With tongue firmly in cheeks, yesterday we were reflecting on the hazards of having a passion for Jake Gyllenhaal - following the tall and unlikely story that an employee at Ealing Studios was given the boot for proclaiming her undying lust for said actor. Quite apart from this inspiring some poetic types to retell the story through limerick, it also made me want to take a quick look (yes please) at one of the mighty weapons that Jake has in his arsenal. A short time ago, we looked at that formidable piece of kit - the kiss - so it seems only right to illustrate today's post with another of Jake's masterly techniques for reducing us all to mush - The Gyllenhug.
The Gyllenhug is not something to be treated lightly. On the set of Zodiac, David Fincher saw fit to warn fellow crew memers about the hug, as reported in Total Film back in 2007. When Jake approached cinematographer Harry Savides, Finched warned 'Watch out... You'll get a hug'. Fortunately, the arrival of a tray of Starbucks saved the day.
But David Fincher is not immune himself - he too has fallen slave to Jake's hug. As has another director, Gavin Hood.
Fellow Zodiac castmembers have also succumbed, including Robert Downey Jr but, most especially, Mark Ruffalo, who has been hugged at awards ceremonies and at fortuitous meetings in the street. In addition to the encounter outside the NYC restaurant (notable for being decorated with giant pencil crayons), GQ magazine, way back in February last year, recorded that Mark had been in Hugo's restaurant when Jake arrived and Mark did not escape the resulting clinch.
The awards ceremony is a convenient and very suitable venue to hug Jake. The exchange of awards makes hugging entirely apropriate and desirable. The best example of this is when Jake presented Jennifer Aniston with her GLAAD, leading to not just the type of hug that makes one forget one's in a packed out theatre but also to a little sway.
But premieres and the euphoria that goes with the red carpet is another very popular place for a hug and close embrace.
But Jake doesn't just need a formal occasion for a hug - the street provides ample opportunities, especially in NYC and LA. However, it is worth bearing in mind that the majority of people that Jake hugs in the street know him. But not always...
If the street is too open for an embrace, there is always the outdoor seating area of a restaurant.
It is a well known fact that people especially want to hug gorgeous, sexy young actors when they are holding a little cute puppy. While it can be argued that the little cute puppy can be used as a convenient excuse to hug said gorgeous, sexy actors, it is perhaps a useful tip to store away. However, having said all that, the hugging evidence below is confined to family - and the puppy may be receiving more hugs than anyone - and so maybe this tip does have its limitations.
And then there are the people lucky enough to work for Jake and/or to be his friend, because the rewarding hugs seem frequent, freely given and heartfelt.
What can be said with no fear of contradiction is no-one can resist.

I want one!!
Please form an orderly line behind - hmmm wonder who - moi! :D
Awww! I feel all warm and fuzzy!!!
I think we should think of a special award that Jake will be the very first recipient of and we should arrange for him to receive it while he is in the UK finishing PoP! Then we can have a special representative presentation committee of about two people,...besides myself, who will all get a Gyllenhug.
Only two? :-(
I wonder if Prince dastan hugs anyone in "Prince of Persia?"
WOW!! I want a Gyllenhug!! I will stand in an orderly line, I won't line jump. We must get our turn!!
I've been away for too long. Thanks WDW for all of the great posts that you do:)))
Yes, I would LOVE a hug, too!;) Yes, Paulh, I too wonder if the Prince will give free hugs!! WDW is 1st, of course!;)
Oh, it's me viv @520 :)
Good morning everyone! Chucking it down out there... And it's Monday... but somehow the image of a Gyllenhug is perking me up :D
Hi Anon (23:45) :D That's an excellent idea! Then Jake could have the task of giving each of us a hug - could take a while, good job he has those arm muscles... :D
Morning Paul! I reckon the Prince is going to have a fair bit of hugging to do - the Princess should get a couple at least...
Hi there Viv! Good to see you and thanks so much :D Jake's very lucky to have such an orderly line waiting for his hugs!
Have a great day everyone!
What a cute post :)
I am not a big hugger, but I'd make an exception for Jake... lol.
Wonder if he hugged toothless old ladies who were on his round of "meals on wheels" too?
have a good day, everyone :)
Morning Winterbird :D Good to see you'll make an exception for Jake! Jake definitely is a hugger so I'm sure toothless old ladies would get one too! Have a good day :)
Hello everybody!!
It's good to be back :O)
WOW!! I want a Gyllenhug!! I will stand in an orderly line, I won't line jump. We must get our turn!!
Me too!!
I will wait in line no matter how long it takes. I want a Gyllenhug (brilliant name!)... or two... or three... or.... ,Op
Have a Jake week!!!
I'd be happy to write a final scene, in which Prince Dastan takes a time machine to the late 1930s, and has the Gershwins' song "Embrace me, my sweet embraceable you" playing in the background. Maybe that song will be an earworm for some of you today. ;-)
Aww, such a cute post. :) I want a Gyllenhug too! *gets in orderly line and tries not to push her way to the front. ;)*
Hi Sara! Hope you had a good weekend. I think we may need a rota... :D
Morning Paul :D Ooh I like it. It also reminds me that so far we haven't put much thought into what scenes we want to add into PoP - after all, we had some good ideas for Brothers (I'm expecting a credit for us all at the end of the film).
Hey Get Real :D Thanks! I've just been looking back over some of these pics and really admiring Jake's hugging technique - and it's extremely generous and open.
I do appreciate everyone's commitment to form an orderly line - Jake would be very impressed :D
given the recent pictures, what PoP will need is bathing scene, including a shampoo, followed by a massage with essential oils for the bruising and other tender bits.
I have a very clear idea of how this will look and so I should take over directing duties for this scene. I'm very hands-on in style, by the way, and a bit of a Fincher when it comes to takes. :P
Jake is very affectionate. Gavin Hood is very tall.
Ive been studying ancient persian erotic art, they do stuff with camels and so forth oh well. I guess this is a PG film, which is probably a good thing.
but I'll volunteer to write love scenes, anyway, there can perhaps be an adult version of this picture on the directors cut.
Hey Ruby :D Good idea - I'm thinking Persian Baths, petals in the bathwater, incense, gentle music and me with a loufer. I think it could work. Jake and I'd be happy to do as many takes as you wish :D
Hi Pia! Love scenes would be good - one every ten minutes at least. I think they'd make perfect additions for the Director's Cut.
stuff with camels?
*is confused*
"I'm thinking Persian Baths, petals in the bathwater, incense, gentle music and me with a loufer."
I'm thinking Jake on a huuuuuge four-poster bed.
I can't believe I said that.
Hey Zodiac! You did say that and I heard you! :D
OMG you guys will settle for incemse and a loufer when you can do it with camels?
Im sorry, all that hugging made me crazy, WDW. And I hate to be the
Doctor Ruth of doin' it with beasts: I did after all enlighten y'all about octopodomy. WHERE IS NADINE?
Heehee Pia - I tell you what - you can have the camels and I'll have the incense, Jake and a loufer :D
Camels? Huh?
I can't think much beyond undoing all those belt buckles and getting the caveman clean!
But there must be derring-do and swashbuckling and stuff. And more of that nekkid mud-wresting. :D
But then he'll need bathing all over again.....*sigh*
I, personally, do not want the camels, but a loufa is no substitute for Jake, just sayin'
! ! !
and WHERE IS NADINE? ? ? ? ?
she would never put up with loufa love.
Hi Ruby, you may need help with all those buckles. I find it interesting that mud wrestling is becoming a feature of all of our scripts for Jake. I do think directors should take note. And mud is cheap and Jake likes it - he said so to Interview.
Hey Pia! Who said the loufer was a substitute for Jake? :D He's gonna need a hand scrubbing that back...
Hope everyone's having a good evening!
btw, isn't it 'loofah'? :)
Is it? It's not a word I've regularly spelt!
Hey WDW!!!! Just wanted to let you know that I finally received a check in the mail for Nailed. I received a check of $79.66...don't really care about the amount..no amount of money is worth being in the same room as Jake!
Hey Nicole! That's great :D If I were you, I'd frame it. Maybe that means Jake's just been paid too in which case he can take us all out to dinner!
Good to see you :D
Mud wrestling?
It's not in any of my scripts, and I'm not planning to add it in the future. :-(
But chocolate syrup would meet with my approval. Yum!
Though I'd prefer to see Jake in peach yogurt. Don't ask why....
