Making it tough, getting it right

In an interview to publicise her new film, Synechdoche, Michelle Williams has been talking about what it was like to work with Ang Lee on Brokeback Mountain and how her experience was completely different from that of Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger. 'The boys' had it tough.

'With me he was very compassionate. He was almost like a woman he was just so gentle. He would just literally hold my hand and rub my back and say ‘I know, I know, I know'. He was just so dear to me. I think it's because that's what I needed, I think that's what he saw. I've noticed personally, I'm shy and I work best when I feel like somebody trusts me. When I worked with Todd Haynes and I was trying to do something that I'd never really done before and play this character that was very outward and edicentric creation I was nervous and it was all new to me, every time he would say ‘Great, do it again'. And I just got the sense that even if it wasn't great I blossomed because I felt so free and confident. I could make mistakes and I couldn't see him panic ever and he trusted me enough to make mistakes and not get nervous.'

'And I think Ang probably saw something similar but with the boys [Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal] he was very tough. He would give more notes to the boys. They would do some big meaty scene and ask ‘How was that? How was that?' and all he would say was ‘Light was good.' And they had just poured their hearts out, so I guess that's what makes a good director too. Knowing what each actor needs.'

Even if it might not be exactly what the actor wanted.

This reminds me of one of my favourite accounts from Jake of working with Ang: 'Well, it was really interesting, he was a man of very few words. He would say things like, 'Do that better,' 'That was okay'. I remember very specifically, I said, 'How was that shot?' And he said, 'Very gay.' Yeah, I think emotionally that was the most I got out of Ang. He was so excited that it was very gay. But yeah, he has a sort of – I hesitate to say manipulation, but he recognized the role of the actor and the personality of the actor. He plays with that relationship and knows that you're gonna want to please him. So he'll play back and forth on that, and then he recognizes how to do that within the character you're playing and what the character needs.'

'There was a scene where I was herding 500 sheep on my own, it's not in the movie, down this hill at sunset with, like, a horse. I felt so proud of myself, one, that I was actually riding a horse, two, that I was herding 500 sheep. And there were four or five cameras picking it up, and I remember coming down to the very end and Ang – I was so excited, and Ang said, 'kind of sexy'. That was what he said to me. And I said, 'Let's do it again!' He was like, 'Let's move on'. So my performance, really, I'd describe as 'kind of sexy', just kind of. And then the next scene we moved onto, I was eager to please. And I think he likes to keep that relationship with his actors.'

But when all's said and done...

i love Ang Lee.he seems like a very sweet guy.i was so mad when Terry Gilliam and someone else made it sound like it was horrible on bbm set and Ang Lee was so cold and Heath was miserable while on his set they were sooo nice blah blah.

Hi Anon :D So glad to hear you liked the post. I think the BBM shoot was hard for both Jake and Heath, as they found that Ang on set was very different to Ang in rehearsals, but, as Michelle suggests here, Ang knew his actors and how best to draw Jack and Ennis from them. He did the job perfectly and so they did as well.

Looking back now, those pics of Jake fooling around - I'm so glad we have them! Such a laugh :D

I just saw the article with that quote from Michelle yesterday and it brought tears to my eyes just thinking about "the boys" together while filming in Alberta. *heavy sigh*

Thanks for this post...I'll never get enough BBM, ever. And ending with that fun picture was perfect...no more tears!

Thanks for another great post WDW and the interview with Michelle Williams. I didn't realise that she is in Scorcese's new movie, Shutter Island.

It was interesting to hear her talk about Dawson's Creek and how she felt kind of embarrassed about it at the time. She is right it was special to a lot of us.

Love the pics aswell by the way - real fun:)

Perfect selection of pictures, especially the last one! That whole set always gives me the giggles. I love goofy Jake! :DD

I'm sorry the BBM shoot was hard on the boys (I love calling them that, our boys) because of Ang, but I'm not sorry for the magnificent result. Ang is a genius and I'm sure Jake and Heath forgave him when they saw the amazing work he got out of them. :)

I love reminiscing all these Brokeback little behind the scene details!

Ha! Ang was spot on to get Jake to please him and he probably realised that Jake likes to be thought of as "sexy"??? LOL...

I remember Heath once said that when they were filming, he would go back to his trailer and felt like a failure because Ang Lee wouldn't pat his back or say "well done" to him. I guess Heath's feelings were a bit hurt! But then of course, in hindsight, it's all for the greatness of the film and Ang Lee brought out the best of all of them...

Thanks for the Brokeback post :)

I always love hearing about Brokeback too - all the hard work was worth it because the film is one of the most memorable ever. Just beautiful. It was funny hearing Jake's telling of the story of how proud he was herding 500 sheep alone - "Kinda sexy, but just kinda." "Let's do it again! and Ang said "Let's move on." :)

I'm looking forward to seeing Michelle in Shutter Island. Thanks WDW!

Good morning everyone! Is it Friday yet?

Hi BBMISwear! It's good to mix the tears with the smiles - BBM is all about that for me these days.

Hey Carol! You have a new pic! Lookin good :D I missed dawson's Creek but I don't think Michelle should be ashamed of something so many people loved. And look how far she's come!

Hi Olympia :D I love Goofy Jake too - adorable. I think Jake can only feel admiration for Ang now. It's interesting, the different ways in which directors work.

Hey Bertie! I love ths sheep story - poor Jake :) That would certainly be out of my range of experiences! I love that he wanted it just right.

Good to see you all :D Have a good day.

You know this is a fascinating question for me. I remember Jake talking about how lonely he was during the shoot. But how can Ang Lee's being so terse bring out such great performances if the actors felt discouraged or uncertain their work? I understand that their characters were isolated, and so the relationship with Lee replicated that isolation, and yet it's just so hard for me to imagine how this alchemy worked.
