The sound of Brothers and Peter Sarsgaard buys a penguin

The Toronto International Film Festival has announced its lineup of world premieres for this year and, unfortunately, and it's a big unfortunately, Brothers is not on the list. So no gallavanting around the hotels, bars, restaurants and theatres of Toronto for WDW this year. But, in the words of someone, there is always London... So here's hoping, albeit tentatively, that the film will still get a festival showing (Edited to add that the TIFF galas will be announced on Tuesday so there is still hope!). The photo below is no 34 from the Sky Showbiz feature yesterday.

While we're on Brothers, some news today, to me at least, is that the score for Brothers is being written by none other than Thomas Newman. This name will ring bells because he was also the composer of Jarhead's score, as well as the music for other Sam Mendes films. The Jarhead score is, in my opinion, second only to that of Brokeback Mountain in terms of the way it manages to translate a story into rhythms, beats and melodies while also generating a power in its own right and a life of its own, beyond its film. Newman's Jarhead score, so great to drive to with its pulsing beats and its range of Middle Eastern and Western sounds and instruments, mixes perfectly well with the soundtrack's bands, including T-Rex, Naughty By Nature and Tom Waits.

Now, who would've thought that Newman also wrote the score for Wall-E and, nostalgic sigh, Finding Nemo?

The other information on Brothers today has a technical flavour. For instance, we learn that 'For outputs to sound and music BROTHERS is exporting Quicktime movies at half rez (965x540) using the Photo JPEG codec. The later was found to work best by trial and error - part of the nightmare of QT codecs. Another important feature of this workflow is that everyone is working at the same speed, 23.976. The audio was recorded at 48.048 at 24 fps on a Diva, which when imported into the Avid played at the correct speed for sync.' So, that's cleared that up. You can read more here.

The warrior within

I have noticed that a measure of the huge attention being paid to the new photographs of Jake Gyllenhaal on set in Morocco has now moved a few inches south - to Prince Dastan's exquisitely arranged tangle of three belts and sash. With thanks to Get Real, here is a picture of the Warrior Within Prince of Persia, which demonstrates that, although the movie storyline is based on the Sands of Time videogame, influence for the Prince's look includes inspiration from later incarnations of the beleaguered Prince.

For all those Gyllenhaalics who are new to the Prince of Persia videogames, I thought this video might help you out a bit by explaining some of the background. This might say a bit about me, but when I saw this for the first time yesterday, I did two things: disturbed the entire neighbourood with my laughter and got out my PS2 and Sands of Times to take out my frustration for the two-year wait on evil sand monsters.

And finally...

Peter and Maggie were seen out on Tuesday shopping in Brooklyn for a stuffed penguin. Although my favourite animal, I fear this gift was not for me, but I was thrilled to see that Peter is a fellow penguin lover. Despite this distraction, I can still appreciate that Maggie looks as simply stunning and sexy here, off duty, as she does on a red carpet.

Thanks to Jody for the TIFF gala update. Includes pictures from links, Inf Daily and IHJ.

Great - finally getting some information on "Brothers"...

Kate, the Gala presentations (which "Rendition" was part of last year) and further films presented in Toronto will be announced next tuesday. Lets keep our fingers crossed that "Brothers" will be among those films.

I love how Maggie always is wearing comfortable sandals when out with Peter and/or Ramona.

Hi there Jody :D Ooh, thanks for that - that's good news and I feel more hope again. I'll add an edit to the post.

Maggie looks great! And as someone who can't wear anything higher than Nike Shox without falling over, I definitely approve of the shoes!

Hi Rubes! I love that video so much, I'm surprised I haven't worn it out :)

Oh please please please, even if they skip TIFF, could they have it in London?

Thanks for the Brothers news :)

Apparently Maggie wants Ramona and Matilda to be friends.

However reliable these people are....

Morning Narcissa :D Well, as it's OK Magazine that's not reliable at all! Maggie and Michelle have probably known one another for some time.

I totally agree. I honestly think that when Maggie is wearing comfortable clothes, she looks good.

As for Ramona and Matilda being friends, that's not something that can be arranged by their mothers or anyone else. Children are apt to have minds of their own on such things.

I don't understand the festivals at all. Why wouldn't "Brothers" have its world premier at Cannes or Venice or somewhere else? Why would it have to be at Toronto?

Hi Paul :D Maggie looks great in these casual clothes.

I suppose the thing about the festivals is it's all about timing and Toronto is at that time of year when winter releases can get a preview. Of course Venice is about the same time so I don't know how one festival chooses a film and another doesn't. A complete mystery.
