Jake Gyllenhaal and the kind of actors 'who should be giving advice' - Kevin Spacey, Chris Cooper

Completely accidentally, and rather coincidentally, the air of academia continues to filter through WDW - albeit in a rather foggy mix. The reason for this is that Kevin Spacey, one of the University of Oxford's new visiting profs, is in town.

Yesterday he gave his inaugural lecture on contemporary theatre and the event was a sell-out. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this event (because I was unwilling to sell body parts to get hold of one of those prized tickets), but I heard from a friend who did manage to get in, through fair means or foul, that Kevin moved the attention from himself towards young, upcoming actors in Britain today and that he answered an enormous amount of questions. He was a hit.

So, it would seem churlish not to do a post today on Kevin Spacey and his connection to a certain young actor, whose career most definitely is set on a stellar path - Jake Gyllenhaal. As befits this site, the link is tenuous and remote at best, but I don't like that to stop me.

First off, Kevin Spacey was a presenter at the 2006 MTV movie awards, during which Jake was awarded with Best performance for Jack Twist and shared with Heath the award for Best kiss. Jake posed with a number of stars backstage that evening and my favourite pictures are those with Jake and Kevin Spacey, whom one must admire enormously for his committment to reinvigorating London's much loved Old Vic.

Another connection is a favourite director of Jake's: Sam Mendes. Kevin Spacey won an Oscar for his part in American Beauty, which was directed by Sam. Jake coud have acted with Kevin as he auditioned to get a part in this film, as Ricky Fitts. But, as history tells us, Jake was unlucky in this case - possibly too young - and the role went to Wes Bentley (who also acted with Heath Ledger in Four Feathers). And continuing the connection, American Beauty also starred Chris Cooper, who acted with Jake in October Sky and in Jarhead.

Jake has made no secret that he learns from such (relatively) veteran actors as Chris Cooper. Jake told Backstage: 'The best piece of advice I feel like I got from another actor was [from] Chris Cooper when we were doing October Sky. He said to me, 'Just have no regrets.' And I think that probably gets you through the good times and the bad. When you have no regrets and you're feeling low, you can say, 'You know what? I've given it everything I've got.' I think about that every time I'm in any scene. I would love every director to come to me and say, 'You think you got it? You want to try anything else?' So I could finally have the final say before we move on. I love it when a director asks me if I'm good, because I've had a choice in it. There are no regrets. Again, I got this advice from Chris Cooper, and I think Chris Cooper is the kind of person who should be giving advice. So he's giving advice through me.' I suspect that Jake would feel similarly about Kevin Spacey.

This seems like a good time to post these two videos from a Jarhead red carpet. During the first we can see Jake and hear Sam Mendes discuss Jarhead and, in the second, we have Jake talking about what it was like to work with Sam.

Kevin Spacey is one of my all time favorite actors. I went through a huge Kevin S. phase and I admire his talent and how much he is doing for theatre. I totally loved seeing him and Jake in pics together.

Hi there Get Real! I couldn't pass up focusing on Kevin tonight as I'm such a fan of his - it was a real thrill to know he was in town yesterday (and indeed down the same street as me at one point :)). I do like to see movie stars doing their bit to support regional theatre. Jake and Kevin in a movie together at some point would be something very special indeed:D

Hope you're having a good evening :D

Hey, WDW! :D

That is very cool that Kevin is so close by to you. I would love to see Jake and Kevin in a movie together. I do applaud actors who are well known giving back to the community. They are the ones that get recognition to these theatres/programs, etc. that might not get otherwise.

I am also a huge fan of Sam Mendes and Chris Cooper. Both immense talents and I hope Jake gets to do other movies with them too.

Hi WDW,
You're blog was in my mail tonight, and I'm delighted:)
Kevin Spacey has given some memorable performances. I saw him first in Heartburn, written by Nora Ephron, supposedly about the demise of her marriage to Carl Bernstein. Kevin played a frightening thief up to no good on the Upper West Side of NYC.
He was unbelievably evil, crazy and scary in Seven.
I will never forget his performance in American Beauty; he's a treasure.
Jake+Sam+Chris=great movie watching. Now to add Jake+Kevin for my movie watching pleasure.
xoxoxo

Hi Sass, hope you are doing ok. :)

I love Kevin Spacey too, in American Beauty, Seven, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, 21, to name just a few, and Chris Cooper is one of my all-time faves as well. I loved him in many things too, but Seabiscuit comes to mind right now, and of course October Sky with Jake. I'm glad Jake has the opportunity to work with so many wonderful actors.

Good morning! Indian summer is over, now it's more of an Indian monsoon (slight exaggeration :D It's spitting..).

Hi Get Real! Sorry I missed you last night. It's been a hard week but next week should be easier. I think it's so great for actors to give back, especially for those who aspire to follow them. I think Chris has been quite an influence on Jake.

Morning Sass :D Kevin is definitely a treasure - my favourite role of his was in The Shipping news - one of my favourite films of all time.

Hi there anon :D I do hope Jake continues to be able to grasp those opportunities to work with such great actors. And then I want him to write a book about it :)

Have a great day everyone!

Hi WDW and everyone! :)

I'd be delighted to see Jake in a movie with that wonderful actor that is Kevin Spacey and it could have been so after all, but Wes Bentley got the better of it then.:)

OT : I found the video of Jake and Heath at the DGA I was looking for.
Here but you need a payment account to watch it.
Besides you can watch it Here.
I'm so happy. :)

Have a great day!

Hi everyone

Kevin Spacey is one of my all time favourite actors. I loved him in American Beauty, LA Confidential and David Gale. He can play these really complex characters and reveal them layer by layer.

I would love to have been a fly on the wall at his lecture yesterday.

Hopefully Jake will get to share some screen or stage time with him in the future.

Have a great day.

I forgot about L.A. Confidential! That was great - I never did see Kevin in The Shipping News, but OMG, I just finished reading it, and Annie may be a bit cross with some of her fans, but she's still one hell of a writer. I just fell in love with her characters, very comical in parts, and the magical sense of it - I loved that the editor of the paper, a former fisherman himself, had a sixth sense about those whose boats may have capsized in rough seas, or were lost at sea, and was able to go out and find them. Some of the old expressions and sayings were a hoot, being a New England girl with roots in Nova Scotia, it reminded me of my grandmother who was from there, and the everpresent sea in the background, which it always will be in life, no matter where I go. A fabulously written book. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall at Kevin's lecture at Oxford too. :)

What a day :(

Hey Xenia, you're a star finding that! It's just lovely :D

Hi Carol :D I'd love to have been at the lecture too - sounds like it was overflowing. I forgot to mention K-Pax, one of Mr WDW's favourite films - he can quote so many lines from it ;)

Hi there Anon :D I loved the Shipping News story (my introduction to Annie) and I wasn't disappointed by the film at all - huge vast land and seascapes - just stunning. That area means something to me though I've never been (yet). Quite a few of my family settled out there and I've always wanted to go. I must d it.

Thanks so much for the comments :D

Oh you're welcome! I'll have to see Shipping News, because the book was stunning and left a big impression on me. So did BBM. I haven't read Annie's new book of short stories, but my OH has. My clan came over from Scotland, Isles of Skye and Lewis (I want to go there haven't been yet), to New Scotland, and then to New England. :)

Oh Anon, you must it, it's wonderful :D I've ot read the new short stories either yet. My oH used to work on the Isle of Lewis - it sounds absolutely beautiful. I have a real affection for Skye - partly because of my love for its Talisker single malt! Gorgeous stuff.

Kevin Spacey is definitely very good at what he does. I've seen ten of his movies, and feel that it took great courage for him to make "Henry and June," which was banned in the town I work in. (I went to see it anyway, and it was great!) I feel that he was miscast in "Shipping News," but he gave it everything he had.

And now I want to talk about something that I agree 100% about with Jake: never have any regrets. Regrets lead to feelingsa of guilt, and guilt immobilizes you. In order to move forward with your life, you need to let go of that baggage. I hope Jake will keep telling people not to have any regrets, because the message has to get across to people.
