Many of you will know that Maggie Gyllenhaal had a film come out lately - it's done rather well at the box office. But I am also very excited to see that Peter Sarsgaard is about to reach our screens. Although with a limited release, Elegy arrives in theatres on both side of the pond this Friday (August 8). Last night, Peter and other cast members, including Penelope Cruz, attended a screening hosted by The Cinema Society and Glamour at the Tribeca Grand Screening Room in NYC. Maggie wasn't there but it's good to see the spotlight on Peter and his co-stars.
Of course, Elegy also features the dastardly Prince of Persia villain Ben Kingsley - just as Peter's future release An Education stars Prince Dastan's mentor Alfred Molina. Shrinking the world still further, Carey Mulligan appears in An Education and she will also be seen in Brothers - it's all like one big movie sometimes...
Maggie, meanwhile, has been speaking some more about The Dark Knight. This interview with Chuck the Movie Guy includes so many spoilers it should come with a health warning. So please be aware this video is crammed to the hilt with SPOILERS and watch at your own risk.
By the Sea
In another recent interview, Maggie mentioned her love for the ocean (as well as jewellery): 'Being around water, and in water, makes you feel so good. The ocean is really sexy, and the wilder and wavier the better!' This may have a lot more to do with memories of summers spent on Martha's Vineyard than of off-season ferry crossings over the Irish Sea, but this got me thinking about Jake Gyllenhaal and the sea. After all, Jake once said that his favourite place on earth were the cliffs of Gay Head on MV.
Jake also said (in one of my favourite Zodiac interviews): 'I really like to sail, actually. My family has a house in Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts, and we've had it since I was very little, so, I've sort of been on the ocean as a lifeguard from when I was like, 16 to 18.'
Jake has been photographed in, by and, even, walking upon the sea. In Cannes, the sea formed the perfect backdrop for interviews, photoshoots and premieres. In the idyllic setting of the Eden Roc hotel in Antibes, along the coast from Cannes, Jake seemed inspired in some of his most eloquent and thoughtful interviews to date. 'Venice is beautiful, but I never got to do my interviews by the ocean. This is great - it's beautiful' (BBC News).
Stories of rescuing poor swimmers from the attacks of Jellyfish are legendary - appearing with almost predictable regularity at BAFTA ceremonies - as are reminiscences of running along the beach as a teenage lifeguard, Bay Watch style. Speedos stolen for a dare from the Beverley Center no doubt came in handy.
Jake is rarely far from the sea - he doesn't just get to spend non-working summers on MV, plus surfing holidays in Hawaii (while collecting best young actor awards), he also spends much of his time by the warm Californian Pacific Ocean - although if you stand still on Venice Beach for more than five minutes you'll be knocked down by a cyclist and/or rollerblader. Much to contrast with the sand and mountains of Morocco.
It's therefore not surprising that the Oceana charity is close to Jake's heart (as we have previously seen), taking part in annual fundraising dinners. But sometimes the sea gets a little close for comfort.
In one of my most tenuous links yet, in this video Jake mentions the sea - very theatrically.
And finally... A flying visit to NYC?
One sighting has Jake and Reese in NYC last weekend - attending the 'Deerhunter and Black Lips' free concert at McCarren Pool in Brooklyn on Sunday night. If it is true, then this was a very fleeting visit indeed because yesterday Reese was back shopping in LA and, presumably, Jake is back at work on PoP. My ears did perk up at the mention of them being near the beer tent - always the best location at such events.

They spot him here they spot him there
Those frenchies spot him everywhere!
Is he in Brooklyn or New Jersia
That dammned elusive Prince of Persia!
Pia, you're on fire!
Lovely post, WDW. I love the sea myself.
Hi Patient Pia! I wanna know where he is too!!! Ahem, sounded about 3 years old then but the sentiment is true :D Love ya poem :D
Hey! Zodiac's in London town! Sorry about the weather :\ As an islander (I suppose) I love the sea, but I love the ocean off California especially :D
Good morning everyone! A grey wet day here so I hope the rest of you are getting some seaside weather :D
The ocean off California, WDW? California's a big state, and the ocean at the Northern end starts to get a bit cold. I've tried swimming on the Oregon coast, and even in the summer it ain't very warm (Brr!)
But Maui's a different story. I love it when you show those pics of Jake surfing in Maui. The ocean is as warm as bath water. Wonderful!
Morning Pia! I took a car down the length of California's coast not that long ago and it was just gorgeous! And I saw big elepghant seals squashing little elephant seals - not so good - but I don't swim in the sea so it all looked warm and toasty from the sunny shore :D
I'm having longing memories for the warm seas off Zanzibar and Mauritius now... Love seeing Jake in Hawaiian Seas :)
Hope you're having a good day!
Oh I love the sea...my birthplace is not far from the seaside...
Seaside and Jake would be my dream...
Speaking of which, I'm gonna leave for my birthplace on Saturday and I'll be back in early September, I expect that you'll bring me some great news and great pics at my return WDW, you never failed to pleasantly surprise me in the past.
I have faith in you and your lucky star when it comes to Jake.
Have a great day everyone.:)
Hi Xenia! How lovely to have such a long break - I hope you have a really good time - we'll look after Jake for you and I hope that there'll be lots of goodies on your return. We'll miss you though so remember to get us some holiday chocolates :D
Hello everyone!!!
Not much to say except that the ocean has the nice effect of making Jake to take off some clothes... don't you love the ocean?
Have a Jake day!!
Hey WDW that was Paul, not me!
Although I agree with Paul that in Northern Ca (San Francisc, in my experience) the ocean is pretty chilly, and wild, too, and sorta inhospitable although yes GORGEOUS and the seals and sea lions seem to be happy enuff. But not me! Brrrr!
Loved the Maggie video, she is gorgeously enjoying the success of TDK, it's clear, I love her particular beauty and ease. And to say out loud that it is great to be adored and adorned! (Its also lovely to adore and adorn.)
So I guess if she's not worried about her lil bro, I dont need to brood about whether Jake's hair extensions are clogging up the shower in his trailer, whether he was nuts enuff to go to an outdoor concert in Brooklyn, for goddsake, in the month of August, is Sir Ben making mincemeat out of him, or is the old bastard become putty in J's hands, or are they having a ball doing parodies of Jerry
B., or - WTF is going on? waaaaaa!
I wanna know.
Aside from my childish asides, Im cool, I can handle this.
Think I'll watch some Fred Astaire.
Is it Friday yet?
Hi Sara! Excellent point about oceans and swimming cossies are definitely overrated (if you're Jake, that is :D). Hope you're having a good day!
Posting at the same time!
Ooh many apologies Paul and Pia! My head is not attached to my brain.
I love the thought of what's happening on set with Sir Ben and Jake - I bet Jake has him wrapped round his little finger. I may be self-projecting there but I don't see how Jake's charm can be resisted.
I like to be adored and to adore but I prefer to be bought a nice meal and bottle of wine than a bauble :D
Hmmm, Jake's hair - it's gotta be longer now.... or are the hair extensions at their fullest length? I would so love to see a picture :D
Yes, yes, I also worry about Jake's hair extensions clogging the drain in his bathtub :-(.
My great-grandfather was lost at sea, so later generations of my family have become landlubbers, but it can still be fun to take the ferry to Martha's Vineyard, or row across Lake Winnepesauke.
(sorry abut the previous post, I made a mistake)
Hello again!!!
I don't see how Jake's charm can be resisted
It's been scientifically proven that the Gyllenhaal charm is impossible to resist unless you are a) A stone-cold-hearted b... person or b) an ameba ,OP
See you around!!
Hi Paul! Sorry to hear about the bad sea history... here you can get some very choppy crossings but there's still something about getting the ferry over to the continent on a clear night.
Hi Sara! Poor amoebas, they have a tough life :D
Hope a good evening is being had by all - I do believe it's Friday tomorrow....
It was very, very hard for me to watch "The perfect storm" because of the family tragedy. I was helped, though, by having read the book, and having been deeply moved by the account of a helicopter-assisted sea rescue during the same storm, hundreds of miles south of the fishing grounds. I went to the movie hoping to visualize the successful rescue and thrill in the almost superhuman effort needed to achieve it. The last scene is very sad and lonely, and yet in some ineffable way lighthearted. Nature (in the form of the great ocean) sings its own song, and we can only float along on it...
Jake, as a lifeguard, did his part to keep swimmers safe. At the early morning swim sessions at my local pool, the lifeguard is sometimes asleep. None of the swimmers seems to be concerned.
Paul, I absolutely love The Perfect Storm - everything about it - the story, the acting, music and the emotion I get from it. And I think that's becase I have family history up there in Newfoundland and feel ties to the sea and have always been drawn to that part of the world. I like how the sea is portrayed in that film - it's huge. I don't swim in the sea now as I was taught to swim in it and it was too immense.
No lifeguards at all at the pools near here. If Jake were the lifeguard I wouldn't bother going into the water :)
Hi there WDW and friends,
WDW, you're in my mailbox tonight.:)
What a lovely post...Pia your rhyming rocks...and I'm a Perfect Storm lover too.
back soon
Not spamming WDW:) but I forgot to tell everyone that 'Full Count' will be on Showtime here--NYC, NY--tomorrow night at 6:PM, starring Andy Baldwin and the gorgeous Austin Nichols, who has a small part.
Austin is way too good for this all over the place film, but he's a totally hot and delicious looking dude so I had to watch most of the movie. I caught it at 0600 this morning.
Meant to say Peter is gorgeous lately...looks happy and very hot!*thud*
I hate to calc where Jake and Reese may or may not be, but it warms the cockles of my heart to read that they might have been here. Anyway Michelle still lives in Boerum Hills...and Jake could be visiting...it's so easy to get around this city/country if you have a plane/private and some bucks.
Enjoy "Full Count" if you get to see it:)
xoxoxo
sass
Morning Sass! Glad to hear someone else likes Perfect Storm - Mr WDW is always teasing me for that one :D I've not seen Full Count. Peter is so, so hot and I just love him, as people can probably tell!
I take all these sightings with a big pinch of salt too - I think the US is quite a way to travel from Morocco for a weekend, but you never know... Hope you have a good day!
The numerous spurious Jake sightings? Many years ago, when it became obvious that Jake would be a hottie, a top cloning specialist who was a friend of the Gyllenhaal Family offered to clone Jake. So, Jake's Clones can be seen anywhere and everywhere while the original jake goes on about his work. :-)
I'm coming in after three days away from a screen to endorse Sass's comment about Austin in Full Count - though I still don't understand the ending, quite :) *
I wonder where Austin is, too! ;)
Morning Paul :D
Hey there Nouskie!
