Brokeback continues to provoke debate, and Maggie and Peter out and about with the stars

The decision of RAI, the state broadcasting company of Italy, to broadcast Brokeback Mountain on Monday night, at 10.45pm, minus the sex and kissing scenes between Jack and Ennis, has caused a furore that could result in a parliamentary debate. Whether it was a mistake (the channel insist the full version will be broadcast soon) or whether it was due to Vatican pressure, may not be determined, but the excuse that the channel did not have a full copy of the movie seems a little lame. The heterosexual love scene was left intact.

Nevertheless, the whole affair has caused a debate, something that has followed Brokeback since its very beginnings and this can only be for the ultimate good. I'm reminded of that famous line from the film, broadcast by a US station, 'Jack Frederick Twist'.

Maggie and Peter in NYC

Maggie has been out and about again, this time at Tuesday's party for Ray-Ban’s re-released Clubmaster frames. It is hoped that not too many celebrities were damaged during the course of the evening (sunglasses were a compulsory accessory). Maggie is so good at winter chic.

Deep breaths for this section of the post... As a stalwart Trekkie of many years' standing I was thrilled to see this picture of our Peter alongside that Voyager legend Kate Mulgrew, Captain Kathryn Janeway herself. The event was Monday's Gypsy of the Year competition in NYC, and the planets were perfectly aligned to seat Peter and Kate next to each other.

And finally, I need to see this picture again, I hope you don't mind...

Includes pictures from IHJ and links.

HI WDW how is Disney treating you? I know you won't want to leave, EVER! I know I sure didn't when I was down there.

Anyway I'd heard about this bruhaha over what Italian TV did to BBM. They should be ashamed of themselves. At least here in the states when it was shown on Bravo (that was after it was shown on HBO) they showed those scenes but some from a different pov. But they were there.

I thought Europe was alot more progressive when it came to sex, any kind of sex.

I hope they fix this major oversight. BBM has to be seen in it's entirety with NOTHING left out. Those two wonderful, loveable men need to be seen.

Hi there Sweetpea :D Disney's treating me good! I'm not looking forward to getting back to the cold, that's for sure. Had a lovely day at MGM Studios and found it's been renamed Hollywood Studios and the Tower of Terror is now the Hollywood Tower Hotel! Unbelievable...

I suppose each country is treating BBM in its own way. And of course Europe's a big place - I was very pleased that Britain showed it with no changes at all. And I think next time it shows in Italy it will be in its entirety. The debate three years on is such a good thing. People are all still thinking about what Brokeback means. How amazing :D

Hope everyone has a good night/morning :D

Good morning! I don't have much to say, but I cannot not comment when my word is 'chuzzle'...
I would love to chuzzle Jake! ;D

Unbelievable that they showed a mutilated version of BBM in Italy... That's just so sick, it makes me sad!

I hope you are still enjoying your trip, WDW!
Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone... Xenia and I have been discussing this thing these days, obviously and unfortunately.. We can't help but being upset and ashamed of how certain things go in our country, I'm ...speechless I'd say, disappointed..
I was glad they finally decided to show BBM on tv, quite surprised actually, thought they never would knowing this diffused homophobia in the country (the Church doesn't help in this way either)...and a little disappointed for the movie being shown at 11 p.m...why "so late"? while at 9 p.m you get to see movies full of violence and nonsense, or stupid reality shows with idiots insulting each other all the time... but a beautiful love story involving two men, no. That's offensive. That's a late night thing.
But when I realized there were missing scenes (without which btw the movie was incomprehensible..) I switched the tv off...
That was not Brokeback Mountain, no matter what they say, that was not it.

Hi WDW and everyone, very interesting post today.

Italian state-owned television is indefendible and I was furious as all of you to watch one of my dearest movies, of all movies in the world, mutilated and Jake, who I came here for in the first place, and Heath's memory both so crudely offended.

But, you know Sweetpea, I am Italian I don't think I should be ashamed for a decision I didn't make and never would, neither if I wasn't so Brokeback-bewitched like I am, hopelessly.
And don't forget that it's because of some Italian citizens (not just gay people) protests that the film will be broadcasted with no cuts as soon as possible.
Our contry is suffering under the burden of an ignorant and arrogant government and the not-exactly- subtle Vatican power-that-be. But Italians are better than their politicians and administrators, well, most of them. :)

I don't mind THAT picture at all. It's my new desktop. :)

Have a good day everyone. :)

Sorry for double posting...:)
*waves to Good Girl*

Well said my friend, I should have switched the TV off too...:/

I don't understand... if they (the TV stations) are so scared of the gay love scenes, why don't they just NOT show the film at all? Whatever excuse they come up with, it's always lame!

I think Ang Lee should insist all TV screenings need to be the full version! After all, he refused to back down for "Lust, Caution" (well, except in China, where there's no reasoning)

It's especially stupid that it happens in Italy - a country where a porn star was once a senator! Are we going backward or what? *fuming*

oh well.

Funny enough... last night I had an urge and watched all the love scenes of Brokeback on youtube. Personally, I think the most intimate scene is when they lay in bed together in the Siesta Motel... :)

P.S. that's some beard on Peter!

Good morning everyone! Today is making up for beautiful yesterday - rain, rain, rain and more rain. And apparently it just snowed in New orleans!

Morning Uli :D How come you get chuzzle and I get sanestr? Having a lovely week, thanks! Hope it's going ok with you :)

So good to see Good Girl and Xenia, who had to endure the BBM chopping. And Xenia, thanks for clarifying that this was a decision of the stations and absolutely nothing to do with the viewers - I mean this is Italy, a place with a long, long history of passion :D And the immediate uproar just shows how this went against the feeling of the people. I doubt all countries would feel so strongly.

But apart from all that, good to see you and waves to Good Girl and Xenia :D

Hi Winterbird! I was wondering that, too. Why show it at all? I should have brought Brokeback with me.

Have a good day everyone!

Thank you for your warm welcome WDW :D *waves back*

Actually that's what i thought myself, why showing the movie with cuts, don't show it at all if you don't like it.. I guess I have to thank Xenia too *waves back!* for underlining how viewers are not involved and definitely not happy with such a choice either!
Fortunately I have my DVD and I can re-watch it as many times I want :) And the cut scenes are the ones I usually watch the most!

(is the word thing about the "verification word" on the page? ... if it is so, I have "surambar", it sounds so PoP to me :D)

Good afternoon!

As my word today is "yessers" and I don't know what the heck it means, I can assume it's a big YES to those who are yessers. Since I'm in a YES mood, I'm a "yesser" so I can say what I think today. Ha!

And I think...it's so funny that we can see blood and corruption, but we can't see sex. Oh no, sorry...we can see heterosexual sex too, but no Jake/Heath sex. Take your religious family members off the room!
That says a lot about these butchers. I like to think that a subject can only bother the ones who try to hide their own secret wishes...it makes me laugh in secret when I know I'm calling all those guys "frustrated gays in disguise".

Oh...how mean I am!

I don't mind that picture, WDW. You can promote "that picture month" and I'd be happy.

Weather check: I only think in Celsius, but my conversion widget rules! And its free.
So, 24ºC (75ºF) today. Cloudy.

Oh...double post again!
I've never noticed Heath's tattoo was showing in the kiss scene.
"Where are the make up guys? Are you trying to ruin Ang's career?"

Since we're talking about Jake and Heath, now might be a good time to mention that the Golden Globe nominations have come out. Heath is nominated in the supporting actor category for his Joker role in "The Dark Knight."

Saw Dark Knight for first time last night. glad I didnt see it in IMAX - pretty rough! but I liked the script and story.

Heath is brilliant.

today's word is "gaterly" and Im not even in Florida, the 'gater capital of the USA - !

take care, WDW sweetie!

ice storm coming down the pike.

I'm glad that Brokeback will be shown in its entirely in Italy now, and that good sense prevailed! :)

I just had to comment, my word verification is "Skyrina" so now I won't have to post as an anon anymore, that sounds like a great name - part Brokeback, Part Chekov.

Glad you're having a wonderful time at Disney, WDW!

I love our new pic, but my once and future desktop will always be Jack in blue denim sitting on the back of his truck, long legs outstretched.

Heath is brilliant in TDK, Pia, isn't he. :)

Hi there everyone! Just got back after a very wet day at Disney - Donald Duck would've been happy. My poncho was so fetching...

Hi Good Girl! Thanks for the wave. Strange, isn't it, those are the scenes I've watched rather a lot too!

Yesser Monica O :D Censorship always carries an agenda and they seem to have little understanding of human nature or the heart for that matter. I just wish people could be treated like grownups (she says, at Disney World :D). I always notice Heath's tattoo in BBM - it bugged me originally, now it doesn't. I'm surprised they didn't do anything about it - or the dodginess of Jake's moustache for that matter. Enjoy that lovely warmth :)

Hi Paul! Thanks very much for the Globes news. I can see it could be quite an emotional awards season for us all.

Hey Pia! Glad you enjoyed the film. I couldn't have stomached it at the IMAX either. Heath is terrifying and brilliant in it - love the way he delivers some of those lines, especially the ones to Maggie.

I've been watching the weather in the NE on the Weather Channel and it looks really bad - hope you're warm and cosy at home *)

Hey Skyrina! Good to meet you and thanks for taking a name - you will always remind me of my holiday now and that's a good thing! Oh yes, I love that picture too :)

My word is doerc. Charming...

Hope everyone's having/had a good evening!
