included here, with the eyes, is as close as I can get to the moment when I first fell for Jake. Whenever I see TDAT I pause it at this scene (the Natural History Museum). Strange now, thinking how long ago that was :D Good to see you!

Hey Ruby :D Are those eyes following you?!

Maybe you should write to the Queen...? It's so seldom that I've heard the National Anthem at the Olympics it's feeling very new! I did notice that the rowers were totally out of sync with their singing :D

Hi Anon :D I'm more disappointed because it's a personal disappointment - it was an incredible experience last year. But there'll be future TIFFs, I'm sure. I've heard about the Leo and Kate movie - looks very interesting, and of course it's a Sam Mendes movie so I have to see it.

Can't see the Queen wanting to give up a song that says how fab she is....... :/

Shame about TIFF, WDW. There's still hope for LFF though. We'll make a night of it if it happens. :)

Those eyes are definitely following me around the room. Maybe I should head upstairs. :D

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ogh Ruby - thanks for that laugh! However much you want to take Jake upstairs, please leave him here with us, eh? Please? I had soooo much fun and indecision choosing the pics, made the post late - Jake's fault...

TIFF and RIFF sound good - I can't say LFF - is it LIFF? or LAFF? Whatever it is, I'm hoping... Jake will be local, true enough. Just one night?! Took me a week just to get over the TDK premiere!

We just need to find an alternative song for the Queen - she may be bored of it by now...

Oh, he's a killah - he truly has the most beautiful eyes (and lips) *in the world*. All of the pics are gorgeous, one after the other, especially my favorite Jack Twist pic, unitl that very last one - which is the coup de grace. Is it any wonder women all over are professing their undying love, writing lusty limericks, etc.? I'm sure they can't help it, and he's said that he hates it, but what can you do. Thanks for the Ode to Jake's Eyes post, beautiful! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Anon - Oh he's irresistable all right :D I'm glad you like the pictures - it was a pleasure but really difficult to pick them! I think Jake's just going to have to get used to us all falling over at one shot from his eyes. Just beautiful. Thank you - and thanks for calling it an Ode :)

We Americans have a patriotic song called "My country, tis of thee," which has the same tune as "God save the king/queen." I believe that Switzertland also uses that tune for *its* national anthem. Really, it's time to write new anthems.

I adore any pictures that show Jake's eyes in all their splendor. I'm also partial to pics of Maggie with the focus on her eyes.

Again, WDW, you really should include some sort of warning for those faint of heart before you post these threads. OMGosh! I was looking at him this morning and talking to him - yes, I do sometimes - and told him that he's unreal - he's too beautiful to be real. Then I come here and you do this!!

I'm convinced , you know, that his eyes are more grey, with a hint of blue than blue. They seem to change colour and pick up what he's wearing or what he's around. Sometimes they look violet - like ET (Elizabeth Taylor - not the other one :DD .... although....).

I'm sure, Paul, the American version is sung with a bit more tempo than (as Ruby calls it) our 'dirge'. Very true, perhaps Charles will change it when he becomes Monarch. He's quite 'hip' so there's hope ;D

Oh, and thanks Winterbird for the previous info on Wonder Boys x

Good morning everyone! It does the heart good to look over these pics this morning - nice to have Jake keeping an eye on me :D

Morning Paul :D I remember at the Olympics last time there were some extremely complicated anthems, I suppose this one is at least easy to remember! We're just not used to hearing it so much :D

You are so right - it is so hard for any pic of Jake to go wrong when the focus falls on his eyes :D Just gorgeous.

Morning Sheba! Eyes like ET?! That made me laugh! I quite regularly talk to Jake in my kitchen each morning - he's there in calendar form :D The eyes do change colour - sigh...

Have a good day!

Has anyone seen EW´s Fall Movie Preview issue?

"Brothers" is not mentioned and it is not even listed on the release calendar for December.....together with the disturbing silence and the non-existing buzz I say something is wrong...very wrong...

Hello!!

OMG! I almost fall off my chair with that last picture!! Those eyes are sooooooooooo sweet and so beautiful!!! AWWWW!!!!!!!

Do you think his parents ever grounded him when he was a kid? Because with those puppy eyes, how could you get mad at him?

I'm drooling all over the keyboard here!!

Ruby said...

don't worry yet Anon. Brothers is more a winter release than a fall release. And EW are not the movie bible. :). I doubt anything is wrong. It will be a good movie, but not a blockbuster.

Zodiac said...

33% in PoP. It's become so complicated I need to read things online in order to play it further.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi everyone :D Been out this evening - thank you Ruby, but please, you can keep the mascarpone (ugh) :)

Hi there Anon - I don't seen anything wrong myself. I don't see Brothers as the kind of film EW would be getting ecited about and it's quite late in the year for a Fall/Autumn survey. It's all very low key, that's true, but I do believe we're in for a treat!

Hey Sara! So glad you like the pics - it was a burden of heaven picking them :D

Rubes - thank you for a lovely evening xx

Zodiac you are doing brilliantly! I can't do anything without having some walkthrough site open on the PC. This weekend I will try and catch up with you. Good job!

Have a lovely evening everyone :D

The Russian national anthem was so complex that few Russians knew it, so they wrote a new one. The old one made me think of the Marxist "Internationale." I haven't heard the new one.

I've heard it said that some English people would like their anthem to be "Jerusalem."

I'm sure Jake got grounded a few times, as he had a mischievous sense of humor.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi paul! U'm rather partial to Jerusalem myself - a lovely poem and some gorgeous piece of music. Stirring :D I used to like the ld Russian national anthem - I didn't realise they'd changed it :(

Jake definitely has a great sense of humour - a little naughty, I think :D

Oh, Oh, WDW...are you trying to give us a heartattack!!! I'm still catching my breath. WOW!
Eyes, Eyes, and yes WDW............(I was wondering before reading anyone's comment...:), what about those lips!;)) I've been a huge fan of the shape of Jake's lips. I can draw the shape of his lips with my eyes closed. Love them!

Yes--Zodiac, "leathal weapon" of the eyes, absolutely! (along with everyone else thinking the same) Maybe a Jake in a Leathal Weapon film. Oh, just fantisizing;) Never mind.:D Just kidding:DD

Hey Sheba, I can understand the eye's may be changing color. But, I do have to mention that Jake's eyes probably, seem, to change colors due to lighting, the color of clothing, even his mood of the day. Why I say this is, that...(I NO way am I could ever compare my eyes with our Jake:)) ,but, my mother has green eyes and father has blue eyes, so my eyes have forever seem to change. Sometimes bluer, sometimes more green, however, it is when I am most upset that my eyes become an almost light aqua color, and actually a heather grey color at less turbulant times, but I am a complete mess otherwise:) Who knows.

Thank you WDW for the great posts and the pics,...*catching my breath*, once again, and yes almost falling off of my chair too, once again, Sara:D:D We can fall off of our chairs together when WDW posts, yet, another great post!! How about it?

Good night, everyone, sleep tight with Jake eyes and lips in your dreams:) They will be in mine;)

Morning Viv and thanks so much for such a lovely comment! I'm so glad that you enjoy the posts. But when it comes to Jake's eyes, it's so hard to go wrong :D The lips are a big reason why I fell for Jake in the first place and I thought they merited an appreciative post of their own :D

Your eyes sound lovely - I love eyes that change colours. Mine are just blue (except when I've had a long night then they're a fetching shade of red). My nephew has one green and one blue eye.

Hope you have a lovely day :D
