Heath Ledger - Let's go, let's fly - and he flew

The nominations for the American Academy Awards are to be announced on 22 January, a date on which it would seem inconceivable that Heath Ledger's name would not be one of those read out. After all, we're talking about The Joker here, and Heath's truly extraordinary interpretation of a character I'd never considered anything but a cartoon caricature before. Not now - the Joker was more terrifying because he had blood in his veins and air in his lungs, only possible because Heath put his all into bringing the Joker off the page.

As the anniversary of 22 January draws closer, I'm surprised to realise it's a year. It's not felt like a year. And the date isn't a reminder that it's time to remember Heath, because we've never not thought about Heath. But with the anniversary still to come, and with the knowledge that the date will coincide with the very public announcement of Heath's nomination, it's good timing by EW to release their wonderful commemoration of Heath's work, through pictures and through the memories and thoughts of some close friends and colleagues. And I'm grateful to a good friend for sending it across to me today.

Read and marvel yourselves, but here are some of the quotes which struck home with me and also demonstrated, if it is necessary, that the Joker wasn't a role that pushed Heath to somewhere he didn't want to go. On the contrary, the role was a source of great personal and professional satisfaction to him - he got it spot on and created a believable monster in a cartoon world.

Todd Black, producer, A Knight's Tale: 'When we saw the first cut of A Knight's Tale, you couldn't look away from Heath. We were the first movie that put his full face on the poster. No one knew him quite yet, but we just decided to gamble. And Heath — ugh, he didn't even want to deal with it. He was mortified! He wanted the other people who were in the movie to be on the poster.'

On being offered Spider-man: 'Heath said, ''It's not for me. I would be taking someone else's dream away.''

Terry Gilliam: 'He was a very old soul. When we were in Prague doing Grimm, there was one night we went to see this gypsy band. Somehow his age came up in conversation. At that time, Matt Damon was 32, and I always felt Heath was the same age, if not older. He said, ''I'm 24.'' I said, ''What? That's not possible!'' He had a kind of wisdom you only get from centuries of former life. He could talk about any number of things — books, ideas — and this was not a 24-year-old you were talking to. Maybe he was part aborigine somewhere down the line.'

Terry again: 'I used to get calls from Heath during Brokeback, because he wasn't happy. He felt alone and isolated. I think it was his sense of not getting the kind of warm support we gave him on Grimm. Whatever it did, it produced an extraordinary performance.'

James Schamus: 'During casting, rehearsals, and preproduction, Ang is like the warm, wise, cuddly daddy bear. The minute he yells ''Action'' on the first shot, the actors become alienated props he kind of puts up with. That's the environment, and it's tough on actors. He doesn't yell at people or humiliate them. But it's a very tough space. Heath had very difficult days. You could really feel the pain he was going through.'

Rodrigo Prieto: 'Heath was definitely moody compared to Jake, who is very bubbly and jokes around. There were some very emotional scenes, and Heath would struggle to get it exactly right. It didn't come easily. I think there was an insecurity about his ability as an actor. I remember the scene where he's in the Greyhound station and the girl he'd been seeing comes in and starts crying. Each take, she cried very easily. She had no problem finding that emotion. Heath just looked at me and said, ''Oh, how I envy her.''

Terry: 'Heath was exhilarated by playing the Joker. He said, ''I'm able to do things I never believed were inside me.'' He's working with great actors, like Gary Oldman and Aaron Eckhart, and he'd say, ''I go into these scenes, and they can't do anything to me!'' He used to just giggle that he had found a character that was impregnable. They could beat him, hit him, and it wouldn't make a difference because he was so utterly wacko. It freed him up and got him out of that uncertainty after Brokeback. It was just, ''Let's go. Let's fly.'' And he flew.'

Agent Steve Alexander: 'We were making these incredible plans about what was next, career-wise. The day after he died, he was going to meet Steven Spielberg to explore the idea of playing Tom Hayden in a movie about the Chicago 7. This wasn't a guy who was even for a second thinking about checking out in any way, shape, or form. There's a moment in The Dark Knight when Heath's hanging upside down and he says to Batman, ''You and I are destined to do this forever.'' It's a very sad moment. A sequel certainly would have happened. I cringe when I read that he was a tortured soul or a Method actor who couldn't get out of his own way because he'd played this dark character. It's just not true.'

James Schamus: 'It was one of those ''where were you on the day Kennedy was shot'' moments. I called Jake and remember wailing.'

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly for such a fabulous tribute.

So, so true - I'm so happy that Heath's work is being rewarded the way it is. He deserves it, and is much missed. :)

Hi Anon :) Heath definitely deserves it and that is such an improtant thing to remember :D

Hey Rubes - a really lovely tribute and it did me good to read this after such a horrible day at work - makes you realise what matters.

Thanks, WDW. I can't wait to pick up this commemmorative issue. I'm so happy that Heath is getting so many awards for the Joker; I only wish he could be here to see and enjoy his success, and the response to his character, The Joker.

Tears for the loss of him! And thanks be for the gift of him.

Thank you so much for this beautiful post WDW
=*O(

You have me in tears... or actually, trying to hold back my tears because I'm at the office right now.

I miss Heath so much! More than I ever thought I would if someone had told me on January 21st what was going to happen... I miss him more every day. And somehow I still can't accept that he is gone.

I will be away for a few days but I will be back on January 22nd... I know...

Oh! Thanks for the beautiful pics of Jake jogging :O|

Sorry! Still very sad

Have a very Gyllenhaal weekend everybody!!!

I read the whole thing on line (aint the net great!) and it was a really good piece. I was glad to read all the people saying how much Heath enjoyed being The Joker. I know last year I did think that playing such a nutter may have led to the sleeplessness and anxiety but I dont think that any more.
The bit that really got to me was James Schamus' (BBM producer) reaction to the news - he phoned Jake.

PS {{{{ruby}}}} not 'spoken' to you in ages. Hope you're good. xxx

Hi Anon :) I hope I can find the issue too.

Hey Pia! Good to see you *)

I'm so glad you liked it, Sara - I've been weepy too. I don't think I'd have thought it either. Thanks for the link to the video youdid for Heath, what a lovely thing to do! See you in a few days :)

Hi LJF :D That is such a good thing to say - I really don't see the Joker as a dark time for Heath, it was a challenge he relished and we should celebrate the role. Scares me though :D

I've added that comment by James Schamus to the post. I couldn't read those last two pages before, but seeing your comment, I went back and did and now I'm knocked for six again and I wanted that quote on the post. I hope we get to see in the smoke soon xx

Lovely, lovely post, WDW. I'd never seen the Schamus quote before. Can't believe it's been a year. There's a part of my brain that still can't process the fact that Heath died. Still seems inconceivable.

A very touching and beautiful tribute WDW.

I am grateful for Heath as I am grateful for Jake.

Have a good weekend all.

Hi JoeAnn :D

Thanks Get Real - I like that - yes, I'm grateful for them both too :)

I think we're ready for a weekend.

Thanks, WDW, for adding that quote from Jame Schamus about calling Jake. It's not clear whether the wailing came James or from jake, or from both. Let's face it, *both* of them needed a shoulder to cry on at that point, most likely. Jake was in the middle of filming "Brothers" in New Mexico then, and there was just no point in asking Jake to film any more scenes that week, judging from reports. A very sad time.

A year later? We *still* haven't seen "Brothers" yet. Why is it taking so long? What is happening with "Nailed"? I can understand that there might be a lot of CGI stuff with "Prince of Persia" which would delay release, but what could account for the "Brothers" lag? :-(

So, with a dearth of new Jake movies, we devour new pics of Jake jogging or going for coffee, and Jake dutifully tries to smile for the camera, knowing that we want to be reassured that he's alive and well. Oh, well.....:-/

Hi Paul :) Thanks for such a lovely comment - what a year. This year, it would be great beyond words if we could have movie star Jake back again, in the theatres, on the screens and on the red carpets. I reckon we might :) I hope the wait will be over. I'm very sad at the thought of a Bafta 2009 red carpet without Heath.

WDW -- thanks for bringing that commemoration to our notice, and a wonderful job you did at recapping too.

What an amazing coincidence on the date of the oscar nomination announcements. I fear it's going to be a somber week. Keeping many of these quotes in mind will help.

Hey it's Sun Pony Monica! Good to see you, my friend. It's going to be a hell of a week, when it could have been such a celebration. But, yes, it's good to know that we all feel similarly and we're all going through it this week. Love to you and Mr Monica xx

My word is hottie :D

That's such a great post, WDW!

I have a song that I like to play that really has it's ups and downs, and I think of Heath when I play it.

Thanks Bandgeek :D I have Heath and Jake playlists that are very special to me too :)

WDW thank you so much for posting on this beautiful tribute to Heath. I had a mixture of happy sad feelings while reading it. I'm so glad that we got to see him give some great performances as diverse as Ennis and of course The Joker. But I feel loss for all the potential he had inside which he never got to show us.

It's great that he's being honoured at all the award shows this year but sad because it makes me feel the loss of him even more.

Heath you may have left us but you will never be forgotten xxx

I agree, LJF and Paul, wow that James Schamus quote about talking with Jake and wailing gave a gut punch. :/

...And I still feel that gut puch when I think of Heath. Thank you so much WDW for this wonderful, frank and timely tribute to Heath. Incredible to believe it's nearly a year. I don't know how to explain this but I feel his 'energy' is still here with us. Time definitely is a healer as some of his friends seem to be now in a place where they can talk about him a little - Gosh, that's got to be hard - but great for us to hear new tidbits.

Good wishes to all of you for a happy, prosperous and connected year. xx

Thank for for this post and the link to EW! What a wonderful tribute - really hard to read, though... When I read sentences like "That was the last time I saw him" I can't help but cry...

Isn't it weird, though? Everybody is so angry that he didn't win the Oscar for BBM - and rightly so, cause he sure deserved it - and Heath himself was glad that he didn't win...

I need to check if the bookstore at the trainstation here has EW, I doubt it, though...

Have a wonderful weekend everybody - and a very special "Hi!" from me to LJF, Sun Pony Monica and Sheba!!!
