Although we must now wait longer than it is reasonable to expect any Gyllenhaalic to have to wait for Jake Gyllenhaal to bear arms (and, hopefully, chest) as the Prince of Persia, some comfort and not a little relief can be taken from the news today that Nailed might still be a goer.
According to Hollywood Reporter, David Bergstein, the man responsible for ThinkFilm and Capitol Film, still holds that Nailed will have an early 2009 release, even though other films in their production line have been cancelled or sold - or just not spoken about. Nailed may seem like the one bankable asset that should be held onto at all cost but even so there is still debate about just how much work still needs to be done on the film, and not just in post-production: 'Bergstein said the guild problems have been resolved and that the movie only needs two days of pickup shots; others said scenes crucial to the film are missing. In any case, additional days were funded and the film will arrive on schedule in early 2009.'
The article makes for complicated and painful reading and shows how one man managed to antagonise much of Hollywood while winning a ranking position on the unions' hitlists - a co-founder of ThinkFilm says that recent events at the company have broken his heart. we remember that in Toronto employees lost theior jobs. If Nailed does make it to some screens early next year, it may well be by the skin of its teeth.
And with an eye on Jake's future projects, last night the Possible Dreams auction took place in Martha's Vineyard. The event was attended by Doug Liman who saw his lot - a visit to the set of the Unnamed Moon project - go for $8,500. Rather intriguingly, the winning bidder has also been offered the opportunity to help write the script. 'Mr. Liman said he had already talked to winner Mr. Burstein, whose son David is a young filmmaker, about sitting in on the writing process for the film at Mr. Liman’s home as a part of the dream.'
This suggests three things: 1) UMP will happen; 2) we shouldn't hold our breath; 3) Doug may need more help with the script than he's letting on - so time to start sending in some ideas.
Apparently Doug has been involved with the auction for several years: 'For Mr. Liman, whose father gave dreams for several years himself, the annual fund-raiser is unique. “People who come to the Vineyard are committed to it not being a playground for the rich and famous,” he said. Last year Mr. Liman paid for a day’s horseback riding with Clarissa Allen of Chilmark. “It was the most magical day I’ve ever had on the Vineyard. It was truly irreplaceable. No one but her could have offered that ride,” said Mr. Liman adding that Mrs. Allen secured permission from up to 20 neighboring residents in order to plot the course of their ride. “You don’t get to do that even if you’re a billionaire. It’s access to something truly unique that’s not doable anywhere else,” he said.'
You can see some pictures of the event here.
Perhaps not surprisingly considering how few teens went to see Rendition, Jake did not win the Teen Choice Movie Actor Award. The award (and surfboard - that'll look snug on the mantelpiece) went instead to an actor I've never heard of but teens clearly have, Channing Tatum. But now you can vote for Jake in that regular summer event, the Hello Magazine monthly vote for most attractive man. This time, Jake is up against the likes of Christian Bale, James McAvoy, Hugh Jackman and Colin Firth - so no competition there then - and, at the time of posting, Jake is in the lead. I'm sure I'm not the only one to recall the bloody battle aginst Jon Bon Jovi back in 2006 (which we won, of course).
And very many happy returns of the day from everyone at WDW to IHJ's gorgeous Stephanie!! Happy Birthday! So who's hidden the cake...?
Pictures from IHJ.

Happy birthday Stephanie *)
I am just wondering if Nailed will meet the same fate as Heath's movie Candy. Thinkfilm was part of that movie too(though when I looked up Nailed it didn't say Thinkfilm it said the production company was capitol films)
Candy was never given any commercial time, no ads were run. I don't know if there were any print ads either. It came out in Dec of 2006 and was in limited run. I was lucky I saw it in DC at the only theater that was showing it. And it was only in the theater for 6 days. I thought it was a great movie. When it came out on DVD I had to special order it.
So we'll have to see what fate has in store for Nailed
happy birthday Stephanie! a world without IHJ would be no world at all. . . may all yr dreams come true!
anon, for me fine films like Candy that go straight to DVD mean I get to see them more quickly, very selfish, but Im so grateful they continue to be available -
Funny bit of Jake hanging out in an empty theatre, WDW -
Well, Im willing to wait ("and Im tellin' you, Im not goin, he's the best man I ever had. . .no no no no way Im living without him. . .")
So far. But watch it, Jacobo, Ive got my limits. :D :D :D
Happy Birthday Stephanie. :)
Hi WDW and Co. *-)
Evenin' friends - just spent hours getting my Jake and Heath scrapbooks up to date, ahem - glue everywhere...
Hi Anon :D That's very interesting about Candy and ThinkFilm. By the sound of it several of their films only get a notional release, just to say they've been released. I hope Nailed - as their biggest project - suffers a better fate. As you say, we must wait and see. Whatever happens, we should have a DVD to look forward to but I'd like more than that. Thanks so much for that very interesting comment :)
Hey Pia! A Jakeworld without Stephanie would be drab indeed. I did try to get her Orlando Bloom for her birthday but he's being elusive...
I know what you mean about the upside to straight to DVD movies and that would be the compensation for Nailed but I would prefer to see it on the big screen and then get the works on DVD, along with David O Russell's video diary of the traumas of filming! Hopefully we should know within the next six months.
I liked the pics of Jake in the empty theatre, seemed to go with my theme of the long haul before films such as Nailed and UMP reach our screens. It's like Jake is there waiting along with the rest of us :)
Hi there Ruby! Hope you're enjoying being a lady of leisure this week *)
Hello!!!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY STEPHANIE!!!
This suggests three things: 1) UMP will happen; 2) we shouldn't hold our breath; 3) Doug may need more help with the script than he's letting on - so time to start sending in some ideas.
Loads of screen time for Jake? Without clothes if possible? Sound both interesting and easy to sell for me? I mean... any woman with blood in her veins would pay any amount of money to see an undressed Jake. Wouldn't she? :OP
I have tons of exprience with watching movies in empty theatres being also a Kate Winslet fan myself. And having to wait for the DVD. And watching depressing movies... ::sighs:: Jake is not helping a lot I must say. Neither is Heath...
I guess if I wanted to see happy movies I should be an Adam Sandler fan... mmmm... maybe not.
But pia is right. I have my limits too Jacob!! :O) LOL (O:
Help write the UMP script? Oh that doesn't sound good at all!
But ok if that's what they want:
UCNPBJG (Untitled character name played by Jake Gyllenhaal) faces the ups and downs in a lunar race with the Russians to be the first shirtless astronaut on the moon.
Academy Awards here I come! I'll be sure to remember all the "little people" in my acceptance speech ;)
Hi there Sara! I like the way you're heading with the ideas for UMP - it's hot in space in one of those pokey little spaceships and so a) Jake wears spandex or b) he wears nothing - I could go for either of those. Also a helmet is less desirable than some little breathing device that doesn't cover the face.
Also, if Jake has to colonise the moon then that means lots of love interest and lots of heavy labour. It will also mean he won't have to share screen time with too many people.
I'm a big fan of Kate Winslett (and her hubby Sam of course) - she only lives a few miles from me and I've always liked her - she still drinks in her local :D
hey there Amy! Love the UCNPBJG! That is an excellent point - in order for the script to wrok we need a name for the Unnamed Jake Character in the Unnamed Moon Project. Definitely not another Howard...
Shirtless astronaut - like it :) Maybe the subtitle should be 'It's Hot in Space'...
Doug Liman, we can help you! But on a seriousish note - I'm not impressed that Doug is being this free and easy with roping in the helpers to write UMP! Odd state of affairs. Maybe we could all contribute a line each...
Happy birthday Stephanie - just made it - just in - haven't read everything yet (I will catch up tomorrow WDW).
Hey Nouskie :D Please catch up and then expect a test :) xx
I hope everyone's having a good evening... Is it Friday yet?
Thank you so much for the birthday wishes everyone .. ! =D
.. and thank you WDW for the mention. That was very sweet! *huggles tightly*
- Stephanie
Happy Birthday to the wonderful Stephanie!! :D
Hope everyone had a great day. And that we get to see these Jake movies.
I could send in some story ideas for the untitled moon project. Thing is, I need to know: is this a comedy, or a serious drama? If Doctor Doolittle comnes to greet Jake with a gigantic moth, it would be a comedy. If the moon is full of dominoes, and there's a lot of "Also Sprach Zarathustra," it's a serious drama. Vampires in tutus would just be campy. ;-)
Good morning everyone!
Hey there Birthday Girl :D Hope you had a fun night and have a big hug back! xx
Morning Get Real :D
Hi Paul! Good point, we need a style for UMP (and a name would help...). I'm thinking something along the lines of Jane Fonda's Barbarella film. I'm not sure yet if we need aliens. There has to be more to it than a man (albeit Jake) going to the moon and growing wheat.
Have a great day everyone :D
Happy Birthday Stephanie :)
Don't care much about the Teen Choice thing. Time to move on. Plus teenagers are ficker anyway :)
Even Steven Soderbergh's new film has a hard time finding a distributor, so it is a hard time for independent films. I wonder if Nailed will at least get a round at the various film festivals to gather some interests and perhaps favourable reviews first.
Story concept for UMP... mmm... If they want to do an action thriller, there are only two kinds: either the group of humans fight the Aliens who already colonised Moon, or it's a story where the humans fight among themselves (like "Sunshine").
In any case, Liman openly asking for help (half-joking or not) is not a good sign, I'm afraid. I firmly believe a good movie starts with a good script. I'll try to keep the faith though.
Maybe the Joe Namath project is the one to look forward to first?
Have a good day. I am dead tired today - just watched TDK again last night with a Brokie :)
Morning Winterbird :D Sounds like a good way to spend an evening. But it is tiring.
Liman is definitely not inspiring me with confidence with UMP! But I'm prepared to be pleasantly surprised, but it certainly sounds like it'll be a while. It would be intresting to know how far along the script is for Joe Namath. I find the idea, though, of Scifi Jake very enticing!
Have a good day :D
I find the idea, though, of Scifi Jake very enticing!
Heehee... I find the idea of Jake re-enacting Joe Namath's pantyhose TV commerical very enticing too :P
I find any idea involving Jake an extraordinary idea, they just can't be disappointing.;)
Thanks for the precious info WDW, fingers crossed for all these projects and for more to come...
And of course Happy Birthday Stephanie, you're the light of my Gyllen-life! :*
Oh blimey, Winterbird, now that's a thought!... :P
Hi there Xenia :D That's very true. Whenever Jake's on the screen I'm happy, very happy! Hope you're having a good afternoon :)
Great post WDW!!! I'm so excited to hear that Nailed still may have some hope!! Happy Birthday Stephanie!!
'Mr. Liman said he had already talked to winner Mr. Burstein, whose son David is a young filmmaker, about sitting in on the writing process for the film at Mr. Liman’s home as a part of the dream.'
Reminds me of Rich Kelly's parents, who were able to fund RK's career, visiting the Donnie D set and mom saying that she just hoped Rich wasn't going to portray his parents in a bad light.
I dunno all this frog smooching would drive me nuts.
Which is why I am whut I am today. Nothin. Nowhere. It's because of you, Jack, that Im like this . . .
Seriously, Im just jealous. I'd love to sit around on the Vineyard in the summer working on a film script. How about it, y'all?
"There has to be more to it than a man (albeit Jake) going to the moon and growing wheat."
[WDW]
You've changed, WDW. Not long ago, you would have settled for just Jake, never mind
what he was doing ;-). But seriously (well, not *actual* seriousness, more like comic
seriiousness), the wheat-growing plot reminds from the classic line from Woody Allen's
"Love and Death," which was used eveyr time someone inadvertently mentioned wheat:
"Wheat. Fields of wheat," spokenly reverently and solemnly.
"Seriously, Im just jealous. I'd love to sit around on the Vineyard in the summer working
on a film script. How about it, y'all?" [Pia]
I think they grow wheat on Martha's Vineyard. Wheat. Fields of wheat. You could help them,
Pia. :-) I don't know about you, but the last time I had a full summer off was in 1970. :-(
Since that year, I've either been working or summer-studenting.
Seriously, Im just jealous. I'd love to sit around on the Vineyard in the summer working on a film script. How about it, y'all?
Hehe 'Fer real sista. Yep, planning it for next summer to work my novel 'Life in the Jake Lane' :DD
I think film festivals are the best way forward for these Independent films. I have to see Nailed, in whatever form it takes (preferably on the big screen). It's the RDJ of the film industry (knocked about, down and nearly out but rises to the top - hopefully).
Good morning everyone!!!
Seriously, Im just jealous. I'd love to sit around on the Vineyard in the summer working on a film script. How about it, y'all?
Mmmmm... for me it would more like patrolling around expecting to see Jake. I don't think I would manage to do anything productive if there was any chance to meet him.
WDW!! It's so good to know a fellow Kate fan. It's a good think (for Kate) that I don't live only a few miles away from her or I'm afraid I will become a stalker. Serious worshiping case here (well, I just sacrife the occasional farm animal to her "Kali" photo from Holy Smoke :O) LOL)
Now, don't you wish you lived only a few miles from Jake too? ,Op
Hi there one and all :D
Thanks Nicole :D I'm feeling more hopeful about Nailed again! Bit of a rollercoaster this one.
Hi Pia! That's an excellent idea, and if Doug Liman has any sense in him he'll consider it. I can certainly far worse things to do with my summer than sitting by the sea and writing scenes for Jake. I don't think I'd bother writing scenes without Jake in them :D
Hey Paul! You're quite right - watching Jake growing wheat should be enough for me - and in my fantasy version of Brothers I still see him working on a farm... But it doesn't have to be wheat - it could be asparagus but I suppose that's not so useful on the moon. Summer's off? What are they?...
Hi Sheba :D Exposure at some small events could be a way forward for Nailed but I can't see it getting much of a release, unfortunately. Liking the RDJ analogy!
Hey Sara :D Oh yes, I'm a big fan of Kate's and it's good to know she and Jake are friends (she ahs a great name as well ;D).
Hope evryone has a good evening :)
well actually WDW my idea of sitting around script writng (and Sheba can work on her novel) didnt exactly include Doug Limon. :D :D
Maggie is on the cover of "Marie Claire" magazine (August 2008 issue), saying some interesting things like, "We lived with him [Jake] in Los Angeles when Peter and Jake were making 'Rendition.'
Jake has a beautiful house, much nicer than a hotel. He's great with kids--itcomes naturally to hi. He really has that touch."
When the interviewer mentions having seen a photo of Jake and Reese in the New York Post, Maggie says, "We're so protective of our privacy and our family. The level of invasion is out of control. Jake has gotten more used to it than I have--he rolls with it better."
Aaron Eckhard says of Maggie, "Maggie's got a lot of sass. She has very strong opinions on acting and things outside moviemaking. She's not afraid to speak her mind." He speaks about working with her on "Dark Knight": "I immediately recognized that she was someone I could play with. We'd have our little improvisations before the scene, and she was always trying to get the last word in, and so was I."
That's a relief, Pia. It would have been a little crowded. We can do the script for Doug and he can come along when it's finished to pick it up :D
Hi Paul :D That's an interesting article in Marie Clare. At long last I got my copy. I liked those comments by Aaron about Maggie.
