Fingers crossed for a night to remember

There's not much more we can do now but wait and see what tonight brings. So, wherever we are, I earnestly hope that we will end the day or begin the new day with the news that Heath Ledger has secured an Oscar so utterly deserved for his reinvention of the Joker.

This moving article charts Heath's progress towards the Oscars - 'he will not be at the Kodak Theater, but his presence will be hard to miss.' One's thoughts have to be with Heath's family who, it is believed, will be attending the ceremony and perhaps collecting the Oscar, should Heath win, for Heath's daughter.

And the ceremony itself has been rearranged - to give the Best Supporting Actor more prominence by rescheduling it later into the event? - and many of the presenters are to be kept hidden, away from the red carpet.

ETA: With thanks to Monica, here's the schedule of awards, with Best Supporting Actor at 7:03pm (PT).

I also want to wish best of luck to Kate Winslet and David Fincher.

Includes picture from Vanity Fair.

Oh WDW, you just know how to hit the right mood of how we feel. Great post as usual. I just have a feeling in my bones that the academy will do the right thing this time.

Good luck definately to David. I hope he wins best director so we get the 'butt' shot ;D

Thanks for those clips, WDW, Heath is just so good in them, the way he speaks, everything. He's so deserving of this award. Fingers crossed! Best of luck to Kate who was so good in The Reader, and to David Fincher as well. :)

I'll be watching the Oscars live tonight, even tough I swore I would never watch them again after the Crash fiasco and Heath not winning for Ennis. I know it will be heartbreaking but I want to see his family accepting the award and in a way share this so proud moment with them.

It will be a confort thinking of all the Heathens watching and going through the same strong and conflicted emotions I am sure we will all be feeling. People in my RL know I loved BBM but they don't know how much and none of them would understand what being a Brokie is and how affected I've been by Heath's death. So I am glad to have this place where people do understand.

People in my RL would so not understand my gyllenhaalism either! Serious people my age aren't supposed to fall head over heels for an actor! And I don't want to imagine what they would think about all the slash I've read in the last 3 years. They would probably have a heart attack if they knew! :D

Sheba, thanks for that :D I suppose we're feeling much the same tonight. I think the Academy will do what's right - or it's time to revolt! I so, so hope David wins!

I'm hoping Jake will present but this new 'arrangement' means we wouldn't see him on the red carpet Sad that. I can't imagine the actors and their management like that either.

Thanks, Anon :) These are such wonderful clips! The scene with Heath's head outside the car, the Joker relishing in the night - just sensational. Fingers crossed for Kate and David :D

Hi Olympia! You are so right - it is a comfort thinking we all feel the same. It's not easy for others to understand how deep the feelings go, and that's a big reason why I started WDW. But the way that BBM and Jake in particular have permeated so many areas of my life... I do wish the Oscars were on TV here. Thanks for commenting :)

I meant to say above that many of us over here won't be able to watch the Oscars and so it would be great if those who can would keep us in touch with what we're missing! Thank you *)

Good night, wet dark!

Hey WDW, it's going to be live on Sky Premier tonight.

OMG my heart just leapt, they just showed some highlights of previous years and got several clips of Jake, Heath and Michelle at the 2006 Oscars.

I will report as much as possible on the action as it happens.

Thanks for this really fitting post WDW.

I have a feeling the Academy will make the right decisions this time. It's a bit disappointing that the presenters are being kept secret and will be missing from the red carpet. Part of what makes these award shows for me is watching the glamour and style on the red carpet.

I know what everyone here is saying about people in RL not understanding the effect BBM had on them. My friends know I love the movie and both Jake and Heath but they would never fully understand how much. It is so great to come here and chat to other people who understand exactly how I feel.

Fingers crossed for Heath, David, Kate & Sean Penn. I'll also have my fingers crossed for the Irish hope Martin McDonagh for the best original screenplay for In Bruges.

To those who can watch the ceremony live enjoy. I will be looking forward to the highlights tomorrow night.

Hey there WDW-

"..... it would be great if those who can would keep us in touch with what we're missing! Thank you *)"

Sorry for the dumbass question- do you want us to post the results as they occur? Don't want to post unwanted spoilers but happy to post the winners as they are awarded, if that's what you want! :-D

Question: so is it Heath's family who would accept if he wins, or is there a possibility that Jake would accept? (I saw that rumour earlier this week....)

Anonymous said...

i heard from several articles that heaths father will accept if heath wins and he is in la for the show

k thx anon,

Kate Winslet just waved and said to Fern cotton "Hello to everyone in the UK who's mad enough to stay up to watch this" ... and I instinctively waved back... mad or what??!!

Love the Oscars. Ryan didn't get snubbed this time by Brad - he gave him about 20 seconds. Saw Ben Kingsley and Anthony Hopkins too. Hopefully the awards show will begin soon.

Good luck, Kate, Danny or David, Heath, Anne et al.

Beautiful Penelope Cruz won Best supporting Actress. Great ceremony so far and great opening by Hugh Jackman, he's amazing!

sheba said...

Milk won best orginal screenplay. What a moving emotional speech by the writer. The torch has now been passed to Milk. Go Focus Features.

Whoa, I don't go much for tabloid gossip *disclaimer* but a shot of Brad, Angie and Jen in the same room. They all looked so relaxed and happy. Show 'em guys.

sheba said...

WallE won best Animation - Yay! Jen's doing a great job keeping Jack Black in check.

sheba said...

Art direction and Set Decoration didn't go to the Dark Knight - Benjamin Button won though.

sheba said...

Costume design goes to The Duchess - Yay, one for the Brits

sheba said...

Makeup - again TDK loses to Benjamin Button. Speeches are soooooooooo boring after Penelope Cruz.

Aditionally, you just gotta give it to Jake that he knows how to present extremely well. It's not just about reading the lines, it's the delivery and the fun element one can brong to 15 seconds.

sheba said...

I meant 'bring'. Oh gosh, now my spelling's gone to pot = way past my bedtime but still hanging in there.

Natalie Portman and Ben Stiller were good. Ben did a brilliant p*sstake of Joquene Phoenix.

Best Cinematography goes to Slumdog Millionaire.

Anonymous said...

Agreed Sheba @ 2:29. Many complained about Jake's "dull" delivery at the Globes but it fit the purpose: it wasn't all about him. So many get up there on stage to present (like at the Oscars now) and it becomes a "look at meeeeee" show.

Sorry, rant over!

sheba said...

Sorry Jessica Beale, you're gorgeous but the dress is horrid.

Best live action short - oops a German film... sorry . I wonder if Ben 'Joaquin' Stiller removed the gum from the podium or is it stuck to the bottom of someone's oscar?

sheba said...

Here it comes, the Best Supporting Actor... and they've got 5 past winners to present including Alan Arkin, Cuba Gooding Jnr, Christopher Walken .. but I swear, If Phillip Seamore Hoffman win I'm going to smash my TV set so no more blogging.

Cuba just shot down RDJ that was funny...

OK, here goes.... they've just shown Heath's family.

HEATH WON!! Everyone's on their feet.

Oh damn... be back soon.

sheba said...

Sorry... back again.

There was a standing ovation from everyone in the room. Heath's mom, dad and sister came up to accept the award and all of them spoke. Kim was choking up but he got out what he wanted to say. His mom says they're choosing to celebrate his win then they shot to Anne Hathaway in tears but proud. The family were gracious, humble and uplifting, they did Heath proud.

Feeling incredibly happy, angry and sad all at the same time. But intend to celebrate this win.

Man on Wire just won something and Monsier Petit balanced the oscar upside down on his chin :D

sheba said...

Hey spotlight, just 'spotted' you hehehe. Good to see someone else here. Are you enjoying the oscars so far?

sheba said...

Will Smith just appeared. He's hot and fresh still.

Best Visual Effects go to Benjamin Button that beat TDK and Iron Man. They should have all got one.

Most Outstanding Sound Editing goes to:
THE DARK KNIGHT WON! Yay!!

Best Sound Mixing goes to Slumdog Millionnaire. Good speech. Will is still presenting - they're getting their money's worth out of him.

Best Film Editing goes to: Slumdog Millionnaire .. again...

sheba said...

eff off Stephanie Beecham. She said 'Phillip Seamore Hoffman should have won'. I can't stand you now.

sheba said...

Eddie Murphy presented an honorary oscar to Jerry Lewis. Simple, humble speech.

sheba said...

Best musical score coming up. the music's so soothing it's sending me to sleep....

sheba said...

... oh... Slumdog Millionaire won.

Now the singing and dancing has woken me up.. that was energetic
Best Original Song goes again to Slumdog... way to go. Good humble speech again ... he chose to love. Seems I've seen that somewhere before signed by our Prince on a white and yellow background.

sheba said...

Best Foreign language film - It was Japanese - great speech

In memorium was just done. I'd forgotten that Paul was no longer with us....

Oooh. Reese has just come on. Being funny.

Best Directing goes to: Danny Boyle

Danny Boyle just received the award in the spirit of Tigger... boing..boing..LOL Great speech Danny.

Five beautiful former Oscar Best Actress winners present the Best Actress award to:

KATE WINSLET WON!! At last.... Great shampoo bottle speech.

This has been a good oscars

sheba said...

They've got the heavy weights out for Best Actor to present:

to the tune of The Magnificent Seven the More Than OK Five walk out: Sir Ben Kingsley, Robert Deniro, Michael Douglas, The Piano Man who kissed Halle Berry when he won, and Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Now.. the winner is: SEAN PENN - yay!

What signs of hatred? Equal rights for everyone. I can guess. Great speech Sean and so well deserved.

sheba said...

Presented by Stephen Spielberg the Best Picture was:

Slumdog millionaire - Everyone's on stage, I hope it can hold :DD

.... It's been great and I'm outta here.

G'nite all ;D

Sheba, you're hired to host the next Oscars! LOL!
Wow...THAT was a wonderful report!
I thought I'd get here (Oscars just finished) to tell at least some of the news, but you left me not even Jessica Biel's horrible dress. hahaha!
I love you!

Now my humble impressions:

1. I fell in love with Hugh Jackman for good. Gosh the man can sing, dance, hold the audience, be funny...all this looking devastatingly handsome! WOW! (have you seen his rehearsal on Youtube? Go there and take a look at his arms) (Sorry Jake...I just can't help it)

2.I'm so glad Heath won, he so deserved it as we all know. I'm just a little disappointed by his parents speech though. don't know...I thought I would cry, but they could not make me emotional. (trust me I cried a lot of times during the show). His sister almost got me there...almost.

3. I love the new format. It was fun and not even a bit boring.

4. Kate rocks!

5. Nikole Kidman looks mummified

6. I'm sad for David and Brad, but I love Danny Boyle and his film.

7. Where the hell was Jake?

Good night, everyone.

Just one more thing: Sean Penn made an incredible speech. He was already so high in my concept of human being, but now he hit the top. The writer of Milk also made a very emotional speech that made me clap from my sofa.

Good morning!! Thanks for the post, WDW! As always the right post at the right time! :)

I didn't manage to watch the Oscars last night. I had my clock set, but was just too tired to get up and to afraid of the work day following then...
When I was still lying in bed this morning the news were on the radio - and I held my breath, till they confirmed that Heath had won the Oscar! It would have broken my heart if they had not given it to him - again!
Watched a clip of Heath winning on YouTube just now... Like with each one of the awards this year, the moment they announced him as the winner the tears came. But this time even worse than the other times. Don't know if that was because of the fact that he should have gotten it already 3 years ago or because this (if I am not mistaken) was the last one of the big awards for this year... Maybe both...

Thank you soo much for your great report, Sheba! It would have been great to be here with you!!

LOL at Jessica Biel's dress - I haven't seen it yet, but since Sheba and MonicaO are unanimous regarding its horribleness it must be worth seeing!

And I need to find a clip with Sean Penn's speech!

My word: graft WTF?? :D

Great work, sheba :) :)

Yeah, know what you mean, WDW ...

I cannot express how happy I am that Heath has won. I have been waiting for so long for it to happen. He deserved it for his Ennis already but they robbed him and today justice has been brought back.

WDW, everyone, what a beautiful day, right?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

GOOD MORNING! I'm shouting in caps as I'm happy, so happy. A bit teary but very happy. Zodiac, yes! It's a good day!

And Sheba!! Weoll, done you :D I really enjoyed reading your commentary - I don't have Sky and so now I know which bits to try and look out for. I really want to see some of these dresses.

Totally agree with you, Spotlight. Thanks for commenting :D

Hi Carol and X! Good to see you on such a great night :D I was very disappointed that David didn't win but a good night for British movies and talent.

Hi Anons :) I'm glad Heath's parents and sister could accept the award for Matilda.

Morning Monica O! I'd love to see some of the show - I've heard it described as being like a cabaret. I am disappointed Jake wasn't there. That's the third year in a row.

Hi Uli! I hope you had a good night out :D I want to see Jessica Biel's dress! I'll have to find a pic...

Morning Nouskie and Zodiac :D

have a great day!
