Ang Lee: 'We make movies together, we celebrate together. What a life!'

Back in January 2006, Ang Lee's peers in the Directors Guild selected Brokeback Mountain as its film of 2005. And, graciously, Ang said of his competitors: 'We're winners because we're blessed. We're filmmakers. We make movies together, we celebrate together. What a life!' Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger were on hand to see Ang collect his award and now, with great thanks to Xenia for her detective work, here is the video of the three men posing for the cameras.

A month before, in an interview with the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, Jake said: '"I've learned to expect very little from directors," says Gyllenhaal, leaning his lanky frame into an uncomfortable chair and asking if it's OK to light up the last cigarette in a banged-up pack of American Spirits. "What I say now is, `Trust yourself,' because you can't count on your relationship with a director. Ang was great, though, because he would set up situations and then let me and Heath decide what to do within the space Ang created. He put the camera wherever he wanted, but then he gave us a lot of power to create something, so we didn't leave with any regrets."'

And when filming began on Brokeback, away from the cameras, hockey fanatic Ang made sure he dragged Jake along: 'Gyllenhaal has spent most of the month in Calgary so he was caught up in Flames fever. “I’ve been to two games in the Saddledome. “I saw Calgary lose, but I also saw them win in overtime. I never believed I could get so excited over a hockey game.” Gyllenhaal says he owes his new-found fanaticism to Lee. “Ang was the one who persuaded me to go to my first game. I was actually opposed to the idea, but now I’m hooked. Maybe not as hooked as Ang, but hooked nonetheless.”'

In this interview, one of my Brokeback favourites, Jake and Heath discuss what it was like to work with Ang (both the rewards and the challenges) and how the two of them, with Ang, infused the film with chemistry. Jake described the relationship in this way: 'There was a scene where I was herding 500 sheep on my own, it's not in the movie, down this hill at sunset with, like, a horse. I felt so proud of myself, one, that I was actually riding a horse, two, that I was herding 500 sheep. And there were four or five cameras picking it up, and I remember coming down the very end and Ang - I was so excited, and Ang said, "Kind of sexy." That was what he said to me. And I said, "Let's do it again!" He was like, "Let's move on." So my performance, really, I'd describe as 'kind of sexy,' just kind of. And then the next scene we moved onto, I was eager to please. And I think he likes to keep that type of relationship with his actors.'

Jake sums up: 'When you know you have someone who's made movies that deal with pretty, I think, challenging themes, and has tackled them with a kind of universality and a compassion that Ang has, I think that you throw yourself into the arms of that person, and you trust them, and you feel safe, and you gotta just go for it.'

Elsewhere, Jake discussed the cleansing function of Ang's movies: 'If I learned anything it was working with Ang Lee's there's a real benevolence in everything he does. I remember when I saw Sense and Sensibility, my Mom always says that I walked out saying, 'I feel so clean'. I think you walk out of this film feeling devastated in a lot of ways but also feeling a real sense of benevolence, and I think the process of making the film produced that too. I mean, yes, he manipulated us. Yes, in a way he very gently abused us, but I walked out of this experience going there's a real benevolence to this. Like if Heath and I could do this, then it should be okay for the real people who are really doing this to do it.'

And as for the actors, so for the audience.

When has Jake EVER been lanky?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Hello :D That's certainly not a word I would ever use to describe Jake! I can think of a million other more suitable adjectives - although 'Hot' would do if only one were allowed... :)

Anonymous said...

"lanky" doesnt always have the connotation of awkward that erhaps you assume, hello is that you -

for many it just means lean, and long limbed which Jake is or was, although not so much when he is pumped up.

oh, hi! everypeeps! always delighted to revisit Ang/Heath/Jake - thanks WDW!

When Jake is unusually thin, he could be describes as lanky. Right now, when he is pumped up for "Prince of Persia," he is definitely not lanky. I hope he will keep the extra muscle and hair after filming ends, but I realize that it's not my call. Another call that was not mine to make was the casting of "Time-Traveller's wife." I would love to have seen Jake in the role of Henry De Tamble, but Eric Bana got that role instead. :-(

Even before Jake started to 'pump up' he was never lanky - never. Just look at Donnie Darko. Jake has broad shoulders and a good build (his mother obviously gave him a lot of milk to drink as a child).

The definition is 'ungracefully lean – skinny… etc' and no I have never seen Jake be ungraceful even when a little shy.

P.S. I preferred him before his started to 'pump up’. That picture of him walking down the street with Jamie Lee Curtis is just hideous!

It is not just Jake I don't like too much of that kind of thing. I think to myself "Hmm - all that time in the gym, that's one more book he is not reading"

Hi there Pia! 'Lanky' doesn't have good connotations where I am so it's probably one of those words that changes its emphasis as it travels :D I was in the mood for some Brokie love :D

Hi there Paul! I'm totally with you on the bulk and the hair. I want to see more of it. And I have to saay, and get it out of my system, I can't bear Eric Bana. Phew, said it now!

Hi Hello :D Jake has a great build! Shows how we all see pics in differnt ways as I really like him in those Jamie pics, but that's also because of his expressions. One thing I do find is however Jake's body shape changes, I just can't help falling for it.

Thanks for the videos. It made me realize how very long 1:36 minutes is! And it reminded me, yet again, of what we have lost.

Well I have just looked at that pic again and - no - I don't like it; I'm sorry.

Don't get me wrong Jake is a very handsome man, but I would prefer him in a jumper, with a full beard and a small pot belly. He would look really cosy and I could cuddle him after diner.

=)

Hello everyone!

Lovely post, WDW. I love Jake's broad shoulders and I like calling him lean and graceful, not lanky.

There's one thing you don't know about me: I am a huge hockey fan (yes, there are women who love hockey)and so is my mum. And if Jake's first introduction to the game of hockey was at the age of 24, mine was at the age of 4. I'm not joking. I started watching the games in the kindergarten. And while Jake was eating play-doo at this tender age, I was hollering "Goaaaaal!!!!" at the hockey fields and in front of TV screens. I have a friend who is Canadian and Paul is completely crazy about hockey. It's like a religion in this country. I love the thought of Jake at the hockey game. Thank you, WDW, for mentioning it in your post.

I was in IKEA yesterday. Saw a bright yellow wall lamp called GYLLEN, which made me giggle and a man picking up some light bulbs next to me looked at me askance. What does this word mean in Swedish, anyway? Anyone knows? Maggie said herself that it doesn't mean "gold" in Swedish as some people tend to think.

It looks like I'm on my own with that one - lol!!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Anon :) It's a wonderful video - so many thanks to Xenia. It reminds me too....

Nooooo, Hello! That is wrong in so many ways! :D I want Jake cosy but not the woolly jumper, no! I do like his face scruff at the moment, perfect compromise.

Anonymous said...

Scruff, hmm not really but a full beard - yes!

I could sit on his lap and yank on it...

lol!

Oh dear I'm misbehaving again.

I'm off before I say something that gets me in to trouble.

Thanks for the chat.

Hey Zodiac! Posting at the same time :D

I didn't know you were such a hockey fan. I was hoping someone would pick up on that part of the post as I love the idea of Ang taking a reluctant Jake along to a match and Jake falling for the game (mind you, this is a man who watches golf...) I'm so glad you liked that bit! Apparently Ang was often seen at the hockey during BBM.

That's funny about IKEA! Blimey that store gives me mixed feelings... But as far as I know (and despite what Maggie says!) 'Gyllen' means 'Golden', which seems somewhat appropriate :D Thanks for that!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks for the chat, Hello! I love to talk about Jake and how we all see him :D

Zodiac said...

Yep, I do some "manly" things like watching hockey and playing computer games:) I hate stereotypes, anyway.

Golden? Let it be golden then. A golden name for Hollywood's golden boy.

How on earth did Ang become a hockey fan? It must have happened when he came to America. I love that man. I love him for creating Brokeback and being a hockey fan:)

A sharp sting of pain still goes through me when I see a Heath picture. I don't think about it every day or even every week, but whenever I see his picture my heart falls somewhere near my stomach.

All these pics of Heath and Jake together... *sighs - I miss him*

I prefer Jake to be slender, so that's a very "hot" period for my eyes. And he smiled a lot and showed genuine affection/friendship/rapport with Heath - a beautiful time.

Thanks for the Brokie Love in this post, WDW :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I'm not so keen on stereotypes either, Zodiac. I don't like to fit them myself :D It was a surprise to me to hear that Ang is such a hockey fan and I heard it from a few places but good for him! And through it, he fitted right in to Calgary (and took Jake with him!).

I know what you mean about Heath. Some days are bad.

Hello everybody!

I wish I could say I'm back but sadly I'm not. I have and will have a lot of work the following weeks and I don't think I will be able to visit this blog much. Right now I'm sealing a few moments to say hello.

I'm so glad that today's post is about BBM! Thanks a lot for bringing back this happy moment (and thanks to Xenia for her detective work!). I don't know why but I've been missing Heath a lot this last couple of days :O( It doesn't help much that we don't have any Jake movie in sight for a while.

A big hug to all of you and a especially extra one to WDW for your amazing job with this blog.

I hope to come back soon!!

SARA

PS. I had never thought that herding sheep could be "kind of sexy" until now :O) LOL (O:

Hey Winterbird! I'm always happy to share some Brokie Love :D Watching again the expressions between Jake and Heath is such a wonderful thing to do. Jake really did look so beautiful at the DGA awards.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey Sara! Great to see you! Sorry to hear about your busy days - I hope they release you soon. And thank you :) (Jake is one man who can certainly making herding sheep sexy...)

Thanks for going down BBM memory lane. I love their performance. I wonder how they ranked Ang as a director as opposed to other directors both Heath and Jake worked with.

I'll always love BBM.

Thanks WDW
Trekfan

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks Trekfan :D I think Jake has enjoyed some very productive relationships with his directors. For me, I've tended to think Ang, Sam Mendes and Richard Kelly have been particularly influential on Jake (although David Fincher is such a favourite of mine). Maybe Jim Sheridan was another. Hope so. I'll always love BBM too...

I hope you had a lovely birthday *)

Good night, wet dark!
Thanks for posting again on the unforgettable Brokeback Mountain.
Ang Lee turned a story dense and full of nuances into something nice, beautiful and with deep human.

Thanks to the person who found this video. He left me happy and sad at the same time. Jake and Heath were so amazing together.

These images reminded me of a brazilian music. An excerpt:

...You left too soon

I am still here,
With my work and my friends
And I remember you on days like this
A day of rain, a day of sunshine
And I do not know what to say.

Go with the angels! go in peace.
Every day was like afternoon
The discovery of friendship
Until the next time.

...

I remember the afternoon we spent together
It is not always more
I know, what are you all right now
Except that this year
Summer is over
Too soon.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thank you so much for that, Monica :) That song is beautiful.

Interview withNaomi Foner :

Question:
Naomi, tell us about women screenwriters. We're all proud of Emma Thompson...And you too....You were also nominated for an Oscar, right?

Naomi Foner :
I wish there were more of them. Emma's success makes me very proud. The film made me feel like it is possible for a woman's sensibility to be translated to the screen. Yes, I was nominated. My son said that "Sense and Sensibility" made him feel "clean". I thought that was a very interesting.

Good morning everyone! Flippin cold out there today but at least it's sunny. And I look outside and there's a squirrel sitting on my car :/

Morning Monica! That's fab! Thanks so much for that :D

Have a good day everyone!

Thanks to you WDW, for serving us Jake gems everyday! :)

I love the way Jake and Heath interact in this video. My favourite moment is when Heath shifts his head behind Ang's and whispers something (witty and funny I guess) in Jake's direction and Jake smiles widely even before knowing what was that Heath was saying. Priceless.
They were blessed indeed.

Have a great day! :)

Beautiful pictures of happier days for which I thank you.

To the end of his days and beyond I've a feeling Jake will remain utterly Ledgered.

Rest in peace,Heath, li'l darlin'. X

Such beautiful words and pictures. A very special time indeed. Adore Jake and Heath together. Still so poignant to see...

Love how Jake and Ang bonded and seemed to have such a wonderful and genuine affection for each other. I love to think of them at hockey games. :) And the Jake/Ang "kiss" picture never gets old!

I like a leaner Jake but I did think his muscles were gorgeous in the pics of him and Jamie Lee and in Jarhead.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there everyone! What a horrible day I've had :( Good to see you :D

Thank you so much, Xenia for finding this wonderful video :D I love that moment too. Jake's face is so unbelievably expressive in these photos.

Thank you Carol!

Hey Brokie Hearted :D That could well be the Ledgered look. It does me good to see these pictures too.

Hi Get Real! You are so right - I will never tire of that kissing Ang pic! I wonder what Jake thinks of it :D That must have been some party.

Lean or muscly, Jake is just perfect :)

I have to find a wine bottle to stare into...

Anonymous said...

Sorry you had a bad day (((WDW))).

Hope you can now relax and Jake! :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Thanks so much, Get Real *) I'm trying to relax now and think happy Jake thoughts.

OK, I had to ask: What is Jake babbling about here?
"And I think that a soul-mate - the difference between, like, a best friend and a soul-mate is the difference of consummating it or not."
Shouldn't one be gay first to consummate?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

I don't think Jake is babbling here. He's just saying that the difference between best friends and soul mates is that soul mates have consummated that love - and gender is irrelevant. Best friends and soul mates can be any gender they turn out to be. In the case of BBM they were male.
