Jake Gyllenhaal - putting the x into mathematics

With Oxford being a University town of some note, and the new academic year beginning today, it seems inevitable that the play of Proof - or should that be {Proof} - should hit the boards of one of the city's theatres. And sure enough - just as e=mc2 and pie= 3.something - this is the year. From October 24, audiences will be able to relive the story of Robert, Catherine, Claire and Hal every night for a week.

Now that Oxford has more students than ants, it seems a good time to look at Jake Gyllenhaal's role as the mathematically-gifted Hal, who had the misfortune to fall for the recently bereaved and mathematically-inscrutable Catherine. Gwyneth Paltrow was never quite so sure that Jake was the right choice: '"Of course, it's a little far-fetched that Jake Gyllenhaal is ..." A friendless weirdo too? "Yeah. But it's a movie. Harvey Weinstein was very keen that Jake be the guy. He was not really up for the quirky thing. And he was paying, so."' But there were perks to having Jake as a co-star.

Reviews also pointed out that Jake may be too much of a hunk to be a believable mathematical genius ('Jake Gyllenhaal seems a little too hunky for a math geek — but he is, after all, Jake Gyllenhaal; what're you gonna do?'). As Jake himself said: 'I play a mathematician, which is ridiculous because I am horrible at math'.

Jake had nothing but praise for Gwyneth: 'When you work with certain actors, when you work with Heath, you don't always really know what he's going to deliver. With Gwyneth it's funny. She'll do three or four takes and they'll all be brilliant and will be done with her coverage. And I've never really worked with an actor like that before, ever. And I just saw her recently after not seeing her for a year... and she's just so sweet... For a person who has been bombarded with so much at such a young age, she's such a classy person.' Before going on to say: 'My math teacher would be, and I think is, devastated and hurt that I played that role in a movie.' Just how bad was Jake at mathematics?

Jake impressed director John Madden from the beginning: He 'recalls that Madden "had auditioned a lot of people for Proof and he told me, ‘I’m trying to find someone like you, but older. And now, I realize—I think you can do it. Will you fly to London and audition? I said, ‘Sure.’ In London, Paltrow and Madden gave him his “sides” from a crucial scene and, as Madden recalls, “he nailed it. He was free with us, and as soon as we finished reading one very long scene he wanted to go back and read it again—and different things came out. So his passport into the movie was already assured.”'

'“I always felt a little behind,” recalls Gyllenhaal. “Because they had done it onstage, and I was somewhat in awe of the talent—which worked perfectly in the role. And I’m trying to dust off things that they had already dusted off, then passed by or refined. I’m still trying to dust them off, and they’re going, ‘No, there’s no dust on that,’ you know?” Madden was impressed that the young actor came to the shoot with his part, as a young mathematician who’s trying to rescue the legacy of Paltrow’s brilliantly deranged mathematician father, flawlessly memorized, and apparently no longer entirely in awe. “Jake fought his own—um, he took me to task over some of the writing and some of the beats in a very good, very assured way that was particular to his character’s point of view.”'

Here you can see a video showing clips from the making of Proof, as well as an interview with Gwyneth in which she discusses the not altogether pleasant experience of filming Proof (sorry {Proof}). But when all's said and done, it's not everyday that a young actor has the opportunity to work with an actor such as Sir Antony Hopkins.

I, personally, would never learn ANYTHING in Harold Dobbs'( was it Dobbs?)classes. Talk about distraction. I cannot imagine having a teacher who is so hot. My university professors never looked like that. They were genuine geeks:)One of them was quite cute and girls did develop a little crash on him over the term, but Jake? Explaining things to me with his sweet, sweet voice? I would need many hours of personal tuition from him.

Hi there Zodiac! Imagine sitting in a class in front of Hsl - not a word would get past my ears. But yes, he would need to explain the simplest things for hours... sigh. I also like that Jake shares my complete inability for all things mathematical :D Hope you're having a good evening :)

All the words would get past my ears, because I'd be too busy staring at him and counting his eyelashes:)

I was quite good at algebra, but I hated geometry.

Wow. Must be Proof day. I spent the entire morning and afternoon attending (mostly boring) meetings and what picture should turn up during one the media presentations but the one of Harold Dobbs kissing Katherine! Coinkidink? For what it's worth, I earned an Associate degree in physics. None of my instructors looked like Jake. I'm considering requesting a refund.

Good night, Wet Dark!

Good night, Wet Dark!

I love this movie.
One of the best performances of Gwynett Paltrow. She did not show great performances after the Oscar, but she showed maturity in this movie.
Gwynett and Jake had a great chemistry together.

Jake was a terrible student in mathematics? I was also a terrible student in mathematics! Hehehe

Id you give Gwynneth a role that suits her, she goes to town with it. I'm happy to see good things being said about her work. :-) If they do many sequels to "Iron Man," she will get more work. Unless they killed her off in the first one. I don't remember that happening, but I see so many movies that I tend to forget major plot points... (I'm hoping that there's a scientist in Gotham City who can clone Rachel Dawes.)

I disagree with those who think Jake is too much of a hunk to play a math teacher. Jake makes himself seem like an uncoordinated klutz who is sure to be an absentminded professor sooner rather than later. He wanders through "Proof" looking as if he's often lost in thought. I personally don't think what his math competence is. Antony Hopkins has probably never eaten a single person, yet he was celebrated for playing Hannibal Lecter. Gwynneth did not have to be a fine poet in order to play Sylvia Plath. So, Jake's actual math skills are irrelevant.

Good morning everyone! Is it Friday yet...?

Hi Zodiac! Maybe counting Jake's eyelashes would be a good introduction to mathematical principles?

Hey JoeAnn! Blimey! A presentation featuring a Jake Gyllenhaal kiss - that's amazing.

Morning Monica :D Mathematics is hugely overrated :D

Hi there Paul! I think Pepper Potts survived Iron Man - I spent much of that movie fascinated by her shoes. I do agree that Jake's mathematical ability doesn't affect his powers to play a mathematical expert but it is encouraging to know that I'm not alone in my ineptitude in the subject. I used to be good at maths and then something happened and all my maths braincells expired.

Antony Hopkins doesn't eat people?

have a great day everyone :D

I think that there's no physical law (not yet) that denies the possibility that a beautiful, sexy, athletic mathematician like Hal could actually exist, but probabilities you can meet one of them approach to zero I'm afraid.;)

On a more serious note I think that Jake did his best to portrait a sweet, self-confident, intelligent man who is not afraid to fall in love with a woman who's better than him in what he probably cares most. And he did a good job.
The fact that he's good-looking doesn't hurt at all to me.:)

Thanks WDW for refreshing Proof memories and a good day to everyone!:)

Hi there Xenia! I know I've not met one such as Hal - and probably best not to hold my breath :D Jake was so lovely in Proof and I think he did an excellent job with what he was given.

Hope you're having a good day - I'm ready to lie down in a darkened room...

Hi, WDW!!!! Really enjoyed reading the comments by Jake about his work in PROOF. Don't recall seeing them before. But I agree wholeheartedly about the probability of finding a professor like Harold Dobbs! ;)

It would be easy to be intimidated working with Anthony Hopkins and Gwyneth Paltrow. Then add the fact she and John Madden have worked together before, and she has done the stage play, so I was very glad to see here, that Madden talked about Jake asserting himself with this role in developing the cahracter. (Hope Davis is a marvelous character actress, too.)

We've had spectacular weather for the past four days, but today, it is windy, rainy and there is a edge of chill coming round! Be well!!! (I'm a Capricorn, too WDW! January 3rd. I forget the year!)

Hi Bobbyanna :D It must've been very intimidating for young Jake, I hope he took no nonsense!

The weather here is still lovely and very unseasonable - the leaves are all reds and yellows and yet the sun is shining andit's warm. But rain on the way :( Ahhh, a feelow capricorn :D Have a good night!
