Jake Gyllenhaal at the Brothers press conference: 'So to all those cab drivers in New York, I'm not Spider-Man'

The Boston Herald was at the Brothers press conference yesterday. Fortunately for us, it has decided to begin its run of features on the movie and its actors with a recap of what happened at the conference with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jim Sheridan. We've already heard that Jake was the hilarious clown of the procedings and now we get a chance to get a taste of that for ourselves. It's been a long time since we've seen and heard Jake promoting a film and he is on top form. Before the hoopla of the premiere tonight, we can sit back and enjoy some Jakisms as well as some insights from Jake and Jim on how they brought their own very different perspectives to Brothers. As Jake says, 'it was great food for a great meal'.

'QUESTION: WHAT ARE YOU FEELINGS ABOUT REMAKES AND HOW DO THEY APPLY TO THIS ONE IN PARTICULAR? GYLLENHAAL [makes a goofy grin that he has to answer this question and then tries to be serious]: I think that we all felt a tremendous responsibility and a little bit of a burden to remake a film. I think because the first version of the film was so extraordinary. I think that Jim [Sheridan], all of us, everyone approached each character – I don’t want to speak for everybody but I think we all did watch the movie and each one of the actors gave an extraordinary performance. I think in transposing it to America I think you clearly start to see that there are differences, cultural differences and reactions to situations that are different depending on the culture, and I think we all looked at that as a great opportunity and then having Jim was…where are you from again? [he laughed at his own joke about the very Irish filmmaker]. Just coming from Ireland, it was interesting in terms of how he would say behaviorally, he’d say or expect the character to act and then how in America an American would respond to a situation. There was one moment where – I don’t know if you remember this, Jim – where Natalie’s character tells my character that Tobey has been killed. We did talk for a little while about me falling in the snow and making snow angels. I don’t know if you remember that?'

'SHERIDAN: No. GYLLENHAAL: I said, ‘I don’t know if an American would react that way.’ But I don’t really think in that situation that has nothing to do with culture or society. Being in a remake though is great fun [laughs]. I suggest it for everyone. Any actor in the room and any actor out there, really, pick your favorite movie and redo it.'

'YOU ALL KNOW EACH OTHER. WAS THERE A LOT OF REHEARSAL ON THIS? OR WAS THERE A LOT OF STAYING IN CHARACTER TO GET THE PROPER TONE ON SET AND CAN YOU TALK ABOUT THAT, THE ATMOSPHERE IN MAKING THE FILM? GYLLENHAAL: It was great to be in a remake because you really have a new sense…[laughs]. Naturally, because all know each other, I found that we all had fascinating complications and fascinating interactions just as the people that we are. There was very little to do as a result of that. So often you have to create some kind of back story but because of the real life, people have very often said to me that I look like Tobey and so I thought that it was a perfect casting thing, that Jim put us together. We really just made a movie so that I could say that I look a little bit different from Tobey. So to all those cab drivers in New York, I’m not Spider-Man. I think that was just inherent. It was there. It existed and it took very little to make that happen. A little uncomfortable on set sometimes because what it is real also sometimes is what it is being pretended. At the same time, as an actor, I think it was great food for a great meal.'

'QUESTION: WAS IT HARD TO GET THIS FILM MADE, GIVEN THAT IT’S A WAR MOVIE AND DID IT TAKE A LONG TIME? GYLLENHAAL: Can I say something real quick? It’s funny that people are saying that this is a war movie and I’ve been involved in a movie where people have said that to me in press conferences over and over again. I think as a result of obviously trying to sell the movie there’s an inclination – to just talk about your question – to not talk about that. I think you’re going to back into a corner but I don’t think that anyone is trying to pretend that we’re in some corner. We’re not in a corner. I think the movie is a journey and how they’re selling the movie is fascinating because the most extraordinary part of the movie is not given away at all in any of these ads or how they’re selling it. It’s the journey that Tobey’s character makes to get back home. I think that is kind of being…personally, that’s your job to say that that’s what the movie is about because that’s what it’s about. It is intertwined with a lot of other complications but mostly it’s about what this man does to get back to the people that he loves and to his life.'

'QUESTION: DID THE WAY THAT YOU THOUGHT ABOUT WAR CHANGE, FOR THE ACTORS, WHILE TALKING TO SOLDIERS AND DOING THE RESEARCH FOR THIS FILM? GYLLENHAAL: I can say that in researching the character that I played Jim and I went to a lot of different jails all over L.A. County and to juvenile halls and what happened totally, separately from the movie, I met these kids in this writing program at this juvenile hall and they were extraordinary kids. I mean if you want to get into politics we can talk about the kids that I met in this juvi. One of them that we met was this incredible storyteller that Jim ended up putting in the movie as one of the guys in the helicopter with Tobey. I have never been to the prison system, particularly in California or any place really, to see young men. This is a whole other type of young men being put in jail and to see how extraordinary many of them were and how many of them would never get out, that was an amazing thing. It was terrifying. Fourteen year olds to 18 year olds. I still go back to visit them. I still go back to that writing program because they’re pretty extraordinary kids and many of them have moved on, but they’re still coming in. We should think about that, too.'

QUESTION: THE ROLES AND CHARACTERS YOU PLAY IN THIS MOVIE ARE VERY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT YOU’VE DONE BEFORE. WHAT KIND OF THINGS DID YOU LEARN ABOUT YOURSELF IN DOING THIS PROJECT, AS AN ACTOR AND AS A PERSON? GYLLENHAAL: I’m going to talk about Tobey. Can I talk about Tobey? [laughs] SHERIDAN: Where I come from and you’re working with actors you’re all the time trying to stop them performing. These guys were so still I was like, ‘Oh my God, I don’t have any work to do.’ American actors are so used to the medium of film. GYLLENHAAL: Did you say ‘stale’?'

'SHERIDAN: I didn’t say ‘stale.’ I wouldn’t say stale. The difficulty with Jake is he’s kind of like, you know the way that other actors are really intense and they come on and you’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ Jake is kind of like that but he’s got a 360 degree intensity. You never know where he’s looking. He’s kind of in the scene but he’s kind of looking around himself. It takes a bit of getting used to and it took me a few weeks to get used to Jake’s approach which is very unique in my experience. He just thinks he’s in real life — and he’s up on the screen. Jake is just the same now as on the thing, up with the kid, up with his sister’s kid. He keeps joking even when I get serious and all, don’t you?'

'GYLLENHAAL: I think you just described me as a crazy person. ‘Jake has no idea of reality’. QUESTION: IS THAT A TRUTH ABOUT YOU, JAKE? GYLLENHAAL: Well, I can say that I think watching Tobey in the movie, that’s sort of the most extraordinary truth of it, watching somebody do something like that. I can only speak from personal experience but I have been blessed to watch actors who people didn’t feel were a certain way or could perform a certain thing do that. I’ve been honored to watch that. It’s always nice to see when people, journalists and people who never thought of someone one way, and then seeing them that way. I watched him go from the first part of the movie [BEFORE MAGUIRE’S CHARACTER GOES OVERSEAS] and then we had a Christmas break inbetween and then he had another week and when he came back he was another person and he was another person than what he was in the first couple of weeks that we started shooting. That was an extraordinary transformation, not only to watch as an actor but as a person and as an audience member. And now watching the movie I feel that way, too. I think that’s what we could talk about. I mean, I could talk about Natalie, too, but then I think she would probably freak out. I’ll stick with Tobey.'

Aside from the humour and Jake's easy manner of sparking off those around him - and how good it is to hear from Jake again - it's interesting to hear Jim describe Jake's acting style, with its 360 degree intensity, and also to learn about Jake's research for this role with young juveniles. Read the full extract here and you can also learn more about how Jim's vision for Brothers differs from that of the original movie.

I love how Jake talks about Tobey and what he did with the role.
Sometimes you find some actors don't say more than basic stuff about their co-stars and don't go into any detail about what they did with their performance.
As has been said about Jake - he's in it for the right reasons.

Hi Anon :) Jake is always generous at these events, in more ways than one. I've missed hearing him speak about films and roles.

What a great interview! This is the Jake that I first fell in love with. So witty, charming, thoughtful and generous to his co-stars and director. It feels like old times.

Yesterday, I had the unexpected pleasure of seeing the Brothers trailer on the big screen. I hadn't been to a movie in awhile so I wasn't really thinking about seeing any particular preview. Then there Jake was bigger than life. God, it's so fantastic to see him again.

As powerful as the videos have been, seeing the movie the way we will in a couple of weeks made me breathless with anticipation. Thanks, WDW, for a wonderful treat with my Sunday morning coffee.

This was so great - I loved hearing about his research and meeting the juvi kids in the writing program. :)

Also, I think Natalie looks beautiful at the press conference - I read a review or something where someone felt she was too gorgeous for the role? I think she's very believable as Grace - that's the thing about gorgeous, it can crop up just about anywhere - it knows no circumstance. I think everyone in Brothers is outstanding, and I want to read more about Jim Sheridan's vision for it too.

Can't wait for Brothers, and all the info/interviews. Thanks, WDW!

Dani *) This very definitely reminds me of old times - he's funny, geeky, generous and so much fun and intense at the same time. How wonderful to see the trailer in the cinema! I keep going, hoping I'll see something. I doubted the way that Lionsgate was promoting this film, but maybe they've done a good job after all, because I cannot wait. So good to see you!

Hey Bertie! Isn't it great to hear about this research?! I love to hear of Jake's involvement with these things and to learn that he's so open to these things while researching.

I LOVE how you describe Natalie and how beauty pops up - Natalie looks so beautiful in Brothers. She is one of those beautiful people, like Jake. Thanks Bertie - what a great comment *)

In the original "Brothers" Connie Nielsen was the wife & I'd say she was beautiful.
I've heard too young to play the role, but she could of married when she was 18 or 19 and had children that age.
It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the characters in the movie to be in their mid to late 20's.

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Absolutely, Anon - I do agree. This a young family, not ready for what's thrown at it.

I agree with you also - Natalie is definitely one of those gorgeous people, and so it Jake. Her character could have married young, I also agree, it would not be unheard of.

I forgot to mention that Bravo had Brokeback Mountain on again last night, and true to their word, they restored SNIT to all of it's beauty - left it intact. I have seen BBM so many times, and I have three copies of the DVD - BluRay, the Collector's Edition and the original - but I still enjoyed watching it on television, and I love how they dubbed the swearing, very cute. :)

Will I get another copy if a deleted scenes and anniversary edition ever comes out? You Bet. ;)

I agree with WDW, old time is back.

I love his humour, the way he express his thoughts and his kindness for his co-star. How I would like to have a long long conversation with him. lol

I am a bit sad for nat because of some critics about her age and look for the role. It's good for her to explore such character far from the usual image people have of her. She has talent and intelligence to deliver a great performance and yes she is a natural beauty, not artificial one. Her delicate features convey a lot of emotions. She and Jake have this gift.

Oh I also forgot! I saw the Brothers trailer during BBM last night. It's on Bravo again tonight at 11 pm EST if anyone is interested. :)

Hi, thank you so much for all the wonderful updates this week!

What a pity the little video of the press conference had only Toby talking... I hope there will be more video where we also see Jake speaking. I think it would help me with understanding him better. I realize I have sometimes problems following Jake's thoughts... :D :D :D And I would love to see more of him in action!
And what was up with that waterbottle? He first wanted to pour the water into his glass and then decided to just drink from the bottle? Hm...

Those new pictures of Jake from PoP and People and the one with the glasses... Just wonderful! Especially the PoP pic leaves me breathless... What a wonderful background for my computer at work that would make... Unfortunately not subtle enough... :D :D

Looking forward to more exciting Jake news this week. I wonder if he will really host SNL again??? And if there will be more talkshows for him than just this Kimmel show?
Like BBMIswear said the other day - it's almost too much to handle at the moment. And I can't believe that it might continue to be like that during the next months/ the next year... Just imagine if LAOD would really be released already next year! And maybe Nailed, too? And PoP of course... Jake overload!!! Yay!!

Hope you all have a good week!!!

After reading Jake's comments in the Boston Globe, if I ever meet him, I would like to ask him:"Do you do that on purpose? " LOL!
I love him!

Only a quick stop by as we are still dealing with the after effects of the storms and flooding here:(

It's so great to read the interview with Jake and Jim. This interview reminds me of all the reasons I love Jake. He is so generous in talking about his costars. A lot of stars lkr to keep the focus firmly on themselves. I was very interested in hearing him talk about the young offenders he met while researching the role and that he still goes back to see them.

When I first heard about the movie I thought Natalie might
be too young to play the role of a mother of two but since
I've seen clips of her I take back all my initial reservations.

Fingers crossed we will have a whole lot more pics from tinighs premiere tomorrow.

Hope everyone has a good evening:)

Hi Bertie! Dubbed BBM - that sounds interesting :D I'm glad to hear they restored SNIT. I have three DVDs and I most definitely would get another - just give me some extras! How great that you saw a Brothers trailer!

Hey Samothrace - I agree :) Natalie is such a natural beauty. And she interests me too. This role will interest a lot of people - and maybe earn a nomination or two.

Uli! Hello! The water bottle bit made me chuckle too - Jake didn't like that glass. Icould look at him for hours. It's great to read what he said but I'd love to see it.

It doesn't look like Jake will do SNL after all - the show has annnounced someone else for that night. But I do think Jake will do more shows than Jimmy Kimmel - it's just a nuisance that they announce them at the last minute.

2010 will be amazing :)

Me too, 21:36 :D

Hi Carol - posting at the same time :) I am so sorry to hear that you're going through a hard time with this weather and flooding. It's just awful. I feel for you - good luck x

It really is good to hear about Jake and his involvement with another good cause. I thought that about Natalie too, that she was too young, but my mind has definitely been changed.

Let's hope we get lots of lovely pictures. Thinking of you, Carol *)

Ahh, I love Jake and his commentary! He is not only charming, thoughtful and cares for others, his humor is in full force. Gah, we need video of this!! :D

We really do, Get Real - it's so long since we've heard Jake speak like this and its mesmerising.

I love this interview. I've missed interviews like this. I am in my glory when I get to read, listen, watch interviews like this. (So now we got to read, bring on the listen and watch)!!

Uli says it all with this: "Jake overload!!! Yay!!" I really do believe the end of 2009 and throughout 2010 we are all going to find ourselves smack in the middle of 'Jake Overload' and what fun it will be!! And Get Real is right...we need video of this!!

Special thanks to you, WDW, for keeping up with the amazing amount of Jake stuff coming our way just about every hour on the hour lately! It is obvious how much work you put into this blog and we appreciate it so, so much!!

I have now seen the Brothers commercial on TV a few times and each and every time I gasp, look up, and stare (as if I've never seen it before - LOL)! There's something about it popping up when you least expect it (like when a bunch of guys are watching the New England Patriot's battle the New York Jets and suddenly Jake is on my television screen)!! Hey...the New York Jets...Jake...Joe Namath. Just sayin' (hee hee)!

Well I think I need to go back and read this article again...he said so much...a lot to digest. Will we be so lucky tomorrow to get some video footage from the press conference Saturday and maybe the premiere going on right now?! I hope so! And then in a week the moviefone interview.

Whooowhee...it's all happening!!

P.S. I think I just did an 'Olympia post' :-)

Ooh great comment BBMISwear! To see ads for Brothers pop up on the TV - how wonderful. The premiere is happening right now - I can't wait to hear more and to see some film. These are good days and I'm smiling :D

Wow... haven't we been looking forward to these "there's so much news about Jake I have to take a day-off to read" days?

I can feel Jake's enthusiasm and energy even from reading the transcript of the press conference. Heehee... must be fun to have him on set :)

any pics from the NYC premiere yet?

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Morning Winterbird! I now, we need some serious time off work to keep up!

Jake didn't do the red carpet last night and he seems to have been in two places at the same time - seen on set in Pittsburgh and also in the NYC theatre and at the afterparty. I suppose it's possible he got back to NYC too late for the red carpet but made the party afterwards. Maybe some pics will turn up from the bash.

I bet Jake is great fun on set!

I'm still wet and very cold :(
