Shop for Jake part 1 - Handy in the kitchen

Whoever invented late night shopping on Thursday for Christmas shoppers has just lost themselves their place on my Christmas card list. However, the congestion on the roads, in the streets, on the pavements and in the shops has reminded me that the countdown is on - Jake Gyllenhaal's birthday is fast approaching and I'm sure you are all keeping your eyes open for that special gift.

So what to buy the man who wants for nothing? Judging by all the articles in which Jake has discussed his love of cooking, it is very possible that his kitchen is awash with every known gadget and widget, enabling Jake to prepare and cook each ingredient in 963 varied ways. Cooking magazines and books no doubt fill the shelves, the walls will be hung with pans and onions and herbs will grow in the windowboxes. Admittedly, all of these items will have been a little forlorn this year with Jake so long gone from home, but that could soon be at an end.

It seems appropriate that the first of the season's Shop for Jake posts should focus on Jake's love for cooking. According to Maggie: '"My brother is actually an astonishing cook," sister Maggie Gyllenhaal says. "I'm a pretty good cook – I'm like the lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper kind of cook. He took it to the next level. My brother makes roast beef in a béchamel sauce. When I'm in L.A. I stay with him and he cooks major meals."

I must include the rest of the little feature: 'But even when Jake's taking care of her, Maggie can't help herself from being the protective older sister. "I really lost it when they show him getting beaten up (in Brokeback Mountain)," she told us at New York City's Spotted Pig restaurant, where she was celebrating Reebok's "I Am What I Am" campaign (she's a spokesperson). "He's my brother so maybe I felt it even more acutely. I thought, 'Why hurt him? What has he done?'"'

OK! magazine this week have produced a pictorial guide to shopping for Jake, although they have sadly neglected Jake's abiding loyalty to Nike.

Of course, you could always get Jake a DVD.

And when you have bought the perfect gift for Jake, Maggie may be full of wrapping tips. In these pictures, we see Maggie last night (3 December) at the launch of the Duracel 2008 'Help Power A Smile' Campaign at the Children's Museum of Manhattan in New York.

How do they know which shaving cream he uses??? Mind boggles. Tabloid people, make yourself more believable, puhleeese.

Sorry, WDW, got carried away.

*waves*

I hope he gets something nice and warm and cuddly. A guinea pig, perhaps?

It's a bad day today for me. Not because of the weather (it's really warm again)but I had a major argument today with my mom in the morning and in the evening I slapped myself in the face with a stretchy tape in a step aerobics class. Accidentally, of course. It hurt. A lot.

This battery thing Maggie has taken part in, what is it exactly?

Hey Zodiac! Waves back! I just love how they can say with such certainty what shaving cream Jake uses! Absolute rot!! Funny though...

Guinea pigs are horrible. One of my earliest memories is of having a guinea pig hanging off my finger by its teeth :(

Sorry to hear about your bad day :( I recommend lying in front of the TV watching a Jake DVD instead of aerobics...

The Duracell charity thing is all about providing gifts and batteries for children in hospital, to make them smile, I believe. Maggie is one of its ambassadors. I did a post on it a few weeks ago I think.

My word is inelop. I think I saw one of those when I was in Africa years ago.

Sorry about your guinea pig accident,WDW. I had hamsters when I was little.I don't remember if they ate themsleves (like Jake's did)but once two of them escaped from the cage and got into the wardrobe and ate two swimming costumes. They gently nibbled on them all over. We found them in a sofa later. Mom was furious.

I am a bad fan. I haven't watched a Jake's DVD for around 3 weeks. Something like that.

So, what would you give him? :-)

My word is "grashion". I guess, it's a combination of "grace" and "fashion".

Those hamsters sound frisky, Zodiac. I had a hamster called Runt - and it was. My friend had gerbils and they ate each other so I learned to stick with fish and stick insects (although not in the same container).

I would give Jake a flower, because I'm soppy.

I think you should watch a Jake DVD as soon as possible :D My word is bascha, like it :D

I'd give Jake a birthday kiss... but that's too easy, isn't it?

Since Jake is a self-confessed neat-freak, I wonder if his cookbooks are in alphabetical order or by genre? :P

I never had guinea pig or hamster as pet... but I had dogs and once I had a bunny, but my sister killed it by accident - cos she thought it would be nice to bathe it, the poor bunny had a cardiac arrest...

Hey Winterbird! The kiss siunds good... OMG the boor rabbit! Reminds me of the fish I had that someone accidentally poisoned with a wotsit (crisp). I wouldn't be surprised if the cookbooks are carefully organised. I would love to see Jake's kitchen (etc)! Have a good night :D

Jake is in Cosmo too! He is 'Phwaor' in his santa hat from Jarhead. And thats it. I don't understand what the media is for these days. They are either muzzled or 'citizen journalists' (mealy mouthed way of talking about reality tv). Never reporting on Jake, never reporting on our disappearing democracy...I'd better stop. Just wanted to share the Cosmo info with you. Oh, and I hate hamsters. Thats tersig (my word). TD.

Hi TD! Hamsters are definitely tersig in my book :D Oh, the media... Thanks so much for the Cosmo news. I'll look out for that one :D

I dislike gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs quite a bit and DENSUM.

Horrible fat guinia pig from my daughter's school spent Christmas vacation with us, squealed horribly day and night. In Peru these are a tasty dish. Favorite gerbil story is a mother who put out poison for mice and then BY MISTAKE (right!)one night FORGOT to close the door of the gerbil cage.

a friend swore it was Maggie G shopping at a local foodie heaven. it's possible.

present for jake: hmmm I know he likes cashmere socks but he probably has a drawerful. also plenty of designer scarves. I think a pair of silk pajamas. or perhaps an elegant japanese kimona.

Densum is almost dim sum, of which I'd LIKE SUM.

Hi, everbody! Hope you are all warm and cuddled.

Hi Pia! I dislike small rodenty things quite a bit myself. I much prefer exchanging glances with an intelligent fish... I helped look after goslings when I was at school, they were fun. Hmm, I do like the idea of a kimono :D Have a warm, cuddly evening too!

Hi WDW! Yes no ones like me. You are so nice and kind let me give you a kiss on the cheek. *lick* I haven't had gerbil, hamster, or guinea pig pet yet but theres tons of wild opossums and squirrells and mice (rats too sshh) and rabbits and coyotes outside. its fun to watch who eats who."Survivor" in my yard every day.

I know what you can get Daddy for the perfect gift. He has almost eveything in his kitchen except a well stocked floor. Whats missing is crumbs, pieces of meat, grease, bread, cheese, whip cream, liver, broth, cooked pasta, chicken skin, cake, popcorn, sauces, all the good stuff so why don't you get him that, he was telling me the other day he really needs it bad and it would be the best gift ever.

Morning everyone! A little chilly round the edges today...

I wish, Rachel! And welcome :D

Morning Atti! We'll have to see about getting Jake some leftovers... yumm. I'm imagining survivor going on in the backyard now :D

Have a good day everyone!

I think a pair of silk pajamas.

Pia, this is an ideal gift. And bamboo sheets, cause Maggie says they are very soft. He will never want to leave his bed. Jake+silky sheets+a long lie-in on Sunday morning= heaven. Anyone wants to bring him his freshly-ground coffee and freshly-squeezed orange juice to bed, kiss him good morning and stroke his bed-head? I think we should give this particular task to WDW.
I wonder what his favourite breakfast is.

I've mentioned one guinea pig and the whole rodent discussion has spun out of control:) Jake would be quite surprised if he knew what people talk about on his fan blogs:)

I'll be happy to offer him a journey to my place, here in Italy, and a dinner in the fanciest restaurant in town (maybe I should let him pay for that), set in a beautiful medieval building, that always riminds me of how wonderful it would be if I could take him there.
He'd like it.:)

He could bring his silk pajams and his kimono with him. Not sure about guinea pig though.

My word is spess or, minus one 's', spes, meaning hope in Latin. A good word.

Have a good day WDW and everyone.:)

Hi Zodiac! Thanks for giving me the honours there - I happily accept :D I can make Jake a nice veggie bacon sandwich for brekkie... I think Jake would find it charming that we can be so random!

Hey Xenia :D I think Jake would like that too - I think we should all come along though - sounds lovely and if Jake's paying...

My word is plorat which sounds like something nasty you mind step in.

Have a good day everyone! Lovely to see the sunshine here today.
