Jake: 'I would do a play at school and look into the audience and see the reaction on everyone's face, and that's what I love'

Today's been a busy day, completed by attending a public lecture by a visiting American prof. It, therefore, seems apropos to take a look at Jake 'Student' Gyllenhaal, who, no doubt, took studying to new sexy and hot levels, never seen before and never to be seen again.

One unlucky side effect of being a gorgeous young actor is that you not only attend school/college in real life, you then have to do it again for the cameras. As Jake once said: 'I tend to play troubled kids'. No wonder he's now enjoying playing chest-baring princes of Persia. As Jake told the Guardian: 'As a young actor, you're often asked to play a typical clichéd teenager... But I have this objective idea that I'm not going to do some stupid high-school movie, and if it is a high school movie then I'm going to get in the ambitious car, rather than the one that has its destination marked out for it.'

Jake's acting began in school, quite apart from his childhood success in City Slickers. It is reported that 'While still in school, Jake took acting lessons, and appeared in school plays, including playing the role of Fagan in Oliver Twist in second grade. While attending Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood it is rumored that he was in the choir.' We know from Conan O'Brien, that Jake was also a whizz at modern dance.

Jake told Boyfriend magazine: 'I remember when I was little that I loved acting coz I wanted the attention! Then I would do a play at school and look into the audience and see the reaction on everyone's face, and that's what I love. Now it's become more than that.'

Not surprisingly, if you can act the role of a kid at school, you don't actually want to be at school in real life: 'Regardless of the influence of these incredible filmmakers, my parents forced me to stay in school, much to my dismay at the time. At the end of high school they allowed me to get an agent and start auditioning professionally. So it all came about from there. Since I had already made somewhat of an impression on the film industry as a young kid, people had faith in me and took me on.'

When Jake chose to do Bubble Boy, some people (who obviously can't appreciate good humour, fine acting and atrocious hair when they see it) questioned Jake's choice. Jake had no doubts why he did it - Daily News 2002: '`The question comes,'' says Gyllenhaal, almost with a sigh. ``Honestly, I didn't want to go back to school. I wanted to work. I did that movie because it was a comedy and such a wacky character. For me, it's about the character, obviously.''

But, while Jake was at school (Knightridder 2001), 'he caught the acting bug in ninth grade. He came down with a bad case of acting flu while performing in a skit. He and his friends were singing Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" when he realized he wanted to be a professional actor... Jake followed his sister to Columbia University in New York, but unlike her, he did not graduate. He says his decision to leave school had nothing to do with his grades. "Actually, my grades were pretty good, except for the `F' I got in my class on dinosaurs. That was the hardest class I ever took."' Two points here - what has Bohemian Rhapsody got to do with acting and how can anyone not enjoy studying dinosaurs? (Did Jake not have dinosaur wallpaper as a kid, as I did?)

Jake told the same source: '"It was hard for my parents to accept my decision at first," the 20-year-old actor said in his Los Angeles hotel suite. "After all, my sister (actress Maggie Gyllenhaal) had just graduated from Columbia, and they were so proud of her. But my sophomore year was a tough year for me, both emotionally and intellectually. I felt slightly schizophrenic because I was trying to live a regular college life, but I also wanted to be creative. I had no creative outlet at school, so I was thinking a lot about acting. It was difficult to juggle classes with the constant phone calls from agents offering me film roles. I was so confused, but eventually I knew I had to make a decision. And I believe I made the right choice.'

But education's loss is our gain, although, back in the days of October Sky, Jake was at pains to stress that he did enjoy school (Soundbites): 'This past year I'm sort of focusing on school more. And the movie itself and its emphasis on the importance of school. It made me want to go back. And I think it's so important to get an education, so to inform your work, and interpret the text so that you can understand the subtext and the underlining meaning of the text, you know... I just believe that it's so important. At the same time focusing on school, not trying to be pulled in by my passion... I mean it's really hard to be sitting here and doing this to be talking about something you love more than anything in your life and also knowing... AND I love school so much... and know that I need that so that hopefully I can... again hopefully... have a good career.' And he told the Guardian then: 'I wanted to get back to what people my own age were doing, to grow up a bit in real life.'

But in the end 'I had gone to school to be intellectual and cerebral... but there isn't an acting program at my college, and I'm happier when I'm acting. I don't want to be seen as an icon for college dropouts.'

As for college life, there is every chance that Jake's fridge had green slime growing in it: '"I'm majoring in Eastern Religions, but I have to take the [required] curriculum first, so at this point I'm taking a lot of English classes, modern poetry, and English Literature." Also, "I find as a student I almost never eat." However, in an interview at college, Jake was found eating Doritos, and drinking berry Snapple. Maybe not exactly nutritious, but still a good snack!' What on earth is a berry Snapple? The mind boggles.

Hi there everyone! Sorry about the irritation on WDW tonight. I've reset the post - with apologies to Shy Anon, Monica, Uli and Dr Pepper for their lost and valued comments. Comments will be moderated tonight :D Have a good evening everyone!

Snapple is a brand of iced tea and fruit drinks owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group and based in Rye Brook, New York. The drinks are sold in glass bottles, soda-style cans, and plastic bottles. Snapple was founded by Hyman Golden, Arnold Greenberg and Leonard Marsh in Valley Stream, New York on Long Island in 1972. The word "Snapple" was introduced in the early 1980s and is derived from a carbonated apple juice.[1] Currently, there are four different types of Snapple: Tea (Diet and Regular), Juice drinks, Lemonade as well as their own brand of bottled water.

Snapple's brand slogan is "Made from the best stuff on Earth."

Déjàvu? ;) I'm sorry, too, WDW :-/

If Bubbleboy was in some way the reason for Jake dropping out of college, I think he made the right decision! It's such a sweet and funny movie - and Jake is perfect for it! ;)

It's weird to think that he is a drop out, cause in general I would say it is always better to have a graduation and a completed education for a job, but there are always exceptions to the rule. I think Jake is happy with his decision! He has obviously found his profession - and he is good at it. And if one day he is not happy with it anymore, I am sure he will find a way to do something different that will make him just as happy... :)

Not sure if I would be so happy then, though! I would most certainly miss him... If he feels like taking up cooking one day, I might have to move to the US then, in order to not completely loose sight of him... Just joking ;)

Hugs
Uli

Thanks Dr Pepper! This isn't a drink I've ever heard of. Sounds good to me :D Thanks for commenting :)

Hi there Uli! I love Bubble Boy and I'm really pleased Jake made it - I think Jake's been spot on with his decisions. I've never thought of Jake as a drop out because he's had every benefit going for him and has taken advantage of them all. Mind you, I work in higher education so I'm under no illusions!

Yes, if Jake left acting to run a restaurant we'd have to move and we'd get very fat!

if I'd had the career options Jake had, I would have dropped out too :D.

Thanks for the comprehensive Snapple info., Dr P

Me too Rubes - and then we could drink Snapple too :D

My worthless theory is that Jake fooled around in high school and had poor grades and his parents were worried and had him apply to a univ. where they had connections (Naomi's ex) Columbia was a fool choice for Jake.

This is probably my theory because that's kind of what happened to me, took me awhile to find a school where I thrived.

Im not sure he's happy with his decision 'cause he kids around about it. You can be smart enough, and even very smart, and not know it.

Goin' to see Jas Bond tonight. YAY!

Hi Pia! Enjoy Bond, I loved it :D

Evening everyone

Great choice of photographs as always tonight WDW.

Jake certainly isn't your average college drop out. Fair play to him for following his dreams. He's made really clever choices in the movies he's taken on so far.

I must watch Bubble Boy again with Jake's commentary. I haven't seen it in so long.

Have a great evening:)

Hi Carol! I'm glad you like the pics - it seems I liked one so much I posted it twice... I mut see Bubble Boy again soon, too. Have a good night :D

That's true...
On the other hand it could also be that he - for himself - feels it was the right decision, cause acting was and is what he really wants to do (at least for now), but that he also feels some pressure and the expectations from the outside, cause people in general expect you to graduate and finish college and these expectations make him question his decision once in a while...
I guess we will never know...
:)

Jake's commentary during the Underoos-wearing wedding scene in Bubble Boy always has me ROFL. "That is NOT me!"

I love pink lemonade Snapple! Although it's loaded with sugar... I guess Jake is not drinking it these days, unless he really wants to get fat and be happy :P

may I just say that although I don't watch "Proof" much, I am always struck by how handsome he looked in that film.

good night everyone.

Night everyone! JoeAnn, I love that bit :D And what lovely undies... And hugs to Uli and Winterbird :D

I been to school. It was hard I had to learn a new language and I didn't understand what they wanted me to do but I went along and did my lab work with Daddy helping. Daddy got smarter too. Pretty sure I graduated, the papers around here somewheres....or maybe I chewed it up. I miss school I got to eat all the time during lab. Thats all it was, lab work then a snack, another lab problem then eat again over and over again it was great. Grrr maybe I go back for a Masters.

WDW I sniffed and licked Snapple once but they don't have beef flavor. Meh. Snapple

o my, Gemma is SO young! god bless her!

Iheart Judi Dench and also Daniel Craig. well done, people . . .

Anna said...

Yes, they are wonderful. And the butt inside them is very, very nice. ;-D

I was going to pull my brain together and go for another meaningful comment, but I just can't.

I love that line early in Bubble Boy, where he's just gotten out of his house. He's running down the street and steps in something, and is so happy when he realizes it's DOG POO!!! Go Jimmy!!!! ;-)

Anna said...

LOL! This waiting for moderation makes it interesting to read comments.

When I said "they are wonderful. and the butt inside them..." above, I wasn't talking about James Bond actors, but Jimmy Livingston undies... ;-D

Good morning everyone!

Hi Atticus :D I like the sound of that course. I bet your master's proud of you - he should seek out some beef snapple... er, yum...

Morning Pia! Glad you liked Bond. And Gemma, Gemma is just so beautiful :D

Hi Anna! Sometimes it's best to just sit back and enjoy the view - and that is some view of Jimmy. I love the dog poo line! so many good lines :D

Have a great day everyone!

Good morning, wet dark!
I hope it's true:
IMDB
USA 2009
Denmark 27 February 2009
UK 27 February 2009
France 4 March 2009

:)

Hi Monica! Let's hope it's true but I do wonder... When they removed the December release date for the US they left the other release dates as they were so who knows. I remember when the Feb GB date went up I was disappointed it was so late, but now it could be a good thing!

Hope everyone's having a good day!

Thanks for another lovely post, WDW.:)
Thinking about Jake either as a schooolboy or as a teacher makes me want to go back to school where such a gorgeous sight was nowhere to be seen.

BTW, about the IMDB Brothers release dates, isn't Brothers screening at Cannes supposed to be a Premiere? At least for Europe?
If it is so I doubt there will be release dates before Cannes. Just saying...

Have a good day WDW and everyone.:)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi there Xenia! I know, i wouldn't be surprised if some change, if the film does premiere at Cannes. Although it's worth remembering that I think Cannes only has to be the French premiere. Zodiac had been out elsewhere before Cannes. But I suppose we should know something within the next couple of months. I think it's about time we got some news! Have a good day - getting dark here now, already... :(

When I was in college, I did a *lot* of acting and singing. What happened with Jake, I think, is that he was in the wrong college. I wish he could have finished college, but I don't regret the movies he made during the years he would otherwise have been a student.

Maggie went to the same school and graduated. She wasn't in any movies in college, was she? Is Jake more "creative" that he needed to act more than her? It looks like Jake left Columbia after Maggie graduated so maybe its more about competition or loneliness than the wrong school IMO.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hey there Paul :D I agree - wrong college. Maybe Jake should have stayed closer to his moviemaking home of LA?

Hi Dean :D Thanks for the comment, which is very interesting. I'd not thought about that before - that Maggie waited until after she graduated, but Jake couldn't. Of course, it could be that Jake had more temptations than Maggie - more role offers etc. But it's always hard for a younger sibling to follow in the elder's footsteps.

That really is interesting that when Jake left Maggie had gone. It does seem to ring with loneliness and competitiveness, plus Jake was far from home, whereas Maggie is a natural New Yorker.

I sense a restlessness about Jake.
This is pure risktaking, and it has stood him in good stead since then. I am not at all worried about him, because he knows what he wants, and he is organized and self-disciplined enough to get it. Sure, I am sure that the rest of his family wishes he had finished college, but there are millions of people who go back to college later in life to finish. I had an uncle who did it in his 60s. He left college just oine course shy of what he needed. He went back and finished...

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Paul! I do agree - Jake was right, in my opinion, to take the risk and grab the chances. I have family members who completed their education later on, after they had achieved some other goals. There's no hurry and I do believe Jake did the right thing - so many opportunities :D

I don't see why Jake would go back to College. He will never ever need a regular job. He knows (and so do we) acting is what he's going to do for the rest of his days. He's got enough money, he's not a party guy, he won't do drugs for he's a healthy man, so I don't see how he'd blow his money or his career.

As for learning, it's the easiest part, since he can research or pay someone to teach him what he thinks he needs.
He's cool.
