Making Heath's fantasy a reality
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus does have a UK distributor (meaning a June release in Britain) but its fate elsewhere is less assured - albeit temporarily. Its much-missed, much-loved star Heath Ledger may be lost but so far from forgotten and, backstage at the Oscars, sister Kate said of Parnassus: 'It's going to be amazing'. While surely there can be no doubt on that, the struggle to find support for the project outside the UK was the subject of a recent Entertainment Weekly article, with the conclusion from maestro Terry Gilliam: 'There are going to be a few gasps... I can guarantee gasps.'

They will find a distributor just based on the fact it's Heath's final movie, add Jude Law, Johnny Depp and Colin Farrell to the mix, and it should almost guarantee a release in the US!!
You know, I love Terry Gilliam films... not a lot of people enjoyed "The Brothers Grimm", but I loved it!! GO TERRY! I am positive you have done Heath proud!

Hi Amy - I totally agree. I have no doubt that Parnassus, whether it shows in Cannes or not, will get an international distributor. Because how could it possibly fail? Of course, there will be glitches - how could there not be in a film where its lead dies? - but it will be full of Heath and affection towards him, not to mention genius on the part of its maker. I can't wait too :)

Oh thank you, thank you, WDW! What a great pic of Heath! I cannot wait to see this film, and I am so happy that Johnny, Jude and Colin were able to finish it for Heath. When I see a certain pic of Heath dressed in the clown outfit, he reminds me of Erroll Flynn for some reason, just a jaunty expression.

So many mixed emotions about Heath's last film...I'm anxious to see it but I hate thinking that it is his 'last' film. It's not fair. :(
I try to console myself by thinking about the many works of art we still may see from Heath in the future - there's already talk of some music videos he directed and we know he use to write (maybe we'll see some of his writing some day). Can never get enough of Heath!

And Amy, I loved Brothers Grimm too, I don't understand why so many people didn't. Heath was great in it, so funny. I amazing that he could give us Jacob and Ennis and the Joker, they were all so different. Can you imagine what else he could have done with this incredible talent? *sigh*

Hi Olympia! Oh, it's simply gorgeous here - warm sunshine and not a cloud in the sky. I've just been out taking photos of the blossom. It's Mother's Day weekend in the UK so I hope the sun stays out for it. I'm glad the spring is making an appearance in Canada too, now. But yes it's been very hot down south so I hope the temperatures are easing there now, especially for our Monicas!
The range of Heath's roles is amazing. I've not seen Brothers Grimm, which is bad of me. I must make amends.

I am quite enthralled by the quotation on the 2nd page of the article, saying "There's a prescience about the film that's quite interesting. There are lines you can't believe were written before Heath died"...
I'm relieved the film will come out in the UK.
I was quite astonished to learn about the troubles with finding a US distributor, considering the acting talent working on it, and of course the director.

Sometimes you just shock me.
This afternoon I have been missing Heath so much that it hurts. I don't know why. I mean, it's not rational. I never actually meet him or even had a crush on him! (the "crush guy" has always been Jake). I would watch his movies, read the news I found about him (when I stumbled on them. I didn't Google him or anything) and wait for his next project.
I remember when it was announced that he was playing The Joker, I was like "What? He is too cute to be the Joker!". And then I saw the first pictures and I was blown away. I didn't run around shouting "Oscar nod! Oscar nod!" just because I was at the office.
And suddenly he was gone and I found myself grieving and I realized that he had become like one of those friend you can always count on. Most of the times you aren't aware of how important that person is for you until you lose him/her.
So this afternoon I was missing him a lot and then I opened your blog and what I see? Heath staring at me from that lovely picture. So you made my cry. But I thank you because it reminded me that I'm not the only one who misses him and as long as he is remembered and missed he won't be truly gone.
I will see The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus of course. If it doesn't make it to the theaters I will buy the DVD. In part because I liked 12 Monkeys a lot and The Brothers Grimm enough to trust Terry to do a good job but mainly because I feel I owe it to Heath. I ought to be with him until the end.
I loved what Johnny, Jude and Colin did. I'm never been a Colin fan but I must admit that this put him in my "good" list.
Sorry for writing such a long comment. I usually don't write this long about Jake but it's probably because I comment about him more often and because he inspire me happy thoughts. For some reason I feel I don't need to elaborate so much about my happy thoughts.
(Well, I'm being unfair, Heath inspire happy thoughts too but they mix with the sad ones... "Saudade" Remember I told you about that word?)
Finally. Too bad that we won't have a Gyllenhaal Cannes Festival =O( With all the coverage it gets we would have plenty of footage/photos/interview to drool on. But I'm still positive about something later this year. I mean... how can we spend a whole year without a Jake movie? I'm sure that's against at least one of articles of the Human Rights Declaration. (and if it is not, it should be)

Paola! So good to see you. I'm amazed too to even think that this film has had trouble finding US distributors. If it does go to Cannes, hopefully that can be resolved.
((((Sara)))) Thanks for that incredible comment - I know just what you're saying. Jake for me has always been 'the one' but that hasn't stopped Heath being extraordinarily special to me and loved, even though I never saw him in person, either. I have a deep affection for him after BBM and that's not something I would ever want to lose, and these other projects are important to me.
It's interesting that you say that with Parnassus you've now warmed to Colin Farrell. I'm like that with Jude Law - I've never cared for him but this puts him in a new light for me.
We've gone far too long without a new Jake film, definitely much longer than is right. But there'll be at least one before the end of the year.

Heath has some pretty influential friends. People like Matt Damon and others who've worked on the "other side of the camera" who might find a way to help get a distributor.
Distribution is a very sensitive area for filmmakers and film studios and all sorts of things are being tried today that weren't considered an option 20 years ago. Who ever heard of a movie being available to view at home the same day it's released in a theater! But that happens with some films now.
For example, the "Buck Howard" movie with John Malkovich was available for home viewing with Comcast OnDemand before it ever found it's way to theatres in the area. I can think of several others as well. Terry might have to think outside the box to get Parnassuss seen. He'll have to let go of some traditional concepts but Parnassuss will be seen.
To be honest, I continue to delude myself it's still "in production." That way I can wait a bit. I am in no hurry to see Heath's last film. Strange to say, I find it somewhat reassuring it's still "out there."
The other day I was looking at my collection and realized that soon, I will have his complete body of work. And he didn't even see his 30th birthday.

Thanks very much for such an interesting comment, 11:00 :) I also hope that the influence of Heath will mean that as many people as possible will get to see his work. But absolutely, when the 'final' film is out, it will be very hard indeed.
