London remembers Heath - the progress continues...

On Sunday night, a large step was taken on that relentless and bittersweet progress towards 22 February and the Academy Awards, when Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor at the BAFTAs. It was an inevitable win but the lack of suprise didn't mean a lack of emotion.

The award was collected by Charles Roven, the producer of The Dark Knight: 'Knowing Heath, I know that he would be very humbled just to be in the company of the other performances that were also nominated this evening. I had the good fortune of making two films with Heath and I considered myself lucky just to have made one. The last one was The Dark Knight. He was, as an actor and a professional and a human being, one of a kind.'

It was also a big night for the director with whom Heath arguably had his closest actor-director relationship. Terry Gilliam was given the final award of the night, a fellowship of the Academy. And, backstage, he had this to say about a special actor and man: 'Everybody has said he was extraordinary, but we can't even begin to image what he was going to be. We only saw a tiny tip of the iceberg. But he's gone... It would have been nice if he had won more awards when he was alive, frankly. Heath was a genius. I really do think there was nothing he couldn't do. We hadn't seen anything yet. He was incredibly funny, his timing was brilliant, he could invent dialogue that kept me spinning all the time on Parnassus. And he was probably one of the greatest gentlemen I have known. It is a terrible loss. That is all.'

The Baftas are closely personal to me for all sorts of reasons and, watching the red carpet, with the shivering fans, the red glow at dusk and the umbrellas not dampening the glamour, I couldn't help but remember two years ago. It was good, though, to see some familiar faces - Daniel Craig, James McAvoy, Thandie Newton.

The picture below wasn't taken by me but I can't have been many feet away and it's how I remember it.

Hi Rubes *) Yes, lovely words. I think I will always feel wistful around BAFTA time. I still have my wristband and radioset safe :D That day was... intense, talk about an understatement.

Oh I'd like to be able to at least IMAGINE what that "BAFTA" night was. **envy** But there's some parts I really can, like the big smiles on your faces. ;)

Thanks for the clip and pictures, WDW.

I hope everybody is having a good day.

I still have my wristband and radio set too. And lots and lots of pics of John Barrowman. :D

Hi Monnie O. It was intense and very tiring, but lots of smiles and girlie giggles and shouting and stuff.

The whole day and night were amazing (we didn't know for sure Jake would be there). I'm never going to forget that moment when I heard that Jake Gyllenhaal had got out of his car and was heading towards us. Lots of funny moments too :D And Jake was hot!

I hope you're having a good day *)

Ruby, I have sooo many John Barrowman pics too! Testing the camera. Strange how there was no earthquake for him but the whole world was shaking when Jack was holding my mag! Yeah, lots of shouting ;D Lots of laughing too from what I remember. I loved it when we toasted Jake in the pub afterwards.

I love the last pic from your precious BAFTA memories... :)

urgh... where's that Jamie Foxx music video?

today the new accountant in my department "told" me that Heath Ledger won the Bafta and I pointed at the Heath pic on my cubical (a gift from the Oxford bash) at him and like, "duh.. I know!" Heath has recruited many man-fans from TDK.

Hi winterbird :D I know, that video is late!

Jake and Heath both have Baftas now, in fact the same Bafta (best supporting). That gives me very mixed and churned up feelings - but I am very pleased Heath won. His absence on the stage was hard to watch.

I hope everyone's having a good evening - no storm tonight for a change :D I wonder where Jake is :)

Oh, I forget to tell you, WDW! Jake is here!
(Geez...Dream on, Monica O...Dream on.)

"I reckon I might bring mine to our next get together" Can I go? I can wear a T-shirt with the stamp: "NON-BRIT NEWBIE", and a badge "Sorry Johnny". Please, please, please?!

My word is "imulve". It's certainly contagious.

Even I get all wistful when I think of the wonderful Bafta Day 2007... And I wasn't even there - although in parts it felt like I was there with you! It was so exciting!!

And with this year's Baftas you can add another moment where I realize that I still can't really believe that Heath is no longer with us to the growing list...
Still makes me cry to see somebody else accepting an award for him.

Oh yes, you come along, Monnie O! Be a pleasure :D Do look after Jake if you're hiding him over there :D

Morning Uli! We felt like we had a lot of people with us that day - very special :) It is so sad that Heath's win couldn't have been another day like that.

Have a lovely day everyone! Very cold and crisp and sunny here :)

Hi Pia! Posting at the same time :D I think the opening night (after this week's previews) is tomorrow - surely not a coincidence... Thanks for sharing in the Bafta memories :)

Hey Pia!

That would make sense that tomorrow is opening night and Jake would be here.

I have an event tomorrow night. :/ But I will see what I can do to stop by the theatre anyway.

My tickets are for the first week in March.

So happy for Heath's win, and moved by Terry and Charles' tributes.
I have goosebumps now.
I will celebrate tomorrow by taking a swim in the Indian Ocean at Cottesloe Beach at sunset.
Thank you so much for posting the clip, WDW, and for your sensitive post.
Love,
Paola
