Fine Just the Way It Is - Jake Gyllenhaal and TIFF 2007

Annie Proulx has published a new collection of short stories from the west: 'Many of the stories in Fine Just the Way It Is are breathtaking in their cool depiction of the hardships of that life and the astonishing amount of stubborn resolve it takes to survive it — or just try to.'

'They are also often breathtaking in their descriptions of the harsh beauty of the landscape, utterly indifferent to humans but irresistible to those who fall in love with its canyons and peaks, its soaring skies and singing rivers. For some of Proulx's characters, that love of the wild land is deeper than anything they feel for other people.'

Back in 2005, Jake Gyllenhaal, Heath Ledger, Ang Lee and the rest of the Brokeback crew took their film to Toronto, where it received a rapturous and deeply emotional welcome. Jake was also there to promote Proof, but it was Brokeback Mountain that Jake still talks about. Also there in 2005 was Gavin Hood, winning the People's Choice award for Tsotsi. The screening of Brokeback took place in Toronto almost three years ago exactly, on September 10. But one year ago today, on 7 September, Jake and Gavin (and Peter) were back in Toronto to present Rendition, on what was without doubt one of the days in my life I will remember always.

Here is a link (which hopefully works...) to the press conference that took place in my hotel, Sutton Place, during which we were waiting outside to see Jake and were not disappointed. We were also lucky enough to have seats in the theatre and to see Jake and all the others take their places, not to mention having them walk past us in the foyer.

These two interviews are a curiosity to me, because they are by the same interviewer - the first interview was back in 2005 and the second in 2007 (with a hot in more ways than one Jake) for Rendition.

I also enjoyed this anecdote from Toronto (unfortunately the link has now gone but I saved it here) and E! Online: ''Jake Gyllenhaal Is a Backpacker: Don't know what that means? It's a term used to describe die-hard hip-hop fans, and I call him that because he told me he is loving the new Talib Kweli album right now. Our interview for his latest film, Rendition (costarring Reese Witherspoon), got really intense because, let's face it, it's about a suspected terrorist who's detained and tortured. To lighten the mood, I asked Jake if he still had the Indigo Girls on his iPod, something he told me several years back. Didn't see that one coming, did ya!'

Includes picture from IHJ and WDW. A big hello and wave here to the three people with whom I was fortunate enough to share the whole wonderful experience, a year ago today.
How time flies!

WDW, you were so lucky to meet him last year. He looks a little bit annoyed in the second interview.

OT: I've just stumbled upon this hilarious video with Heath at Australian Film Awards in 2006 where Heath says from the stage (he received an award): "I made out with Jake Gyllenhaal and now I have a daughter." He also makes another joke about kissing Jake. The quality isn't very good but it's so sweet and funny and breaks your heart all over again.

Hi Zodiac :D Yes, I was so lucky and especially running into him more than once over the two days - just brilliant. I love that bit at the start of the second interview where Jake shows how hot he was. It really was so hot that weekend and there was a lot of press, it must have got irritating.

Thanks so much for the Heath link :D I love those jokes - happy and sad all at the same time.

Wonderful TIFF memories, WDW! It was a special time for sure. Wish I had gotten a chance to meet you all who where there. Maybe next time.

Zodiac, apparently the hotel room they interviewed Jake in had no air conditioning and was boiling hot. I give him credit for even doing the interview in the first place. I don't think I would have been as gracious to do it in those hot conditions. And as WDW said, it was really hot out.

After the major rain we had yesterday, it is again like a beautiful hot summer day here. Hope everyone is having nice weather where you are.

Have a good rest of the evening and an easy Monday everyone.

xoxo

Love Peter's pleasure in writing all over Jake's face!

What a treat to have you guys there!

Whut next?

Speaking of Peter, I saw him in "Elegy" tonight. He played Ben Kingsley's son, and he wasn't an especially nice character, unless you look at the gene pool he had come out of. :-/ Penelope Cruz played a young student in Kingsley's literature class, whom Kingsley later wooed (unbeknownst to his wife).

Toronto is a hard place to run to.

LOVE this post!!!!! HUGE shout out to WDW!!!!

Happy Jakeness Anniversary!!!

I will never forget that day. It is one of my most fun, exciting, lovely memories!! Can I just say. WDW has the most amazing Jake radar of anyone I've ever met.

P.S.

I'd forgotten Gavin was at TIFF for Tsotsi in 2005...I was at TIFF in 2005!!! But arrived Thursday night...long after the BBM folk had gone. My biggest regret was arriving too late to see that film. (I drove in.)

Hey Bobbyanna! Good to see you. It was great spending that day with you, eldest daughter - and Jake and Peter of course. An absolutely magical day and without doubt the most exciting day I've ever had. I remember staying up as late as I could as I didn't want it to end. Thanks for that about my Jake Radar :D It usually works ok - except when I'm in LA where it's off by a couple of hours..

You've been to TIFF almost as much as Jake! Sorry you missed him in 2005. But I'm hoping for more 2007s!

Hello to Zodiac, Get Real, Monica, Pia, Paul and 00:16! Good to see you :D

Okay, in "Elegy," Patricia Clarkson played Ben Kingsley's mistress, not his wife. I like her a lot, and look forward to seeing her in more movies.

As for Penelope Cruz, I was astonished that she looked so much like Anne Hathaway.

Hi there Paul :) Glad to hear you got to see Elegy. I thought Patricia Clarkson was just great in it and I thought she was brave too. Whenever I see Penelope Cruz though I always feel she is playing Penelope Cruz - it's like when I see Tom Cruise, I get the same feeling (not that he's playing Penelope Cruz but you know what I mean... :D). I never get that with actors such as Jake, Heath and Peter.
