Time to Get Serious - Brothers gongs and PoP billions

Lionsgate is waking up, realising that Brothers reaches American theatres in a mere three weeks. Last week's screening at the DGA, which resulted in a standing ovation, may have given the movie camp a much needed boot up the bum. The Oscar buzz is also snowballing (can a buzz snowball?). According to Steve Pond, 'A full slate of screenings begins next week, with Academy-geared television spots to follow.'

The Wrap continues: '...the DGA screening has apparently set in motion a string of events that will culminate in next week’s launch of a full-fledged best-picture campaign for the film, and a best-actor push for star Tobey Maguire, who plays a soldier presumed missing in Afghanistan until he returns home to his wife (Natalie Portman) and younger brother (Jake Gyllenhaal).'

'To hear producer Ryan Kavanaugh tell it, the filmmakers proceeded cautiously because of uncertainty about the new landscape for Oscar campaigning. “With the change in Academy policy, we really wanted to let the film speak for itself before we made the decision whether or not to campaign,” he says. “If it got the momentum it needed once we showed it, we would do everything we could to support it as much as we can. And it certainly seemed to get that momentum.”'

'Others at the Sunday screening say that the film was followed by a standing ovation, a rarity for the DGA, and an enthusiastically-received 45-minute Q&A session in which a common theme was questioners wondering why the film didn’t have a higher profile in the awards race. Between the raves from the DGA (as a group, a fairly accurate Oscar precursor) and positive comments from a few critics who’d seen the film, Sheridan’s camp reportedly decided a full campaign was in order. Lionsgate was in the thick of its campaign for Oscar frontrunner “Precious,” and was said to be surprised that the “Brothers” filmmakers suddenly wanted to shift into Oscar mode as well – but the company quickly agreed to do so.'

'A full slate of screenings begins next week, with Academy-geared television spots to follow. Lionsgate’s awards website now promotes the film in a wide range of categories including best picture, best director, best actor, supporting actor and actress, screenplay, and song for U2’s “Winter.” The song certainly sounds apt (“The broken and the bruised/The young and the used/The sure and confused/All here”) -- and while Kris Tapley speculates that the track may run afoul of the music branch’s strict rules because it was recorded during the band's "No Line on the Horizon" sessions, Kavanaugh says that it was "without question" written specifically for the film.'

Meanwhile, Disney and Ubisoft aren't counting the gongs for Prince of Persia, they're counting the billions. Ubisoft's CEO, Yves Guillemot said yesterday that 'the Jake Gyllenhaal-led action film franchise could be more lucrative than Disney's Pirates trilogy. "What we hear is that it could be maybe stronger than Pirates, which did $2.7 billion dollars," Guillemot said as part of his presentation to analysts and investors. "I think this will really help our brand to become a major brand in this industry."' So, no pressure then...

Clearly, one summer blockbuster cannot equal or outdo three summer blockbusters. Jake may get a second, third, chance to dive into a cage of ostriches after all.

Of course, today is 2012 day and that can mean only one thing - not the end of the world, but Jake Gyllenhaal's arrival on the big screen as Dastan! If you see the trailer today do let us know.

Morning everyone! Great to see the excitement for Brothers building at long last.

And today is 2012 day (and Friday 13th - gulp) - Jake Gyllenhaal back on the big screen if only for a couple of minuts! If you see the trailer today do let me know.

Wow...busy times! Brothers, PoP, even Doug Liman auction news from yesterday...and it keeps rolling in!

Finally Lionsgate is getting behind Brothers...but now I want to know when and where these screenings are and how can we get ourselves an invitation?! I know, I know, it's all who you know.

I can't get to 2012 today to see our Prince on the big screen...but will try to soon. Will you be doing this WDW? Will you survive to write about it? Should I send smelling salts your way?!?! Once the trailer makes it to the theaters it won't be long before it makes it to our cable company where I can at least watch it on the big screen HD TV (over and over and over again). The family will probably kick me out of the house by May...ha ha!

Happy Friday. I'll report in from Sesame Street Central later...though I'm not too hopeful.

:-)

Morning BBMISwear :-) I know, I want to know too :D And what are these television spots they're talking about? And will it all be focused on Tobey? So many questions...

Oh yes, I'm getting ready for some world annihilation later today! And if the PoP trailer doesn't show, I'm going to have words for Roland and Jerry! I'll try not to faint... It'll be practice for May, which might not be pretty! I'm gonna need smelling slats and a drip and an oxygen tent and chocolate at least. My family have been told I'm out for June, possibly back in July intermittently :D

Looking forward to the report from Sesame Street Central!!

I was planning to see 2012 today. In fact i have been planning to see it since i saw the first trailer..i enjoy apocolyptic popcorn movies :D but im not very well :( so will have to wait! Im just hoping they will show POP trailer at every showing..what do you think?

BBMISwear said...

Well I'll hold on to my package of smelling salts until May then...maybe an adult beverage before the movie tonight will take care of things for the 2 minute 30 second trailer!!

I think the TV spots (commercials) will be the typical ones you see close to Oscar time that is the basic trailer (the 1 minute version of course) with the various quotes from film critics "remarkable" says such and such source, "one of the best movies of 2009" says such and such source, "tobey maguire in his best performance to date" says such and such source. Blah blah blah. Just give me Jake Gyllenhall on my TV screen and I'll be happy!! (And a special Brothers screening in Boston between now and December 4th and I'll be even happier)!!

RE: The trailer at all movie showings I'm not sure how that's going to work. My brains a little fuzzy this morning...wasn't it over the summer that the Brothers trailer first surfaced and some people saw it before a specific movie and others did not? Or am I mixing this up with something else? I think PoP will be considerably more wide spread than a typical movie (it's Disney after all!) but no guarantees from theater to theater. I want to buy an all day pass at our local 13 screen theater (you know the one WDW!!) and just go from screen to screen to screen all day and night searching for the PoP and Brothers trailers. Do you think they'll let me? I'll buy lots of popcorn and candy!

Back later with a (probably nothing much to say) Sesame Street report!

:-)

Hi there Anon :) I'm very sorry to hrear you're unwell - fortunately, this film should be around quite a while and, hopefully, the trailer will show each time. I'd be surprised if it doesn't. I like big popcorn movies too :D

Hey BBMISwear - posting at the same time :-) I have an hour in the pub first to prepare myself :D

Ahh! Thanks for explaining the tv spot things - we don't get those here so I was wondering what they meant. So no screening in Oxford then... I think that might be valuable for the Academy.

I think the trailer will show each time before 2012 - it's on such a different scale to Brothers. I know how disappointed I'll be if it's not shown today in my theatre! But I'll just keep trying... I wonder if I'll ever see the Brothers trailer here in the cinemas. I think so far in all these years I've seen one Zodiac trailer and that's it. I want that surprise of having Jake pop up unexpectedly - or expectedly as today - pleeeeeese!

Good luck down there at Sesame Street Central! Wonder what you'll learn about today!

There will be a screening of Brothers in London on December 13, but don't know if it will be only for the press.
Local: Soho Hotel-Theater 1

Lionsgate think "Precious" is the Oscar frontrunner? That film with Mariah Carey? well, who knows? maybe because it's one of those "based on true story" thing that they think is Oscar favoured.

Love that Brothers is getting good response. It's still a bit early to see who and what will get nominated. But now with the Oscar having 10 Best Film nominations, there is a good chance, indeed.

oh... the pressure on PoP... I don't know, such genre's target audience is so fickle, who knows what would happen. I've always thought that Pirates was a bit of a fluke, to be honest.

winterbird said...

I think Soho Hotel's screening room is private hire, so it could be the UK distributors doing a screening for the press. It also has a film club where the public can go watch a film there on Sundays, but Brothers is not on the list.

Need to watch out for secret screenings! I wish they would do a public Q&A one like Dr Panarsuss!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

hi Monica! That's very interesting! That must be a press screening - but maybe there'll be something else to watch out for :D

Hey Winterbird! I must say that Precious does not sound at all like the kind of film I'd like to see but it is getting lot of attention stateside so it's good to see brothers hitched on.

Maybe PoP will appeal to the same people as Pirates, although I obviously hope it's much better! I have confidence because of Jordan Mechner being on board. And obviously a certain actor in the title role!

There could well be Q&A screenings, as with Benjamin Button and Dr P. We have to keep our ears open!

Not long now to the end of the world....

I am getting so excited about all this! I see Brother's posters, commercials, etc. all over now. I am so thrilled it is getting such great buzz. I do think they are promoting it well now because I can't walk a block without seeing the poster. :) I really want to see a special screening but have no idea when or where they might be.

Winterbird, Precious is an incredible movie and it will definitely have some Oscar nods. The actress who plays the girl and the actress who plays the mother are excellent. Mariah believe or not was, gulp, pretty good. When I saw it the theatre was packed, it broke box office records, and the great thing is that they are showing the Brothers trailer with it. Lionsgate is doing the right thing imo.

As for PoP wow, it really could be huge! :)

Have a good Friday everyone...even though it is the 13th *ducks*

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Hi Get Real! That's so great you see the poster everywhere! I wish we had that kind of thing here. Precious sounds poretty mega - I was a bit put off when I saw Mariah was in it I must say! But not out here yet for a while. Yeh, PoP! MASSIVE!!!

Gotta run for a date with the end of the world and A Trailer!

How exciting WDW...you may be seeing Dastan on the HUGE screen right now! (or soon)! Keep us posted!

Well no good news from Sesame Street Central...no birthday special...no Jake. I got a strong feeling (based on a news article) that Michelle Obama would be back on SS again this week and it was because of the birthday celebration. No birthday celebration so far. I learned a lot about Nature and Helping though.

All together now: "La La La La, La La La La, Elmo's World...."

:-)

Great to hear all the news that's happening.

Enjoy 2012 WDW and try to report back later..... If you can:) Unfortunately I have to wait til tomorrow to see it.

Even tho i haven't seen "Precious" i know it has been receiving good reviews for quite a while when it was shown at film festivals.
it's not a Carey movie - there has been a lot more press on the leading characters.
By all reports all have been praised.

winterbird said...

Should watch out for "Precious" then?

Thanks for all the info :) I guess I was a bit "errr" about it because when I first heard of it, I only heard that it is a "Oprah Winfrey produced" film and Mariah Carey is in it - both not really my cup of tea... :P

If Brothers does well too, then Lionsgate have two strong contenders in their hands.

I need Jake to be there to make me want to watch those award things!

And I need a report of the PoP trailer on big screen, WDW!

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Well, what can I say? Maybe a trailer for the USA but not for Oxford! Not only that but the best thing about 2012 is the seats (very comfy) and the contraband G&T. Amanda, next time, don't listen to Jake! At least the dog was ok - admittedly the giraffe laughed while the owner drowned.

Roland, I'm coming for you!

LOL! So I guess you didn't like 2012 then? Was it so bad? Sorry it didn't have the POP trailer. I was considering going to see it but if you, who normally like this kind of movie, didn't enjoy it, the chances I will are pretty slim since I usually don't watch this type of flic.

Sounds like you had a disappointing evening WDW. No trailer:( If you had no trailer it's unlikely we will have it either.

I'm with Olympia on this one. If you didn't enjoy it WDW I'm not sure if I will either. My friend is going tomorrow so I might wait to hear his verdict before I go myself.

The waiting game continues.....we are certainly a patient lot:(

Wet Dark and Wild said...

We do have to be patient, Carol! It's so frustrating. But I had some good company tonight thanks to Mr & Mrs Ruby so it was well worth a night out :) But I am disappointed that there was no trailer - did others get one?

Day After Tomorrow was a much better film :)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Waves to Olympia! I codn't see your comment beforr as travelling. Maybe the trailer"s showing outside the UK?

Sorry about 2012, WDW. Doesn't look like anything I would want to see.

I also meant to comment a while ago that I really liked the new Jake interview. And how adorable is he talking about working with the ostriches!

In more exciting news...Jake is in the December issue of In Style Magazine!! He has an adorable and sexy new pic and is talking about needing to wear glasses. It is a section about actors and their charities. He has a pair of glasses on lifted up on his forehead, not actually wearing them though. I can scan it Monday unless one of you lovely folks can get to a scanner this weekend. :)

Morning Get Real! OMG that's great news! as someone who accidentally hailed an ambulance once thinking it was a bus I love to hear Jake talk about what it's like to not be able to see well. Thanks very much for the lovely offer - I know how we'd all love to see it over here, so yes please! *)

I hope everyone has a good Saturday - stormy here. Do they do Sesame Street at the weekends...?

"... as someone who accidentally hailed an ambulance once thinking it was a bus..." Thanks for my first laugh of the day, WDW! :DDD

Oh! Jake talking about wearing glasses? With an adorable and sexy pick? Yes please! Can't wait to see that!

Sure, will do on Monday, WDW! Btw, I just read the little caption on the picture and it says the glasses are Jakes own. :)

That's too bad about no PoP trailer before 2012 where you were WDW. :-( Has anyone heard from anyone that saw 2010 in the states and got to see the PoP trailer first? I could not go myself...not sure when I'm going to get to...and am not curious if it's even worth it. I have absolutely NO interest in 2012...I didn't before WDW's report and do not now...LOL! I would consider, however, paying the money to go in, watch the trailer and then leave. Hmmmmm.

Oh the InStyle Magazine piece sounds great! I don't believe it is on news stands until 11/20 so big thanks to Get Real for scanning it for us on Monday!!

No Sesame Street on weekends (unless maybe some random reruns). We'll see what next week brings on the Sesame Street front!

:-)

Wet Dark and Wild said...

Ahhh Kintr McGillicuddy! Thank you!!

Good to make you laugh, Olympia! I'm always getting into mixups like that :D Oh, you and me both! I can't wait to see :D

Gulp! Get Real! Thank you - and I can't wait to see this - I love to think that Jake can nestle down in an evening with a book and glasses, just like me and lots of the rest of us :D Roll on Monday (and I don't often say that...)

Hi there BBMISwear :-) I'd love to hear if anyone got to see the trailer with 2012, especially in the UK. At least we alreaady have it on the net, otherwise I'd be very disappointed indeed. I have been watching TDAT on TV this evening and it shows what a good film that is.

I'm glad to hear you'll be resuming your Sesame Street Central duties!

New post :)
